falling in love with you

Summary:

“How about… What about that show that’s nothing but emo people fighting emo people?” Kokichi said with a wide, teasing grin.

“You… you mean Soul Eater?” Shuuichi asked, and Kokichi almost immediately budding in, “Yeah! That show! It’s got all your brethren!”

“Kokichi, we’ve been over this…”

“Whaaat? Even if it’s gone out of style, you still look the part!” Kokichi explained.

Five stories from Saihara Shuuichi and Saihara Kokichi's marriage.

Notes:

This is co written by me and my good friend Naofumi (TheShieldHero). We took turns writing.

Work Text:

Kokichi and Shuuichi sat on the couch of the living room, pretty empty aside from the coffee table. They didn't say much, only laid there and cuddled in the cold.

“This show sucks ass.” Kokichi huffed, repositioning himself on Shuuichi, burying his head in his chest. “Pick a different one!” he said.

“You’re just going to fall asleep anyway, so why does it matter?” Shuuichi asked, looking down at his husband. He saw the mischievous smirk from a mile away.

“Because, I want to actually have good dreams. If I fall asleep with a really boring TV show, I’ll have dreams about big scary monsters that’ll kill us if we leave the town.” Kokichi said, pouting his lip.

“But that’s every day." Shuuichi said.

“So? I can still have dreams about it, Shuuichi-chan! Change the TV show already!” Kokichi whined, stretching to push his own arms into Shuuichi’s face on purpose. Shuuichi bit down the annoyance (and fondness) and grabbed the television remote that he placed right next to himself. Because he knew that when he sat down, Kokichi would immediately jump on him and force him into cuddles. Not that he minded anyway.

“Okay, okay, fine.” Shuuichi turned off the movie program and moved into the dashboard showing all of the movies. “Which one?”

Shuuichi sighed, putting on Soul Eater. Kokichi cheered, and pushed his face further into Shuuichi’s chest as appreciation.

— 🔎🎲 —

Kokichi sat at the table, left hand holding the side of his head up as he watched Shuuichi at the stove. Shuuichi stirred the pot of noodles, the smell more delicious than whatever he puts in his coffee in the morning. He tapped the wooden spoon on the pot, shaking off the remnants of sauce.

Kokichi stared at Shuuichi’s back as he tried to cook just a simple batch of spaghetti he didn’t remember the name of; watching how his beloved cooked. He didn’t think he got any less tired of Shuuichi since the last twenty years they’ve been together. Even watching the man’s back was interesting, the way he interacted with certain things. Shuuichi was interesting.

“Kokichi, you’re staring.” Shuuichi called out, snapping Kokichi out of his daze. “My apologies, Mister Detective~”

“I’m not even a detective anymore. I don’t even know if that association is still running.” Shuuichi spoke.

“Pshh, and? It’s the same thing. As the young people say, ‘tomato, toe-mah-toe’.” Kokichi said with a tease, while continuing to stare at Shuuichi.

“We’re not that old! We’re like forty-three!” Shuuichi said.

“That’s not what my body says. You would know that, wouldn’t you? Huh?”

“... Fix your own plate.”

“Hey! That’s rude!”

— 🔎🎲 —

Kokichi sat with crossed legs on the floor, a controller in hand and playing Genshin Impact (Not sponsored). He heard footsteps closing in, before feeling soft arms wrap around him from behind.

“Awee, Shuuichi, did you miss me?” Kokichi teased, but Shuuichi just pinched his shoulder. “Nishishi~ You’re such a baby, Shumai.”

Kokichi kept playing his game, making sure Hu Tao didn’t die while using her skill. Shuuichi still nuzzled his face into Kokichi’s shoulders. After a few minutes Shuuichi asked, “...When will you be done?”

“Oooo you’re THAT kind of needy~” Kokichi teased.

“Huh? No. Not even close.” Shuuichi stumbled.

