Work Text:
After another long day of work, Loona, Stolas and Blitzø returned to their tiny, one bedroom apartment. It had been a few months since the trial, since Stolas gave up everything to save Blitzø’s life, and ended up moving in with him. Now that Stolas had become another distinguished I.M.P employee, this little family unit had settled into a routine.
Loona hides in her room to recharge while Blitzø makes dinner. Stolas putters around the house, folding blankets, and picking up a few odds and ends to tidy up a bit. He also tends to his two small plants that Blitzø bought him, in an attempt to make this space feel more like his home, too. After dinner, Loona takes care of the dishes, and Blitzø changes to his sleepwear. Stolas makes himself a cup of tea and rests on the fire escape, enjoying a post dinner smoke. It’s a simple routine, and the familiarity of it is comforting.
Blitzø isn’t sure what made him wander out into the fire escape this particular evening. Maybe it was the full moon, a reminder of their previous situationship. Maybe he was just feeling a little needy and wanted more one on one time with this beautiful bird. While their routine was nice, there wasn’t really any time for just the two of them. He slid open the door to the fire escape, and just stared at Stolas for a moment, he wanted to give him an opportunity to tell him to fuck off, but also just to admire this demon he loved so very much that it made his heart ache. The way the lights of Imp City sparkled around his faceplate, the way the full moon reflected off of his red eyes, the way the smoke of his cigarette seemed to dance around his long, slender talons. Blitzø took a moment to breath in his beauty, let it fill in his damaged heart and capture this moment in his mind. Such a simple thing, but he wanted to hold onto these moments and burn them into his memory.
When Stolas didn’t object to his presence, Blitzø closed the door and sat near him on the stairs. The silence between them was comfortable. There was definitely so much they still hadn’t said, and sometimes those unsaid words made the tension between them thick, but not this time. After a few moments, Blitzø noticed the sound of soft humming coming from Stolas.
“Whatcha humming?”
Stolas stopped suddenly, his faceplate taking on a slight pinkish hue. “Oh, ah,” he ran his talons through his head feathers, “just a little lullaby I used to sing to Via.”
“It’s nice.”
“Thank you. It makes me feel a bit closer to her.”
Blitzø looked down at that. Stolas gave up so much for him. His magic, his title, his money, but most importantly, his relationship with his daughter, Octavia. Blitzø knew how much that was eating Stolas up inside. He saw the near constant sadness in his eyes, and how he stiffened whenever he hugged Loona.
Wanting to lighten the mood a bit, Blitzø got up off the stairs and went to Stolas’s side. “Do you have any songs about me?” He said putting on the flirtatious smile.
Stolas blinked a few times and then laughed a little nervously. “Maybe…” he said returning a sly smile to the imp, and looking up at the sky.
“Ya know, besides that one ya sang at Verosika’s party-“ Blitzø said before he could stop himself. He realized immediately the mistake he made. Obviously Stolas knew he was there, but why bring up such a painful memory right now when he’s trying to cheer him up?
Stolas stared down at him in shock. His white pupils almost vibrating in a panic against the sea red behind them. “I… I owe you an apology-“
“Pffft…. No, you don’t. I shouldn’t have even been there,” Blitzø said trying to lighten the mood. “Plus,” he looked out over the railing, like he’s looking at some past version of himself, “I really used to be a motherfucker. I deserved everything you sang in that song.” He turned up to Stolas and gave him a weak smile. Christ on a stick, this wasn’t how he wanted this conversation to go.
Stolas returned his smile and thought about it. Did he have any songs about Blitzø? He had sang a song after their first date at Ozzie’s, it included Blitzø but it was more about himself, and how unsatisfied he was in his life. How ironic, considering his current situation. He had sang as he got ready the morning of their last full moon renedezous, but considering how that ended, he really didn’t feel like bringing that up. Of course, Blitzø was there when he sang during the trial, though he didn’t hear the part when he admitted that he’d rather be dead than live without his imp by his side. Sweet Lucifer, would that punishment have been better than what he received? No, he mustn’t think like that. He was alive. Blitzø was alive. They were together in his home, and that’s all that mattered.
He looked down at Blitzø with a slight smile, still trying to think of something appropriate to share. Blitzø just smiled back, his tail lazily wagging behind him in contentment, his eyes filled with happiness. Stolas couldn’t help but feel like his happiness was contagious, spreading to him and healing his broken soul. He loved it when Blitzø looked at him like that.
Oh!
He looked out to the sky and started to sing:
It is expected, an oath by blood to hold the tome
And the starlight passes overhead
Fuels all the skills I've honed
I am a guardian, a watcher of these ancient rites
Yet I find myself drawn from that path
On those dazzling moonlit nights
Let me hold you, keep you close to me
I long to hear your voice
But, dearest, I know better now
I must give you this choice
I can give you everything you need
Or do you want to hear me plead?
Just look my way
Just look my way
Is there something more that I don't know
That you won't say 'til we've both grown cold?
Just say, "please stay"
Look my way
This unforgiven contract, a deed we forged for mutual gain
If that's all this was when you're not here
What is this rooted pain?
I don't care that you're of lower station
Or primed to sate my dark temptations
Why can't you understand? Let me explain!
And I'm terrified, as I cry
To make these feelings true
What's left for me and my broken heart
If I cannot have you?
Unless it's me
And no matter what in this world I could give
It's not enough
To get through the walls you've conjured up to live
Is this what you feel?
Scorned by a realm that cannot comprehend
What you are
So, I'll grant you this mercy, this bind on our souls needs to end
I will try to make amends
For making you means to an end
So, look my way
Please look my way
And if there's something more that I don't know,
I'll save us both before we grow cold.
If you'll stay, and just say, "Look my way."
He stood there a moment, as the final notes left his beak, his left arm outstretched to the moon overhead. He hadn’t meant to sing the full song. He had remembered how he felt when he received the Asmodean Crystal and the resolve he felt to change the relationship between him and Blitzø. As he sang, he got caught up in the memories, in the emotions.
He turned to look down at Blitzø. The imp looked up at him, tears welling up in his eyes and chin quivering. Stolas was taken aback. Blitzø has been keeping up such a happy go lucky attitude during this time, that seeing it break was almost world breaking. Lords, he must have hated it. Why wouldn’t he? This was from a time when they were still in their transactional relationship. Why would he want to remind this sweet, loving imp of his cruelty towards him? He turned away from Blitzø and hung his head down.
To his surprise, Blitzø hoisted himself up onto the railing and scurried over to him. He lightly cupped Stolas’s faceplate in his large claw and pulled his face up to his. His large yellow eyes glassy from the tears, but full of love, like after their dance on Sinmas. “Hey there, pretty bird, look my way,” Blitzø said softly, almost a purr, as he pulled Stolas in for a kiss. Stolas’s eyes widened in shock as his beak met Blitzø’s lips. He melted into the kiss, pulling Blitzø into a tight embrace. The kiss is soft, but runs deep, their emotions finally reaching each other.
Epilogue: Blitzø led Stolas back into the apartment and started to sing “Na na na na na na, I’m the birdie fucker-“ to Stolas’s chagrin.
