Yamaguchi was in crisis—well, if you can call him freaking out in the living room of his best friend, (which could not be anymore after today) because you are stupid enough not to knock on someone's room, then yes, he was in crisis. Not more than 20 minutes ago, he arrived at the Tsukishima’s household and was greeted by Mrs. Tsukishima—Kei’s mom. Like usual he took his shoes off, excused himself, and went upstairs to his best friend's room.
Up to that point, everything was normal, but for some reason, he decided to enter without knocking, stumbling on something he didn’t think he wanted to see, not if he expected their relationship to maintain its course as it was. He would be lying if he said he didn't imagine Kei in a similar situation on one of his many sleepless nights, all because of his stupid—not so little—crush he had been developing over the last—what, three years?
It had started with naive, silly admiration for his savior in those first awkward elementary school years, though through minimal words and gigantic actions Yamaguchi had realized that what he was feeling wasn’t just appreciation—it was love and oh, God. In love he was, far too late to step back—fully sunk into blond hair and black frames.
Yes, Yamaguichi was completely in love with his best friend who seemed oblivious to any romantic feelings—whether Yamaguchi's or his own. At least, until now.
He opened the door to the view of Tsukki, laying on his bed with just a speck of light that found its way through the blinds making him able to see, doing what Yamaguchi could only describe as “relieving tension”. If that was all, then he wouldn't be overthinking it. Sure, it was kind of awkward, but he wasn't a saint, he wasn't going to pretend he didn't masturbate once in a while—though he wouldn't accept it either. The problem relied on what he was saying—no, whining while doing it.
Tadashi.
His name said in Kei’s husky voice, filled with lust and desperation, now being repeated in a loop inside of his head as Akiteru, the oldest brother of the Tsukishimas, brought him some water, concerned. He had slammed the door and ran downstairs claiming he was just thirsty, he doubted they had believed him with the urgency of his acts, but he couldn't be bothered to think about that. He was sure his face was filled with reds and maroons and his hands had started to sweat—something common for him when nervous.
What is going to happen now? Will Tsukki run away and hide like he usually does? He knew the tendencies his best friend had and was scared he was going to go into his bubble and push him away. Just like when he discovered the truth about his brother—he had gotten over it as the years passed, but the first couple of weeks after the incident seemed rough for him. He looked so frail and out of himself, Yamaguchi swore to never let it happen again.
He found himself rethinking his life choices slumped against the cushions, everything was fully sinking in at that point and Yamaguchi just accepted his fate, waiting for Tsukki to finish—whatever he was doing—and decided to come downstairs. While at it, his gaze wandered around the house, filled with photos of Tsukki and him, amongst other family memories. One of them was of Tukki’s tenth birthday, they were both side by side behind a smashed cake while Tukki’s face was covered in frosting and with a pronounced frown on it, he was smiling widely and he remembered how he was almost crying of laughter that day—needless to say it was Akiteru who pushed his little brothers face into the green dinosaur themed cake. He found himself quietly laughing at the memory, despise the uncomfortable situation.
Three painfully slow minutes passed before he heard soft steps coming from behind him, he figured it was Kei coming down the stairs. Deciding to confront the issue rather than escape it—with some newfound bravery—he turned around to look Tsukki in the eye, noticing a slight nervous trace in his stance, something he had learned to decipher after years of friendship. He started to walk back upstairs and Yamaguchi got the hint to follow.
Kei opened the door and closed it after he had entered, Yamaguchi wasn't going to ignore the click as Tsukki turned the lock. He gulped and decided to sit on the desk, to put some distance—he didn't know what he would say or do if he was closer, as Kei sat on his bed, Yamaguchi found it a little too distracting and chose to stare at the floor, feeling a pair of eyes dig into him. Seconds felt like hours as he appreciated the lines the wooden boards had, taking in the smell of what he recognized as Tsukki’s, musky, citrusy and fresh.
“Sorry.”