“And I thought I was the liar.” Kokichi chuckled. “It’s not that hard to just tell me what you want, my beautiful and needy husband.” Shuuichi just whined in reply, slowly kissing on his neck.

Kokichi just sighed in response, still continuing to play despite the leech on him. He was getting increasingly distracted when Shuuichi started sucking on his pulse.

Kokichi’s hum horrifyingly turned into a groan towards the end; and despite the fact that he would still like to collect farming materials, he doesn’t miss an opportunity to have fun with his beloved. “You’re stubborn, you know that?” Kokichi logged out.

— 🔎🎲 —

“Hey Kokichi, where are you going?” Shuuichi asked.

Kokichi stood at the door to their home, slipping on his shoes. He looked up when he heard Shuichi’s voice, a little surprised to already see him up and out of bed. “We’re out of coffee grounds, so I'm gonna go buy some.” He was actually going to Miu’s place to make his and Shuuichi’s anniversary plans as a surprise.

Shuuichi narrowed his eyes at the lie, but his eyes softened a little bit afterwards. “Alright then,” Shuuichi walked towards him and placed a kiss on Kokichi’s forehead. “be safe.” Kokichi blushed, and before Shuuichi pulled away, Kokichi kissed him on the lips back. It lasted only a few seconds before they both pulled away.

“I’ll be back in about two hours, okay? Don’t miss me too much, Shushi~!” He knew Shuuichi could tell whenever he was lying, at least after twenty years. So seeing him fully release that tension that was in his shoulders was nice to see, that Shuuichi trusted him enough with this.

Shuuichi knew Kokichi was lying, obviously, but he couldn’t help but still think about his actual plans. He wondered if it was for their anniversary that was tomorrow, or if Kokichi had forgotten. He doubted that though, and only watched Kokichi leave. He was just overthinking, that was normal. But two hours? That was way too long to wait.

“Be safe at least!” Shuuichi called out.

When the door closed, he went and sat down on the couch, grabbing some knitting tools to pass the time.

**

“Stop making fun of meee!” Kokichi slapped Miu’s bicep to get her to stop laughing. Even after all these years, she never got any less crass.

“Every year you ask to hang at my place to fix your anniversary present for Poo-ichi, and every year it gets even and even more sappy!” Miu laughed, and Kokichi pushed her off the couch with a loud thump. “You little shit—!”

“At least I have a husband while you’re whoring yourself out for everyone in the village!” Kokichi only had a few seconds before Miu got up and tried to hit him, but he moved too fast for her to actually do any damage. “Hey! I need to work on my stuff!” Kokichi ran to the staircase as Miu was chasing him.

“I’ll feed ya’ to the monsters outside, you fucking asshole!” she yelled.

He luckily was fast enough to barge into the guest bedroom in the medium sized hut Miu lived in, slamming the door and locking it.

After a few seconds, he heard a groan outside of the door, before he heard thumps, walking away. He smirked, and then pulled out his phone.

Their last anniversary was a pretty wild one, at least Kokichi likes to think of it like that. They only went to some little, cute restaurant and had some… fun, at home. This year he wanted to do better. While there was no way he’d skip out on their ‘annual nighttime,’ he still wanted to make sure Shuuichi had the time of his life.

Maybe a scavenger hunt through the village? Put Shuuichi on a wild goose chase like in his ol’ detective days. That sounded pretty fun, and he was pretty sure Shuuichi would enjoy time to feel young again since he’s so old.

He unlocked his phone, and texted Rantarou. He probably should’ve planned this sooner, but it’s more fun to do this.

Rantarou onii-chan

Today - 13:34 PM

You: Rantarou!

Rantarou onii-chan: Yo

what do you need?

You: How would you like to help me prepare a little scavenger hunt for my husband?

**

When Shuuichi woke up at about seven in the morning, he moved to the other side to search for Kokichi, but he only found empty space. He tries to open his eyes in confusion on where his husband is, but after looking over the bed to see if he fell off, he can safely say that the man he loves is not where he was last night.

