Work Text:
The crowd cheered after the final goal was shot. Japan wins the World Cup once again, two times in a row. This wasn't the U20 league, this was the real deal. This was Reo's dream, now achieved twice. He couldn't be happier, or so one would think, but he's filled with a tinge of sadness as well. For now, he'll push that aside to focus on the moment, and relish in the happiness he can feel right now. He'll bask in this feeling like he's the only one in the world with Nagi, like they're alone celebrating this victory.
"We did it Reo. That's twice now. Your dream, our dream."
"That's right Nagi," Reo chuckles. "We did it again. I'm so happy, Treasure."
Nagi looks at Reo who's staring off into the crowd of their teammates and staff who are all on the field celebrating. His gut instinct was telling him, that Reo was in fact, not entirely happy.
"Hey, Reo… I wan-," Nagi stops, interrupted.
"Nagi! Mikage! Please a few words. Nagi, Nagi please tell us how it feels scoring the first goal of the game! You've been getting recognition as being the striker who always shoots the first goal of the game this whole tournament. You've become one of the most valuable players on the national team, how does it feel having such a huge role!"
Reo smiles and backs away slowly from Nagi, he feels Nagi's hand grip his wrist, but the onslaught of press jostles Nagi and Reo enough for Nagi to lose his grip on Reo's wrist for a slight second, allowing for Reo to break free and distance himself from the mess.
Any other time, he would be there front and center praising Nagi and gloating about Nagi's stats and feats to the press. But right now, that's not what he feels like doing, he has no right to do that after his announcement that's to come.
Nagi looks around for Reo, trying to quickly answer and leave but he gets stuck there with a few other players for a group interview. Throughout the whole time he searches for the striking purple hair that never fails to catch his attention, but it's no where to be seen.
Reo…
Reo joins some of the other teammates in the locker room, he grabs his items to take a quick shower. Once he finishes he goes back to hanging out in the locker room, leisurely getting the rest of his belongings ready, taking his time in hopes that he can catch Nagi one more time before leaving. He hears talks about the team going out to celebrate after this, something about a bar and restaurant. While Reo usually attends the festivities, today he finds he just wants to go back to his hotel room and sleep away the anxiety.
"Reooo~ how could you leave me all alone over there? I thought we were partners, you know I hate doing interviews," Nagi makes a show of whining as he walks towards Reo.
Some of their teammates start laughing, they really wonder how Reo tolerates this man child sometimes. But they know they make eachother happy.
"Sorry Nagi, I really wanted to shower hah! Plus the press had no interest in me, I didn't wanna stick around just standing there!"
"That's not true, they were asking where you left and waited to see if you were just grabbing some water. But they realized you were gone. And you showered without me? Reooo~ what the heck. Can you at least dry my hair still…"
"My, my, aren't you extra needy today? Fine I'll dry it, so hurry up and shower will ya?" Reo smiles.
Reo waits for Nagi by the dryers and changing area, leaning against the counter. He's scrolling on his phone catching up on social media when he feels a nudge on his thigh, he looks down to see Nagi sitting on one of the stools in front of him with his head against his lap.
Why are you such a puppy? Reo smiles and gets started on drying Nagi's hair.
They talk about the game and their thoughts during it, striking up conversations with some of the other guys that were around as well. Once Reo finishes, Nagi gets up and stretches. Just like a puppy, Reo dotes while he puts away the blow dryer and grabs his bag.
"Alright Nagi. All done! Well deserved after today's game."
"Reo's the best, I almost fell asleep," Nagi yawns.
"Mhmm don't you always?" Reo giggles.
Nagi looks at Reo with adoration for a moment. They're alone now, he can finally ask him…
"Hey you two, are you going out with us for drinks and dinner? Everyone that's going is getting on the bus," Chigiri asks from the door.
"Oh! Uhm… Well I kinda wanted to stay in and go back to the hotel for a quiet night to be honest," Reo says.
"You sure, Reo? We can go if you want," Nagi reassures Reo, immediately noticing that it's very unlike him to turn down a social event.
Reo turns to look at Nagi. That's very unlike Nagi to actually advocate for a social gathering, he's usually the one begging to go home so he can stay in bed. Well if he's offering…
"Ok we'll go, just give us a second and we'll head over!" Reo agrees while looking over to Chigiri.
Chigiri rolls his eyes and smiles at both of them. He makes sure to take his regularly scheduled jab at them as he walks away.
"Don't take too long 'partners', I'm telling the driver to give you ten minutes!"
Reo blushes and looks down.
"Well you heard the princess, so go get your stuff ready genius."
"Yea… let's go Reo," Nagi says as he takes a hold of Reo's wrists and walks them back to the locker room to gather his belongings.
#####
Everyone was having a great time while out at the bar, taking shots together and making sure to eat plenty. Reo seemed a little on edge though, and Nagi could tell. He was hoping going out would help Reo relax, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
"Reoo~ are you gonna finish your kebab? I'm still hungry." Nagi leans his head against Reo's.
"Oh? You worked up an appetite didn't you? Want me to order more food?" Reo asks as he lifts the kebab up to Nagi's face so he can have a bite.
Nagi nods as he takes a bite. But as soon as he sees Reo stand up, he does so as well, choosing to walk to the counter with him. On the walk there Nagi occasionally leans against Reo. When people stop them for a quick chat or congratulations, Nagi makes sure Reo stays close by.
Despite everyone drinking and celebrating, the night was was uneventful for the most part, which was good. After a few more drinks, Reo finally started to relax a bit, and that made Nagi relax as well. Happy wife, happy life or however the saying goes… speaking of wife…
"Hey Reo," Nagi turns to look at Reo but sees Reo standing up just as he turns.
"Hmm? Where are you going Reo?" Nagi tilts his head to the side a bit.
"Sorry Nagi, I have to use the restroom," Reo says trying to avoid eye contact with Nagi.
He's so cute he's such a puppy I HATE THIS! Reo thinks.
"I'll go with you."
"No it's ok! I'll be back don't worry," Reo smiles and leaves.
Nagi gives it a couple of minutes before he starts to fuss about Reo not being back. He can't shake the feeling that something's wrong. Reo starts to close up and hide away when he's not ok, and that's what he's doing right now.
