Mike had spent years trying to prove that he was ready to grow up. Ready to fight; ready to be in charge; ready to move on from childish things.
But here he was, only a few weeks into his first semester, feeling smaller than he had in a long time.
He didn’t know what to do. Who to talk to.
He thought of his friends, but the idea of explaining everything felt so embarrassing. He had called Will a few times since the school year started, but they were short, surface level conversations that ended before Mike could say anything real. He felt safe in their brevity.
This time, he didn’t want brief.
Mike reached for the phone, and punched in the phone number he had memorized.
