Remember me (though I have to say goodbye)

Summary:

After beating Chuck, Jack decides to remove all of Dean’s and Sam’s memories about hunting so they can have their own lives. Dean is a firefighter now and Sam now is a lawyer.
And when Cas comes back from the empty, he desperately wants Dean and Sam back. He wants his lover and friend back. But the memory erasing Jack did is impossible to undo.

Notes:

Uhm… here. Cry.

Work Text:

“Sam are you crazy?!” Dean asks and Sam shrugs. “Dean. I know you are still looking for ways to save Cas from the empty but you have to face that he’s gone. He’s dead. And we deserve a normal fucking life. I deserve to have my dream of being a lawyer and you deserve your dream of being a firefighter. Not some hunters.”

"Cas is not gone. He's gotten out of the empty before!" The older Winchester says.

"Yeah through Jack. And if you don't remember what Jack told us, he is not powerful enough to break a deal with the empty that Cas set!" The younger fights back.

Yeah the green eyed man didn't really have a comeback to that one.

"Dean. I know you miss him. But you told him that you love him. That's all you could've done. There's no way you could've fought Billie much less the empty." The taller says softly.

The older Winchester vowed to never cry in front of his brother. Sam didn't need that burden. But here he is. Crying over a stupid crush. His angel.

Sam comforts his brother, wrapping his arms around the older. God damn it why can't Dean stop crying?

Cas would want Dean to take this opportunity. He knows. The Winchester deserves a normal life. But he still can't get over that Castiel is dead in the first place.

The older didn't even know that they moved to his bedroom until Sam helped him get settled. "Fuckin' hell…" Dean sniffles, rubbing his nose and then his eyes.

Now that the older has calmed down a bit, he could really think about what Sam was saying.

They would ask Jack to remove their memories about all of the Supernatural and reset their lives basically. Remove all their traces of being criminals, everything. Start fresh. Think that their mom just died in a house fire and that John had a heart attack.

Dean can't even wrap his head around it. He could be a firefighter and Sam could be a lawyer. They both could have the will to go back to Lawrence. They could have their own beliefs instead of knowing the afterlife and Chuck.

"Fine. We'll ask Jack about it next time he visits." The older concluded. "What? Dean I'm not worried about that right now. I'm worried if you're okay."

"I'm fine, Sam."

"De—"

"I'm fine." Dean said, this time harsher even though the first time was already harsh enough.

The younger knew not to push after that so he just said, "If you need me, I'm here." Sam states before he leaves the room.

God just kill Dean now.

He hates treating his brother like that but the older had to push him away before Dean snapped.

And on top of the grief he has to think about forgetting the Supernatural. But that means forgetting about Jack because he's a Nephilim and god, Benny because he was a vampire, Castiel because he was an angel, even Crowley and Rowena!

Dean got some sleep (which was full of no dreams). Sleeping wasn't exactly his favorite thing but he rather have dreamless sleep than dreaming nightmares.

His reoccurring one recently was Cas's death. How he came up with this whole speech. How he said goodbye. How him and Dean kissed as their final goodbye. How Cas died knowing Dean loved him.

The next morning, Dean walked into the kitchen of the bunker to see Sam and Jack talking about starting a new life.

"I could do it, yeah. But you'd forget Castiel, me, Gabriel, Rowena, Crowley… anyone who is Supernatural. And it's irreversible."

"Yeah. Yeah we know." Sam states. "Dean?" Jack asks for his opinion. "Yeah. I know too. I'd just feel guilty forgetting you and Cas."

"I'm fine with it. Happy you are getting a normal life. Castiel would feel the same way." The Nephilim claims before continuing talking, "besides— I know it'll be lonely since their aren't many people you'd remember that would be still alive. So I'll let you bring any human back from the dead that you know."

"Charlie, Jo, Ellen, Ash, Bobby, hell even Bela. Anyone we can." The older Winchester says and the god turns to the younger for his picks. "Jessica Moore?"

Jack nods before saying, "Any particular age you want to go back?" Dean was about to say no but Sam quickly said, "when I was 22 and Dean was 26."

The older turned to his brother, who in reply said, "I miss California." The older chuckles humorless. "Wow. Ditching me again for Stanford?"

Sam swallows thickly. "Dean—" but the one in question cuts him off, "It's fine. You deserve it and I'll be able to visit. I get it. You need to go to university to become a lawyer."

They fell into awkward silence until Jack spoke up, "So do you want me to do it now or…"

"Bring everyone back first. With their memories of the Supernatural so we can make sure they are okay with it. Then we'll do it."

The Nephilim nods and focuses, his eyes turning a orange-yellow color before he snaps his fingers.

Everyone that made it to heaven appeared, back on earth. Charlie, Bobby, Jo, Ellen, Ash, Kevin, and most important to Sam, Jessica.

It got chaotic quick as Jack left to go drag Bela from hell. So Dean and Sam started explaining everything. After everyone was calmed down, everyone got to reunite.