Nagi shoots Reo a text, but after no response for another five minutes, Nagi gets up and goes to look for him.
Meanwhile, Reo was outside in the patio of the restaurant. Thankfully no one was outside due to the weather being chilly, but that same deterrent was the reason Reo was shivering while wallowing in his anxiety. The small fire pit the business had outside wasn't enough to warm him up unfortunately, but the flames were enough to keep him distracted while he gathered his thoughts.
He had to tell Nagi. He wanted to hide it for as long as he could, but he should've just told him as soon as he decided on what he was planning on doing when the time came if the national team were to win another World Cup.
He was going to find out anyways, but Nagi should've been the first one to know…
He's going to hate you for not saying anything… He's going to find you boring… He's going to—
"Reo? What are you doing out here, I've been texting you," Nagi softly asks.
Speak of the devil…
Reo keeps his gaze away from Nagi, choosing to look at his hands clasped together on the railing of the patio instead. He was shivering because he was cold, but it's safe to say he was also shivering now due to his anxiety and nervousness as well.
"Reo?" Nagi pokes.
He walks up next to him and leans against him, hoping to warm him up.
"I'm sorry Nagi," Reo bursts out."I forgot to tell you I needed some air too."
Liar, you can't even tell him the truth right now, can you?
Reo bites his lip and leans his head against Nagi's chest, trying hard to hold in tears. He rubs his face back and forth, hoping it helps, but it doesn't get rid of the painful lump in his throat.
Nagi hugs Reo tight. He's got a feeling of what to expect the next couple of weeks. It was bound to happen at some point, Reo always did plan on keeping up with his alleged responsibilities anyways. All Nagi can do now is just reassure Reo, it's what he needs.
"It's ok Reo. I just wanted to make sure you were ok."
Reo lets a few tears slip out and hugs Nagi. The two stay like that for several minutes before deciding to leave and spend the rest of the night quietly at their hotel room.

Manshine City's and Japan's National Team Player, Mikage Reo, Set to Retire!
After winning two consecutive World Cups with the Japanese national team, valuable and versatile player Mikage Reo,The Chameleon, has made the decision to retire from soccer and focus on his scholarly efforts in order to start taking the reigns from the current Mikage Corporation CEO, his father.
"I couldn't have asked for anything more, soccer has done so much for me, helping me find my true self and allowing me to express myself. Through soccer I was able to meet many people, including the genius Nagi Seishiro! (Please continue to support Japan's genius). I was able to show the world what I'm made of and bear the fruits of the labor and hardwork that I've put in on my own without my family name being a handicap or leverage. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and my fans for cheering me on!"
Mikage has not given much more aside from this statement, his PR team has informed us that he is choosing to spend this time in private with close ones.
#####
"Ughhhh I think that's everything! I think I'm missing a few shirts though, but I'm sure they're somewhere lost in here," Reo says while looking around.
During their time playing soccer professionally, Nagi and Reo continued to play for Manshine City after Blue Lock. Together they bought a condo in England and would travel to Japan together when they played with the country's team. Reo was grateful for the time he got to spend with Nagi as roommates and teammates, but all good things must come to an end he supposes.
"Yea, I'm not sure where those clothes went Reo... I'm sure they'll pop up somewhere," Nagi says. He was very much the culprit of the missing shirts.
"If I forget anything, just let me know."
"You're forgetting me Reo…" Nagi pouts and leans his head on Reo's shoulder.
"Nonsense, I'm sure you'll have a blast having this place to yourself now. Are you sure you're ok with all the trinkets and decorations I got staying here? It's not cramping your style is it?"
Nagi nods his head in objection quickly. Never, it's all he'll have left of Reo in this space after tomorrow. Reo cant take anything else, he just can't.
"This is fine Reo, you can leave that stuff here, and when you come visit you can check it all out again, you know," Nagi tries to reason, hoping Reo gets the hint that he wants him to visit when he can.
"That's true," Reo agrees while petting Nagi's soft hair.
"Well, after tomorrow, I'll be back to being a student and back to the mundane life of exams and studying. At least I was able to take a few classes in between seasons, so if I'm lucky I'll only have about a year of cramming and I can graduate after that."
"Reo don't overdo it. Sleep is good too, you know."
"Don't worry Treasure, I'll try not to."
"Also, you really can't have a boring life Reo. Even with school, exciting and fun things can happen right? I mean, that's how we met didn't we?"
Reo widens his eyes in surprise. How does he always know what to say.
"That was high school. This is going to be a bit different don't you think?" Reo counters while removing himself from Nagi.
He turns to walk to the big living room window, and Nagi follows right behind.
"I don't think so. We'll just be in different timezones but," Nagi stops, unsure of what to say.
It's true they're going to be apart, but they've both grown since their time in Blue Lock, so there shouldn't be any worries. This just means they have to put a little more effort into keeping things going. But Reo doesn't get it, Nagi thinks. For now, all they can do is wait and see what unfolds for the next couple of months with this new change…
#####
Reo checks his watch, he's finally done with his lectures for today and it's about morning for Nagi. Debating on calling, Reo pulls up Nagi's contact, he hadn't been able to speak to him all weekend due to a match and Reo being busy with studying and family events.
Actually now that he thinks about it, wouldn't Nagi be tired from having to be busy all weekend playing and doing promos? Maybe he should leave him be. Yea, Reo thinks, that's probably for the best, it's not like I had anything new and exciting to share with him anyways.
Reo exits outs of the call log and decides to work out and get dinner ready for himself instead. He has a busy week ahead of him anyways so he might as well get all his important tasks planned ahead so he doesn't lose track of any progress he's made with school. Hes trying to prove a point to his father and to the people who think he's just using his name to get things handed to him. He can't afford to get anything less than A's and maybe a few B's this year.
Meanwhile in the England, Nagi wakes up hoping to see a text from Reo. He's a bit sad when he doesn't see one, but he figures Reo's been busy with schoolwork. He remembers Reo mentioning a family event earlier last week as well. Maybe Reo's tired and just trying to get through his Monday. Nagi sighs and tries to go back to sleep. It's a lost cause, as all he can think about is his purple haired partner.
He picks up his phone and starts typing up a message for Reo. He hits send and waits for a reply.