The awkward silence was broken by Yamaguchi, a nervous smile painted on his face. Tsukki responded quickly “Hey, no, I’m sorry you saw that, I-” Yamaguchi’s head came up so fast it felt like it could have snapped, “No, no, I was the one who entered without knocking. God—I didn't even tell you I was going to visit, I’m the one who's sorry, really, really sorry, and-” He was mumbling again and decided to shut up when he glanced up again to see Kei’s frown. “Please stop apologizing.” Tsukki mumbled with his head now in his hands, seemingly embarrassed. His eyes widened in a mix of surprise and confusion, “I’m the one who's in love with his best friend.” He froze, and it seemed Kei did too as if he didn’t mean to let the words slip. He finally realized that it was okay—it was just Kei.
As he was about to respond he was interrupted by Kei who started talking again and looked rather flushed. Yamaguchi had never seen him like that—not even when Akiteru shared his most embarrassing stories the days he had dinner with the family, in those days he limited himself to kicking his brother under the table and clearing his throat. If he was honest, he would say he looked quite cute right now. “Don't say anything, I just…” Yamaguchi almost ran across the room and kissed him—actually, crashed his lips into Tsukki’s. It wasn't the pretty, sweet, and innocent kiss he had wished for, but they were far too needy and far too grown for that. There were tongues intertwining and teeth crashing, Kei’s hands finding their way to Yam's waist, guiding him to sit on his lap while he was grabbing Tsukki’s hair like his life depended on it. They were grunting and whining in ways they had never thought. The hands on his waist started roaming further down before getting back to their original place making him sigh. Sure, they were inexperienced and a little naive, but that didn't make the experience any less satisfying.
Sadly, it ended quite quickly, when they separated an obscene ‘pop’ was heard, followed by their heavy breaths. They looked at each other full of lust and almost admiration, still holding each other, feeling way too hot for the middle of the winter.
“I love you too, Tsukki.” He smiled and Tsukki scoffed, “Yeah, I figured.” Yamaguchi giggled and Kei’s pout quickly transformed into a smile, while he caressed Yam's waist with softness that crept up to his eyes. Yamaguchi weirdly saw this side of him, but he wasn't one to complain, since he was truly in love with it. “God, I was so scared,” he confessed with a shaky laugh, smiling like a love fool while looking into a pair of golden eyes. “I never thought I would find you jerki-” Tsukishima kissed him suddenly—just like he had done some minutes ago, but he made it original by biting his bottom lip as a punishment. If that was what he got for teasing him, he would do it more often. Kei’s frown immediately returned as they parted. “Shut up, Yamaguchi.” Yams smiled, giving him a quick chaste kiss, “Sorry, Tsukki.” A new round of laughter filled the low-lit room and the sight of one another made them soften.
“Should I help you finish what you were doing earlier?” Yamaguchi’s usual smile turned into a flirtatious one—feeling surprised at his own straightforwardness—while he took Kei’s glasses off putting them somewhere in his bed, making Kei flush even more, having never imagined his best friend being as direct, it was surprising though not unwelcomed. He smirked and kissed him again—bringing them both down onto the bed, hoping he would understand that as a confirmation. Luckily, Yamaguchi knew him way too well to ever miss it, taking one of his hands and sliding it through his shirt, his mouth moved too as he did so, placing little pecks at the corner of his mouth and jaw turning into wet kisses on his neck.
He bit his lips trying to stifle the sounds and sighs threatening to escape him, he had had enough with Yamaguchi hearing him before. Quickly though, Yamaguchi stopped his kisses, “Hey, stop that.” He felt his breath still at his neck, now sensitive, and he felt the hairs at his nape stand.
“Stop what?”
“You know, keeping quiet. Just relax, ok?” By now, Yamaguchi had propped himself up with his elbows at Kei’s sides, looking at him intently. “I heard you before, it’s nothing new now,” Yamaguchi received a smack on his shoulder. “You don’t need to be so shy, except you don’t want this…” His mood changed slightly at the thought of forcing Tsukki to do something, but he quickly sealed his doubts, kissing him again, now more slow and controlled.
“It’s not that, ok? Just feels… weird.”
