Romancing The Lord - An Enver Gortash Origin Companion Idea

Summary:

A hypothesis on turning Lord Enver Gortash our resident tyrannical Archduke from Villain to Protagonist with changes to lore, crafting a new villain to take his place, creating a personal quest, romance, and giving him a class designation.

Notes:

This was meant to be a short reddit post but there was so much to discuss and conceptualise that it ended up being over 9000 words long. This hypothesis looks at what changes to the game and lore would need to be made for him to be a fully recruitable playable character. I have spent way too much time thinking about this.

Work Text:

Lord Enver Gortash. For an Archduke hellbent on controlling the world he sure doesn't feel as imposing as a villain like Ketheric Thorm or as unhinged as Orin, he has very little to do as a NPC after the Coronation. So I had an idea, what if he was an Origin Companion we could recruit in Act 1 and take through the game. What sort of approvals/disapprovals would he have, how would he work as a romanceable companion, how would his connections to Wyll and Karlach be affected as a companion? If Gortash is not the Chosen of Bane and the villain of the story, who is? I have some ideas with some adjustments to lore made so he can be a viable companion without losing access to other companions (Basically how can we keep him and Karlach in the party without them killing each other).

Let's start with the basics:

Background, Class and Subclass, Skills, Starting Equipment:

Enver Gortash would be an Artificer Class, which would give us a brand new class to play through as a Tav/Durge and his default subclass would be Armorer. Despite being a Lord he would have the Criminal background, gaining you inspiration for the criminal aspects of the game. As for starting equipment, he would start off with a Light Hammer and a Heavy Crossbow, the standard supply pack, 2 Healing Potions, Revivify Scroll, plus one Trap Disarm Kit and 2 Alchemist Fire. He would also start off with unique Artificer Armour called ‘Enver’s Workshop Attire’ plus a set of ‘Workshop Goggles’ that grant a +2 to Perception checks and his camp clothes would be a standard button-down shirt with a waistcoat, trousers and tasteful boots.

He will have two proficiencies unique to him as an Origin Companion: Musical Instruments and Heavy Crossbows, although he won’t come with a musical instrument, he will be able to play them. Like how Minsc will play the drum in camp if you recruit him, you might see him playing the violin on occasion.

He would have skill proficiencies in Stealth and Deception due to his Criminal background as well as History, Religion, Sleight of Hand, and Arcana.

Enver Gortash Artificer Concept

Using the Artificer Mod from KiderionLykon on Nexus to give us a rough idea of how his stats and proficiencies would be distributed.

Personal Quest:

Enver’s personal quest would be The Lordling:

"We have met Lord Enver Gortash, a Baldurian Counsellor recently elevated to Lord status who is also infected with a parasite, he's agreed to join our party and find a cure for this tadpole. Enver has explained that a friend of his named Barcus Wroot might be in the area, we should help look for him."

Enver’s personal quest will involve the Ironhand and Gondian Gnomes conflict and Bane, linking him to the main storyline once Act 3 begins. Enver will explain that Barcus should be in the area and that he wants to find him. (If you accidentally kill Barcus via the windmill, the amulet from Wulbren will be found on his corpse as loot and will still progress his quest).

If Enver is in the party and you find Barcus being tormented by the Goblins, you will get a cutscene where Enver will free Barcus, bypassing the ability to accidentally kill him by flinging him off the Windmill. Barcus will explain he’s looking for Wulbren and Enver will ask if he’s made any headway and Barcus will explain that he’s heading to the Underdark next to continue the search.

Rescuing Barcus from the Windmill, the Grymforge and rescuing Wulbren from Moonrise Towers will grant you not only the Brilliant Retort bomb but also the crafting recipe as well because Enver will be able to replicate the recipe.

Once you enter Act 2 and speak to Raphael at Last Light Inn, you will learn that Enver is a former Banite in a camp cutscene, at this point you will be able to encourage him to start worshipping Bane again or discourage him from returning to Bane worship, leading to a good outcome to his personal quest or an evil outcome.

If you encourage him to worship Bane again, you’ll be able to get him to become the new Chosen of Bane in Act 3. If you discourage him, he will destroy the entire Banite Cloister in Baldur’s Gate and be rewarded by becoming a Duke.

In Act 3, Enver will learn that the Gondians are being forced by the Cult of Bane to make weapons for the Absolute and have turned his prototype Steel Watch  into an authoritarian force. This will open up the quest to find his original prototype Guardian, which he will be able to summon in combat. Envr will have the choice to either free the Gondians from the Banites or oppress them further. If Enver frees the Gondians, the situation with Wulbren will turn out the same way as it does in the game where he gets kicked out of the Ironhands, Barcus becomes the new leader and will be your allies for the final battle. If he oppresses the Gondians, Wulbren will exile Barcus from Baldur’s Gate and the Ironhands will take over the Gondian Clan. Oppressing the Gondians will give him the opportunity to become the Chosen of Bane.

After you defeat the Netherbrain, there will be two outcomes for Enver. If he was kept on the path of good, he will either be Duke Gortash in the epilogue or an adventurer. If he was kept on the path of evil, he will be the new Chosen of Bane heading up the Banite cloister and is planning a coup to become Archduke of Baldur’s Gate while the city rebuilds. If you romanced Enver and chose to go to Avernus with Karlach, there will be a special ending.

