A Heart In The Sand

Summary:

Kageyama and Hinata have been in the same school, and also the same volleyball team, for a few months now. When the time for a Roadtrip to a training camp comes, the two bond unexpectedly, and much more than they'd ever thought.

Chapter 1: Mine? (Prologue)

Summary:

Friday. It's almost the weekend. Hinata dreads riding his bike to the school much earlier than usual on Monday, and leaving it there. Kageyama might have the solution.

Chapter Text

Hinata has been horribly annoying, as he always is. But his nervous tendencies enrapture everyone. Daichi's told him at least ten times in twenty minutes to just take a breath and calmed down. “I'm fine, captain!“ he'd answer with labored breathes and the twitch of his left ring finger.

Tobio doesn't know why he pays so much attention to that specifically, but he does. He kept his eye on him all day already, it's been happening often. The twitch. Next week they're going on a road trip to Nekoma in Tokyo. A training camp. The setter is quite excited about the volleyball part, not so much the more people part, though. Well, at least he's not as nervous as a certain ginger is.

“Hinata.“ He sorta calls out to him, walking to stand next to the shorter.

“You've never been to a training camp?“

“Never.“ he stammers, “but I'm sure I'll be fine-“

“I don't doubt that.” Tobio said, trying to sound reassuring. And apparently it worked, because the middle blockers whole face softened. He's not fidgeting anymore. And his twitching finger stopped too.

“You don't?“ he asks and as if it truly were so crazy to think he'd be okay in such a setting. Tobio very simply shook his head firmly before resuming his own training. Though he did still catch a glimpse of the other tilting his head with a slight smile.

That wasn't so bad, honestly.

During lunch Tobio overhead Hinata talking to some kids from his class. He doesn't quite know why he's walking past class 1-1. Maybe because Hinata is there. But that seemed absurd to him. Anyhow, he overheard how Hinata was basically venting to them about how's already so tired only thinking about getting up at four a.m. in the morning, only to get to school in time.

Tobio reminds himself that, right, Hinata lives a little further than the others do. He has a mountain to ride with his bike, which must suck. The others can get up maybe four thirty to be here on time, he's gotta be up at four o'clock sharp.

He tries to walk past quickly when Hinata catches a glimpse of him, but he walks the same tempo as always. And the ginger doesn't stop him.

“So, why were you standing outside my class at lunch?“, Hinata asks Tobio when they get changed in the club room. Or, well, when Hinata gets changed because Tobio always leaves the gym five minutes earlier than him and is already done changing when Hinata starts. But, he still waits.

“I was just getting my milk pack,” he says, which is no lie but maybe not the full truth, "heard you talking about Monday, actually.“

“Oh, that.“

Yes, that.

“It's no big deal, I mean, we can sleep on the bus.“

Tobio nods at that. “You can't stay at anybody else's, though? Just for Sunday?“

The other pulls his hoodie over his head and thinks. He closes his bag with a sharp 'ZIP!' and grabs it.

“Well I suppose it's a bit too late to plan that now.“

He sighs. The two make their way out, lock the club room and get on their way home. Tobio waits for him as Hinata gets his bike and walks alongside him for a bit. For him he goes the longer route to his house, he wonders why. Or maybe he knows and he's just trying to push it away, like it'd work. Before he can stop his dumb mouth so he can think first Tobio speaks up again.

“You could stay at mine.“

Brown eyes look up at his side profile. A beat of silence. A long beat, at least it felt quite long. Then, the answer.

“Your parents wouldn't mind?“

“My parents won't be home, we'd stay at my older sisters place, she doesn't care, she'd be excited, probably.“, and quickly he tries to find the words to justify him trying so adamantly for Hinata to stay at his house, “it would just be easier for you, she lives close by.“

Hinata nods, looking forward again, and grips his bikes handles hard in contemplation. After a while they reach their point where they say goodbye and he looks up again.

“It'd be really great.“

“You can come by at noon.“

“Okay, thank you Kageyama.”

“Yeah, sure. See you then.“

“Mhm, bye.”

Not much thinking or moving happened those few words, then they turned to their respective directions and went to their homes. What did he just do? Inviting Hinata like that? Why did it feel so easy? It shouldn't be, Should it?
