Summary
Francis Bonnefoy is used to being watched — admired by all, envied by most, and critically misjudged.
What he is less accustomed to is being studied.
Arthur Kirkland arrives with a single purpose: observe, assess, and when able, eliminate. He expects arrogance and carelessness, a swift job. And yet instead, he finds a man who listens too closely, speaks too precisely, and knows exactly how to get under his skin .
Their first conversation is polite. Their second is calculated. By the third, both men are already lying — not about who they are, but about how much they want to stay.
Flirtation blurs into interrogation and intimacy becomes a form of control, Arthur begins to lose the distance that once kept him safe. Francis, in turn, discovers an unfamiliar hesitation: the uneasy pull of concern, the dangerous urge to protect what he has already begun to ruin. Not because either must, but because neither man is ready to see the fallout. -