He will also have a minor personal quest similar to Karlach’s Hellion Heart called Hellfire where after you find the first piece of Infernal Iron for Karlach, Enver will say if you find any more he might be able to craft a weapon out of it. Due to the amount of Infernal Iron found in the game (11 pieces), both quests can be done. If you find a second piece and give the first piece to Karlach and talk to him about it, he will say to focus on Karlach’s heart first as his idea needs more refining. After Karlach’s second upgrade Enver will say he’s crafted a Crossbow Blueprint and needs three pieces of Infernal Iron, broken machinery parts and crystalline lens to make it. Once you have the required items (3 broken machinery parts and 3 crystalline lens, these will be added into traders inventories for easier access), Enver will craft Fabricated Arbalest his unique +2 Crossbow and complete the quest, this quest can be completed in Act 2 or Act 3.

Recruiting Enver Gortash Into Your Party:

In Act 1 at the gate to the Emerald Grove when the Goblins are attacking, one will get shot with a crossbow bolt, the camera will then focus on Enver aiming down the sight of his crossbow where he'll say this line:

"Bullseye."

Then an Eldritch Blast will kill a Goblin and Wyll will make his introduction.

After the combat encounter, you can either speak to Wyll or Enver first. If you speak to Wyll, he will mention saying we should speak to Enver as he was also on the Nautiloid and Enver will say the same if you speak to him first. Enver will be at the forge with Dammon. As you approach a cutscene will play where there will be a small explosion and Enver will ask Dammon if he’s still got eyebrows. He will turn to you and call you the ‘hero at the gate’, wave to you as he walks over, and introduce himself as ‘Lord Enver Gortash’ with a polite bow. As a Baldurian you will have the option to say:

“I know you, you’re a counsellor, since when did you become a Lord?”

To which he will reply:

“A recent title, sod’s law that I finally get my Lordship and the very next day I’m kidnapped by Mindflayers.”

The tadpole moment will be a memory of him in Baldur's Gate seeing the Nautiloid arrive and running through the city, before getting knocked to the ground.

Narrator: Your mind reaches out and a memory appears before you, you’re in Baldur’s Gate, in the Wide, arguing with a Blacksmith over the price of iron, when you see it, the Nautiloid in the sky emerging from the clouds like a Kraken from the waves. There’s panic, screaming, and you’re running through the city, you need to warn the Council. Then someone shoves you, you’re knocked to the ground and the city is gone.

He will say it’s fortuitous that he’s out in the middle of nowhere as his old friend Barcus Wroot was heading to this area to find Wulbren Bongle of the Ironhand Gnomes and perhaps they’ll run into him. Recruiting him will start his personal quest.

Camp Attire

Camp attire concept, waistcoat and shirt is a little more casual but still in his signature dark colours (From SR Legacies by Samson on Nexus dyed with the Black & Gold Dye from Basket of Equipment)

In the Wilderness Act 1 Camp, his tent setup will replace the tent with the pile of books on top of the large rock, which will have a small makeshift workshop, a pile of books, some pillows, a Lanceboard and a black and gold tent design. He will have idle camp animations consisting of reading, playing the violin, sitting on the ground sketching ideas into a book.

Approvals/Disapprovals:

For approvals and disapprovals, he will approve of you stealing, intimidation checks, deception checks, blackmailing people, being nice to children, he will approve of you doing good so long as there is a reward at the end, examples such as:

- Stealing the Idol for Mol
- Saving Arabella & telling her no more stealing
- Saving Mirkon
- Going easy on Silfy
- Helping Meli with the locket
- Using the Tadpole Powers
- Convincing Auntie Ethel to free Mayrina/free her and get the +1 Boon
- Killing Auntie Ethel
- Stealing the Orphic Hammer
- Changing the story in Stop the Presses
- Killing Lorroakan
- Using the Necromancy of Thay
- Siding with the Guild over the Zhentarim
- Leaving the Owlbear without a fight
- Telling Orin the truth about Sarevok being her father

But he will disapprove of things like:

- Letting Arabella get bitten by Teela
- Being mean to any of the Tiefling kids
- Letting Auntie Ethel keep Mayrina
- Hurting Scratch or the Owlbear cub
- Letting Isobel get kidnapped/Killing Isobel
- Letting your reputation drop if you fail Stop the Presses
- Being asked to go on stage at the Circus of Last Days
- Handing Dame Aylin over to Lorroakan
- Handing Shadowheart over to Viconia
- Licking the dead spider

Major moments he will approve of such as:

- Saving Isobel
- Freeing Dame Aylin from the Shadowfell
- Rescuing Halsin
- Freeing the Ironhands from Moonrise Towers
- Saving Minthara From Moonrise Towers
- Playing Hide & Seek With Oliver During Halsin's Shadowcurse Quest
- Saving Shadowheart’s Parents
- Astarion Not Ascending (Unless on the Banite path in which case he approves of Astarion ascending)

He will agree to use the tadpoles as he believes they are useful to the party but you will have to pass a high DC Persuasion check to convince him to use the Astral Tadpole.

Connection to Wyll and Karlach:

Enver will have known both Wyll and Karlach. Karlach was his former bodyguard before she was taken to Avernus and he knew Wyll through Ulder Ravenguard, he will mention to Wyll that Ulder has always refused to speak about him if asked. When it’s discovered how Wyll became pacted to Mizora after being freed from his pact, he will say this line:

“And the mystery of why Ulder refuses to talk about Wyll is solved. Wyll truly does live up to his father’s values, to stop the Cult of the Dragon all by himself.”