It isn’t really weird since Kokichi wakes up an hour before him, but he never really gets out of bed unless he has work. Shuuichi checks his phone— but it only shows that it was Saturday. Kokichi didn’t have work today.

He huffs, and gets out of bed, not bothering to change out of his pajamas, socked feet walking through the house. Maybe Kokichi would be in the kitchen, he thinks. But he isn’t.

But what he does find, is a letter on the kitchen counter in a purple glittery pen, which he knows for a fact is from his husband. Even before they were dating, in college he got a plethora of tiny notes scattered throughout his dorm room from Kokichi. He always wondered how Kokichi broke inside, but it was in the past now.

Heeello my beloved~! I know you must’ve been crying ur eyes out when you noticed I wasn’t in bed with you! (╥﹏╥) It was sooo hard to disconnect from you, I know the pain!!!!!!! But I’ve got a fun scavenger hunt for you for our twenty year anniversary! Bcuz I just love you sooo much Shumai! (and that’s not a lie♡)

I have a fun riddle for you! Once you figure out that riddle, you have to do even more riddles before you can reach your prize.

So, first riddle:

I’m a pretty small spot

But I can be pretty cozy

You know me a lot

A place great when you’re being nosy

Shuuichi looked at the note with a confused look. Really? A scavenger hunt? Not that he was unappreciative of course, just wasn’t what he expected. Now that he thought about it, how come they hadn’t done this earlier. It probably would’ve been really fun.

Whatever. Small, cozy, familiar and nosy… He thought. Now what in the world would that be? A couple thoughts came to mind: somewhere in the library in town, or his office across their room. Likely the second option, knowing Kokichi.

So he set the note down and treaded to his old office. He hadn’t been in there for a while, probably needed to dust now that he thought about it. When he turned the light on, he quickly noticed his old coat and hat in the chair facing the door, a little note with them.

He gasped, but he couldn’t help himself but be surprised. He treaded through the room, ignoring the need to sneeze, and softly picked up his hat he wore from back when. If he was correct, he would be about thirty years old now. He stopped wearing it completely a year into his and Kokichi’s relationship, putting it inside of a closet in his college dorm. He had never noticed that Kokichi had grabbed it.

“He kept this..?” he whispered, gaining the urge to hug and kiss Kokichi’s face for hours. He wanted to cry, but he sniffled and carefully placed the hat back down, resigning to come back for it later. He then picked up the next note, and it stated—

I can practically hear the tears from here~

I thought I might as well keep the hat and coat for memory purposes. It reminds me of the good ol’ days. Nineteen whole years, huh? I must be the most romantic husband ever♪. Just don’t tell people that!!!! Ur still able to be murdered if I say so by DICE!!!!

Next riddle is:

The first day is always the best

Like playing clue with your first mystery

Although I might better then the rest

That rest is still history

How the hell does Kokichi know rhymes like this?? Shuuichi pushed the thought down. He might be good at this or something, but he was pretty sure Kokichi was talking about their first date. Although he couldn’t help but let out a chuckle of fondness when Kokichi wrote that he was better than all of Shuuichi’s exes (because he is).

But before he left, he quickly put on some different clothes, including the coat and hat.

**

Shuuichi stepped up to the blossom tree from his and Kokichi’s first date. The tree was quite old now, but it was still pretty. He looked around the roots and saw a letter beside a small box.

He knelt down and picked up the box, opening it he saw an abundance of photographs. One was of him and Kokichi’s first date here at the tree. Another was of Shuuichi’s first (and last) time getting drunk. And another one was… Of Shuuichi singing in the shower. Okay. I think I’m done looking at the photos right now. He slipped the small box into his pocket and grabbed the third letter.

Phew, you didn’t forget our first date!

