The Question

Summary:

Harua wants to ask Maki an important question.

Notes:

Pairs chosen by the randomizer wheel created by K. for three Hatsumōde dates! If you don't know, Hatsumōde is the first shrine visit of the new year in Japan. It's common to visit a shrine within the first 3 days of the new year (if possible, although in some regions as late as the 15th is common, and even later is okay). It's treated as an important time to make special and important prayers/wishes for the new year. You can also get omikuji (fortune slip) to see what your year will be like, and an omamori (protective talisman).

Because my brain is filled with shoujo romance manga, I also see Hatsumōde as an excuse to go on a date with your crush! 💖 So I hope you enjoy watching Harua try to ask Maki out! 🥰 I realized while writing this that I guess I think of Harua as a bit of tsundere. 🤭

Work Text:

Harua is restless. He’s sitting on his bed, with the door open so he can see into the hallway. Usually he prefers keeping his door closed because he values peace and quiet whenever he can get it, but if he can catch Maki after he gets out of the shower, he can ask him before he goes to bed. He’s actually been trying to ask for days, but the words keep sticking in his throat. It just feels so cheesy. But…he really wants to go with Maki, and if he doesn’t ask now he might miss his chance. They’ll be so busy tomorrow, and he’s sure they’ll just pass out when they get home at…whatever time they manage to do that. So it has to be now.

The sound of the bathroom door opening makes Harua’s heart jump. Standing up from his bed, he walks over to the desk next to his door and pretends to be looking at something on his phone. He sees Maki out of the corner of his eye and looks up from his phone, trying to seem calm when he’s actually a bundle of nerves.

“Oh, Maki, wait. I just remembered something…” he trails off, hoping Maki will understand the invitation.

Maki looks at him and nods, “Sure thing, what’s up?” and then he’s inside of Harua’s room. Wearing nothing but a towel around his waist. Harua is suddenly questioning why he thought this would be a good time to talk to Maki when he’s already so nervous.

Forcing himself to keep his eyes on Maki’s face, Harua’s mind is screaming Don’t Look Down! Don’t Look Down!” as he tries to remain focused. Of course, looking directly at that gorgeous face isn’t exactly easy either. “It’s not a big deal or anything. But I thought you might want to come with me for Hatsumōde. I’ve already arranged for a ride, so it’s fine if you want to tag along.”

The silence that follows is torture for Harua. He said it, so why isn’t Maki responding? He’s just standing there with a goofy smile forming on his lips. Or really, it’s more like a smirk. Is this funny to him? Is this cringe? Oh god, what was he thinking? This was a mistake. “I guess you have other plans already. Just thought I’d check with everyone. I'm going to bed now, so see you tomorrow.” He didn’t 'check with everyone', he only asked Maki, but the lie makes him feel less desperate. Harua turns his back on Maki, hoping that he just leaves without questioning him.

But Maki doesn’t leave. Instead, he grabs Harua from behind and hugs him close, wrapping his arms around his waist. He is once again very aware of the fact that Maki is half naked. He tries to squirm free but that only makes it worse. Maki tightens his grip, and he’s way too strong for Harua to even have a chance of getting away. “I said I’m going to bed. What are you doing? You'll catch a cold if you stay like that.” But Maki just laughs.

“Haru, of course I’ll go with you. I was already planning on it anyway. I have something really important to pray for, and I need my lucky rabbit to go with me. You better not invite anyone else.”

Harua’s cheeks turn bright red, but he doesn’t let his voice reveal the fact that he’s over the moon just from hearing Maki’s words. “Okay, fine. I don’t care either way. But…what’s this important wish you need to make?” His voice is steady, but his heart is racing. Maki’s chest feels so warm on Harua’s back, it’s almost more than he can take.

Laughing, Maki nuzzles the back of Harua’s neck before responding, “It’s a secret!” When Maki finally lets go of Harua’s waist and moves to leave the room it takes all of his willpower not to stop him. “Good night, Haru. Dream of me!” Maki winks as he goes into the hallway, and Harua quickly closes his door, letting out a deep sigh of relief.

He’s not sure how he’s supposed to sleep after that, but if he does dream, he hopes Maki makes an appearance. As he gets into bed he wonders if maybe he should pray for the courage to be honest with Maki and say what he’s actually feeling for once. Well, it doesn’t matter, as long as he gets to greet the new year with him by his side he’ll be content. For now.