Dean hugged Charlie tightly who hugged tighter. Sam gave her the biggest apology for getting her killed but the redhead forgave him.

Getting their basically dad back was amazing. Dean and Sam both got to hug him again.

Seeing Ellen, Jo, and Ash again was equally as amazing and Ellen and Bobby got to reunite as well. Jack said he could bring the roadhouse back as well which is good.

Seeing Kevin again was good and he's happy that he finally gets a normal life again and gets to be a normal school kid again.

Sam and Jessica's reunion was so happy that it made them both tear up. They promised that they'd get to make cookies again. When Sam came back to the dorm after the woman in white hunt, Jessica left him cookies that she never got to see him enjoy.

Dean wishes he could have a relationship like Sam and Jessica. But there's no hope for him. The only one he has eyes for his dead. And he's soon going to forget the angel of Thursday.

Everyone was happy but Dean was still heartbroken.

Jack finally came back with Bela and Dean immediately hugged her. Even though they were enemies, the trauma from hell wouldn't be something he wished upon his worst enemy.

Once the situation was explained to everyone and everyone was happy about it and agreed, Jack eyes glowed that orange yellow again and snapped, everyone's vision going white.

“You're "daddy's blunt instrument." And you think that hate and anger, that's... That's what drives you, that's who you are. It's not. And everyone who knows you see it.”

“You changed me, Dean.”

“Why does this sound like a goodbye?”

“Because it is.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

They shared a longing kiss and Dean tries his best to pull him out of the empty but to no avail.

Dean woke up with a start. He's had that reoccurring dream recently and he doesn't know why. Whatever— he has a job interview to go to.

He was born in Lawerence, went to Lebanon for almost a decade, and then came back. So he had to apply for a job and decided to apply for his dream job (finally) which is firefighting.

He applied at firehouse 276 and just hoped and prayed he could ace the interview.

He walks into the station and tells a firefighter that he's here for the interview and she leads him to the office. He says thanks before knocking on the door.

The interview actually went real smoothly and he could start Monday which is tomorrow! He knows he'll just be a probie but he's still real excited.

He gets back to his shitty two bedroom apartment and collapses into his bed.

He hears a knock at his bedroom door. Knowing it's his roommate, Charlie, who also moved to Lawerence but she moved from Chicago, Illinois not Lebanon like Dean, he just grumbled a, "come in."

"Hey. How'd your job interview go?" The redhead asks. "Good. I'm starting tomorrow. Yours?" The brunette asks right back.

"Good. I'm starting Wednesday." Charlie applied to be a 9-1-1 dispatcher and honestly? Knowing her, Dean knows she'll be good at it.

"Well— I guess sometimes we can get to hear each other over radio. If we take the same call at least." The Winchester states. "I guess so. Hey— what do you want for dinner? We are playing games over dinner by the way I don't care what you say."

"Pizza I guess. It's the best food to have over playing for five hours straight."

"It won't be five hours!" Charlie claims but the brunette gave her the bitch face and the redhead shut up but not without an eyeroll and defeat.

Their gaming session ended up being just over five hours.

Jack has changed heaven a lot and for the better. Now heaven is in two pieces instead of a million. The main part of heaven is where all the souls are and everyone is together and in peace.

And then the other part is where Jack and the angels roam around, doing their jobs and protecting heaven. And instead of the boring white walls now it's all garden because the angels and Jack all deserve the enrichment it provides.

All the angels are allowed to see god— Jack now and not just like two like how Chuck had it. And he actually communicated with them and added and changed things as the angels provide information.

"God—" an angel starts, walking into the throne room where Jack answers all the prayers. Jack wasn't sitting in the throne and instead, in good old childhood fashion, was sitting on the floor playing uno with a different angel.

"I told you Jack is just fine." The Nephilim states sweetly. "Jack. Sorry. So me and the angels were doing our jobs when we saw black goo coming from the main part of heaven where all the souls are."

The god snaps up immediately, knowing exactly what that is. "Where?" The angel leads him to where it was coming from which is the part of heaven that Jack built for Dean.

"Leave. Go to the garden and bring every angel you can over there. You'll be safe. Put heaven on lockdown. Inform reapers and death to hold onto the souls that are dying until further notice." The blonde immediately says to the angel who listens, running to go get all the angels she can.

The Nephilim can handle the empty's true form so it came out of the empty in it's true form which is sopping black goo with a lot of divine magic it (which is the part that makes looking at it overwhelming for 99% of the world & afterlife).

"What do you want?" Jack asks. "I'm just here to make a deal."

"Castiel already made one. I'm not dumb enough to make another." The blonde says.

"Actually— this is about him. See— purgatory is overpopulated with souls and therefore getting put in my territory. With souls like vampires and werewolves, I can't sleep. And I want sleep. I need sleep. So— you take care of the purgatory souls and I'll give you feathers back." The empty states.

