Trickery

Summary:

Dean has a toothache, Sam tricks him into going to see Garth for it. Shenanigans occur for both of the brothers.

Aka a fic I wrote because 1. I recently had to get 5 fillings done (yeah I love my life) and I had never had a cavity before so yeah nervous as hell. I dealt with it by reading my favorite characters in similar situations and theirs not many fics on this platform about the boys going to the dentist. Plus 2. We don't nearly get enough dentist Garth action. Honestly no clue where this would take place, but probably sometime after Dean has those 17 cavities lol.

Notes:

This is technically my first finished published fic, and I wrote this at like 10:00 at night so grammar and punctuation issues may occur. I also do have issues with what characters would do and say so feel free to give me advice in that aspect.

Have fun and enjoy y'all!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Sam was frying up some pancakes at like 7:30 in the morning when Dean came into the kitchen. Yet again rubbing his jaw. Sam groaned,

“Dean again with your jaw already? It's only 7:30 in the morning.”

“Shut up Sammy, I'm fine,” Dean replied.

“Fine my ass” Sam muttered, “It's been bothering you for how long now? Like a week? We really need to get that checked out.”

Dean groaned, “seriously Sam I'm fine.”

Sam didn't believe him for one minute, watching as Dean attempted to eat his soft fluffy pancakes without wincing. He sighed to himself, realizing that he would have to fight Dean tooth and nail for this. Then he came up with the most brilliant idea, and excused himself to his room to do “research” on a new hunt.

“K nerd” Dean replied, already cracking open a beer at 8 in the morning.

Sam retreated to his room, making sure Dean wasn't nearby or stalking him for some reason before picking up his phone, and dialing Garth.

Garth picked up immediately, and Sam could hear slight crying in the background-probably from the twins as Garth began to speak.

“Well if it isn't Sam!” Garth excitedly spoke, “how ya doing!”

“I'm doing great Garth, how are you?” Sam replied.

“Well life’s good, twins are growing like weeds.”

“That's good” Sam uttered back, “Say Garth? Would you be able to help me with a problem?”

“Of course Sam! What's wrong?”

“It's Dean, he's had a sore jaw for like a week now” Sam sighed, “not sure if it's a tooth issue or an actual jaw issue. But we both know he's not going to get help until it's really bad.”

Garth got slightly more serious, “Yes Sam I agree, he's bound to get himself in real trouble with that habit.”

Sam sighed again at that. Glad that Garth agreed his brother had a bad habit about that.

“Garth? Would you be able to call him and maybe ask him for help with something?”

“Like what Sam?”

“Maybe ask him to see if we can take care of the kids? Last minute babysitter or something?”

Garth replied, “As much as I hate to lie to Dean, I feel that's the only way to get him here.”

“Thank you Garth” Sam uttered back, “hopefully this will go better than expected.”

“Agreed Sam,” sighed a slightly annoyed Garth. “I will see you soon, have a good night bud.”

“Same to you Garth,” Sam reciprocated as Garth hung up.

Sam groaned as his head hit his pillow. Seriously Dean, all the shit we've been through and you're terrified of the dentist, Sam thought. He then picked up his phone and lost track of time until Dean came barging in his room without knocking.

“What Dean?” Sam groaned, not quite annoyed at his brother.

“Garth needs our help.” Dean answered back.

“Oh?” Sam tried to show surprise, “why?”

“Babysitter cancelled and Garth really wants to take Bess on a date. He promised pie and everything!” Dean emphasized.

Great pie for Dean’s rotting teeth. Sam thought as he replied to Dean.

“Soooo? I guess we're going to Wisconsin?”

“Oh yeah” Dean replied, “pack your things. I’m dying for Bess’s incredible pie.”

“Okay Dean” Sam smiled to himself, as he began to pack his duffle.

Soon enough both the brothers were seated in the Impala, cruising towards the state of Wisconsin. With Dean still having no clue about what the actual purpose of this visit was.

Around 10hrs later, around 7:30pm the boys arrived at Garth's house.

“Cool, we got here just in time” Dean exclaimed.

“Alright” Sam replied, “shall we go in?”

Dean didn't reply as he got out of the car and headed towards the front door of the house. Sam followed him and stood on the porch as Dean knocked. The door opened almost immediately to a rather excited Garth.

“Hey guys!” Garth excitedly said, hugging Sam and then Dean-much to Dean's discomfort.

“Didn't rile up the kids too much right?” Dean sarcastically questioned.

Garth got a sad look on his face. Sam took the cue and stood in front of the door.

“Dean, that's not why you're here.” Garth muttered, a seriousness in his tone.

“Well what the hell then I am here for Garth?” Dean questioned back, anger starting to slightly bubble.

Garth sighed, “your teeth, they hurt don't they?”

Dean looked pissed, “That's what this is about!”
He fumed, “Sam, did you put this up!?”

He turned towards the door, only to be meet with his 6”4 brother blocking his only exit.

“Sorry Dean” Sam said sheepishly, “you need to get your tooth looked at, and I didn't know any other way to get you here.”

“Sam, I told you I'm fine!!” Dean almost screamed back at his brother.

Garth chimed in, “fine or not Dean, you still need to get your teeth checked twice a year…”

Dean angrily scoffed at that.

Garth sighed, “c'mon Dean, hell pie’s still on the table.”

Dean's eyes kinda lit for a second at that.

“Ugh fine.” He groaned.

Sam sighed in relief

Garth led the pair downstairs into his converted office. Dean reluctantly sat in the dental chair, while Sam leaned on the wall towards the side.