[N: Reooo, good morning UxU]
Back on Reo's end, he hears the ping of his phone. He just got done with dinner when he sees the message from Nagi and smiles fondly. Maybe he really was overthinking everything afterall.
[R: My treasure, you're awake so early! Great job on that last game, you were amazing like always!]
[N: Reooo when will you visit me ;( ]
[R: Not sure genius :( School really has been taking over, I'm so sorry. Would a video call suffice? We can plan some time to sit and catch up?]
[N: yisss plz UxU you and me Friday night, ok??]
Reo laughs.
[R: Uhm, my Friday or your Friday night? Remember my night is your day lol]
[N: hmmm your Saturday morning ? And my Friday night ?]
[R: You sure you can handle that? Do you have any practice or interviews that day or the next?!]
[N: its fine Reo! I'll see you Saturday morning (Friday night) UxU]
#####
Saturday morning comes around and Reo is ready for the call, but not really. He had an unexpected event with his father that he has to attend to, and so he plans to get all his weekend homework done this morning. He hopes Nagi understands. He'll start the call caching up and if Nagi wants to stay on the line with him, he'll work on his homework while on the call, it's no different than when Nagi is playing his games really! Reo doesn't mind at all when Nagi does that anyways, as he enjoys just being with him, so maybe it's the same for Nagi.
His laptop starts showing a notification, it was Nagi.
"Hey!"
"Reo~" Nagi is laying in bed using his laptop for the call as well.
"How are you? How was your week, Genius?"
"Ehhhh I've just been practicing like always and doing boring ads with the team. You know Chris doesn't lose any opportunity to advertise something."
"Some things don't change do they?" Reo laughs.
"Reo, how are you? How is school? And how is your side job? You're getting sleep right?"
"School is school. My part time has been manageable. I do hate using my father's connections for it, but their flexible shifts come in handy for my crazy school schedule."
"Why are you even working Reo? It just means less time to talk to me."
"You know how I am. I don't wanna rely on my old man's money and my retirement money from soccer probably isn't as much as yours will be, I wanna have a bit in savings and some spending cash for myself. I already used my savings to pay for my schooling on top of that so I don't have as much saved up."
"Wow Reo is always thinking ahead and with dollar signs too? I guess I get it, but even if you used up your savings, I bet you still have plenty to get you by," Nagi points out.
"You know it! And again, I know I do have the privilege of having extra money even after paying for school, but I really don't want to be a spoiled brat anymore. You know I just want to make sure my achievements are my own and not my family's name." He laughs. He hasn't felt this relaxed in an while, even while talking about his family.
They continue to talk and Reo starts doing some homework, after Nagi says it's ok. The two get into a comfortable silence, Nagi playing on his games and Reo doing his homework and studying. Reo occasionally hears Nagi yawn.
"You know we can hang up if you'd like. I'm sorry I'm being a bit of a bore doing this, I have a dinner tonight, so I need to get this done now. You must be tired as well."
"No Reo it's ok! I just wanna be here with you…"
Reo blushes and keeps working, he doesn't notice how Nagi sometimes just stops playing his games and stares at the screen watching him do his work. It reminds Nagi of their time in high school, seeing Reo put all his focus into his work, making sure to not leave any page unturned.
Nagi slowly feels himself dozing off, the call had been going on for two hours if not longer. It was getting late and Nagi did have practice that morning so he's definitely more tired compared to if he didn't have practice. He doesn't have the heart to tell Reo, nor does he want to end the call either, he likes hearing Reo breathe and seeing him study. It's his own personal ASMR. Eventually sleep overcomes him and he falls into a slumber without turning off his laptop.
Reo notices when Nagi starts letting out little snores. He smiles seeing him fast asleep and ends the call.
"Sleep tight, my Treasure," Reo whispers and turns off the call and closes his laptop.
He's not your treasure or partner anymore. He's an acquaintance, a friend at best. But nothing more.
Nagi wakes up to his dead laptop. Crap, I forgot to say goodnight to Reo.
He reaches for his phone to send a text.
[N: sorry Reo, fell asleep. goodnight or day. I hope we can talk again soon UxU]
Reo only likes the message.
#####
It's been several weeks since the two have separated. They try to plan video calls to catch up, Nagi calls them dates, but Reo thinks he's silly for that.
The next time Reo tries to talk to him, it's his morning once again, but it's the weekend, meaning it's Friday night for Nagi. He finds out through Chigiri's social media that they're out at a bar. Today was supposed to be their routine video call to catch up, Nagi was the one who planned it at that, so it's a bit of bummer that Nagi didn't mention anything beforehand, especially since they've been texting all week anyways. But Reo isn't surprised, hell, even during the last few calls they had, Nagi was struggling to stay awake even when it was daytime for him. Reo cant blame him though, really what's exciting about the life he lives at the moment, nothing.
In the video, Reo sees Nagi sitting at one of the tables, but he can see a brunette woman sitting next to him. She looks eager as she speaks to him, looking full of life with wide eyes directed at Nagi. Nagi is sitting there, he's stoic as always, but it doesn't look like he's completely blowing her off. Well, it can't be helped, at least she's pretty, Reo thinks.
He puts his phone down and tries to distract himself by watching a movie and looking at his stocks instead. It does little to nothing for him and after about an hour he checks Chigris posts again. He's a sucker for pain. Another video has been uploaded and while Chigiri is not purposely trying to have Nagi in the video, Reo is able to see Nagi still sitting next to the girl from earlier. In fact, it seems he's even interested in what she's saying to him at that.
Reo grips his phone, he feels his heart drop to his stomach. Technically they were supposed to get on call about an hour ago, and he hasn't gotten any texts from Nagi asking if he's available. But Reo shouldn't be one to talk, he himself hasn't reached out either. But hey, he was there ready for the call! Nagi is the one that's out and about at a bar. Talking to some girl… and being interested in her too…
Reo tries to forget about the call and instead decides on going to his building's gym to work out, at least he'll be productive that way.
That night Nagi waits for Reo to call, since it's Reo's morning, he wants to make sure it's Reo reaching out when he's ready since he has to wake up and stuff. But, he doesn't get a call or text. He really wanted Reo to call, he didn't expect to be stuck this late with the team but he couldn't find a way out of it, not when Chigiri was dragging him along. He even tried saying he had a date with Reo, but everyone told him it's not a date if it's a call, and dragged his huge self along anyways.
