Work Text:

He couldn't sleep. It didn't help that it was summer and sweltering hot, even at night. It also didn't help that Konnosuke was pressed against the left side of his face, way too warm and the fur stuck to his skin.

Today, he was sweating in places he didn't know a human body could sweat. Ugh, uncomfortable.

Ookurikara sighed, turning his face away to the right. There was another body - a peculiarity of having a human body - radiating heat. Not that he minded. No, he didn't.

But the question popped up in his thought: How could the other sleep like that and under blankets that is. Ookurikara had thrown his blanket to the side, the third time he rolled over after the spot grew hot, minding Konnosuke's sleeping form of course. His skin stuck to everything, the futon, the blanket, his shirt and pants. And he just wanted it off.

But Mitsutada, who had his back towards him, slept calmly. His back rising and falling with every breath he took.

Another thing about humans. Breathing. He - they all did it, it was an instinct, he was told. Hotarumaru had challenged some of the tantous, who could hold their breath under water the longest. Saniwa, Kasen and Nagasone had to pull six tantous out of the water in panic.

Later, Saniwa explained that human bodies need air.

He hadn't known their human bodies, artificially made, needed that.

He sighed again.

The dark was slowly turning into a grey hue. Soon it would be morning an they would wake up.

Not that he slept at all.

Then he saw them. It was the first time he had seen them, hadn't had really the time for it or cared for it to really look.

Mitsutada's collar had been pulled down slightly at the back, exposing his damp neck. There in the soft light, he could see them. Small dots - moles, one, two, three. He tracked the span of the skin with his eyes, from Mitsutada's hair, down and back up.

They were spread like constellations over the skin and Ookurikara was tempted to trace and connect them with his fingers. But he stayed still, the stronger feeling of not wanting to wake him won in him.

Instead he closed his eyes. Counting.

One, two, three.

If it weren’t for the clothes. Maybe there would be more, all over Mitsutada's back.

He felt heat rise to his face.

No.

No.

One, two, three. Spread all over. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Maybe a whole sky.

He jolted awake, when gentle hands squeezed his shoulder gently. Ookurikara sat up, a little too quick.

"Sorry", he heard the other say, voice soft. Fingers rubbing soothingly over his shoulder, the base of his neck. "Sorry. Just wanted to wake you. Breakfast will be ready soon."

Ookurikara blinked the sleep out of his eyes. When had he fallen asleep?

"Awake?", Mitsutada asked and couldn't really hide his smile. Ookurikara bobbed his head in a nod. Only then Mitsutada let go and stood from where he had been kneeling. "Let's go and get some breakfast."