If Wyll is convinced to sign his soul over to Mizora to free Ulder Ravenguard, Enver will say this line:

“I was once foolish enough to take a Devil at her word and it cost me a dear friend, Wyll takes Mizora at her word and it has cost him his soul. I'm proud of his selflessness but disappointed that he walked back on his desire to be free of his pact, but what’s done is done, now we have to free Ravenguard, the city depends on it.”

If, when you hunt down Karlach, Enver is in your party, he will tell Wyll to stand down because he knows her and Karlach will recognise him. Karlach will call him a 'bastard', before the tadpoles connect, after the tadpoles she will say that they can argue later and that he can start making it up to her by helping her kill the Paladins.

Argument Concept

Cutscene Concept: Karlach and Enver arguing about the truth of her exile to Avernus

This will lead to a cutscene after Wyll is transformed into a devil, where Karlach and Enver are arguing and the player character intervenes and learns that they used to be friends before he 'stabbed her in the back' and sent her to Avernus.

Enver will explain that he didn’t know she was the price he had to pay, that he was expecting to pay Zariel with gold or some rare demonic artefact she wanted found, and when he found out she had been taken by Zariel he regretted it.

Karlach: Am I supposed to believe this tripe, that you would take a Devil at their word and not see the bigger picture?

Enver: Then let the tadpole prove it, see into my mind and see what happened.

Enver will use the tadpole to reveal a memory of Zariel offering him an Infernal Engine blueprint, her own special design. He asks what the cost is and Zariel says that all she requires is ‘a valuable treasure’. Thinking that she means gold or a rare artefact, he agrees to the transaction, expecting her to return with the blueprint when he has either acquired enough gold or found a valuable item. But several days later he notices Karlach has gone missing and their friend Fytz hasn’t seen her either. Zariel returns to him and hands him the blueprint, thanking him for Karlach as she’s ‘exactly what I needed’. Realising that the ‘treasure’ was Karlach, he tries to walk back on the deal but Zariel refuses saying ‘they both got what they wanted’.

(Remember Wyll’s story about the Farmer who made a deal with a Devil for a bottomless coinpurse).

Karlach will realise that she did mean something to him:

Karlach: So you really did care?

Enver: Of course, I trusted you with my life.

They will decide to start their friendship anew and Enver will promise Karlach that he will find a way to fix up her engine and cool her off. (This means that if you lose Dammon via the Grove or Last Light Inn, she will have a backup, it will also open up a third upgrade in Act 3 done by Enver which will give Karlach an extra 1d6 fire damage to all attacks).

If you get to Act 3 and you are in the Lower City with Karlach and Enver in the party, you will get a special cutscene where you find an old Missing Poster with a drawing of Karlach on it, saying to give any information on her whereabouts to Enver (The poster will light up the same way that Karlach’s parents graves light up if she’s in the party and you take her to the graveyard.

If Enver and Karlach are in the party together when they meet Fytz near Sorcerous Sundries, Fytz will comment on Karlach returning and say this line:

Fytz: I can’t believe it, the whole gang is back together, life wasn’t the same without you Karlach.

Raphael:

Raphael will immediately recognise Enver if he is in the party when he first encounters you, he will say something to the effect of 'Don't you look all grown up' which will prompt a 'fuck you' from Enver and Raphael saying ‘Watch your language boy’. Enver will always be against bargaining with Raphael and will greatly approve of killing Raphael and stealing from the House of Hope. He will disapprove if you sleep with Haarlep and will break up with you if you are romancing him.

If he comes with you to the House of Hope to steal the hammer/contract, he will have a confrontation with Nubaldin and Hope will recognise him, calling him ‘little Sparrow’ and asking why he’s come back after he escaped.

If Hope is alive after Raphael is defeated, Enver will say this:

Enver: Thank you Hope, for everything

Hope: Any time little Sparrow.

After the House Of Hope, there will be a special cutscene where he's in a bad mood after the quest, stating that while he’d love to be overjoyed that Raphael is dead, he can’t. You can choose to comfort him in this cutscene by giving him a hug and he'll explain that going back to the House of Hope has dragged up a lot of bad memories and seeing Nubaldin brought up the worst ones, he will explain that the scar on his chin is from Nubaldin's abuse.

If he doesn't go to the House of Hope, he will just have a line about how glad he is that Raphael is dead and asks about Hope’s fate to which you can tell him she’s either alive or dead depending on if she survived the fight.

Party Banter & Reactions:

Enver will have various banter with the companions. With Karlach after they bury the hatchet, their banter is a friendly siblings-who-insult-each-other dynamic. If they are both in the party when entering Sorcerous Sundries they will have this dialogue:

Karlach: Wow, this place has changed a lot since the last time we were here.

Enver: The last time we were here, you got us banned for a month because you yelled at the books.

Karlach: How was I supposed to know they would explode?

In the scene with Tolna, Enver will say this line to you after she says the books are sensitive:

Enver: Don’t even think about it, I am not getting banned again.

If you make the books explode by shouting, he will disapprove.

With Astarion, he bounces off Astarion’s flirty banter quite easily with his own innuendos and after the party learns Astarion is a vampire he mentions that they might have crossed paths at one of Cazador’s banquets, Astarion will make a suggestion about drinking Enver’s blood to him, to which Enver will ask what will Astarion provide in return for such a transaction and Astarion will answer ‘oh I’m sure we can come to a suitable arrangement’.

