Summary
Across the room, between two people talking animatedly, was Mike.
He wasn’t looking at Will. Not yet. He was laughing at something someone had said, his head tilted back slightly, one hand running distractedly through his hair. It was a familiar gesture, too familiar, and it hit Will like a punch to the stomach.
He tried to look away, really. But that was precisely the moment Mike turned.
Their eyes met.
It wasn’t some grand cinematic moment. No music lowered, no crowd vanished. It was just a glance, maybe a second too long, long enough to recognize each other, to realize that yes, it was real. That it wasn’t a memory, nor a hallucination caused by alcohol.
Mike’s eyes widened slightly. Surprise, recognition, something dangerously close to relief.
Will felt his heart surge in an instant, a sharp beat that stole his breath. The heat in his cheeks returned, stronger, and the room seemed to close in around him.
That was enough.
Will dropped his gaze abruptly, as if burned. He rose from the couch, almost tripping, leaving the empty cup on the table with an ungraceful thump.
