Work Text:

L Lawliet —

For New Year’s, L and Watari spend the evening restaurant hopping together. Rather than staying in or ordering the same familiar sweets, L makes a conscious decision to treat the night as an experiment. He wants to try foods that aren’t sweet or sugary—something completely outside of his usual preferences aka his comfort zone. Watari supported this immediately, carefully planning out a route of different places they can visit throughout the night.

At each restaurant, L approaches the experience with an open mind, as if it were a quest to expand his taste buds. He observes the presentation, the texture, and the flavor of every dish, mentally ranking them and forming detailed opinions. He even entertains himself by acting like a food critic, offering blunt, analytical “reviews” to Watari after each meal. Some dishes are dismissed quickly, others earn brief approval, but L remains surprisingly engaged the entire time.

One of the highlights of the night ends up being a small barbecue food truck Watari brings him to. There, L tries brisket for the first time. He finds the flavor rich and tolerable—better than he expected and admits that he actually likes it. Still, he makes it very clear to Watari that this is a one-time exception. While L isn’t strictly vegetarian, he’s never enjoyed meat much and has little interest in making it a regular part of his diet.

By the end of the night, the experience feels meaningful and his topped rank dish was the brisket. For L, New Year’s isn’t about celebration in the traditional sense, for him, it was more about curiosity away from routine—and with Watari beside him, even something as simple as trying new food that weren't sweets or sugar becomes memorable.

Misa Amane —

For New Year’s, Misa usually spends the night out with her modeling friends; but instead of going to a loud party or club, they decide to do something more exciting. Together—they head to the nearest amusement park to ring in the New Year. Misa loves the idea immediately: it felt more exciting and memorable than standing around at a party, and it gives her a chance to genuinely have fun rather than just be sitting around feeling bored.

The group spends the night going on rides, playing games, and taking pictures together. Misa is especially energetic, laughing and screaming loudly on roller coasters and insisting on going on rides multiple times. She makes sure everyone gets matching souvenirs before the night is over, treating it like a special occasion worth remembering.

Light agrees to let Misa bring Sayu along under the condition that she stays with the group the entire time. Misa is thrilled by this and takes the responsibility seriously, making sure Sayu is safe and included in everything. Sayu has an amazing time, especially on the rides—and grew more attached to Misa, who treats her more like a little sister than just Light’s sibling.

Light Yagami —

For New Year’s, Light decides to spend the day with Yuri, a girl he’s been seeing casually. With a rare break from his usual busy schedule, he takes the opportunity to do something simple but meaningful with her. Rather than going somewhere extravagant, Light chooses to bring Yuri to his home to meet his parents, Soichiro and Sachiko. It’s a gesture that shows his trust and how comfortable he’s become around her; for the most part.

Sachiko, of course, is thrilled to meet her and immediately insists on setting out snacks and tea for everyone. They all sit together in the living room, sharing polite conversation while the television plays quiet New Year’s programs in the background. Soichiro is reserved but welcoming, subtly studying Yuri the way only a detective like himself could, while Light stays perfectly composed—charming, respectful, and attentive as always.

Mello —

For New Year’s, Mello stays in his room at Wammy’s House with Matt. Instead of going out or doing anything that could cause chaos to the other kids, the two of them spend the night indoors, avoiding the rest of the orphanage. Mello sitting at his desk, focused on writing, surrounded by scattered papers and half-finished notes, determined to get his thoughts down without interruption.

Matt keeps him company, sitting nearby and quietly existing in the same space, which Mello appreciates more than he’d ever admit out loud. Between writing sessions, Mello drinks hot chocolate straight from the mug, barely letting it cool before taking another sip. He snacks absentmindedly while he works, pacing occasionally when he gets frustrated, then returning to the desk with renewed focus.

Near —

For New Year’s, Near spends the time baking cookies with Halle, Gevanni, and Rester. Rather than celebrating alone, He wanted to spend this time with the group stays indoors, turning the kitchen into a calm, orderly space filled with the best smell you could smell—sugar and butter. Near is focused on the process of baking, carefully following the recipe closely while seated on a stool, quietly observing each step like a small experiment.

Every so often, Near’s curiosity gets the better of him, and he reaches a finger toward the cookie batter to taste it. Each time, Halle gently scolds him and reminds him about raw ingredients, and how he could possibly get salmonella; moving the bowl just out of his reach. Near doesn’t argue—he simply withdraws his hand, nods slightly, and resumes working as if nothing happened, though he clearly tries again later when he thinks no one is watching.

Gevanni and Rester handle most of the heavier work, rolling dough and setting trays into the oven, while Near arranges the cookies with carefully. The atmosphere is warm, and filled with soft conversation and the sound of the oven timer. When the cookies are finally finished, Near lines them up neatly before allowing himself one, deciding that waiting made them taste better.

Matt Jeevas —

After spending some time in Mello’s room at Wammy’s House, Matt decides to head out on his own for a bit. He grabs his coat and leaves quietly, knowing Mello will still be working when he gets back. Matt stops at Taco Bell. He orders two grilled cheese beef burritos and large Baja Blast for himself.