"Bring Castiel back first and I'll do it." Jack states. The empty rolls its eyes but snaps and Cas falls out of the portal, still sleeping.

The Kline wasn't about to step out from getting his dad back so with a deep breath for bravery, he steps into the empty.

Fixing the empty and purgatory took a while but it was worth it because he got his dad back. When Jack got back to heaven and the empty left, Castiel, who is now awake, and Jack looked at each other for a few seconds before running into each other's arms, hugging.

"What happened?" Castiel asked. "Me and the empty made a deal. Purgatory was spilling into the empty so if I fixed it, I could get you back." Jack explains.

"I missed you so much." Cas says, kissing the top of Jack's head before hugging him again. "I missed you too, dad."

"What about Chuck?" The angel asks. "He's gone. And I'm the new god now." The Nephilim answers. "That's a big responsibility. Dean and Sam helping you with it?"

"About that…"

"What?"

"They don't remember me. Or you."

"What?"

"They wanted a normal life. So I removed their memories of the Supernatural. Including us. Sam is 22 and Dean is 26 again and they get to start over."

Castiel started crying, wiping his tears to the fact that his lover and best friend don't remember him. Jack hugs his dad who returns the hug, wishing that he could be with the Winchesters.

"I would've said no to removing their memories if I knew there was a way you'd come back to us. I'm so sorry, dad." Jack states, tearing up.

"It's okay. I would've still told them that they should live normal lives if I was alive at that time. I just wish I got to say goodbye." Cas reassures.

"That's what Dean was worried about when we were talking about it. And what I did… it's irreversible." The Nephilim states, guilty.

The two men then sit down in the throne room, playing uno to cheer up and talking more about this whole new lives thing.

Don't get Castiel wrong, he's glad that Sam and Dean are getting normal lives but once he was on earth again, he just went back to the place where Dean spread his ashes that time he died after Jack was born. The place with the windmill and all the beautiful flowers.

He sat in the field and watched the windmill turn and just thought of their memories.

Remember me, though I have to say goodbye
Remember me, don't let it make you cry
For even if I'm far away, I hold you in my heart

I sing a secret song to you each night we are apart.

Remember me, though I have to travel far
Remember me each time you hear a sad guitar
Know that I'm with you the only way that I can be
Until you're in my arms again, remember me

"Are you seriously crying over a Disney movie?" Dean asks as him and Cas sit in the Deancave.

"Shut up. It's sad." Castiel replied, wiping his tears as the song ends.

"Okay. You do you buddy." Dean found the scene sad too but would rather die than admit it.

Despite the scene, the two men couldn't help but chuckle at how Cas was crying over a kids movie.

That night when Castiel booked a motel, he watched Coco, cried at the song but this time for a different reason.

This time it's because Dean is far away even though his new life is physically only a mile away. This time it's because Dean doesn't remember. This time it's because Castiel is watching it alone & not the deancave.

All Castiel could think was, "Please remember me, Dean Winchester." Even though he knew for a fact that the human didn't.

Angels don't sleep so he just watched Coco over and over again until the sun rose, the whole night ignoring his tears streaming down his face.

It's been about a month since Dean started his job and he absolutely loves it. The fact that he gets to save people so said the loved ones don't have to go through what Dean went through when he lost his mother.

He clocks into his shift and being a probie, he was always doing some errand. He just got back from the store across from the fire station, getting some dinner for everyone.

He passed out all the ingredients to the one cooking and then started helping wash the truck and engine. Dinner was amazingly good and when they got a call, Dean wasted no time.

After the call, he came back tired as the call was tiresome. He went to the bathroom and splashed his face with water and was about to hit the bunks for the night when the captain informed him someone was at the house, asking for him.

The guy asking for him was a Caucasian man with very dark brown almost black hair, bright blue eyes, wearing a full on suit with a beige trenchcoat on top.

"How can I help you?" Dean asks kindly. "Uhm— you probably don't remember me but I'm Castiel." The man says. "Sorry I don't remember." Dean states.

"I was in your… high school. We shared English." Cas quickly made up a lie that was believable enough.

"Sorry I don't remember my high school years are very blurry." Dean chuckles. "It's okay. I just wanted to say hi and I remember you're favorite food is pie so I brought you some. I brought you cherry and apple." Cas smiles and was desperately trying not to cry.

"Apple and cherry pie are my favorites! Thank you so much."

"Of course. I hope you like them. Have a nice night." Castiel (was that his name?) says. "You too." Dean was about to leave when the blue eyed man stopped him again.

"I also met your brother, Sam, in high school. Mind telling him hi for me next time you hear from him?" Castiel asks. "Will do. Bye, Castiel."

"Bye, Dean."

The Winchester didn't know why but he wanted to watch Coco even though he hasn't watched it in a few years. So he ate the pie as he watched Coco and totally did not cry at the remember me scene.
