Chapter 1: Mom, I'm tired

Summary:

Will comes out.

Chapter Text

Will found himself pacing in one of the rooms of the radio station. He was nervous.

He’d never planned to tell them. Not his family. Not his friends. Sometimes he’d barely let himself think the words in his own head.

Will could replay all the things Vecna said to him

“William, you poor foolish thing. You really thought he was like you?”

Will pressed his eyes shut, but it didn’t help. The memories came whether he wanted them or not. Mike turning away, Mike hesitating, Mike choosing someone else without ever looking back.

“Can’t you see how his love is already destined for another heart?”

Will stopped pacing.

But Will needed to tell someone. If there was someone in this world who’d understand him more than anyone, it’s his mom. It had to be her. His mom would love him either way, right?

Maybe this was what he’d been refusing to admit. Maybe Mike was always going to be his “Tammy Thompson”.

Will felt foolish and dumb for ever thinking that Mike could’ve seen him that way. Mike wasn’t like him.

Mike was Normal.

Suddenly Will hears the door open behind him. He almost stopped breathing. Did he seem too nervous?

When Will turns over he sees his mom. Thank god it was her.

“Hey,” she said gently. “What are you doing here? I’ve been looking for you. The others are already packing for the mission.” His mom says with that usual soft tone he always uses for Will. Will didn’t mind it but sometimes it made him feel like he was still a dumb kid.

“I’ve been just… thinking” Will said, staring down at the floor, trying not to give too much away.

“Hey, Will. Are you alright?”

He looked up at her.

This was it.

“Actually, mom… there’s something I really need to tell you.”

Him and his mom sit on the sofa. The air in the room felt heavy and the sun was already setting so the room was getting colder. Will could already feel the stinging feeling you get before you start tearing up.

“Mom, I— You know there’s something I’ve been trying to tell you for so long.” Will said slowly like he might run out of breath if he talks too fast.

“You know you can always tell me anything. I mean anything”

His mom says and grabs his hand. The warmth of her hand gave him just enough courage.

“You know how, when I was younger, the other kids always made fun of me?” Will said. “I didn’t really understand why back then. But now that I’m older… I do.”

He swallowed.

“And some of the things they said,” he added quietly, “they were right.”

Will felt like he was about to cry, he quickly bites his tongue because boys don’t cry, boys don’t cry.

“And I don’t want you to see me any differently because I’m still me and I, I, I still like drawing and cooking dinner with you. There’s just something I’ve been hiding and I’ve tried to hide it but it just doesn’t go away and I just—”

Will stopped to take a couple breaths or he might’ve started crying right there and then.

“Will, you know I love you. I’m your mom and I will always love no matter what. No matter what. You can tell me.”

Will swallows. There’s no coming back.

“Mom, I’m gay”

Silence.

His mom’s eyes softened. And she pulled him into a hug.

“Oh, Will…” she says softly, holding him tight. “Thank you for trusting me. I love you. I love you so much and nothing can change that. You are my son. I know you. I will accept you no matter what.”

The tears have already started pouring down his face into his moms hair. They pull away from the hug and his mom gives him a big smile.

“Really? You mean all that you said?” Will says, wiping the tears off his eyes.

“Of course I do,” She says, wiping a tear off his face. “Will, I love you and I’m always going to be proud of you.”

Will felt like he had just taken a heavy rock off his back.

“Mom.” Will says quietly.

“Yes?”

“When we were talking about Vecna… and how he took me while I was unconscious… I didn’t tell you the whole thing.” His voice shook. “When I was there, Vecna… he showed me things. Terrible things. Things about how, if I don’t tell you about me, he could use my secrets against me. And I don’t want that to happen—not now that we’re so close.”

His mom looks at him with a serious face now. She takes Will’s hands to her own.

“We will win this. Soon he’s going to be gone and you don’t have to be scared anymore”

After Will has calmed down and the tears have stopped streaming down his cheeks, He stands up.

“I better go pack my backpack to go fight Vecna. One last time, right?”

His mom nods. “One last time.”