For Gale they actually both bond over books for most of their banter, discuss magic and through Act 2 and 3 will be playing a mental game of Lanceboard, at one point Gale will lose the game and call Enver a cheater with Enver remarking that if he wants a rematch they can get a real board. If you have not romanced either Enver or Gale and Enver mentioned pursuing Gale at the Tiefling party, their banter will become slightly flirty, if Astarion is also in the party, he will make a joke about the two of them.

With Lae’zel he talks about Githyanki culture and how he finds it quite fascinating. Lae’zel will remark how she finds his ingenuity in combat impressive.

With Wyll he actually asks to hear some of his stories as the Blade of Frontiers.

With Shadowheart they discuss the theology of Shar as well as their lives in Baldur’s Gate, Shadowheart will at one point ask how old Enver is prompting this dialogue:

Shadowheart: How old are you Enver, you seem quite young to be a Lord?

Enver: I’m thirty-eight, why do you ask, do you picture Lords as stuffy old coots with grey hair waxing poetic about philosophy and politics whilst ordering the shoe-shine boy to ‘shine until I see my own reflection’.

Shadowheart: I didn’t realise we were the same age.

Enver: We are?

Shadowheart: Well I might have a few more years on you, I’ve been part of Shar’s cloister for over thirty years now.

Enver: Well you don’t look a day over twenty-five.

When Jaheira is recruited, she will call Enver ‘Lordling’ and when she and Enver are in the party they will have this dialogue:

Enver: Jaheira.

Jaheira: What Lordling?

Enver: You don’t still remember the ‘front porch incident’ do you?

Jaheira: I do.

Enver: Ah

Jaheira: I want my idol back.

Enver: And you will get it back…as soon as I remember where I left it.

Other banters would be discussing the best wine, an off-hand mention about breaking out of a jail cell with a bobby pin, if in the Underdark at the Sussurbark tree, he makes a quip to Gale about performance issues. In Reithwin at the Waning Moon, he will make this remark about Thisobold Thorm:

Enver: It looks like the result of a Spectator shagging an Ogre.

He will also have different reactions to specific dialogue interactions.

If he’s in the party and you lick the Dead Spider, he disapproves and asks if you lack common sense, if you lick it twice, he says you only have yourself to blame.

(When licking the spider and fail the Con save)

Enver: Do you lack common sense or do you frequently lick things you shouldn’t?

(If you succeed the Con save)

Enver: That’s not a fetish for you is it?

(If you lick the spider again)

Enver: You only have yourself to blame.

If he’s in the party when going to rescue Halsin, he approves of the Loviatar scene with Abdirak and will banter with Shadowheart or Astarion through the scene. He can also request to receive Loviatar’s Penance.

If you kiss Crusher’s foot and manage to get the ring he will approve and ask you if that’s a trick you learned.

In Act 3, if he’s in the party when Aylin kills Lorroakan he says killing him might not have lifted the pain like she thought it would.

If he’s in the party when going to see Dribbles you will get these dialogue lines:

Enver: I hate clowns.

(If asked to go on stage)

Enver: I will sacrifice a lot of things, my dignity is not one of them.

(If you ask him again)

Enver: If the clown dies, that’s on you.

If Akabi turns you into a wheel of cheese by telling him to ‘do your worst’ there will be a short cutscene of Enver laughing hysterically at your misfortune.

If he is in the party when you discover the explosive teddy bears, Enver will remark that he knows a man who did something similar with a Jack-in-a-box.

If you are a Dark Urge and kill Isobel while he’s in the party, like the other companions he will express disappointment in you killing her. If you tell him you’ve become the Slayer, he will be impressed that you’ve gained such a power but says you must use it responsibly.

If Enver is in the party in Act 3 and you go to Flymm’s Cobblers, a cutscene will occur. His father Dravo will be happy to see him and his mother Sally will be polite but emotionally distant. Enver’s original Baldurian accent will slip through and he will say that he’s just stopping by to say hello. If you are romancing Enver, his father will remark asking who this ‘Handsome Lad/Pretty Lass/Fetching Person’ is, you can choose to answer or stay silent. If you choose to stay silent Enver will introduce you as his partner. At the word partner, Sally will chime in asking:

“Are we finally going to get some grandchildren Dravo?”

To which Enver will say that you all have to leave. Afterwards you can talk to him about his parents and he will say that they’re trying to make an effort, but he still has yet to forgive them for selling him. You can ask him about the grandchildren line and he will say that they have asked him that question three times before and he dodges it every time.

How Enver Will Affect Quests:

Enver will be able to affect certain quests if he is recruited to the party and is present during some quests. If both him and Karlach are recruited, he will be able to administer a third upgrade to Karlach’s heart in Act 3 that will boost her damage output. He says that this upgrade won’t be able to cure her but it will allow her engine to use the energy it produces more efficiently. He will also explain to her that the engine is degrading faster because it’s not in Avernus, if she wants to live, she will have to return as Dammon said. He will also say that if he had access to his original blueprint and an Infernal Forge, he would be able to create her a new heart that would allow her to return to Faerûn permanently.