Nagi kept checking his phone throughout the night. By this point he had some girl trying to hit on him. And while he was trying to be nice when he rejects her, she doesn't leave. Instead, she lingers for longer and tries to keep flirting with him.
It's not until Nagi tells her he's planning on proposing to his partner that she stops any advances and instead drops the news that she's a wedding planner. Oh, the synchronicities life throws at you.
She shows Nagi some of her work and she even gives him recommendations on how to propose and different ring types and diamonds he can go with. She asks questions about his partner and Nagi does his best to tell her all about Reo without saying his name for Reo's own privacy. All the while Nagi never gets a response to the text he sent Reo, asking him if he was ok.
#####
It's been months since Reo had retired and gone to university, his friendship with Nagi has been rocky, not much communication since that day when Nagi was out while Reo was ready for their video call. It's been hit or miss, Reo makes sure to be short whenever they do talk or text. Nagi used to send daily texts after that incident, but gradually the messages had become more scarce until they stopped all together.
Reo had tried taking up different hobbies and keeping himself busy with school and work. He started working out more, not necessarily to get stronger, but to get his mind in check and get rid of any distractions he had in regards to Nagi.
He still religiously watches any games Manshine has and keeps up with any news relating to Nagi. He really has so much more to show the world, and Reo couldn't be more proud, but he can't deny that he's a bit upset he wasn't able to be alongside Nagi throughout this.
Really, Reo doesn't mean to keep Nagi at arms length, but he can't help himself. Nagi shouldn't concern himself with him, not when Nagi's been having such a successful career, probably more than when Reo was playing soccer with him. He's seen plenty of remarks from fans of Nagi saying his playing and skills have gotten much better since he retired, since he wasn't around to bring him down. Others would argue that Nagi just looks like he's going through the motions and isn't the same after Reo left. Reo will choose to believe the former.
They aren't wrong, Reo thinks. Things are better for him this way, we're gonna walk different paths now.
Reo is brought out of his thoughts when his phone starts ringing, upon seeing Nagi's name in the caller ID, he debates on answering it. He wants to leave it alone, but something in his gut is telling him to answer.
"Hello?"
"Reo? Reo… I'm sick. I don't feel good," Nagi says on the other line. He sounds awful, stuffy nose and shaky voice.
"What's wrong Nagi?"
"I'm sorry, I know it's late, but Reo I don't know what to do, Chigiri is out, I can't ask him for help. Reo… I don't like feeling sick."
"What do you feel? Tell me your symptoms Nagi." Reo immediately goes into "boss" mode to try and help Nagi as best as he can considering their distance.
"Reo I feel hot, I have a fever but I'm also freezing. My tummy has been acting up, I can't hold down any of my bread snacks or jelly."
"Is your body aching? Do you have a headache? I don't think you have a stomach bug, probably the flu."
"No stomach bug Reo, but I think it's the flu too. What do I do…"
Hearing Nagi sound so distressed and in pain was stressing Reo out. But what more can he do? He can probably get some essentials delivered to Nagi's apartment, but what good will that do if Nagi will have to get up and do things himself. Nagi has never been one to handle illness well, especially since he rarely gets sick anyways, despite his atrocious diet before Reo met him.
"I'm sorry Nagi, but the best I can do is get you some meds and food sent to your place. Stay hydrated and get as much rest as you can. Maybe I can see if we can get some soup sent over, something bland so your stomach doesn't get upset. And I can-"
"Reo, I don't wanna sleep, I keep having bad dreams. I just want you here… I don't like being sick."
Crazy fever dreams, Reo thinks.
"I know Nagi, but I can't get there in a day, it would be several hours for me to get there assuming I can even get a flight today. What I can do for you now is order some stuff for you and you just make sure to grab it. Ok?"
"But Reo's rich, he can't use a private plane?"
Reo stops. Nagi had a point, but Reo isn't necessarily trying to get a private jet just to get Nagi's flu under control. It's a bit much to reach out to his father's travel agent and ask them for a private jet or a last minute flight to the England. But Reo can't stop himself when he pulls up the agent's number, and starts typing up a message, asking him for any available private planes or even regular flights to get him to Nagi ASAP.
Reo can't let Nagi know his plans, so he acts the part and keeps telling him about different things he knows off the top of his head to help with the flu symptoms.
"But more than anything, just please try to get some sleep Nagi. It's the most important thing your body needs right now."
"I can't Reo, I don't like these weird dreams…"
"Please try to."
"Reo, can you help me sleep then? Can you sing, like you used to?"
Reo is taken back. He hasn't sung to Nagi in ages, but it did always lull him to sleep, even during the day when napping wasn't on his to do list. This is one thing he can do for him.
"Ok Nagi, tell me what you want to hear then," Reo says as he gets some belongings ready for his travels.
#####
Reo arrives to England, he's not sure how or when he lost his mind to do this, but it's a little too late now, he was already in the damn country anyways. Reo stops by the grocery store he used to frequent when he lived in the area and buys several ingredients to make some meals for Nagi, along with different drinks and additives to keep Nagi hydrated for a while. Once the cab driver arrives to the apartment, Reo starts taking all the bags down and the driver offers to help with any he couldn't hold so that he didn't have to make several trips back and forth. After helping him out, Reo tips the driver and thanks him before reaching in his pocket to get the keys to the condo. Reo walks in and sees all the lights still off. The delivery that was sent to Nagi remains untouched, it looked like Nagi had only brought it into the kitchen but didn't make any use of it.
It's earlier in the morning, so he's trying his best to be quiet when he starts messing around in the kitchen, getting a bland breakfast ready for Nagi. He puts some water to boil, so he can make them a tea as well.
While he waits for the food to be ready, he looks around the place. It looks exactly the same as when he left. He gets an overflow of memories from when he lived here and chuckles to himself when he remembers funny times they shared. He really did miss all of this, and Nagi.
Reo goes back to finishing making breakfast. He decided on making a simple porridge for Nagi along with some cut up fruit. Definitely not the tastiest, but it should be easy enough for Nagi's stomach to handle at the moment. He places everything on a tray, goes to open the bedroom door quietly, then walks in with everything. He places it on the nightstand before waking up Nagi, slowly.