Before leaving, he also adds a pack of tacos to the order, knowing Mello will eat them without complaint once he’s pulled away from his writing. Matt doesn’t mention it as a favor; he simply considers it part of the routine. When he returns, he sets the food down between them without much comment. The tacos are shared casually, eaten between sentences and moments of quiet, chrunchy chewing.

Raye Penber —

There’s a New Year’s party held at the bureau headquarters, organized as a potluck so everyone can contribute something. Raye arrives carrying a large pot of homemade chili, along with a cooler filled with drinks for everyone to share.

Naomi joins him not long after he arrives, naturally settling in at his side. Rather than moving around the room or engaging in conversations with other FBI agents, the two of them spend most of the party sitting close together at one of the tables. They talk quietly, sharing observations about the room, the food, and the people they work with.

Raye keeps one arm resting near Naomi, occasionally leaning in as they speak, while Naomi listens attentively, relaxed and comfortable beside him. The party continues around them, full of noise and movement; but they remain mostly in their own space, enjoying the calm-ish atmosphere they get to be around together.

Naomi Misora —

Like Raye, Naomi also brings food to the potluck at bureau headquarters. She prepares a tray of small pastries filled with strawberry jam and brings along a box of strawberry mochi as well. The desserts stand out among the other dishes, both because of their neat presentation and how quickly they disappear once people start eating. Several of the female agents at the party compliment Naomi on her cooking, asking where she learned to bake and joking that she should bring desserts more often.

Naomi accepts the praise modestly, clearly pleased but not overly showy about it. She makes sure everyone who wants to try something gets a piece before setting the rest aside. Afterward, she returns to Raye’s side, and the two of them sit together while they eat. They share the food they brought, occasionally trading tastes, and continue their quiet conversation.

Watari —

Before heading out to go restaurant hopping with L, Watari takes a quiet moment to prepare himself. Fully aware of how demanding and particular L can be, he pours himself three glasses of champagne and follows them with two glasses of wine. It’s not indulgence so much as mental preparation, helping him steel his nerves for the long night ahead.

Once finished, Watari straightens himself; calmly gathers his things, and sets out as if nothing is out of the ordinary. By the time he joins L, he’s composed, attentive, and ready to accommodate every sudden change of plans, unusual request, and detailed opinion L is sure to have. For Watari, the New Year begins not with celebration, but with quiet patience and unwavering dedication he has to L.

Matsuda Touta —

Matsuda spends part of New Year’s Eve on a call with Aizawa, sulking a little as he talks about how disappointed he is that he didn’t manage to get a date by the end of the year. His tone is half-joking, half-genuine, and it’s clear he’s a little bummed—but he’s not miserable. Aizawa listens patiently, offering the occasional dry comment that only makes Matsuda groan in mock frustration.

Despite the minor disappointment, Matsuda is doing okay. He’s visiting his parents in the countryside, enjoying the slower pace of life and the chance to be around his own family. He even helps out with the farm chores, tending to the cows and pigs alongside his parents. By the end of the day, Matsuda is tired but content. He may not have had a romantic date to celebrate, but he’s surrounded by family, familiar work, and the calm of the countryside!

Teru Mikami —

For New Year’s, Teru Mikami feels hesitant about visiting his mother. Part of him worries about the encounter, but he also knows it’s something he needs to do; a sense of responsibility pulls him toward her. Determined to make the visit pleasant, he brings over a cake to share, carefully chosen to be something they can enjoy together.

When he arrives, he spends time talking with his mother, keeping the conversation composed and polite. He updates her on his life, emphasizing the good things: his health, his routines, and the ways he’s been managing himself. Teru wants her to feel reassured, to see that he is doing well and that she has nothing to worry about.

The visit is tame, and a bit boring—but it carries meaning for himself. For Teru, being there for his mother and sharing a cake and thoughtful conversation was an important way to honor both his responsibilities and their bond. By the time he leaves, there’s a calm sense of fulfillment: he’s done what he felt he should, and the evening ends on a quiet note.

Kiyomi Takada —

For New Year’s, Kiyomi Takada spends the evening attending a charity event, hosting a live episode while dressed elegantly in red. She looks poised and polished, radiating the kind of confidence that naturally draws attention. Beyond appearances, she’s deeply focused on making a difference.
During the event, she donates $100,000 to a children’s hospital, and she works to raise additional funds for an orphanage near her childhood home.

Her efforts are not just performative; she engages genuinely with the cause, speaking with attendees and supporters about the importance of helping children in need.

By the end of the night, it’s clear that Kiyomi has succeeded—not only in raising substantial funds, but in using her platform and influence to positively impact her community. For her, the evening is a meaningful way to celebrate the New Year: elegant, and with purposeful, Kiyomi felt deeply connected to the people and causes she cares about and it felt evident with the successful event.

Sayu Yagami —

For New Year’s, Sayu spends the day at the amusement park with Misa and Misa’s modeling friends. From the start, the group dotes on her, remarking on how cute she is and constantly showering her with sweet treats, small trinkets, and accessories they think would look adorable on her. Sayu is delighted by the attention, laughing and trying on every little gift while munching happily on candies, pastries, and other park snacks.

