Chapter 1: Lily’s Mission

Chapter Text

Lily was on a mission.

After all of the experimenting from kindergarten, Lily and Billy set out to get rid of all of the mutated kids. A bunch of the monsters had escaped one day, and now the twins needed to kill them all. They would have preferred to save all the kids via the applesoft cure, but it had stopped being produced years ago. Lily and Billy tried to get their hands on it but to no avail. So, they unfortunately had to resort to killing the monsters. In their teen years they were almost done killing all the mutated kids.

Working during the weekends, or after school if they had time. Lily didn't sleep very well during these days. She just needed to know where all of the mutant kids had gone. Against her twin's better judgment, Lily (wanting to get the job done faster) decided to go on this mission by herself. She was prepared, mapping out where she needed to go on a map. She had packed a backpack of everything she would need, including a pocket knife to kill the monster with. Lily didn't normally like killing the monsters, she felt bad for them, but it was for the greater good.

She didn't need Billy, she was perfectly capable of killing the monster herself!

Lily was wandering through the forest where the monster had been spotted last. Making sure to remember her path so she could get back, she walked down a pathway. Deep in the forest, Lily heard a rustle in the bushes. Ducking behind a rock peering over, looking toward the bush.

Suddenly she saw it.

The monster.

This was it.

She grabbed the knife from her pocket and gripped it tightly, taking a deep breath. Lily flipped out the blade quietly, waiting for her time to strike. The monster turned its tan back, its giant teeth and eyes now focused towards the ground. She held the pocked knife tighter.

Lily then jumped up and planted a solid stab in the back. A small grunt escaped her mouth. The monster screamed in pain and instantly turned around.

A mix of blood and goo oozing out of the gash. Its wild eyes stared back at her and slashed her to the ground.

“Shit!” she muttered to herself, fumbling her pocket knife just out of reach in front of her. Now she was covered in dirt on the floor, the monster towing over her menacingly. What was she thinking? Trying to kill a monster, alone?!? Her arm was now bleeding, soaking the dirt she fell on.

“This is it” she thought “I’m going to die and it's my own stupid fault” tears began to well in her eyes, not from the pain of the cut, but from the fact she didn't get to say goodbye to anyone.

Not Billy.

Not Kidd.

Not Nugget.

No one.

As Lily closed her eyes, ready to accept her fate, she heard more rustling in the bushes around her. Then some running? A small clacking sound too. The monster growled in pain again. But from what?

She opened her eyes to see none other than Nugget.

He was swinging at the monster with his shovel, who was now basically pinned to the ground.

“Do not fret pretty Lily, Nugget is here!” he announced, continuing to keep the monster pinned.

“Nugget?!?” was all she could muster in response. He lost a bit of focus with her sudden worried tone and stumbled a bit, allowing the mutated creature to get back up. Lily began to stand up herself, grabbing the pocket knife from off the ground. The monster clawed at Nuggets shovel, it flew to the floor near Lily. Nugget, now defenseless, started to back up.

She thought quickly and grabbed the shovel from the dirt. She held her ground and swung the shovel at the monster’s face, knocking it over. Without thinking, Lily plunged the weapon into its head, killing it. The monster was dead. They were safe. But before Lily or Nugget could say anything, her head felt light, and everything went dark.

-----------------------------

Lily slowly opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was Nugget sitting in front of her, twiddling his thumbs.

“Petty Lily!” he shouted as she collected her thoughts.

Where was she?

What happened?

Why is Nugget here?

“Nugget is so glad to see you awake!” as she focused back on the person who was talking to her, the questions never left her mind.

“Hi Nugget” she responded, looking at her soundings.

She was leaned up against a tree that was near a small river. Nugget’s bag and everything inside was scattered on the ground. His jacket laid across her lap like a blanket. “What… what happened?” she finally asked.

“Well” Nugget started.

-----------------------------

After Lily had suddenly fallen to the ground, Nugget quickly rushed to her side. He inspected her arm, his face falling slightly when he noticed the cut. He then instinctively hoisted her into his arms and carried her away from the body of the monster they had just killed.

Nugget walked to an area by a river, he set her down softly on the grass up against a tree nearby. Then he dumped out the contents of his backpack, he knew he had bandages in here somewhere. After locating the bandages, he also grabbed a small cloth. Nugget took his water bottle and dampened it a bit, and delicately picked up her arm.

He began to clean around the wound, to disinfect it. He doesn't want Lily getting sick after all. After cleaning her up he wrapped her arm in the bandages, not too tight, but tight enough to stop the bleeding. After making sure she was okay, Nugget took off his jacket and laid it on top of her. He wanted to make sure she was comfortable.

