It had been so long since he’d been touched with that much kindness. That comforting gesture would have sent Sam into a desperate fight to escape just a few short months ago, but he felt no panic. It was a very strange feeling, and not one that he entirely understood, or was even sure he wanted. Why would he ever want to desire human intimacy again? The act of becoming close to other people only ever ended in grief, in one form or another. That was the only way it worked. Being isolated for so long had spared him from the pain that came from being connected.