Enver will also be able to affect the Stone Lord quest to find Minsc. When Jaheira suggests talking to Nine-Finger Keene, you can talk to Enver as he has history with the Guild and he will say that he knows her and can get them access. If he is in the party, you will be able to bypass any checks at the door to the Guild by letting Enver take the lead. He will talk to Tusgront on the door and the party will notice his accent has changed from his posh demeanour to a strong northern accent. After you are granted access to the guild, you can ask him what the accent is all about and he will explain that sometimes his ‘real’ accent will slip out. This will also happen if he is in the party when you meet his parents in Flymm’s Cobblers and when talking to Nine-Fingers Keene.

If Enver is a part of the Auntie Ethel quests, he will have strong opinions on her desire to want children to create her coven. When she shows off her belly, Enver will call her a monster for eating a child, to which she will say:

“Oh shut up you petulant little brat.”

His romance will be affected if you let Auntie Ethel keep Vanra and kill her mother in return for gold. If you take this route he will break up with you.

Romance:

As a Companion, Enver will be fully romanceable and will have three major cutscenes, plus two minor ones that will contribute to his romance.

After you recruit Enver, you will get night time cutscene after you go to sleep where you wake up and see him in the middle of a nightmare, you can wake him up and ask him what's wrong and he will tell you it's just a nightmare, if you pass a passive Insight check, you can press him on the matter and he will tell you that he was dreaming of the House of Hope, if you ask him what it is, he will tell you that it was an awful place and he doesn't want to discuss it further. This is the first minor cutscene and will happen before you meet Raphael.

Act 1 Romance Scene: Stargazing.

With enough approval, either before or during the Tiefling party. Enver will invite you to go stargazing. Down by the river's edge, you'll find him looking up at the stars and you two will have a conversation about the constellations (Star Druids will get special dialogue options for this as you'll know the constellations already). You have to pass two low DC History checks to see if you recognise the constellations in the sky. (If you are Lae'zel, you can point out where you roughly think your Creche is). You can ask him how he knows about stars and he says he spent a lot of nights stargazing on the roof of the Elfsong Tavern. At this point you can make a comment about him having eyes like starlight and have the option to kiss him (Unless you're Karlach, you'll get a half-hearted lean in then pull away because you can't touch anyone, to which he will say he wanted to kiss you too and one day he will). After the kiss you'll both return to camp to sleep and have a conversation the next morning about stargazing again sometime.

If you choose not to pursue him or Gale or Shadowheart at the party, he will have one of these two lines:

Enver: Enjoy the night, I might go share a bottle of wine with Shadowheart later.

Enver: Enjoy the night, I might see about spending some time with Gale later on.

After the party, depending on which line was delivered, he will say one of these two lines the next day at camp:

(So did you talk to Shadowheart):

Enver: I did, though we might have had a bit too much wine because…well it was a fun night is all I’ll say.

(So did you talk to Gale):

Enver: I did, we had a very…intimate moment together in the Weave, one I think he’s inclined to experience again.

In Act 2, when you speak to Raphael again in Last Light Inn, you'll get a second minor cutscene at camp where Enver is visibly angry about the offer to Mol and if you ask why, he'll explain that his parents sold him as a child to Raphael. He'll explain the story that his parents were in debt and sold him to clear their debts thinking he was being sold to a Warlock who would teach him magic, instead he was taken to the House of Hope where he lived in the prisons for ten years until he managed to escape. This is also where he will bring up Bane by way of saying that maybe if he hadn’t been sold to a Devil as a child, he might have found a different God to worship instead of Bane, and mention that for several years he was part of a secret Banite cloister before he was ousted by a rival who hated that he had Bane’s favour and was close to becoming Bane’s Chosen, this is where you can start encouraging him or discouraging him from Bane worship. If you encourage him, you can tell him that maybe he can gain Bane’s favour again. You can discourage him by saying that Bane can’t be a God worth worshipping if he can’t see Enver’s true strength.

Act 2 Romance Scene: Archery

After your first visit to Moonrise Towers, Enver will ask you to meet him after everyone has gone to sleep. When you take the long rest, you'll find him shooting 3 training dummies with a longbow. You'll have a discussion about the Absolute and shoot the targets (no rolls) just options to shoot the left, middle, or right dummy. Then he will mention that you are quite something and he can't remember the last time he felt this strongly about someone. You will have an option to shoot one of the dummies which has a heart drawn on it with a dialogue line about how he captured your heart when you met. He'll ask if you want to consider something more serious, to which you can say yes or no to, if you say yes, you'll get the option to sleep with him (in a fairly spicy cutscene) and if no he'll accept your rejection and say he's going to stay and practice some more, you'll walk away and he'll shoot the heart on the dummy with an arrow, the heart will split open and sand will spill from the dummy.

If you agree to a relationship, you will have the option to kiss him, break up, and ask how the relationship is. Like other companions, Enver will have four kiss options: one where he kisses your cheek and pulls you into a hug, a passionate kiss where he will pick you up and spin you around, a passionate kiss where after, as you walk away he will kiss your hand before letting it go, and one where he will kiss you on the lips and then on the neck several times.

