Work Text:
“You better have a minute to spare, Heesung,” Jaekyung said, visibly furious.
At this moment, Heesung regretted coming to his training after all, having ignored his gut feeling telling him to skip it and just invite Yoongu over for some light cardio. This would have been a much nicer perspective than getting yelled at.
Or worse.
“Oh, Jaekyung hyung, it is a surprise to see you here this late,” Yoongu said, startled. “We were just about to head in for Heesung’s training session, but we can of course just come back another time if you’re using the PT room.”
“I was not talking to you, Potato,” Jaekyung scoffed at Yoongu. “Don’t get involved.”
Heesung appreciated Yoongu’s attempt to get him off the hook, but also knew it would not work. From what the actor had seen so far, Jaekyung was a difficult person to appease, and when it came to Doc Dan, there was no use in trying to reason with him.
And what Heesung had just witnessed in the PT room definitely was Doc Dan and Jaekyung in a private moment, this time one Jaekyung did not plan to share on display.
How do I always end up getting involved in his love life drama? Heesung thought and sighed.
“Follow me,” Jaekyung barked at Heesung and stepped out of the room, closing the door behind him.
I'd rather not.
“Wish me luck,” Heesung said quietly to Yoongu, who sent him a sympathetic look in return.
Yoongu followed Heesung with his eyes as he walked away. He was not sure what set Jaekyung off this time, but from what Heesung had told him, they were never on so-called good terms, despite Heesung’s efforts to make them at least good acquaintances.
Despite the tarnished relationship, it was not like he was intentionally avoiding him. Heesung still used his gym premises, which carried the risk of running into Jaekyung. It was just that there was a difference between running into him and disturbing Jaekyung during something important, and judging by Jaekyung’s reaction, the latter had just happened.
This was unfortunate, because according to the actor, Jaekyung’s rudeness and aggressive demeanor were impossible to break through, and after a few instances, he would rather not cross or provoke him.
Yoongu understood Heesung, remembering very well a few instances when Jaekyung had left him speechless, like when he poured a can of Coke over Doc Dan’s head because they were a little too loud in the evening in the hotel room.
Not to mention the numerous outbursts over minor inconveniences. Jaekyung was a great athlete and leader, yet the more Yoongu got to know him, the harder it was to imagine him having any real friends.
Therefore, when they met Doc Dan while looking for Boksoon and Heesung told him how unhinged Jaekyung had acted toward him after Doc left, Yoongu did not doubt him telling the truth.
Jaekyung had trashed Heesung’s apartment looking for Doc Dan a few months ago. Afterwards, when Doc Dan was nowhere to be found, he just left without apologizing. The whole incident was extreme even for a short-tempered hothead like Jaekyung.
When it came to Doc Dan, Jaekyung’s possessiveness was a nuisance to everyone else involved.
Speak of the devil.
Or, actually, of the angel.
The door to the PT room door opened and Doc Dan peeked out from behind the doorframe, uncertainty written all over his face.
“Hi Yoongu. I heard a slam of the door, and I also think I saw Heesung,” Dan said with the faintest blush on his face. “Where did he and Jaekyung go?”
Oh…! What was Doc Dan doing in there with Jaekyung?
From what Yoongu observed, Jaekyung and Doc Dan were on great terms, and it would be unthinkable that Jaekyung would jeopardize it, having chased after him for so long.
“Oh, they went to have a talk, but I really wouldn’t interrupt them now, Doc,” Yoongu replied, clearly off-balance. “How come you guys are still here so late?”
Doc Dan told him all about how Jaekyung started training him personally right after Team Black came back from France. They would usually work out after Jaekyung’s training was done, but because of the surge of members coming back to the gym, their training needed to be pushed back to early evening.
Jaekyung hyung is training Doc Dan himself? Life is unfair, Yoongu thought, but quickly shook the feeling of jealousy off. If they were together in there and just exercising, why was it such a big deal to walk in on them? Was it because it was supposed to be a secret?
“Wow, that is really unlike him, but good for you, Doc,” Yoongu finally said and patted Dan on the shoulder. “Is there any particular reason?”
“It’s just temporary. He is trying to help me get into better shape,” Doc Dan replied and smiled shyly.
I still don’t understand why they would keep it a secret then. Nobody would bat an eye knowing Jaekyung helped Doc Dan in this way as an extra benefit.
At most, they would be surprised he took the time to do it now, when the championship match was nearing. But again, taking into account that it was for Doc Dan, whom Jaekyung moved into his apartment and whose company he enjoyed enough to spend most of his free time with, it was not that shocking.
Yoongu subconsciously grabbed Doc Dan’s arm to have a feel, so Dan flexed it slightly.
“Oh, nice work. And just in three weeks?” Yoongu exclaimed, genuinely happy for Dan. “We should definitely schedule some sparring for just the two of us before you outgrow me in weight too much.”
“I am positive I would not be a big challenge for you even if I trained for another few months.”
“You are way too humble, Doc Dan. Also, don’t you think a few weeks or months under Jaekyung hyung’s wing are worth more than usual?”
“I guess… he is a good teacher. I will make sure to use his tips and guidance while taking care of it myself.”
Yoongu heard hesitation in Dan’s tone.
Hyung is very demanding, but he probably makes an exception for Doc Dan.
It was hard to imagine Jaekyung going easier on anybody, but since Doc Dan was his exception in almost everything, maybe he was gentler with him as well.
Dan’s expression saddened. Yoongu was about to ask about it, but Jaekyung and Heesung came back with unreadable expressions on their faces.
Heesung was in one piece, which was a good sign.