She has an absolutely amazing time, going on rides, playing games, and enjoying the lively atmosphere. Misa keeps a close eye on her, making sure she’s included in everything and having as much fun as possible. The only drawback comes later: Sayu ends up feeling a bit overwhelmed from eating too much at once, and eventually throws up from indulging in so many treats. Despite this, the experience is still overwhelmingly positive, and she remembers the day fondly.

Soichiro Yagami —

For New Year’s, Soichiro has the day off and spends it quietly at home with Sachiko. Together, they work in the kitchen, preparing simple meals and enjoying the familiar rhythms of cooking side by side. Afterward, they sit down to eat, sipping tea and watching TV, appreciating the calm, domestic moments that the holiday allows for them to enjoy.

Later in the day, Light brings Yuri over. Soichiro is pleasantly surprised by the visit. He observes her carefully but finds himself genuinely fond of her. Her demeanor, politeness, and ease around Light leave a good impression on him. By the end of the evening, Soichiro quietly approves of her, feeling reassured that Light has chosen someone trustworthy and kind to spend time with.

Stephen Gevanni —

After spending the day baking cookies with Halle, Near, and Rester, Stephen Gevanni decides to challenge himself with something bigger: a large chocolate cake. He carefully gathers the ingredients, measures everything precisely, and puts the cake in the oven, confident in his baking skills.

Unfortunately, his confidence gets the better of him. As he tries to take the cake out of the oven, he makes a sudden, exaggerated movement like something out of a cartoon—and the cake slips, flying into the air. It lands partly on the floor and partly on him, covering his arms and chest in hot, gooey chocolate. Stephen rushes to the nearest bathroom to wash off the mess, scrubbing frantically while muttering under his breath. The cake is ruined, but he can’t help but let out a small laugh at the absurdity of the situation.

Halle Lidner —

For New Year’s, Halle Lidner spends part of the day in the kitchen with Rester, baking cookies with Near and Gevanni. Once the cookies are out of the oven, she takes the next task upon herself: decorating the SPK headquarters for the holiday. She carefully arranges decorations, streamers, and small festive touches.

While waiting for the cookies to cool, Halle sits next to Near, who is quietly occupied with his robot toy. The two of them speak softly, sharing thoughts and enjoying each other’s company without distraction. Near tells her about his New Year’s wishes, and in turn, Halle shares her own hopes for the coming year.

Beyond Birthday —

For the past few days, Beyond Birthday hasn’t made much of an effort to celebrate Christmas or New Year’s in any grand way. Instead, he spends most of his time relaxing quietly at home, enjoying the solitude and the freedom to do exactly what he wants. Despite being alone, he occasionally buys a few festive items like; string lights, a small ornament, maybe a special dessert to give his space a touch of holiday cheer. The gestures are modest, but he was.. Alone, With no one to celebrate by his side. So why did it matter at all?

B found comfort in the little things. He prepares a large meal just for himself, savoring the indulgence of having an entire turkey to enjoy without sharing. He sets the table, pours a drink, and eats slowly, taking the time to appreciate each bite. To most people, celebrating alone might feel lonely, but for B, the quiet of his own environment is satisfying in it's own right.

The days pass peacefully, filled with small personal pleasures like: tasty food, soft music in the background on a small radio, and the quiet glow of holiday lights looming outside his windows. Basically—“He did a whole lot of nothing; but ate like a glutton. ”

The atmosphere is cozy and warm, with soft conversation, laughter, and gentle teasing between them. A makes sure his cats are comfortable, giving them attention and treats as part of the celebration.

By the end of the evening, everyone gathers with glasses of apple cider in hand. She’s protective and watchful, keeping a subtle eye on Sayu as well, making sure nothing goes wrong while Misa has fun. From the sidelines; Rem experiences a kind of quiet amusement herself, intrigued by the humans’ excitement and energy.
Even though she is a shinigami and not directly involved in the festivities, Rem’s presence added care and guardianship to the two girls and Misa's friends—making sure that Misa and Sayu can fully enjoy their day safely.

Ryuk —

For New Year’s, Ryuk keeps the door to Light’s room firmly locked and settles in for a quiet evening of playing video games by himself. With Light out on a date with Yuri, Ryuk has his room to himself and takes full advantage of the freedom.

Eventually, he decides to make a quick trip to the human store. He wanders the aisles, casually picking up a few apples before heading to a nearby park to enjoy them in peace. Sitting on a bench, Ryuk bites into the crisp fruit, savoring the taste and enjoying the fresh, cold air the human realm provided.

Unbeknownst to him, a passerby happens to snap a photo of the scene; and from the human’s perspective, it looks as if someone is eating an invisible apple. Ryuk doesn’t notice and continues enjoying his snack, unfazed by the strange effect.

Shuichi Aizawa —

For New Year’s, Shuichi Aizawa has the day off and decides to take his family on a short trip instead of staying in Japan. He, his wife, and their daughter traveled to Yosemite, enjoying the winter landscape and the opportunity to spend time together away from work.
