When The Fireworks Go Off

Summary:

"Hm, probably off with the other hall monitors," Jophiel paused for a second before she got an idea, "do you mind if I hang out with you for the rest of the party? I was originally hanging out with my siblings but Saps and Snowbird were being idiots, anddd I kinda need a reason to ditch them for the time being."

"Um, sure I guess," Cynikka responded, patting the turf beside them. Jophiel quickly sat down, a small thanks leaving her mouth.

Or:

Cynphiel is criminally underrated, and I love highschool AUs :)

Work Text:

Cynikka checked their watch, seeing that it was around 11:30. Just 30 more minutes until New Years, and 30 more minutes until they could leave. The Student Council at their high school was hosting a New Years party on the football field. Originally, Cynikka hadn't planned to come, but their younger brother, who only had his permit, begged them to drive them there and pick him up. Cynikka didn't see why Flux couldn't hitch a ride from one of his friends, but here they were.

It was surprisingly warm for New Years, leaving them to only wear a t-shirt and some baggy jeans that used to belong to Ender. With how rich their family was nobody would expect any hand-me-downs, but both Cynikka and Flux had gotten plenty of hand-me-downs from their older brother.

Cynikka was sitting on one of the edges of the Football field, around the 30-yard-line. They would've been talking to one of their friends, but Benji was sick at home(when wasn't he?), Lingulini was off with his…weird group of 'friends' that Cynikka didn't want to get involved with, and the rest of their friends either didn't show up or were off with a bigger congregant of people.

Cynikka took another sip from the soda they'd gotten from the snack stand at the other side of the field when they had first gotten here. Most of the drinks were lukewarm considering no one had thought to bring a cooler to put the drink in.

Cynikka turned behind them to see some people on the bleachers hanging out. However, what really caught their attention was beneath the bleachers they could catch a glimpse of…was that Schpood and his faithful lapdog —5pyder— kissing? Well, more like eating each other's faces. Cynikka couldn't say they were surprised, 5pyder followed Schpood like a fucking dog. He always agreed with the other, always helped Schpood "win" arguments. By win they meant threatening to either 1) Fight the other person or 2) Report them to the Principle for: "arguing with authority". Schpood treated being a hall monitor like being a tyrant, and he was only a junior!

Cynikka turned back around to the field, bringing the can up to their lips. However, they almost choked onto the drink when a voice broke through the silence close to them.

"Hey, Cyn! What are you doing alone?" Jophiel spoke up from behind them.

"Oh, I'm waiting for the fireworks to go off so I can take my brother back home and get this over with," They responded.

"Oh, well, have you seen Schpood anywhere? I've been looking for him for a bit." Jophiel rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly.

"Nope, haven't seen that tyrant anywhere," Cynikka quickly responded, wanting to get this interaction over with.

The two of them sat in silence for a minute before Cynikka spoke up.

"You're in my Calculus class right? I think I see you in the front with um…oh, Snowbird. Your brother, right?" Cynikka asked, trying to break the awkward silence.

"Yeah, he's an idiot."

"Wait, aren't Saparata and Micro twins? I swear they switch places sometimes," Cynikka asked, taking another sip of their soda.

"Yeah, identical twins. People used to get them confused so much that Micro tried dying his hair." Jophiel let out a soft laugh at that memory.

"So their hair is natural. Well, that makes the two remind me of that one character from a show. Can't remember the name though," Cynikka responded, racking their brain for something.

"Oh, the kid in the orange polo?" Jophiel answered.

"Yeah!"

"Honestly, I can see that. With Saps specifically though, not Micro," Jophiel let out another laugh.

"Hey, since we're on the subject of family, how's yours doing?" Jophiel asked, not noticing the tense in Cynikka's shoulders or them tightening their grip on their soda.

"Elanuelo is trying to make Ender a 2.0 version of him and Crow is fonding over Flux. So, pretty normal I'll say."

"What about you, Cynikka?"

"Hm?"

"You talked about your brothers, so what about you?" That stumped Cynikka. Sure, they had Turkey, but Elanuelo had tried his damned hardest to keep Cynikka away from their other father.