Tsukishima hid his face with one hand letting out a groan, his cheeks feeling hot. “C’mon Tsukki, don’t tell me you’re embarrassed?” He just added another annoyed sound and Yamaguchi giggled, taking the hand out of his face letting him see his slightly crooked teeth and freckles hiding his blush. At that moment, he thought he couldn’t be more in love.
“How is it weird?” Yamaguchi asked.
He was a bit taken aback, but responded nonetheless, “I guess having you like this, after years of simply studying next to you giving me heart attacks, it’s hard to adjust to you sucking my neck, you vampire.”
Tsukishima flicked his forehead, and Yamaguchi frowned momentarily. Having Kei be this honest and open with him had honestly been a challenge they both put about equal effort on obtaining—even in simple things like admitting he’s hungry—and Yamaguchi couldn’t help but feel proud about how far they had reached together.
“At least I'm a cute one! Wait, you liked me all this time?” Tsukishima only nodded, far too red-faced. “I can’t believe this, I thought- Actually, I don’t know what I thought.” Yamaguchi giggled. “Maybe you want to take it slower? I did get a little excited.”
“A little?”
“Ok, yeah. Just—you said you loved me and you looked so nervous, but also so, so cute. How can you blame me?” He placed both hands on his chest, resting his cheek upon them.
Unconsciously, his hand found its way back to green hair. ‘Shut up, Yamaguchi.’ was what he would have said, but instead he chose to be honest, “I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared. But—yeah, let’s go slow.”
“Ok, slow is good too if I get to have you like this on the regular.” Yamaguchi nuzzled into his hands and closed his eyes, hearing Kei’s heartbeat.
“Don’t get too used to it.” His free hand started to stroke his back.
“Oh hush, you love it.” At that Tsukishima only hummed, relaxing even more. Only once he heard light snoring from Yamaguchi, he allowed himself to sleep, fully relaxing and smiling like a fool. Though their nap ended quite abruptly by Akiteru banging the door and calling them to dinner, it took them some time to wake up, but sure enough they started going down the stairs.
The dinner went smoothly, with some jokes here and there and Akiteru making fun of his brother as usual. “I’m guessing you’re staying the night?” Mrs. Tsukishima gave Yamaguchi a little knowing smile and he felt the color come back to his face, he nodded showing a sheepish smile like he hadn't slept there countless times before. She laughed, making everyone on the table wonder what she knew that they didn't—well, except the two teens who had an idea of what she had discovered. They washed their dishes and went back upstairs, deciding to simply watch Jurassic Park—seriously, again?—and head to bed.
The movie itself they had watched countless times, so Kei decided watching Tadashi was incredibly more entertaining—having him curled into his side, tracing little circles on his chest with his fingers while he lightly giggled at some stupid joke he hadn’t paid attention to. He found himself smiling without even noticing until Yamaguchi did, resting his chin on his arm and looking at him just to follow by nuzzling into his neck, humming content, tickling him a bit. Kei snuggled his face into the green hair and tightened his arm around the other's waist, closing his eyes and relaxing completely. Feeling warm and fuzzy, he started thinking he could lay like that forever, with his favorite person in the world.
“I know it's late, but—would you be my boyfriend, Tadashi?” He broke into a fit of giggles, “Oh, my God. Tsukki! Obviously yes though.” Kei followed laughing too, squeezing his now boyfriend harder as they both laughed, softer now, looking at each other caringly.
“Why were you even here in the first place?” The room was even darker now, they had properly laid on the bed, Tsukishima laying on his pillow while Yamaguchi was using him as a pillow. “Honestly? I have no idea at this point. Sorry Tsukki,” more laughs and endless conversations followed the evening, caresses and little kisses weren't left out either.
Being together felt secure, and known, even when trying new things and completely changing their dynamic and erasing everything their friendship entitled, to replace it with blurted-out confessions and needy touches, it was ok—because they were the same, still the extremely tall boy protecting his freckled friend. Still the little boys who slept with the night light on, and still the pre-teens making fun of his girl-crazy classmates. Now some hormone-full teenagers learning what they like and deciding on doing it together.