Act 3 Romance Scene: The Elfsong

When you reach the Lower City, Enver will tell you he's planned a special evening for you both on the roof of the Elfsong Tavern. You'll agree to meet him there after everyone has gone to sleep. When you go to sleep, a cutscene will begin with you arriving at the roof of the Elfsong where Enver is sitting on a blanket with a bottle of wine and two goblets. He tells you how the roof of the Elfsong is his favourite spot. He'll open up a little more and reveal that when he escaped the House of Hope, he was homeless, he couldn't return to his parents because he hated them for selling him in the first place, so he turned to pickpocketing coins and scrap and sleeping on the roof of the Elfsong to get by until he was recruited by the Guild to become their personal weaponsmith and eventually found the Banite Cloister. Depending on if you've encouraged or discouraged his Banite worship, he will say two different things, he'll either say that he used to think Bane was his path to glory but he was wrong because his actions have spoken for themselves throughout this whole ordeal or he'd say that with Bane's blessing he will rule the city and you can rule beside him. He will reveal a Banite pendant and one of two things will happen. If you have discouraged him from worshipping Bane, he will throw the pendant away but if you have encouraged him, he will give the pendant to you. Depending on the action, you'll kiss him and sleep with him on the roof of the Elfsong (Again fairly spicy). Afterwards there'll be a cutscene where you'll both be lying on the blanket after the deed and he'll look at you and tell you he loves you.

If he’s in the party for the final fight against the Netherbrain, he will have two last kiss options. One where he will kiss your hand and then press his forehead to yours and one where he will lift you into his arms and kiss you passionately and then set you down.

Dryad’s Love Test:

You will be able to do the Love Test with Enver. The Dryad will ask these three questions:

What is Enver’s biggest regret?

Correct Answer: Betraying Karlach’s trust

When is Enver happiest?

Correct Answers: In his workshop or stargazing

What does Enver desire most of all?

Correct Answer: A real family

If you answer with these correct answers he will say that you can ‘see him for who he truly is’.

Ending Romance: A Duke, A Banite, An Adventurer, Or Avernus

So several things will happen with his romance at the end of the game. If you romance Enver and go to Avernus with Karlach, he will go with you stating that he couldn't protect Karlach from Zariel the first time but this time he will, if Wyll is the Blade of Avernus as well, the four of you will go to Avernus together and run off into the wasteland. All four of you will walk out of the portal at the epilogue together and you can talk to him about finding the forge to fix Karlach's heart. (This will also happen if you're a Wyll Origin and become the Blade of Avernus).

If you don't go to Avernus with Karlach and she goes with Wyll, or she dies on the docks, or becomes a mindflayer, you will wake up in the Elfsong room with Enver. If he's still a Banite, he will mention how the city being rebuilt is the perfect opportunity for him to become Archduke of Baldur's Gate and let Bane's Chosen truly reign over the city, no tadpoles required, this will open up an option to stay with him in the city and help him take over or continue your adventures across the sword coast. If you leave Baldur’s Gate he will leave the door open for you to return, saying that hopefully when you do, he’ll be ruling the city.

If he's not a Banite, he will mention that Ravenguard has made him a Duke and he plans to stay in the city and help rebuild, you will have the option to stay in Baldur's Gate with him or say you're going to continue your adventures across the sword coast. If you pick the latter, he will wish you good luck and to not have too much fun without him, this will open an option for him to come with you, stating that it wouldn't be an adventure without him. He will agree and will give up his title for you. If you are an Origin companion like Gale, Karlach, Lae'zel or Astarion, he will choose to stay with you whatever decision you make such as Avernus, Waterdeep, the Underdark or leaving Faerûn.

Breaking Up:

Enver will break up with you if you do one of these things:

- Sleep with Mizora
- Sleep with Haarlep (Even if he is not in the party as the tadpole will reveal this information to him)
- Take up Auntie Ethel's offer to kill Vanra's mother and let her keep Vanra (If you have also let her keep Mayrina’s child, he will call you a monster because you gave her two children)

The Halsin Romance:

Enver will be fine with you sleeping with Halsin, saying this line when you tell him that Halsin is interested:

Enver: Halsin? I won’t lie, I've also thought about going for a ride on that mighty Oak. But if we are to do this, it has to be a truly equal arrangement.

He will stipulate that it needs to be fully equal between all three of you. If both Enver and Halsin are in your party together they will have party dialogue implying they slept together without you and are trying to plan a special evening for the three of you, Halsin will make a joke about being a bear and Enver will say something along the lines of: "I'm still picking fur out of my teeth."

So Who Will Take Gortash's Place As Villain?

All this is to suggest that Enver is not the villain of Baldur's Gate 3 and someone else is in his place. As Bane is part of the Dead Three and one of the three Gods behind the Absolute, Enver will be linked to the new villain just as the Dark Urge is linked to Orin and Bhaal. The villain would be a fellow Banite worshiper by the name of Lord Killian Halligan. A Noble High Elf Bladesinger Wizard.

Villain Concept

Concept for Killian Halligan, the new Chosen of Bane (Face preset is Edric A Head From Mantis’ Face Preset Collection on Nexus, Hair is from PK Hair Collection by PseudoKociara on Nexus, outfit is Midnight Rose from badwitch69 dyed in the Gortash Dye from Basket of Equipment).

Killian Halligan would be described by the narrator as:

Narrator: A handsome young Elven man with striking eyes.