Then he took a seat in front of Lily, patiently waiting for her to wake up. He looked around at the scenery, the forest was quite pretty. Trees rustled in the light breeze and leaves blew through the air. Nugget took a deep breath and started the waiting game.

---------------------------------

As Nugget finished explaining, Lily could only look at him in appreciation.

He did all that?

For her?

Pushing down a blush she started to speak “Wait, so the monster’s body is still there?” was the first thing she asked

“Yes, but Nugget contacted friends Kidd and Billy to dispose of it”

when Nugget mentioned Billy, she immediately tensed. He must be so worried about her.

“Did you tell Billy I was okay!” Lily frantically replied, sitting up a bit “Yes, of course Nugget did! He was very worried, Nugget suggests that the pretty not go on missions by herself,” “Yeah I know” she sighed, slumping back down.

“Thanks for patching me up by the way” she said as she smiled warmly at Nugget, the kind of smile that made his heart flutter

“It was no problem for Nugget” he said, waving his hand dismissively,”Nugget was just helping the pretty Lily when she was in need” she giggled a bit “I would have been toast if it wasn't for that shovel of yours”

“Nugget believes the pretty Lily could've handled it” he responded, crossing his arms

“Really?” she cocked her head

“Yes! If she wasn't so tired from researching all the time” he chuckled.

She rolled her eyes at his (true) remark.

Lily then tried to stand up but Nugget put a hand on her shoulder, stopping her. “The pretty Lily really shouldn't be standing, she hit her head pretty hard on the ground”

“No I think I'll be okay” she protested

“The pretty Lily also thought she could handle taking on a monster by herself after not getting proper sleep”

Realizing he was right, she reluctantly flopped back down with a small ‘oomph’,

“But I have to help Billy and Kidd get rid of the monster body, I should at least do that!” “Nugget knows friends Billy and Kidd are perfectly capable of disposing of the body by themselves.” Sighing Lily accepted her fate and defeatedly rested her head back and closed her eyes, taking a few deep breaths.

She felt Nugget moving next to her “Now, the pretty Lily should really rest, her and Nugget can go back home soon”

“Okay, okay” She then leaned her head on Nugget’s shoulder and began to fall asleep

---------------------------------

Lily awoke once again, the sun was hitting her eyes which was now setting in the distance. She shuffled up a bit, Nugget was still next to her.

“Is the pretty Lily awake?” he asked,

“Mhm” she hummed in response

“Is she ready to go home?”

“Yeah, what time is it?” she questioned,

“around 5 pm” Lily responded with a sigh and finally stood up, stretching her legs.

Nugget followed, scooping all his belongings back into his bag and slinging it over his shoulder.

“Alright lets head home” she announced. With that Nugget and Lily were off.

They mostly just talked about nothing while enjoying the scenery of the forest. They passed by the spot where Lily had killed the mutant and it was gone

“What happened to the monster?” she was very confused

"Friends Billy and Kidd took care of it, remember? They stopped by after words but the pretty Lily was still sleeping”

“Oh, right” she responded, not making eye contact. She was sorta embarrassed that Billy and Kidd had seen her like that. But that didn’t matter, she shook off the feeling.

As the two kept waking Lily realized they had passed where Nugget was supposed to split off to get to his house. “Isn't your house that way?” she pointed in the direction of where Nugget lived.

“Yes, but Nugget wanted to walk the pretty Lily home to make sure she got back safe”

“You really don’t have to do that”

“But Nugget wants to”

She couldn't argue with that.

They continued to walk in mostly silence before they inevitably reached Lily’s home. They both walked up the stairs to her front door,

“Thanks for…everything today, I really appreciate it,” Lily said, suddenly finding the ground ever so interesting

“Oh, it was really no problem for Nugget!” She then opened her arms for a hug, and Nugget accepted. He wrapped his arms around her and rubbed her back gently.

As she pulled away, she kept her hands on Nugget’s shoulders, staring up at him and smiling. He looked at her confused for a second before she pulled his face close to hers and kissed him on the cheek.

He froze for a second after she pulled away. Had Lily just kissed him?

“Bye Nugget!” she said before dashing into the house.

"Goodbye pretty Lily!” he shouted, then he began his walk home, smiling the whole time

As Lily entered the house the first thing she saw was Billy sitting on the stairs watching the door.

Their door was mostly glass so he could most definitely see what had just happened.

“What was that abo-” he began to tease before Lily cut him off by running up the stairs past him

“It was nothing, mind your business!!!" she yelled.