"Well, I have Turkey I guess, but he rarely has a chance to visit. Elanuelo acts like I'm Turkey's fault, and his fault only. Which is hilarious considering Elanuelo was the one that initiated it," Cynikka explained. Trying to ignore how Jophiel seemed to tense up and fidget awkwardly.

"Well, it's only a few more minutes until New Years, so might as well wait," Cynikka stated awkwardly, trying to find a reason to stop talking. They hadn't noticed throughout the entire time that Jophiel had been overly awkward or that her cheeks were tinted pink the entire time. No, she couldn't be like that towards them. There was no way in hell.

Cynikka could hear, no feel, Jophiel scoot closer to them, just slightly though, but still noticeable. Cynikka just brought their soda to their lips as a way to distract themselves.

"Hey, Cyn?" Jophiel spoke, turning her head to look at the shorter of the two.

Cynikka brought their drink down from their lips to turn their head sideways, and up, to look at Jophiel. They…they hadn't realized until now how absolutely stunning she was until now.

Jophiel had blond hair that fell in waves, always perfect and always having at least one braid running over her shoulder. She had always smelled like flowers, something that Cynikka didn't understand. They had always smelled like smoke from the countless fires they had in the woods behind their house, always to blow off steam.

Next, were Jophiel's gorgeous eyes. They were this dusty blue that always had a certain warmth to them. Right beneath them were the freckles that littered Jophiel's cheeks, surprising due to her more pale nature. However, Jophiel must've noticed Cynikka staring because she spoke up about it.

"Hey, Cyn, you good?" Jophiel tilted her head in question, having not gotten an answer from Cynikka the first time.

"Oh, um, yeah," Cynikka let out a fake cough, trying to "clear" their throat. However, they didn't turn away from Jophiel, not yet.

The two of them sat there for a moment before Jophiel let out a mumbled phase that Cynikka couldn't catch, but before they could ask Jophiel's hand cupped the back of their neck and pulled them in.

Cynikka froze up immediately, the feeling of Jophiel's lips against theirs sent fireworks shooting off in their head. And not just in their head, Cynikka guessed it must've just hit New Years because they heard the boom of the first fireworks going off. Instead of pulling away however, Cynikka's —shaky— hand came up and cupped Jophiel's cheek gingerly.

The two of them stayed like that for a moment, half lost in shock, another half savoring the moment. But, the need for air came, and Jophiel pulled back gasping. Cynikka looked at Jophiel, and felt like they had just seen an angel. Jophiel's face was almost entirely flushed, her eyes lightly widened, her mouth gaping open like a fish on the surface.

Before Cynikka could stop themselves, they pulled Jophiel back in for another kiss just as the second set of fireworks went off. This time, however, their one of their hands tangled in Jophiel's hair. They couldn't bring themselves to care how uncoordinated and inexperienced both of them were, this all just felt too good. The only thing that made Cynikka pull back faster than the last kiss was the knowledge that there was people on the bleachers behind them who could easily see this display.

Cynikka pulled back quickly, the cup that was originally in their hand forgotten and spilled on the turf. They held a hand up to their lips as they looked at Jophiel. Gray eyes meeting dusty, blue eyes for just a second before Cynikka sputtered in embarrassment.

"I-i have to go… sorry Jophiel!" Cynikka quickly got up, running to the football field's fence, their face felt as if it was on fire, threatening to suffocate them if they didn't get out. Cynikka's feet kept going, not bothering with the gate, they —clumsily— jumped over the fence and into the parking lot. They needed to get out, to get to their car and try to think through this all.

Cynikka slumped against their car inhaling air as their lungs burned. Cynikka snatched their phone from their pocket, their hands hastily moving to the messages app.

Notes:

I suck at romance. So this was a struggle. Ignoring my past Raspfly Fics I definitely haven't improved much, lol. Probably gonna write more Cynphiel stuff in the future like I did with Raspfly.

Hope you enjoyed this! :] Constructive Criticism and suggestions are always welcomed and VERY appreciated!

Until next time.