Killian and Enver were in the same cloister, one could say they were friends once. But Killian, being of high status and extremely self-absorbed with his power and privilege, was furious that Enver was slowly gaining Bane’s favour in the cloister and was hearing rumours amongst the followers that Bane was going to name Enver his Chosen. Determined to not be usurped by a ‘pathetic little runt’ Killian used his cunning and wits to disgrace Enver by making claims that Enver was secretly a worshipper of Mystra, a Goddess that Bane considers an enemy as he covets her power over the Weave, even going as so far as to plant items holy to Mystra on his person as well as forged letters to a Cleric of Mystra. Enver was cast out by the cloister and Bane himself also distanced his own divinity from Enver, ignoring any attempt to reach him through worship. This left Enver having to start from the bottom again to try and gain favours with the Council and other nobles to gain his Lordship. Because of his work as an arms dealer with the guild, he eventually made contact with Barcus Wroot and later on Zanner Toobin of the Gondian Clan. The Gondians, being a proud and respected Artificer clan in the city, agreed to give Enver workshop space and collaborative efforts so that he could finally use the Infernal Engine blueprint from Zariel and craft his first Steel Watch Guardian described by him as a ‘Warforged Defender’. Eventually the first Steel Watch prototype was crafted, but it does not talk. All the while Enver is working to create the Steel Watch, Killian is conspiring with the Dark Urge to steal Mephistopheles Crown to place on the Elderbrain, create the Cult of the Absolute, kidnap Ravenguard and eventually use his influence and the Cult’s power to become Archduke of Baldur’s Gate.

When the Dream Guardian leaves the prism they will say this about Killian:

Dream Guardian: The Elf I know, Lord Killian Halligan, a worshipper of Bane and Noble of considerable reputation dealing in secrets and powerful magic.

In Last Light where you meet Florrick, she will mention Lord Halligan’s Steel Watchers which will prompt this response from Enver:

Enver: Lord Halligan’s Steel Watchers? That man knows nothing about designing Constructs.

When you enter Rivington and get to the checkpoint, if Enver is in the party, he will see the Steel Watch guardian and say this:

Enver: That’s my Construct design, that bastard, he’s passing my defence strategy off as his original idea!

After passing into Wyrm’s Rock, a Steel Watcher will start talking to the party and invite you to Killian’s Coronation. If Enver is in the party when you enter the throne room this dialogue will occur:

"Dearest Patriars, please allow me but a moment of patience, I must greet a most honoured guest. Well if it isn't my old friend Enver Gortash...you look tired Enver."

Narrator: You see beneath Enver's false smile that he's seething with rage, that should be him as Archduke.

If Dark Urge is the player character, Killian will say this line:

“Dearest Patriars, please allow me but a moment of patience, I must greet a most honoured guest. My most trusted assassin, I see you’ve returned to enact your bloody vengeance. Orin told me she had humiliated you in Bhaal’s eyes, but I know better than to trust her words, it’s good to see you my dear friend.”

During the coronation cutscene, Killian will request that you take Orin’s Netherstone and bring it to him, if you do so he will reward you for your efforts with the opportunity to help him claim the Netherbrain in the name of Bane. It is not an alliance where you will rule as equals, but a chance for him to gain your loyalty to him. Enver will consider this an opportunity for him to usurp Killian’s position as Chosen of Bane if he worships Bane again and will suggest that you ‘play along for now’.

In order to become the Chosen of Bane, Enver will have to take Killian’s Netherstone, rescue Duke Ravenguard and betray the Gondians by oppressing them and letting Wulbren take over their clan with the Ironhand Gnomes. Once Killian is dead, instead of the player character picking up the stone, a cut scene will happen where Enver will take the stone from Killian’s corpse and hold it in his hand, he will hear the voice of Bane declare him Chosen and tell him that his new task is to take over Baldur’s Gate “With or without the Absolute.” This opens you to be able to either claim the brain or defeat the brain and give him the Banite ending of planning a coup to become Archduke while the city rebuilds. He will also be rewarded with the Avatar of Tyranny, a once-per-day ability that will grant him thirty temporary hit points, increase him in size in a similar way to Giant’s Rage and give him the Fist of Bane, a once-per-turn action that deals 5d8 force damage and knocks an enemy back 30 feet.

If you have discouraged Enver from worshipping Bane, he will need to take Killian’s Netherstone, rescue Duke Ravenguard and free the Gondians in order to be granted the title of Duke Gortash.

Changes To The Iron Throne:

The Iron Throne will still be a timed event but with some changes. Enver will say that the Iron Throne is the most likely place that Ravenguard and the Gondian prisoners will be and that he knows how to get there. He will explain that he found the location of the Iron Throne and constructed a small submersible to be able to take frequent trips to the location so he could raid for materials. He used his old cargo warehouse Flymm’s Cargo where he used to smuggle weapons out of Baldur’s Gate to keep the submersible. Going to the Water Queen’s House by the Steel Watch Foundry and starting Avenge the Drowned with Enver in the party, will prompt him to say that no one should have been piloting his submersible. Under the warehouse he will see his old submersible has been scrapped and a brand new one has been made that is larger and made to transport prisoners. When taking the sub to the Iron Throne, there will not be a cutscene alerting Killian until you are inside the Iron Throne itself. When the whole party has descended down the ladder, a cutscene will occur where the entire party is spotted by a Scrying Eye. A projection of Killian will appear chastising you for entering the Iron Throne without his permission and that the punishment for such disloyalty is death as the Iron Throne will be rigged to explode. If Enver is in the party, Killian will say this:

Killian: I am disappointed in you Enver…you always were weak in the eyes of Bane.

