(OUTDATED) Dark Meta Knight and the Forgotten Land: Prologue

Summary:

Have you ever wondered "what would happen if Dark Meta Knight got pulled into the Forgotten Land alongside everyone else?"
Yes?
Then this is the series for you!
(NOTE THAT THIS PROLOGUE HAS A REWRITE THAT IS MUCH BETTER.)

Notes:

This is my first time posting on AO3!
Dark Meta Knight doesn't actually make it to the Forgotten Land in this part, so please be patient as I work on both the written form and the comic form (on Tumblr: loneanon-datfl)
Note: I reformatted it slightly to match with Chapter 1.
Note 2: Updated Dark's pronouns because they were incorrect.
Note 3: THIS IS OUTDATED! If you still want to read this one, you can, but please do read the updated version, as this one is non-canon.
Please enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It just didn’t make sense.

Sure, Meta Knight had always hid himself away from Dark at any chance he got, but this? This was different.

Dark hadn’t seen Meta Knight for a whole week now, and, according to Shadow, the one and only Kirby was missing too.

Dark Meta Knight wandered through the halls of Moonlight Mansion, their home, thinking.

“Where could they possibly be? It has been nearly a week by now…”

Dark Meta Knight stopped at a balcony. Resting their hands on the railing and sighing, looking up at the moon above.

Dark did not want to call him. However with Magolor’s close connection to everyone in Dream Land, he seemed like the safest bet.

With nothing better to do with their time, Dark used their mirror magic to conjure a shard. The shard was an opaque, gray-blue colour, and did not reflect anything. Exactly what they needed.

He tapped the shard, frustrated that he had to resort to relying on someone else. He was a Mirror Worlder! He was meant to be completely independent!

A faint image of Magolor appeared on the shard, a placeholder while the Lor Starcutter received Dark’s call. Dark Meta Knight did not use a phone, they found Susie too irritating to ask her for one.

Magolor was dead-set on having contact with everyone after the Star Allies situation was over, and so he made sure the Lor could pick up signals from Dark Meta Knight’s magic.

This wasn’t the first time this function was being used, Magolor called Dark Meta Knight often to inform them of meetings that Kirby had made for the Star Allies. However Dark had never called Magolor.

“Come on…” Dark thought, “Pick up you stupid egg!”

Dark gripped the railing tight with their right hand, “You are the only one who could possibly know something!”

--------------------
Magolor was hoping to have a fairly normal evening. Marx decided to hang out in Another Dimension, so he had the Lor to himself!

This fairly normal evening was interrupted by a call, blaring across the main screen of the Lor.

Magolor rushed to his desk as fast as he could, not wanting to keep whoever it was waiting-

It was Dark Meta Knight. Magolor hesitated for a moment, blinking hard.

His ear tilted as he picked up the call, “Dark Meta Knight? Why are you calling me?”

Magolor watched Dark Meta Knight use his magic to levitate the shard, allowing Magolor to get a better view of where he was. Dark Meta Knight ran his hand along a balcony of Moonlight Mansion.

“Have my counterpart and Kirby left the dimension with you?” Dark Meta Knight asked, his back turned to Magolor.

Calling Dark was always weird, he didn’t hold the shard like a phone, he usually just had it trail behind him as he did something else, leaving his face turned away from Magolor unless he got serious.

“N-no? Magolor blurted, confused, “Are they not on Popstar?”

“Seems like it. Unless Kirby is hiding from Shadow, and Meta Knight has figured out how to block me from sensing him.”

Magolor could swear that there was some form of concern in Dark’s usually angry voice.

“Magolor,” Dark’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts, “I am going to head to Dream Land. I need you to stay on the line with me if something goes wrong.”

Magolor perked up, determination in his voice, “Alright, tell me if I need to step in.”

Magolor watched the screen closely as Dark navigated the Mirror World, it was always interesting watching him navigate the maze. He knew his way around when even Shadow Kirby got lost.

Magolor watched as Dark Meta Knight left the Mirror World. It was still astonishing every time he saw the Dimensional Mirror, after all, it’s not every day you get to see a legendary artifact! (Unless you’re Meta Knight with Galaxia, or Dark Meta Knight with the Dimensional Mirror. Then it becomes normal.)

--------------------
“What in the Mirror?-” Dark Meta Knight stared up in horror at the giant star shaped portal as it crackled with power and magic.

Dark Meta Knight felt their entire body shake. The clouds beneath them didn’t provide much to stop them from being sucked into the portal overhead. They panicked, dropping the shard.

Desperately, he spread his wings as wide as they could go, reaching for the shard beneath him. Rocks narrowly missed hitting his wings.

--------------------
“Dark Meta Knight?” Magolor tensed up as the screen cut to static. No video, no audio, nothing. The moment he left the Mirror World it had all just… stopped.

“What’s going on?” He called into nothing, all he could do was hope that Dark Meta Knight wasn’t dead.

The video and audio came back for a brief moment, “Dream Land-” Dark Meta Knight began, the audio bugged, “Not safe!” He finished. Dark Meta Knight looked afraid.

Static again. Dark Meta Knight must’ve lost hold of the shard.

“Giant portal!” Dark Meta Knight was getting thrown around by what appeared to be strong winds.

Static. Something was happening out there- if that wasn’t obvious from Dark’s panic.

“Tell Shadow not to leave mirror!” He was further away now, using magic to connect to the shard.

And then there was nothing. Those were Dark Meta Knight’s final words as he lost contact with the shard.

Magolor stared up at the static on the Lor’s screen. His hand fell to his side as his ears flattened. He felt so useless, there was nothing he could do to help anyone…

Except for doing what Dark asked of him.

--------------------
Dark Meta Knight felt their magic fade from their fingertips. Panic filled them to the brim.

He didn’t notice the rock approaching his wing at high speed until it was far too late.

CRACK-

White hot pain. That’s all that he remembers before everything went black.

The crack in their wing looked like broken glass, not to mention the spike at the top having broken as well.

Dark Meta Knight floated through the portal, unconscious.

A blue-green coloured energy began to swirl around them. Connecting to them.

Notes:

I really hope I adapted this well. There are later scenes that I know will NOT translate well to writing, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there!
I only made this because someone asked, but I'm very happy with how it came out, even if I could've done better. (I have no idea how to properly format on AO3 and it is driving me nuts.) (I STILL DONT KNOW AND I WILL NOT LEARN.)
(I learned. I did learn. The updated prologue is formatted.)
