Summary
The second their eyes met, the bright green now muted and sharper all the same, ten years felt like nothing. An entire library of stone-etched memories burned to the ground in an instant. Satoru could no longer remember what he had for breakfast that morning, or any of the over 3650 days before, as he had grown accustomed to.
He couldn't even remember who set this welcome party up for Megumi, or even if he got a text from Megumi himself saying that he was coming back. Coming home.
“Satoru.”
Megumi's voice, deeper and filled with gravel, breaks through the haze and makes him feel crash-landed. He didn't realize he was breathing so hard. Or at all.
“Megumi.” It's all he can say, uncaring of how their friends are awkwardly keeping their own conversations going and trying not to eavesdrop. Well, besides Nobora and Shoko, who if he were to look at right now would be staring holes in the both of them.
Megumi is a phantom, a blur of his younger self, his father, and the new man before him. Broad and a little taller, forehead to Satoru’s nose by now. His hair is cut short and faded at the sides and back, but the length up top is still wild like it's always been, was, ages ago. Lifetimes ago.