Much like in the original quest, you will have to get Ravenguard, Omeluum and the Gondians out with Mizora either helping or hindering you. When everyone is safely on the submersible, it will be piloted away and the Iron Throne will explode. When Ulder Ravenguard is under the protection of the Emperor, he will have a cut scene with Enver, thanking him for rescuing him and for looking out for Wyll.

Ravenguard: I thank you Lord Gortash, without your help not only would I be a slave to the Absolute, but I would be a thrall in Lord Halligan’s plot to destroy this city. And it seems you have looked out for my son as well on the journey back here, I commend you. If you can fully destabilise Lord Halligan’s hold on this city, I will do more than legitimise your Lordship, I will grant you the title of Duke Gortash and give you a seat on the Council.

Destroying The Steel Watch Foundry:

The Banite Cloister has now moved its entire operation into the Steel Watch Foundry and is forcing the Gondians to keep making the Steel Watchers as well as weapons for the Cult of the Absolute. Wulbren will hand you the Runepowder Bomb and ask you to blow up the Foundry, if Enver is on a Banite path and in the party he will make Wulbren an offer, he will let Wulbren take over the Gondian clan in exchange for the bomb to be used for other means. Wulbren will only agree if Enver is a Banite. You can either blow up the Foundry which will in turn blow up the cloister as well, freeing the Gondians from oppression or Enver can use the bomb to convince the Banites to accept him as their leader. If he succeeds in being accepted by the Banites, the Banites and Gondians will all leave the foundry, skipping the combat, and Wulbren will be outside with the Ironhands. Enver will then tell Wulbren that the Gondians are his to do with as he wished as this is now a hostile takeover. Wulbren will produce a dagger and kill Zanner Toobin and declare the Gondians extinct and that only the Ironhand Clan exists. He will then exile Barcus from Baldur’s Gate.

Boss Fight:

Once Ravenguard is safe and Enver has either liberated the Gondians or become the new leader of the Banite cloister, it will be time for him to confront Killian. At the top of Wyrm’s Rock a cutscene will occur where Killian will be waiting for the party, he will be furious and these dialogues will occur if Enver is in the party:

Killian: You just couldn’t leave well enough alone, I gave you an opportunity to bow to me and you chose to ally with a man whose greatest achievement was not dying on the street.

(If Enver is Banite leader):

Enver: My greatest achievement will be taking back what should have been mine from the start, Bane’s favour was always mine to claim and you just couldn’t handle it, like the child who hates not being the favourite.

(If Enver liberated the Gondians):

Enver: My greatest achievement will be becoming the saviour of Baldur’s Gate, I will be a hero worthy of the titles granted to me and you will be nothing, remembered only as a jealous Lordling who had to lie and cheat his way to the top.

Killian: Fitting words for your headstone I think. But now it is time to die like the dog you are, Lord Bane I beseech you, grant me your power and let me strangle the life out of these parasites. Leave no ant standing while they are crushed under my fist.

Killian will then call upon his Bladesinging power and the sound will ring out across the room as he will then transform into the Avatar of Tyranny and say these words:

Killian: Now…face the wrath of the Hand of Bane.

The boss fight will occur and when he is defeated another cutscene will occur where his power is lost and he will drop to his knees. If Enver is in the party, he will pick up Killian’s unique sword: ‘Justice’ and drive it through his chest, otherwise your character will pick up the sword and kill Killian.

Enver & Dark Urge:

If you picked Dark Urge as your character, you will have unique interactions with Enver. If you tell him about your desires to maim and kill he will say this:

Enver: Your affliction sounds like more than just intrusive thoughts, I’d be careful, if your hand starts twitching at the idea of stabbing me in the throat, at least have the courtesy to tell me before you make the attempt.

If you kill Alfira/Quill and didn’t hide her body or wash the blood off yourself, he will say this:

Enver: What did she do to you to deserve such a slaughter, remind me not to get on your bad side.

If Dark Urge is romancing Enver and refuses to kill Isobel, Sceleritas Fell will tell you that Bhaal demands Enver die in Isobel’s place, which you can either do or resist. If you kill Enver and Karlach is in the party, this will lock you out of her third heart upgrade. If you resist and wake him up, he will notice something is wrong immediately, if you try to resist your urges through being tied up, he will encourage you to resist as best you can. If you try to bite him, he will threaten to kick you and if you try to bite him again, he will kick you for real and tell you to pull yourself together. Afterwards he will sit with you and say that you handled it very well even if you did try to eat him. You can make a comment that your shin hurts and he will say that he warned you. If you have been discouraging Enver from worshipping Bane and you refuse Bhaal’s offer after defeating Orin, he will say he’s proud of you and that neither of you need Gods to be strong. If you accept Bhaal’s offer to become his Chosen and Enver has become the Chosen of Bane, he will say that the Dark Lord blesses you both and that together you can make the world yours to dominate. He will be disappointed in you if you discouraged him from worshipping Bane but chose to accept Bhaal.

If Enver is in your party for the Netherbrain fight and you claim the brain for Bhaal, you will have the option to kill him by giving him a kiss and then pushing him off the brain where he will fall to his death. If he is the Chosen of Bane at this point, he will not fall to his death, he will instead transform into the Avatar of Tyranny before hitting the ground. He will then say this line:

Enver: The Edict of Bane will not bow before the Murder Lord, mark my words, the next time we meet each other, you will die by my hand.

When it’s discovered that you are a Bhaalspawn, Enver will mention that you must have been the ‘business partner’ mentioned in Killian’s letters that he intercepted.
