Chapter Text

Dionysus wasn’t one for LA. It was more Hades’s domain. But perhaps that was why Lucifer Morningstar chose to make it his home.

He stepped out of the elevator and into the penthouse. While he could have teleported in it wouldn’t have been… the most polite of entrances. Plus it probably woken up the satyr that was curled up in his arms.

Grover was the runt of the herd. He was so small and Dionysus couldn’t help but take a liking to him even before his quest. He sighed. Maybe this was his true punishment.  Cursed to get attached to kids who are  doomed from the start.

“Booze cruise!” Lucifer’s voice interrupted his thoughts.

“And hello to you too, Luci,”

“To what do I owe the pleasure? Need to get away from the urchin—“ he paused when he noticed the child in Dionysus’s arms.

“I need a favor,” he said, gently laying Grover down on the couch.

“Wonderful, I’ll get us drinks,”

Dionysus put his hand up. “I’m sober at the moment. Part of the… camp contract,”

Lucifer looked he wanted to say something but didn’t.

“So, what’s it you need?” He asked sitting in the bar stool next to him.

“I need you to watch him,”

“Babysitting? Isn’t that your—“

“Please just let me explain.” Dionysus took a sip of his Diet Coke.

“He’s been through a lot. No living relatives. He went on his first mission and…gods he wasn’t even supposed to be there,”

Well that peaked Lucifer’s interest.

“Hermes was supposed to send someone else to get the high power demigods back to camp. But that satyr died and my brother had the grand idea to just send the closest satyr in the area.”

“And I suppose the his new recruit was the goat spawn on my sofa?”

“I’m getting to that. He— he tried his best but not all of the demigods made it and well… you know how the divine feel about blame.”

Lucifer looked appalled but not surprised. How dare they blame their own poor planning on a child.

“I need you to watch him. Just for a month while I sort things out up there and—“

“You have a deal.”

What Dionysus was doing for this kid was more than anyone had ever done for him(which was a low bar in itself but that didn’t matter at the moment.) For that no favor was needed in return.

“Wow, I— I honestly thought that would take more convincing,”

“No, no. Not for this.”

The sleeping bundle on the couch began to stir. Dionysus walked over to him and gestured for Lucifer to follow.

“Hey kiddo. You uh— remember what we talked about earlier.”

The kid nodded.

“Well, Grover this is your Uncle Lucifer.” His voice was on the verge of breaking.

“He— he’s going to watch over you for a little while, okay?”

The satyr reached out for his dad, fighting back tears. Dionysus took this as an opportunity to drape an old Hawaiian shirt over his shoulders.

"Even when I'm not here, it'll still smell like me okay?"

Lucifer took a breath. He hadn't communicated with any of his own kids in a millennia. But how different could children be from stars.

"I swear to you that your dad will return. For now, you will have myself and Mazikeen to protect you. I give you my word." He was working in the only language he knew: deals.

Grover stared at him. Their eyes were still misty but they weren't crying crying so that was a good sign.

"Come now doe, you satyrs enjoy plants, yes?" Lucifer said, putting on a nature documentary on the TV. The kid stayed quiet but looked more relaxed.

Problem sufficiently solved, Lucifer turned the corner to call Maze about they're new room mate. He was in for some pretty good luck considering it only took five rings for her to pick up.

"What do you want Feathers?" Oof that nickname was reserved for when hellfires could match her irritation.

"Don't get your panties in a twist, just wanted to let you know about a guest we'll be having in the pent house for a bit."

"What, someone leave a crocodile in your bath again?"

"Technically that was an alligator but no. You remember that Hellenic wine god right?"

"Yeah, I've seen him around, why?"

"He's dropped off one of his spawns… or well spawn-adjacent."

"A kid?!"

"Close. A satyr to be exact. Quite small."

Maze groaned audibly over the phone. If the thing was already in the apartment, she knew Lucifer's flock instincts would be through the roof.

"Isn't it great? I was thinking we could take him to the observatory."

"Yeah… you have fun with that," She deadpanned. "Just make sure he's nowhere near my stuff."

"You have yourself a deal."

***
When Maze got in around 2 am, Grover was fast asleep on a blanket that probably cost more then a persons mortgage. She side eyed Lucifer at the piano.

"What's his deal?" she asked. Lucifer did deals but they'd never done anything to this caliber before. There had to be something in it for him.

"You know how it is, Zip Zap can't keep it in his pants. He tried protecting them and was rewarded with blame."

Maze's earlier assumption was quickly proven right. If there was anything she knew about her boss it would be his ability to project. Of course he took this kid in.

She fidgeted with her signature blades. Violence was a language she was fluent in and even though it was few and far between there had been times where she couldn't protect her king. Demons couldn't feel guilt but the seething hot rage made it easier to prevent from happening again.

"I could teach him," She said, noting a resemblance to when Lucifer first ended up in hell, scrawny with a mess of curls. "That kid's gonna be able to fight like hellfire by the time he gets out of here."

Notes:

I've been thinking about writing this forever and the second season of percy jackson coming out definitely fed the plot bunnies lol. Comments, kudos and reactions appreciated

Discussion Questions/Comment Openers:

1. Why do you think Lucifer felt the way he did about Grover and how is it influenced by his own upbringing

2. What "family activities" do you think Lucifer would be taking Grover to?
