Outside is Loud, but your Voice is Quiet

Summary:

Demon Giyu Tomioka is overwhelmed by the New Year's Eve fireworks. However, Ubuyashiki Kagaya is always there to comfort his children.

Work Text:

Ubuyashiki Kagaya sat in his office, working silently on some paperwork. Distantly, the sound of fireworks popped as the civilians of Tokyo celebrated the coming New Years. Amane, as well as their five young children, had gone out to see the celebration and festivities that the capital city had to offer tonight.

Kagaya decided not to go see the dazzling fireworks tonight. To the blind leader, all fireworks were to him were loud, startling noises that he couldn't identify the location of. There wasn't much point in going to see them if he couldn't actually see them. It was just another reminder of the sense of sight he had lost...

The room was quiet, save for the gentle strokes of his brush and the occasional crackle coming from outside. However, a small whine briefly made Kagaya pause in his work.

The man stilled, wondering if it was just a sound his imagination had conjured. Kagaya was quickly disproven of his theory when the whining noise came once more.

Concern filled Kagaya, as the only other person currently in the mansion was Giyu, the recently turned water pillar.

Kagaya stood up from the kotatsu he was seated at, and left his office to find the new demon.

As expected, Kagaya found Giyu curled under his futon in the room he was temporarily staying in, hiding under the heavy covers.

A small smile came onto Kagaya's face, one of concern and endearment. He was aware that demons had heightened senses compared to humans, so the fireworks out tonight must've been deafening for the small demon.

Slowly, Kagaya stepped forward until he reached the centre of the room where the futon was, and knelt down beside it.

"Giyu?"

Kagaya spoke softly to the demon, calling out his name in hopes to get his attention.

The covers shuffled slightly as Giyu moved underneath them, but the demon remained hidden beneath.

Kagaya chuckled slightly, peeling back the covers to reveal the demon, his expression softening as he took in Giyu's wide, watery eyes.

"It's alright, Giyu... No need to be afraid now, not when I'm here." He assured, lifting the shrunken demon onto his lap.

Giyu settled himself on the man's thighs, resting against his chest as he buried his face into the crook of Kagaya's armpit, eyes squeezed shut.

Kagaya let out an endeared coo, one hand resting on the small of the demon's back, and the other stroking his little head.

The demon's claws were out, holding tightly onto Kagaya black kimono. The pointed nails threaded through the fabric easily, piercing Kagaya's skin slightly and making the man wince.

"Easy, Giyu", He admonished gently. "You have quite the sharp nails there. We need to be careful, don't we?" Kagaya said, gently tilting the demon's chin up to look him in the eyes.

Giyu timid, big blues looked up at Kagaya, glistening with tears as he reluctantly pulled his claws back.

Kagaya offered a gentle smile, brushing the demon's dark bangs back from his forehead. "That's better. You did a good job, my child."

Giyu didn't seem comforted, replying with a hiccup as another firework popped outside, making Kagaya frown slightly.

"I know, Giyu, I know. Those fireworks are loud, aren't they?" Kagaya whispered in a soothing tone, holding the demon closer to his chest.

Giyu put his forehead against Kagaya's chest, a tear running down his cheek that was quickly brushed away by Kagaya's thumb.

"Don't cry now, it's alright..." Kagaya sang in a melodic voice, his lips brushing across the top of the demon's head.

Giyu seemed to be receptive to Kagaya's voice, nuzzling against him as his hiccups reduced to fussy whines.

Kagaya let out an amused huff through his nose, his thigh bouncing the demon slightly. "There we go, that's it." Kagaya hummed out.

The two stayed like that for a while, Kagaya humming and rocking the distressed demon while he remained cradled on the man's lap.

With every gentle bounce of Kagaya's thigh, the sleepier the demon got, his eyelids drooping.

Eventually, no more hiccups or whines came from the demon, his eyes shut and his head nestled into Kagaya.

The man smiled, placing the demon back onto his futon. "I know outside is loud, Giyu, but my voice will always be quiet for you."

Kagaya assured, knowing his words wouldn't reach the demon anyway.