He pushes the hair from Nagi's forehead back, using the movement to check his temperature as well. He was still burning up. He touches his cheeks and neck as well to see if the areas were just as warm. He slowly pushes Nagi's shoulder trying to rouse him awake. Nagi grumbles and slowly starts opening his eyes. When his vision focuses on Reo he closes them again, not believing it was real. Reo keeps trying to wake him up anyways.
"Nagi. Wake up, I have breakfast here for you and some tea with meds. Let's get you feeling better ok?"
"Mmm, finally a better dream, I don't wanna wake up," Nagi mumbles.
Reo lets out a sigh of contentment. That's very sweet of Nagi, but he really does need him to wake up. Reo shakes his shoulder again, and he even decides to open up the blinds a bit to let some light in. He sees Choki, and the other succulents they got during their time together, sitting by the window. He greets Choki with his usual finger prick and says hello to the other succulents.
"Come on Nagi, wake up before breakfast gets cold. Choki is awake too, he told me to tell you to wake up!"
"Hmmm? It's not a dream? It's really Reo," Nagi says more focused, sleep still in his voice.
Nagi sits up and rubs his eyes. He looks at Reo and then at the tray next to the bed. He feels like he could cry, Reo did really come all the way just to take care of him? Life is too good to him, Reo is too good to him.
"Reooo~ you're here? You really came?"
"Yes ,I did. And I will regret getting myself jet lagged when I go back to school in a few days, but for now I'm going to focus on helping you feel better ok?"
"Reo, you're amazing. Mmm so happy!"
"Alright let me check your temp really quick, and then you're gonna eat your breakfast so you can take some meds ok?"
"Okayyy~ Reo, can you help me eat? My arms hurt…"
Reo doesn't answer, instead he responds by sticking the thermometer in Nagi's mouth to check. Upon hearing the little beep, Reo reads the temperature and it shows that Nagi is still very much running a fever. Reo can't lie, he is a bit worried that Nagi's fever hasn't gotten better, so he hopes after today, his fever at least dies down, as it seems that the fever is what's giving Nagi the hardest time more than anything else.
"You're still burning up kid. Hopefully we can calm it down today," Reo says while putting the thermometer away.
Damn it can't be helped, Reo thinks.
He sits down on the side of the bed and grabs the porridge from the tray. He brings up the spoon to Nagi, much to both of their surprise. It was almost like muscle memory to Reo.
"Reo? Is this porridge? Yucky," Nagi sticks his tongue out.
"Hey you gotta eat it! Don't tell me I came all the way over here for nothing,"Reo jokes but not really. He better eat this damn food!
"I'll eat it because it's you, but when you're gone I won't," Nagi shakes his head childishly and then takes the spoonful of porridge.
"Looks like you were able to get some sleep last night as well. You were pretty knocked out right now," Reo brings up as he gets another spoonful ready for Nagi.
"Yea," Nagi says after swallowing the warm meal. "I was able to sleep because you sang to me, Reo. I didn't have bad dreams."
Reo blushes and keeps feeding Nagi. He gets some of the fruit and offers a bite to Nagi. He takes that more willingly compared to the bland porridge.
"Is Reo gonna eat?"
"I already ate Nagi, right before coming in here to give you your food. I had some toast and tea."
When Nagi finishes his breakfast Reo offers him the meds and some warm tea. Nagi takes them easily, much to Reo's surprise. Reo takes the tray out and on his way back he gets some cloths ready for Nagi's forehead and belly to help keep him cool. But before placing those on him, he gets another pair of pajamas ready for Nagi to change into.
"But why~, I'm sick anyways," Nagi whines.
"I know you are, but it's good to change your clothes so you're not wallowing in your sickness and sweat. Now get up!"
Nagi pouts and gets up, but when he realizes Reo is offering to dress him, he starts cooperating fully with no complaints. Once done, Reo places the cloths on Nagi's forehead and belly.
"How you feeling?"
Nagi yawns and gets cozy in bed. His skin is flushed, he's breathing a bit heavier than usual, and he has occasional shakes from the fever, but despite that, Nagi still looks somewhat relaxed at the same time.
"I think I got sick because of Reo withdrawals. Reo 'm sleepy now," Nagi mumbles.
"Why don't you take a nap, ok?"
"Reo, you're not leaving are you?"
"No, I'll be outside doing some work for school."
"Reo can't you do that in here?"
"I don't wanna wake you up."
"You won't, it'll be like ASMR."
Reo laughs.
"Fine, but if I'm in here I'm opening up the window and blinds to let some sunlight in."
"That's fine, whatever Reo wants," Nagi says all too quickly.
Reo spends the night in his old bedroom, and by the next morning, Nagi starts feeling much better. With his fever down, and just minor symptoms left, like body aches and stuffy nose, Reo felt a bit better going back to Japan.
"Nooo, Reo stay. Look I'm still sick!"Nagi sneezes dramatically
"Nagi I have class tomorrow, I really gotta go back and-"
"Reo please stay one more day…"
Reo looks at Nagi. Curse him for having the perfect puppy dog eyes. Reo already acted impulsively by coming to England on a whim just for this, he really shouldn't stay another day. Not to mention he was getting real attached to the place and Nagi again. It's only going to end in him being hurt when he has to go back to Japan and back to his regular routine. He really shouldn't, and yet…
"Fine, I'll stay one more day. But I'm not feeding you or changing your clothes! You're feeling a bit better to do that on your own!"
"Ok Reo!"
Reo regrets the decision immediately, or so he thinks. But maybe, it's ok to be self indulgent sometimes, Reo has been working hard at school, he deserves a little break too.
The next morning, Reo gathers his belongings and gets ready to say goodbye to Nagi. He was able to find a flight again, and already emailed his professors saying that he won't be in for class today, but will still email in any assignments that were due.
Reo walks to Nagi's bedroom to say goodbye. It's still really early, the sun isn't even out so he feels bad for waking him up.
"Alright Nagi I'll be heading back home now."
"No, Reo stay…," Nagi says sleepily.
He walks Reo to the door and gives him one final hug before seeing Reo walk out once again.
They both feel like they're on the verge of tears once the door closes.
Reo gets in the cab and upon telling the driver his destination , he sits back and watches out the window. It wasn't until about a few minutes into the drive does he realize that he never wore a mask while staying with Nagi while he was sick….
