Summary
Suddenly, the familiar and normal warmth of his home feels off. The hallway leading to the rest of his apartment is short, but it looks long and nearly winding at that moment. The floor looks clean, shining. Freshly mopped.
It's so quiet while he stands in the doorway that his ears ring. His hand is cramping from the way he's clutching his keys. Fear. He can't remember the last time he was scared to walk down a dimly lit hallway, especially in his own home.
Fear was always a challenge for him, but now it's a suffocating fist around his lungs.
He sets the keys down, body going rigid at how loud they clack against the table in the vacuum of quiet.
It's only seven steps from the hallway to his spacious living room but he makes it in fourteen with timid, shuffling steps, pausing after each one to listen for any movement.
Someone has been in his home, today, while he was at work and maybe other times. He has no way of knowing. He should call the police, but tell them what? That his house is cleaner than he left it? No, that'd be admitting he was scared. Which he wasn't.
He very much was.