“We’re leaving,” Jaekyung announced and, without further ado, grabbed Doc Dan around the waist and led him toward the locker room. “Feel free to use the room.”
Doc Dan turned his head and arm to wave them goodbye.
Yoongu looked at Heesung. He rolled his eyes and gave him a look that conveyed silent, Don’t ask.
“So,” Yoongu bumped his shoulder into Heesung to get some energy into him. “Still up for some excercise?”
“Yeah, I need to relieve some stress, so you have no choice about either getting pinned to the mat soon or later to the bed,” Heesung teased and pinched his butt. “Or both.”
Yoongu usually would talk back, but he felt sorry for Heesung and his nervous system, so he decided to let that cocky remark slide.
We’ll see who’s doing the pinning tonight though, Yoongu thought, not feeling sorry enough to give in completely without putting up a fight.
He felt like he was going to blush, but after turning back to check if Jaekyung or Dan had heard them and figuring they probably had not, he followed the actor into the PT room.
Black Team meeting room, ten minutes ago
“Sit down,” Jaekyung growled. He was so incredibly annoyed that Heesung had walked in on him and Dan that he needed to confront him.
“I’m good, I’ll just stand,” Heesung replied and leaned against the wall, clearly tense and uncomfortable.
“Fine,” Jaekyung barked. “Then I’ll sit.”
He was not sure what exactly he wanted to tell Heesung, but what he was certain of was that he wanted to make something crystal clear.
He was about to say something, but Heesung beat him to it.
“I did not follow you to get dogged on. I don’t deserve such treatment,” Heesung stated firmly, leaning into a confident stance. “I have no intention of meddling in whatever you and Doc Dan have going on. It’s not my business, and no offense, you are clearly deranged when it comes to him.”
“It sounds like I should be offended.”
“No, it means you should take a step back and reflect upon yourself and how you treat other people.”
Jaekyung crossed his arms. He did not take Heesung to another room to get schooled, and it was irritating.
“It’s my gym. I do whatever I want here,” Jaekyung snapped and looked to the side.
“Why then, out of all the places, do that for anyone to stumble upon? Mind you, accidentally.”
“What? Teaching Kim Dan jiu-jitsu and self-defense?”
Heesung snorted.
“I don’t know any martial arts hold or position like that.”
“Are you sure? Are you suddenly the expert here?” Jaekyung scoffed. “Why do you even come by so late, sneaking into my gym like an intruder?”
“Are you kidding me? Yoongu has the keys, but he didn’t even need to use them. What sneaking in? The lights were on, for Christ’s sake.”
Jaekyung felt that hit. The further he went, the more ridiculous his own fussing seemed. He hated admitting someone else was right, especially a cunning fox like Heesung.
“Fine. So what? You accidentally saw me and Dan kiss for a bit, maybe not even that.”
“Exactly, Jaekyung. So what? I even closed the door immediately,” Heesung exclaimed. “To give you privacy, for the sake of Doc Dan especially.”
Jaekyung frowned. He was not satisfied with their talk yet.
“Why for the sake of Dan specifically?”
“Oh my God, Jaekyung, not this again,” Heesung exhaled sharply, then inhaled loudly. “Don’t complicate something that isn’t complicated. You have nothing to worry about from my side. I am neutral. I am Switzerland. Doc Dan rejected me bluntly, so all I meant was I’d rather not breach his privacy because he seems like a person who cares about it a lot.”
Jaekyung felt his thoughts racing.
“He did?”
“Yes. He was polite about it, but definitive.”
Jaekyung felt his smile grow, first shy, then spreading until he was grinning ear to ear and covering his mouth with his hand.
“Gross,” Heesung added. “Look at you, grinning all happy about it. How come you didn’t know? Is this why you forced your way into my apartment?”
Oh. This happened.
“About that, I’m sorry.”
Even though his apology was laconic. Lackluster even, Heesung looked at him with wide eyes.
“Did you really just apologize?”
“Yes. Why the fuck not? I was wrong about that, so I felt like it. You have a problem with that?”
“No, not at all. It’s actually nice to hear it from you for once.”
They stared at each other in silence for a moment. Suddenly, Heesung got a notification on his phone from Yoongu: Are you okay?
“Listen, I accept the apology and all, but I’ve had a really long day today and was not feeling it. I decided to come train in the end, so if we are in the clear now, I’d appreciate it if we could just go on with our evenings.”
Jaekyung felt a little lighter. It felt unexpectedly good to admit his mistake and have the other person respond so positively.
“All right, let’s get out of here,” Jaekyung said and got up. “Next time... I’ll make sure the door is closed.”
Teaching Doc Dan self-defense. All the self-defense he will ever need is from yourself, you freak.
Heesung was driving to his apartment. Yoongu sat next to him, focused on his phone.
"What you doing, little mutt?"
“Oh, just watching some MMA videos. I want to teach Doc Dan some techniques since he is training now.”
Not sure this is a good idea, Heesung thought, not wanting Potato to taste Jaekyung’s possessive aggression.
“Didn’t you complain your plan was skimpy on data?”
“Don’t nag. It’s not sexy.”
“Fair enough.”
All the stress had been taking a toll on him. He was all for teasing, but when it turned to nagging, nobody wanted to hear it.
“I’ll buy you a better plan with unlimited data so you can do whatever you please, nag-free. Better?”
Yoongu stopped the video and locked the screen to look at him. “Now we’re talking.”
Heesung got better at his love language - gifts, once he started paying more attention to what his partner really wanted. And the happier the partner, the merrier the quality time.