Great…
#####
More time away passes, and once Reo had gotten back from visiting Nagi, things went back to how they were, little to no communication. They never did go back to their video calls and any texts that are sent, are hours apart, if not a whole day or two. It was better this way, Reo could focus on what he needed to. Besides, the national team had been participating in preliminary matches to qualify in the World Cup, meaning Nagi has been busy as well anyways.
This is confirmed when Nagi sends Reo a text saying he'll be in Japan for a home game, the last one that will determine if they'll be in the World Cup. He tells him he's not sure when he'll be free, but that he can try and make time to meet with him. Reo doesn't answer until the next day.
[N: Reo! I'll be in Japan for a bit with the next game being a home game UxU I know I'm going to be a bit busy but maybe I can make some time so we can meet and catch up? How are your days looking like so far?]
[R: Sorry Nagi, was busy with school work! I think I’ll also be a bit busy as well with school and work. If we can’t meet that’s not a big deal, what with our schedules, but I’ll try to go to the game to watch you guys play!]
#####
The day of the home game comes, and Reo couldn't help himself when he goes to the stadium to see the match in person. He requests a private viewing suite, where it's just him and Baaya watching from a distance. Reo always did like to see the whole field instead of being so up close.
The opposing team actually puts up a good fight. Japan wins by a hair, with a final goal that breaks the tie right at the last minute. And who else would be the one to score that goal? Nagi Seishiro.
Reo jumps from his seat shouting for the victory. It doesn't quite feel the same as when he's there celebrating with Nagi, but this was something he would need to get used to anyways. He'll celebrate Nagi's victories on the side lines from now on instead of by his side.
Meanwhile on the field, Nagi celebrates the winning goal, he feels everyone start to jump around him and grab onto him, everyone is excited and the energy is booming. But despite all the celebrations, Nagi doesn't get the same feeling as when Reo was right next to him. No one's touch sent tingles down his spine. He feels like a god, but what's the point when he doesn't have his most devoted follower and believer beside him. He doesn't even know if Reo is watching. He hopes he is.
In the locker room Nagi sits away from everyone and checks his phone, hoping to see any messages from Reo. There is none. He shoots him a text himself, and hopes it gets a response. It doesn't. Nagi sees a drop fall onto his screen, oh he's tearing up. What a pain.
Nagi gets up and goes to the showers quickly before anyone sees him. He can blame the red eyes on the shampoo from washing his hair. During the shower, all Nagi can think about is how much he misses Reo right now. He misses how the last time they got qualified for the World Cup, Reo kept talking his ear off, he tends to ramble when he's happy and excited. He misses how Reo would spoil him for working hard during the game, and how Reo would be so excited he had sparkles in his eyes. There's so many things he misses, he just wants things to go back to how they used to be. He misses Reo.
That night the team goes out to celebrate, Nagi does everything in his power to avoid it but it proves useless. He spends the night on his phone waiting to see if Reo ever replies to any messages he sends throughout the night, he never does.
#####
Reo finally gets his graduation date, and to his luck it falls on the final match of the World Cup, Japan versus Germany. Unfortunately, Reo won't be able to see the match. But he's been keeping up up with all the other games, he can only hope the team takes the World Cup trophy once again for the third year in a row.
Of course he doesn't tell Nagi this information, that's the last thing Reo wants Nagi to worry about. But in order to try and stay amicable, he does send him a text letting him now all the efforts he's put in for school are finally coming to fruition.
[R: I'll be graduating soon finally! I was getting tired of school! :3]
[N: yayyyy, Reo I'm so happy. When are you graduating? UxU]
Reo never replies back.
Graduation day comes and to keep his nerves calm, Reo chooses to ignore any news about the World Cup or soccer in general. Japan is several hours ahead from where the match is taking place, so at least this makes it easier for Reo. And once the ceremony was done he was going to be attending the graduation party that his parents are holding for him anyways. He should have plenty to do to keep him distracted.
Reo's nervous, but he's thankful he doesn't have to speak for this graduation ceremony in comparison to his high school one. He doesn't feel like having all the attention on him anyways.
"Thanks for dropping me off Granny. You should be able to park close by! I'll see you inside!"
"Of course young master. And once again, congratulations. I'll see you inside."
Reo walks to the designated area for students and waits for the ceremony to commence. He greets several of his classmates and they talk about plans for the future. Reo tries his best to stay engaged and not reach for his phone.
Meanwhile at the airport Nagi rushes to get his bag and meet with the driver that Granny sent for him. He practically runs out of the airport and looks around for the driver, when he finally spots him he rushes over. He throws his bag and himself into the car. The driver catches on to the Nagi's urgency and quickly gets in the car and drives off, matching the energy.
Nagi feels bad, he really does. He doesn't want to show up to Reo's graduation looking like a hot mess, but he doesn't have time to change into his suit. At best, he can wear the slacks and the buttoned shirt but he'll have to change in the car. Not to mention he still needs to pick up Reo's gift as well. But that can wait until after the graduation, he'll pick that up before going to the party.
He sends a text to Baaya, letting her know he's on the way and apologizes for the state he'll be in when he gets there. He hates having to please people and he's never cared to do so anyways, but with everything going on, he actually is trying to make an effort to look put together in front of Reo's parents.
He finally arrives to the venue and Baaya is outside waiting for him. She walks him into the private viewing area that Reo's parents have for them and other family members, they were nice enough to even allow Nagi to be here. He takes a seat, not too close to Reo's parents, but still in a good seat where he can get a clear view of Reo.
"Have you gotten your present for the young master?"
"No, I'll be going afterwards to pick it up. That way I also have time to properly change too. Thanks for getting all the accommodations set up for me Granny."
"Of course Master Seishiro. Anything that will result in the young master's happiness," Baaya gently nods and takes a seat next to Nagi.
The ceremony ends and everyone starts dispersing. Nagi unfortunately can't stick around to congratulate Reo, but he does greet Reo's parents and lets them know he's grateful that he got to play soccer with their son.
"Will you be attending the party, Seishiro?" Reo's mom asks.
"Yes ma'am," Nagi responds, surprised he used such formalities. He really is nervous afterall.
"I just have to get some things in order first, it's a pain but I can't get to party until that's sorted. Which I gotta go do now! Bye bye Reo's parents," Nagi says as he walks out.
