"He's still asleep?" Owen startles slightly, having not noticed Shelby enter the room. He nods, glancing back at Avid, who lays in a makeshift bed that Owen had thrown together. He hadn't bothered with a bed before, having no need for sleep, but he wasn't going to leave Avid on the floor.
"I don't think I took this long," Owen says with concern. Shelby nods, worry evident in her expression.
"Me and Pyro were both quick, but our turnings were... more brutal," Shelby says thoughtfully. "I think Scott's starting to get suspicious, especially with Avid being gone for so long," she continued. Owen frowned. He had expected to explain things to the other vampires once Avid was awake, but he hadn't expected it to take this long.
"It's fine, I doubt Scott cares enough to do anything, he's probably just annoyed with the town blaming him," Owen shrugged, and Shelby hummed in agreement. "Mind watching him for a bit? I need to go hunting," Owen asked the younger vampire.
"Sure! See you in a bit," Shelby happily agreed. Owen nodded and left.

The room was still. Shelby sat with a book in her hand, glancing over at Avid periodically. She leans over to brush hair out of his face. The moment her fingers brush against his forehead, she flinches, surprising heat from his skin almost burning her. Shock and worry fills her. Something is wrong.
Her book is forgotten as she paces, glancing back at Avid occasionally. Indecision pulls at her. She can't leave Avid, especially not like this, but...
She hopes Owen gets back soon.

Shelby was standing when Owen came back. She had stopped pacing, but worry kept her from sitting down. She let out a relieved breath at Owen's return.
"I'm so glad your back, something's wrong," Shelby spoke hastily. "He's burning up," she said, moving to the side to let Owen past. He approached the still sleeping Avid, his brow furrowed in confusion.
"He's-" Owen starts to speak, but is interrupted as his hand brushes against Avid's skin. Owen's hand flinches back, but he can still feel the unnatural heat that radiated from Avid. He mutters to himself in shock, "what the hell."
"I thought you would know what to do," Shelby admits, concern across her features. Owen shakes his head, not looking away from Avid.
"I don't, vampires aren't supposed to get sick, but..." Owen pauses in thought. "Avid's wound is supernatural, so I'm not sure what we're dealing with," Owen admits.
"Scott might," Shelby suggests cautiously. Owen frowns, he had wanted to hold off before telling the rest of the coven, but he knows Shelby is right. "I can talk to him, I think he'll listen to me more," Shelby continues after a moment. Owen just nods.

Scott didn't know, which terrifies Shelby. If even a millennia old vampire hasn't seen this before... what are they dealing with?
She sighs, trying to relieve the worry that fills her. She rests a hand on the sleeping Avid.
She rests a hand on Avid.
She gasps as she realizes, he's not burning up anymore. He's still warm, oddly warm for a vampire. Still, she races to tell Owen the good news.

A few days later Owen sits reading when Avid awakes. He doesn't notice the younger's open eyes right away, not until he hears Avid gasp. Owen sits up quickly, walking over to Avid, who was slowly sitting up.
"Do you feel alright?" Owen asks. Avid blinks, his thoughts sluggish. He considers Owen's question, realizing that there's a dull ache in the back of his skull. The room is too bright and too warm, but he still shivers, pulling the blankets around him.
"It's bright," Avid croaks, his throat dry. Owen nods, wordlessly hands him a bottle of blood. Avid stares at it for a moment, uneasy at the thought, but he was so hungry. He drinks the bottle quickly, and Owen hands him another. "Thanks," Avid says quietly.
"You should get used to the night vision soon, if that's all, I'm going to let everyone know you're awake," Owen explains. Avid hesitates, but the ache in his skull is quickly turning to pounding pain. Avid shuts his eyes tight, trying to find some relief.
"My head is killing me," Avid admits, hesitating a moment for continuing. "Is this room really warm?" Owen raises an eyebrow in concern.
"You're shivering," He points out. Avid feel stuck between throwing the blanket off him, and pulling it tighter. Owen sighs when Avid doesn't respond. "I'll see if Scott knows anything, but maybe you should rest," Owen suggests. Avid nods, too tired to process much of what Owen was saying, and is quickly asleep once more. Owen watched the younger for a moment, a feeling that is too close to worry sitting uncomfortable in his chest.
He doesn't want to care about something, it's never ended well in the past, but still he watches the young vampire take shallow breaths. He leaves to find Scott.

"Vampires can't get sick," Scott tells Owen with a shrug. Owen clenches his jaw, frustrated with the elder's lack of information, and care.
"But he is," Owen points out harshly. Scott frowns with slight annoyance.
"Then he's not a vampire."