I just love those photos from our years in college. Especially the one where you were singing in the shower. Now that was hilarious!!!!!!! But don’t worry I didn’t show anyone, that ass is for my eyes only, Nishishi!! \( ̄▽ ̄)/

Now your second to last riddle! Drumroll please…:

The treats taste quite nefarious

And the smell reeks

But that run was super hilarious

And your explanation was so meek

The pattern with these letters seemed to be in order of important events they did when together. At least, maybe important to Kokichi (but they were important to himself as well.) They both met in college when Shuuichi was studying sociology for his major, and he happened to sit next to a black and purple haired boy who wouldn’t stop staring at him in their first ever period. At first it was awkward, but as soon as he walked out the door, that certain boy ran up to him.

Then, only a few months later, he found a love letter that was slid under his door when he woke up. By then, he already had a big fat crush on Kokichi, but he didn’t recognize the boy's handwriting; he had gone to the location the message stated with the intention of rejecting the person politely.

Until he saw Kokichi, sitting under that pergola, the most nervous Shuuichi’s ever seen him be. They got together that day, and a few days later went on their first date.

That aside, this must be the first time Shuuichi’s ever join Kokichi on his small heists (in reality, it was just stealing small snacks from a big convenience store.)

When he arrived at the convenience store he saw Rantarou outside. Knowing Kokichi, Rantarou was likely a part of this scavenger hunt.

When he walked over, he spoke up to get Rantarou’s attention, “I’m guessing you’re here for me?” The man looked up with a small smile. The two things he was holding, the note, and some random snacks (that were strangely Shuuichi’s favorite), but instead of answering him, Rantarou placed the items in his hand and just said. “Nice hat. Haven’t seen it in a while.”

Shuuichi huffed out a laugh and placed the snacks inside of his other pocket that didn’t hold the small box, “Yeah..” he turned to walk away, muttering a thank you.

“You have a special one, Saihara-kun.” Rantarou said, and then walked into the convenience store, after Shuuichi tried to look at him again.

He smiled, and thought, yeah, I really do.

He looked at the note in his hand and read it.

You’ve gotten so far!!! It can make a grown man like me cry!!! (ㅠ‸ㅠ) It’s fun searching around the town like your detective days huh? Isn’t this just the best anniversary you’ve ever ever had? You have bragging rights, I don’t mind my beloved~~~~

And now it’s time for your last and final riddle~:

Much like your first riddle, I’m quite comfy

A place that I can show you my love

Although the ride here can be kinda bumpy

I consist of all of the above

Are you kidding me? Shuuichi thought. Should he have known that Kokichi would go this far for something like that? Likely.

**

Shuuichi opened the door to the house, hearing some romantic music blast from their bedroom. No surprise. He walked towards the bedroom, and noticed petals peaking from under the door. How much did he prepare for this? He wondered. He was worried the mess would be too much to clean. That would be for future Shuuichi though.

And then he opened the door, seeing flower petals everywhere, the lights dimmed, and a Kokichi covered in ribbons and bows while laying lewdly on the bed.

“Where are your clothes at?” Shuuichi blushed profusely, trying not to stare holes in the ribbons (or was it wrapping paper?) covering his husband’s private parts.

Kokichi laughed, “That’s classified information, Shuuichi~!” He sat up, gently so he wouldn’t rip anything. “Why don’t you come over here, detective? I sent you on a willdd~ goose case just to find me afterall…” He said, his voice dropping down a few levels. Shuuichi never had gotten so hard in his life.

— 🔎🎲 —

Shumai!” Kokichi yelled, making Shuuichi flinch from all the way upstairs, where he was quietly reading a book. Oh no, he thought.

Kokichi didn’t get mad easily, and when he supposedly did, he’d whine and yell in your face for it; but he was just playing dramatics when he was mildly upset. When he was actually mad however, he wouldn’t say a thing and stew in his anger, so he didn’t have to subject people to his actual yelling and distress. The only time Shuuichi’s ever seen Kokichi actually mad was all the way back in college, at a girl named Maki. They had been dating for a few months at that point, so Kokichi didn’t trust him enough to help calm him down. He didn’t talk to anyone in any of his classes for days before he pretended like nothing ever happened.