Reo's parents give eachother a confused look. They'll never really understand what Reo sees in this friend of his, but they can appreciate and understand that Nagi Seishiro really does appreciate their son for the person he is and not for the money or name.
#####
Reo takes one last look at himself in the dressing room of the penthouse. The party has started awhile ago,but he needed time to get himself together and face the event. He still feels guilty about not saying anything to Nagi, but his soccer career comes first, and the last thing he wants is for Nagi to feel like he had to come, even if Reo were to tell him not to attend.
Still keeping to his word about avoiding any information about the team's game today, Reo has restricted his phone to only his financial apps and news articles that don't pertain to sports. It's a bit boring, but it keeps him away from that, and at least he'll have this party to eat up his time as well. He figures he'll hear about the outcome at some point tonight, if not tomorrow.
Reo steps out and walks downstairs to the party area. He greets a couple of guests he meets along the way before meeting up with his parents. He notices quickly that Baaya wasn't around, he's not sure if she had to step away, but he's always worried when she's MIA without his knowledge.
He greets his parents, his mom giving him a tight hug, and his dad coming in with a firm handshake. They introduce him to the man they were speaking with, a business associate of his father, and Reo knows exactly where this was headed…
"Son, I'm sure you remember breifly meeting Mr. Enoki. His own daughter will be finishing with her degree very soon as well. He says she's majoring in law. Exciting isn't it? She's close in age with you."
Reo wants to roll his eyes so bad. His dad means well, but he really doesn't want to think about marriage anytime soon, he wants to make a name for himself in his business endeavors first and foremost before even thinking of marriage. But Reo, he'll play along for show anyways. He'll have to break it to the girl and both their parents another time.
"That's great! I'm glad she's pursuing a great career, does she have any plans on specializing in a specific field of law?"
"Well my good boy, why don't you ask her yourself! She's here tonight! I'll make sure you both get acquainted!" The stuffy businessman laughs and walks away.
Reo turns to his parents right after. He smiles at them, not a kind one, but one of annoyance.
"Really? You guys couldn't have waited at least until after I got myself a job at least?"
"Reo, you have a job waiting for you in my company. What better time to meet a future wife than now, son. You're finished with school, all you need to focus on is your career."
"Exactly! I want to focus on my career first before even considering marriage. I'm sorry mother, father, but I will be denying any proposals or arranged marriages for the foreseeable future. Not until I'm well established on my own."
Reo's dad was about to speak until his mom grabbed her husband's hand and gave him a look. Reo's mom has always shown her feelings with her eyes, it's something that draws Reo to trust his mother more than his father. A warming embrace even when they argue.
"Sweetheart, we understand. And I'll make sure your father respects these wishes of yours," she turns to look at her husband.
"But please, can you at least meet the young lady and be friendly. Maybe you don't have to consider marriage now but even going out with her and getting to know her might be a nice start."
"I don't want to lead her on if I don't plan on marrying her. But I'll at least meet her and exchange contact information, no promises aside from that," Reo firmly states.
"Thank you dear," his mom smiles at him, and it's enough to ease some tension off his shoulders.
Reo is grateful that his mom has started to be more understanding and the middle man between him and his father. She's been urging his dad to be more understanding and less suffocating towards Reo. He couldn't be more thankful.
Almost as if on cue, the man and his daughter walk up to Reo and his parents. The young lady is pretty, she's a bit taller, not as tall as Reo. She has long, shiny, black hair, and her skin a fair complexion that makes the small blush on her nose from the cold stand out. Her eyes are a dark brown, and she wore round glasses. Overall, she was cute, she gave "sweet girl that works at a bakery" vibes. Reo hopes she doesn't take it hard when he has to turn down any marriage proposals.
"Mikage, meet my lovely daughter!"
Reo smiles and bows, ever the gentleman he takes her hand and kisses it, one thing he'll do is play the part for looks.
#####
In a hotel room, Nagi throws himself onto the bed after being out. He finally got Reo's gift, but now he has to get ready to go to the party. He checks his phone to see any updates on the game, and it looks like the score is in Japan's favor as of now. The team did promise to win as a gift for Reo's graduation, so Nagi hopes they make do on that promise.
He gets up to shower and change, and once he's done, he quickly checks his camera at home to make sure Choki and his friends are ok. Yes, Nagi is in fact one of those parents. He couldn't take Choki so he promised him he would check up on him and make sure the plant light was on during the day since he couldn't leave the windows open for Choki and his pals. And after seeing that he was ok, Nagi walks out and makes his way to the party.
He's greeted by Baaya at the entrance, and she walks him to the elevators so they can go up to the penthouse floor. Reo's parents have plenty of apartment buildings, the fact that they can just choose one penthouse over another to have the party is a bit mind boggling to Nagi. He doesn't get rich people, but it's Reo so it's ok. While waiting in the elevator, Nagi turns to Baaya and bows. Baaya is a bit shocked but she lets him say what he needs to.
"Granny, I'm sorry I haven't been the best to Reo this past year. It was hard being away from eachother and I feel bad because I couldn't talk to him all the time. And I think Reo doesn't realize that we never broke up, but after today, I think he's going to understand everything. Thank you for all the help you've given me along the way, and for taking care of him when I'm not around. I promise I'll take care of him from now on."
Baaya smiles and pats Nagi's head. Nagi blushes, her head pats feel just as warm as Reo's but in a different way. They feel just like a grandma's would. He feels warm, like he's cozied up in bed with a big blanket while watching the rain fall outside his window, amazing.
"Master Seishiro, I don't doubt you will. This last year was just a rough patch like most partners have. Use it as a lesson to better yourself and your relationship with the young master. I look forward to what the future holds for both of you."
Nagi nods, his eyes glimmering, probably from tears. But hearing those words from someone who was probably closer to Reo than his own parents means a lot to Nagi.
They finally arrive to the floor and Baaya walks him to the party area, Nagi looks around for Reo but doesn't see him. He spots his parents talking to some fancy looking people, but no Reo. Baaya takes him to the changing room where Reo was in earlier, but he's not there either. Eventually the two walk towards the balcony and it's there that they spot Reo standing outside alone. The balcony was closed off to the party goers for safety reasons and Reo took that as an opportunity to get away from it all to get some fresh air. Nagi thanks Baaya and walks out to Reo.