“Alright Dean-o let's get this show on the road.” Garth exclaimed, clipping a bib on Dean.

Dean grumbled.

Garth puts on a pair of gloves, hovers the overhead light on Dean's mouth, and grabs his tools.

“Kay! Open wide Dean-o” Garth instructed and Dean surprisingly complied with Garth's Demands.

Garth poked around Dean's mouth for a while, Sam observed, hoping that whatever the issue was, it wouldn't be bad.

“Alrighty Dean.” Garth said, a little serious “good news is your teeth look pretty good.”

“See Sam! My teeth are perfectly fine.” Dean interrupted Garth's train of thought.

Garth and Sam both sighed.

Garth continued. “And the bad news is you have one really bad cavity that needs a root canal…”

“What.” Dean sounded shocked.

“It happens” Garth replied, “and I know the deal with you, I'll make it as fast and as easy as possible bud.” he continued as he wheeled a tank towards Dean.

“Here we go buddy” Garth put a mask on his nose. “Breath in, let the gas do its thing.”

After a minute Dean wasn't quite asleep, but incoherent and numb enough for Garth to work without having to worry about Dean's fear.

“Sam? Are you good to stay?” Garth asked

“Yep I'm okay Garth” Sam replied.

Garth wheeled him a spare stool.

“Here sit at least” Garth said

Sam sat, pulling out his phone again and thinking about how lucky they were to have Garth.

After about an hour, Garth was finished with Dean and Dean was coming too.

“Hey bud, how ya feeling?” Garth asked

Dean grumbled.

“Well you did amazing.” Garth said, “Sam? Would you assist me in getting him to the couch?

“Of course Garth.” Sam replied. The pair lugging the drugged up Dean up the stairs and on the couch.
After Dean settled Garth waited a minute, then exclaimed,

“Alright Sammy! Your turn!”

Sam almost went white, prompting a response from Dean- who laughed and exclaimed,

“Ha, who's afraid of the dentist now? Sammy!”

Sam groaned, as Garth started to explain the importance of checkups. Sam stopped him.

“Garth I get it, just was not expecting you to insist on it.”

“Well now's the perfect time! You're here aren't ya?”

“Yeah yeah” Sam responded, as Garth led him down the stairs yet again.

Sam took a seat in the exam chair, thinking this would be just a quick little thing as Garth started the usual prep on him.

“Open wide Sam!” Garth exclaimed, and Sam complied. Garth hummed as he examined Sam’s teeth and after a moment looked up.

“Well Sam, you're doing a great job taking care of your teeth.” Garth said.

“Thanks Garth,” Sam replied. He knew he took good care of his teeth, there should be no issues.

“But” Garth continued, “I'm afraid you have 4 cavities.”

“4!?” Sam exclaimed, his heart dropping to his chest. “How!?”

“Not really your fault bud, you got some pretty deep grooves in your molars. Makes it hard to reach stuff. It happens sometimes.” Garth explained.

Sam felt himself start to panic. He never had a cavity before, god would he be able to handle whatever the hell Garth had to do to him? Garth noticed this and sighed, touching Sam's shoulder.

“It's ok Sam, we will get through it kay?”

Sam nodded, heart still pounding.

“You have a choice.” Garth started to explain. “You can do it with or without laughing gas. Although I believe you will do better with your fears and anxieties eased.” He kept his hand on Sam’s shoulder as Sam debated how he would go about this.

“Um okay, I guess the gas.” Sam decided. He did not know how he would react to the “torture” Garth had to put him through. Better safe than sorry he thought, hell it does wonders for Dean.

“Good choice Sam” Garth replied. Wheeling the nitrous tank behind the chair, and putting the nose mask over Sam’s nose.

“Good Sam, just let it do its thing.” Garth's voice carried.

Sam felt wonderful, kinda like he was walking on air. Didn't even flinch as Garth pulled a needle out.

“K Sam, may feel a couple pinches here.” Garth assured.

Sam was surprised he didn't try to resist. He wasn't afraid of needles, but after all that time with Lucifer in the cage he had a right to have an adverse reaction to them right? Either way, he didn't feel a thing as Garth worked and in what felt like only a few minutes to Sam. Garth stood up and took off the mask.

“All done Sammy, you did good buddy.”

“Mmmm thanks Garth” Sam replied, still under the effects of the gas.

“It's no problem Sam, you feeling ok?”

“Mmm” Sam replied.

Garth gave him a few minutes before guiding Sam up the stairs.

“I'm ok now Garth.” Sam insisted.

Garth didn't reply, helping Sam sit on the couch beside Dean.

“Dude what the hell happened to you?” Dean exclaimed, clearly recovered from his previous ordeal.”

“Four goddamn cavities.” Sam muttered.

“Heh!” Dean exclaimed, “perfect oral hygiene my ass! Whose the not fine one now?”

Sam groaned, rolling his eyes at his brother's antics. He had to admit, he was glad Garth insisted on checking his teeth.

The boys sat for a while, and Garth came out with two pies.

“Here ya go! Like promised!” Garth exclaimed.

“Oooh finally PIE!” Dean cheerfully exclaimed.

Sam just yawned. It was going on 10pm, and he was sure Bess and the kids were already in bed. Dean dug into the pie and Garth asked.

“Y'all wanna crash here tonight?”

“We don't wanna be a bother Garth” Sam answered.

“Aw no, after everything you two have done for me it would be nothing.”

“C'mon Sammy” Dean chimed in, “these couches are better than any cheap motel bed.”

With that the 3 men just chuckled, and the Winchester brothers settled in for the night with a good friend and healthy teeth.
