Holding my Breath till I Abstract

Summary:

A character study on the different effects everyone has when holding their breaths, and how it relates to each of their personalities.

Notes:

I had the idea that everyones "power" when holding their breath shows the opposite of who they are, so I decided to write a fic about it!

Work Text:

Pomni was tired after the adventure. It was only her third day here, but she wasn’t any more used to it when she got here. Finding out she turned into a rainbow disco ball when she held her breath was… interesting?

This place seemed to have even more surprises the longer she stayed. It was definitely an adjustment to make. She always prided herself on being serious when the situation required it. So the fact that she was here? In this ridiculous place, as a fucking clown? Well, it left a lot to be desired.

Not to mention that instead of getting an ability that was useful like Kinger, she just started turning into a bunch of colors. Could her life get any more unserious? Even though she was in hell earlier, this digital landscape was starting to feel more and more like her own personal hell every day.

~~~
Sitting in the dark, Kinger felt his mind start to stabilize once more. Today’s adventure had reminded him how much he hated the light. It was ironic that his special power requires him to not only stand in the spotlight, but to be in the spotlight.
How he longed for the days when it was just him and Queenie laying in the impenetrable fortress, reminiscing about the days before the circus. It was dark and quiet, only broken by the sound of her laughs.
God, she had a beautiful laugh. She really was the most gorgeous in the dark. He loved being kissed by her and being held by her. She made him feel safe in a way that only his fortress had achieved. Every time he looked at her, he always seemed to loose his breath. Of course then he would start glowing and ruining the moment like always.
Ragatha needed to be in control. Maybe that was why she pretended to be positive all the time. Because if she was happy, she was in control. If only Jax and Pomni understood that.
She hated holding her breath. Her hair stuck up and nothing she did could make it go down. Why couldn’t hers be something useful or something she could control at least? Why did it have to be a physical manifestation of how little control she actually had?
If she could just show everyone that she had their best interests in mind, maybe they could all get along again. Maybe everyone could finally be happy if they would just listen to her.
~~~

Gangle liked consistency. Well, that was a lie. She didn’t like it per say, but it was reliable. If she couldn’t count on her emotions to be consistent, at least she could count on her life to be.

Even if that consistency meant all her dreams laid dead and buried, it was worth it. It had to be worth it. Why was she even bothering thinking about this? It wasn’t like it held any actual meaning. Nothing did.

It was probably only because of the conversation they had this morning. Was that really only this morning? It felt like ages ago. When she held her breath and her mask was spinning, it felt the same as when her comedy mask broke. There was never any consistency to it. It was just random. She hated it. At least her regular mask stayed the same. Even if it meant she stayed sad.

Zooble had a lot of practice holding their breath. Whenever they hid from Caine who was spouting another bullshit adventure, they held their breath. They supposed it wasn’t really necessary, but it was a force of habit.

Still… they were always thankful when Caine passed by quickly and they didn’t have to hold their breath long enough for their limbs to straighten out.

Having this body with all it’s removable and adjustable parts was bad enough, but to have a physical reminder of how strange and unordinary she normally was every time she tried to hid away hurt.

Sure Jax thought it was funny that she turned straight because of the obvious pun, but she hated it. It never failed to remind her just how badly she had failed at being normal in the real world, and even in this digital circus where they could do anything, she still wasn’t normal.

~~~
Jax hid himself in his room after the adventure like always. Groaning, he remembered why today was so terrible. Not that any day was particularly good, but at least on other days he could make fun of other people’s emotions.
No, today was terrible because he was reminded of the special powers they all got when holding their breath. Well, everyone else got special powers. What did he get? A fucking mental breakdown. Every time he tried to hold his breath, he just started crying. Like a fucking baby.
God how pathetic was it that everyone got cool and special powers, and he was stuck with a stupid reminder of all the emotions he had every pushed down. He could never let the others know about his power. No, then they would think he was not only an asshole. But a weak asshole.
Sure, he had tried the whole being nice(ish) and having friends thing before. And what did he get? Memories he couldn’t bare to face, and constant reminders that any one of them could be next to abstract.
It was better to just push his emotions down and never let them see how pathetic he was when he had to hold his breath. At least that was what he told himself as he sat in his room, holding his breath in order to feel something again.