Reo is lost in his own world, so when he hears the balcony doors open and close he quickly advises the person to leave before turning around to see who it was.
"I'm sorry but the balcony isn't for guests, I'll be out there in just a mo-"
"Reo."
"N-Nagi.. what are you… but the game, and you, and then.. but you're…"
"Congratulations on graduating Reo. You're officially smarter than me, it's on print thanks to your degree."
Reo doesn't move instead he starts crying, he looks down to hide his face, but he eventually feels Nagi's chest push up against his sunken head. Reo can only hug Nagi tightly and continue to cry. Nagi reciprocates the hug, softly rubbing Reo's back and head, letting him cry.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry Nagi. I'm sorry…"
"It's ok Reo. Don't cry."
"I'm sorry. I didn't say anything. I didn't want you to… I wanted you to focus on your career. I don't want you to be bothered by me…"
"How could I Reo… and besides," Nagi pulls away from Reo and lifts his head up to wipe the tears away from his face.
"There are more important things than soccer anyways."
Reo cries harder and hugs Nagi close to him. Nagi holds him just as tight and kisses Reo's head.
"Besides, the team knows I'm here, they told me they would win the game as a gift for your graduation. So you don't have to worry about any of that Reo. I wanted to be here with you."
"Let me guess, Baaya helped you out with all of this didn't she?"
"Yep! Granny is amazing!"
"She really is, I never want her to retire, but I also want her to enjoy her golden years down by the beach sipping from a coconut while she polishes her gun," Reo laughs.
Nagi feels his heart skip hearing that laugh after so long.
"Nagi, I'm sorry, I really am. I was terrible to you this past year. I really didn't know what to do. I thought you would've been less bored and hassle free without having to constantly plan things just to talk to me. I felt like my texts were always getting to you at a bad time. I just gave up and wanted to shut away from you. I thought it would make things easy for you… and me."
"No Reo, I'm sorry too. I could've done more to keep in touch. I shouldn't have just let things be that way either. I thought you were always busy and I didn't want you to get stressed feeling like you had to do it all and adjust your own schedule for me too. I missed you so much Reo."
"Me too, my treasure…"
Nagi blushes. Yes, I'm your treasure Reo!
"Oh that reminds me!"
"Hmm?"
Nagi pulls apart from Reo and walks Reo towards the railing, they take in the beautiful view of the nighttime lights and city. One could say they were on top of the world, and it really felt like they were.
"Reo, I wanna thank you for inviting me to play soccer. I know you feel like I never wanted any of this, but because of you, I was able to experience all of this and find something that I can do and be proud of. I don't crave the life I once did, of being a salaryman and retiring early just to play games. Being an athlete and having that as my career, I never thought of such a possibility, but because of you, it's the life I have now. I cherish it."
Reo smiles sweetly. He wipes his eyes while he waits for Nagi to continue.
"And Reo, I don't know what happened this past year, but it made me realize a lot of things. I missed you while you were away, like always. But this time, I felt a little better knowing things were a bit more stable between us. But I felt like you didn't think the same…"
"Nagi I'm sorry, I pro-"
"Reo did you think we broke up? Because I don't recall us ever having that conversation!"
Reo is surprised and shocked.
"What are you… Nagi!? I wasn't aware we were even dating in the first place!"
Nagi pouts.
"Hmmm Reo~, you promised me you would stay until the end. We were basically already married!"
Reo is standing still, shock all over his face, a blush on his cheeks and ears. He swears there's steam coming out from his head.
"EXCUSE ME?"
"Yea Reo! Well it can't be helped, so I got you this because I wanted to make sure you knew that I meant it. I was more than willing to wait until you were ready, because I know you had your plans for the future with your career and stuff, but I'm hoping this lets you know that I don't intend on letting go… Even if it takes some time for us to make it official."
"Nagi what are you talking about?"
It's not until Nagi gets down on one knee and pulls out the little box that Reo realizes what's happening.
"Reo, I wanna make do on our promise and stay with you until the end. Marry me?"
The proposal itself, very chaotic and non chalant, but Reo can tell it's coming from deep within Nagi's heart and feelings. Reo starts crying again. He pretends he didn't just tell his parents that he wasn't even thinking of marriage. That never happened! He could marry Nagi right now if it were possible.
"Yes, you’re ridiculous, but yes I'll marry you!"
Nagi places the ring on Reo's finger and stands up to lift Reo into a hug and kisses him. Funny, they were never on the same page once again, but it's ok, because going forward that will change for the better. As far as how they'll pull this off, that's not important, and it can be their little secret, and Baaya's. They'll worry about Reo's parents later.
"You can't just ask someone to marry them without even letting them know you were apparently dating them for the last couple of years!"
"I thought we were dating since before Blue Lock Reo? Everyone was already calling you my super elite wife anyway," Nagi pouts.
"Once again, that was high school, that's a bit.. different. But whatever the case, I'll be your wife anyways!"
"Yay~ Reo, my real wife," Nagi rubs his face against Reo's neck just like a puppy.
"Hey Reo, Granny said this past year was rough for both of us, but she said we'll learn from it. What do you think?"
"I think we will. Though to be honest, if I knew we were 'dating' these past couple of months, I would have very much approached all of this a bit differently," Reo grunts.
"It's ok, I forgive Reo for being a bit silly, just as long as you call me treasure again. I missed it Reo~."
"You're unbelievable… my Treasure," Reo laughs while petting Nagi's head.
They share one more kiss before hearing cars honking and some people cheering. Reo, worried people saw them, quickly checks over the railing but it seems no one was noticing them. Rather, something else. Reo can see some of the giant screens below showcasing the national team celebrating. Reo smiles and Nagi nods in approval. Seems like Japan is taking home another trophy once again.
"They did it! Well I'll be damned, I couldn't have asked for a better night," Reo excitedly says and hugs Nagi close to him, letting his head rest against Nagi.
"I'm glad Reo is happy. Now, can we get married tomorrow?"
The two look out into the city, the cool breeze pushing their hair back slightly. Reo laughs.
"Don't get too excited. We still have to tell my parents, and right after I told them I wasn't planning on getting married anytime soon."
Nagi frowns and drops his head in defeat.
The ultimate boss battle…
