the fear of being hunted

Summary:

Squiddo hunts Greg.jar and gets hunted back a little, but hey, that's just part of the chase.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

Barely a month since you first marked Greg.jar as your prey, and the hunter has already become the hunted. Typical. After all, if prey wants to survive, it obviously seeks to eliminate any threats to its survival.

Just the two of you now (as much as it can be said that there's only one of you and one of it), chasing each other 'round and 'round. You wake up, you die, you repeat. It screams, it dies, it makes more of itself. Snake eating its own tail in the glory of the chase.

At some point the hunted has to become the hunter again, right? It's just a cycle after all. All you have to do is progress, inch by agonizing inch, worlds burning in your wake as you fail again and again but you're so close. Just a little more. Red on your shirt, yours and the creatures' blood mixing, and every time you hit respawn your mind becomes even clearer, honing down onto exactly what you need to do to win.

Then—

The sweet-sour taste of almost-victory in your fingers scrabbling at the edge of the platform slamming the totem down, then the crash of lightning and the dying screams of every single nightmare creature around you coming together in one glorious symphony—

You won.

You won!

You stand in a devastated landscape, still covered in the dead bodies of your prey, and for a few moments everything is at peace (aside from how your entire body is aching from constant death-respawn-death).

For a few months, you're fine.

... then you get word that there's a new version out already. And then there's that itch again. Mind already racing, seeking out information about this new prey and formulating plans to defeat it.

You sigh and get to work.

Notes:

squiddo is definitely more of a spiral guy (and you could make arguments for desolation/slaughter especially in lifesteal) but ooghhh squiddo and greg.jar hunt...
