Work Text:

As he trudged up the stairs to their flat, Mathias felt the tightness in his chest ease, even with the shivers he was fighting from walking home through the snow falling over Stormwind. He dug the key out of his pocket and placed it in the lock just as the bell of the Cathedral began to chime the midnight hour. He pressed his head against the wood of the door with a sigh, then pushed it open. The fire in the hearth was burning low as Mathias walked across the room. He dropped his pack, then shed his pauldrons and gloves, laying them on the sofa where he sat to kick off his boots. He stared at the fire for a few moments before moving to crouch before it and toss a few more logs on to keep it going for the rest of the night.

Groaning as he rose, he noticed something new in the corner of the flat that brought a smile to his face. In the corner near their bedroom door stood a scraggly looking tree decorated with a few baubles and a shiny star on top. He approached it slowly, reaching out to gently cradle one of the ornaments. As he turned it in his hand his eyes caught on something painted on the surface. Carefully, he plucked it from its branch to bring it closer to the light of the fire. Painted in his partner's scratchy script, it read “Mathias and Flynn - 10 Years of Love - Year 637”. Mathias felt an overwhelming fondness as he smiled down at the ornament before taking it back to the tree to hang where it belonged. He gave it one last look, then turned to their bedroom door.

He entered their room and closed the door softly behind him, then looked over to where Flynn lay sleeping on his back with one arm over his head, the other thrown out to the side and just enough sheet to cover his dignity. He felt that warmth brighten in his chest as he shed the rest of his armor to the floor to worry about tomorrow, then crawled under the sheet to wrap his arms around Flynn. His love startled briefly, then wrapped him in his arms.

“M’thias, you’re home.” he said, voice scratchy with sleep.

“I am.” Mathias replied, nuzzling his face into the warmth of Flynn’s chest, “Happy Winter Veil.”

He felt a hand come up to his chin, and Flynn pulled his face up into a soft kiss.

“Happy Winter Veil, love.”
