Jack didn't so much as wince as he pressed the dull blade into his arm, creating numerous bleeding lines in the flesh.
It hurt, sure, but that was the point, wasn't it? His depression had sapped all sort of feeling from him, leaving him an apathetic husk. He just wanted to feel something. Anything.
"Ya did it again" Crutchie said solemnly as he noticed the bandages on the other newsboy's arm. Jack didn't deny it. He couldn't. "I wish you wouldn't do that"
"It's not that simple" Jack deflected. Crutchie nodded.
"I know" Crutchie sighed. "I's just... Can I hug ya, Jack?"
Jack nodded and accepted the small comfort.
He swore to himself that, one day, he'd stop this self-destructive habit. He didn't think he could give it up any time soon, but he would one day.
And Crutchie would be there for him through it all.