Fortunately, it seems that he was just mildly upset like usual.

Shuuichi sighed and closed his book, not caring about the bookmark. He could find the page later.

Shuuichi came upstairs to see Kokichi at the stop of the staircase. He was either about to get a scolding or a beating. Or maybe both at the same time, Kokichi’s wrath knew no bounds.

“Shuishi!” Kokichi yelled again, his hands on both of his hips, standing like he just caught Shuuichi trying to sneak out of the house.

“What’s wrong? What’d I do?” Shuichi said, hoping he could get out of it somehow.

“You didn’t wake me up this morning.” Kokichi said in the most serious tone ever.

“...What?” Shuuichi questioned.

“You. Didn’t. Wake. Me. Up.”

“You wake up before me though.”

“Not today!!!” He whined, pouting his lip. “You should’ve woken me up!”

“Okay, uhm, sorry?” Shuuichi tried to awkwardly smile, but it didn’t seem to calm Kokichi down at all.

“AND! You put the cups on the high shelf. We agreed not to use those!”

“You can’t use a stool?” Although, internally, Shuuichi just wanted a chance to pick Kokichi up.

“No!!! You’re sleeping on the couch!”

“What?! Oh come on, it was a one time thing—” But Kokichi cut him off.

“—Ababababa! You’ve been a baaaaad boy! Bad boys sleep on the couch!”

“I’m— What?” Shuuichi couldn’t help but blush, but he shook it away.

Kokichi continued to scold him, pointing a finger at him. “I should just hose you down outside like the dog you are!” Then Kokichi starts to stomp down the stairs dramatically.

While Shuuichi wasn’t exactly worried about Kokichi truly being mad at him, but resorting to the couch? He did NOT want to sleep on the couch. That was like hell for sleeping. Kokichi couldn’t do that? Could he?

“Babe, can’t we talk about this?” Shuuichi asked, following him down the steps.

“No! I’m already mad!”

“I know you’re not mad.”

“Don’t decide things for me! Two days on the couch!!”

“FUCK!” Shuuichi ran his hands over his face. He knew that this fight was not serious, but he couldn’t help but play along. Maybe he’s been hanging out with Kokichi too often.

“Cussing? In my house?? THREE DAYS!”

“Oh come on!”

“Complaining? FOUR DAYS!”

The door slammed open, Kaito walking inside with a wide smile on his face. “Hey guys!” He greeted the both of them, not aware of the tension in the room flooding the whole house. Of course, it wasn’t real tension, but that didn’t mean anything in the big span of things.

“Shumai!” Kokichi yelled again.

"What'd I do this time???” Shuuichi questioned.

“You let an ugly beast into my house!”

“It’s our house! We’re married!”

“Nuh-uh! A WEEK ON THE COUCH!!!”

“Babe,” Shuuichi started, “please I beg of you.”

“Uhmm… Is this a bad time?” Kaito asked.

“YES!” Kokichi and Shuuichi yelled in unison.

At the command, Kaito exited and closed the door as fast as he could.

“Yelling at guests, Shumai? A YEAR!”

Shuuichi stood frozen and quiet for a moment, lost in thought. Then, without another word, he tackled Kokichi to the ground, earning a yelp of surprise. Kokichi yelled at him to get off, smacking the back of his head while Shuuichi fought to pacify his husband.

They fought a while, although not truly hurting each other. And then Shuuichi found Kokichi’s tickle spot. Kokichi let out a laugh, not like his mischievous chuckle, although it held that element. Trying to get out of the tickles, Kokichi then found Shuuichi’s and they both just kept laughing and laughing.

It never really was serious in the first place, was it?
