Luz didn’t remember falling asleep in class but clearly she must have because she’s waking up now, a second later she realizes she isn’t laying face down on the desk, no she’s lying flat on her belly, soft carpet beneath her head.
The teacher hasn’t come to check on her? Is class over?
Luz pushed herself up, or tried anyways, a wave of nausea washed over her and her strength faltered, her face falling a measly two inches back to the soft carpet.
The carpet is soft.. that’s weird, school carpet is usually so scratchy and uncomfortable to lay on, Luz knows from experience.
Luz opens her eyes fighting against the pounding headache, she’s not at school she’s in her room, that makes more sense.. sorta, wasn’t she just in school?
The light from her desk lamp hurt her eyes tears welling up, something was wrong with her.
“Mami!” She cried out, throat dry and raspy
A moment passes before the creaking of stairs announced rescue “Oh Titan!” an unfamiliar voice exclaims before they rush back down the stairs.
After what felt like forever two sets of footsteps came back up the stairs “Mija I’m here” mom cradled me my head still pounding “you’re burning up.
Vee can you help me get her into bed” mom said, who’s Vee?
Someone hefts me up laying me on the bed
“Do you want some water Mija?” Mom asks
“yes” I say with some effort
“Ok Mija I’ll go grab you some water”
“Thank you” I softy rasp
…
“What happened Luz?” The stranger, Vee asked “is this just like the human flu or something? Because I’ve never seen you this sick before.” Vee said
Who is Vee? I open my eyes again and past the blur I see an older girl with greenish blond hair and a concerned look on her face, I have never met her before in my life.
Am I forgetting whole people now?! How sick am I?
I’m too tired to speak, too tired to think, I just wanna get back to sleep.
“Don’t worry Hermana” Vee spoke “I’ll be here for you” she grasped my hand with a soft smile
She called me her sister…?
Mom came back a water bottle in hand “how you doing Mija”
I eagerly gulped down the water soothing the roughness “tired, think i caught something.” I finally managed to say
“Ok Mija I’ll turn the lights down and let you get some rest, you can finish your homework once you’re feeling better.
Vee can you keep an eye on her and let me know if you need help, I’m gonna call Eda first thing tomorrow to let her know Luz is gonna be out sick.”
“Ok mom, goodnight, I love you” Vee my sister?? Replied
“Buenas noches Vee” and a kiss to the forehead
“Buenas noches Luz” and a goodnight kiss for me too
“Night mom” I say before I finally let my fatigue get to me
Yes sleep would be good right about now.

The Next Morning

Luz’s eyes flutter open to the early morning sun peaking through the curtains
Fragmented memories of last night realigning in her head
That was one crazy fever dream last night, suddenly having a sister, that would be nice… I miss dad…
Something was wrong, not in the same way as last night, no everything else was wrong.
I’m feeling better but my body still feels weird, longer but that can’t be.
Looking around Luz saw other concerning oddities, her whole room had been rearranged, new posters in place of old, Polaroids speckling the cork board, unfamiliar nicknacks covering every shelf, the tail of a huge snake plushie hanging down from the top bunk.
This is not how Luz remembers her room but it is undeniably her room.
Why couldn’t she remember, how much is she forgetting!
Luz threw off the blankets and got out of bed
She stumbled in an unsettling way but she managed to not crash into the floor as she made her way out into the hall “mom!” Luz called before knocking on her door
“come in” her mom said drowsiness in her voice
Luz opened the door as Camila rubbed sleep out of her eyes and put on her glasses
In the early morning light and clearer vision Luz could see that her mom was different too, graying slightly with more wrinkles, her mom was older and so was Luz.
“Mami I, I can’t remember.”
“Remember what?” She said growing concerned
“My room it’s different, you’re different, I’m different” tears started welling up as the overwhelming weight of the her apparent amnesia hit her
“Shh shh Mija you’re ok, you’re gonna be ok.” Mom cooed as she hugged Luz
“what you remember.”
“I was.. I was at school” Luz blinked away tears “I was getting ready for my book report, I even brought garter snakes and fireworks to give it that pizzazz you know and then I woke up on the floor last night.”
“…Mija that, that was five years ago” she said softly as the words hit like a hammer “don’t worry, you’re gonna be okay Mija, we’ll get Eda and she’ll know what to do”
Dread already building but the question had to be asked “Who’s Eda?”
The question seemed to stop mom in her tracks “..she’s our neighbor, sorry I forgot you haven’t met her yet.”
“Is she a doctor?” Luz asked
“Er no but I think she can help” suddenly mom looked to the door “Vee could you go fetch Eda”
“Ok mama, I’ll be right back Luz” said Vee the very real and not fever dream person, who apparently was just standing there before running off to get whoever Eda is.
How long was she watching us?
“Vee’s my sister? How’d that happen!”
“She needed a place to stay and once we got to know her, we were both happy to welcome her into the family.” Mom gave a small smile
“Really? Just like that?”
“Just like that, trust me you’ll get along with her, the two of you are practically twins.” mom gave a laugh at some forgotten joke, I hope I’m not the butt if it.
“I’m scared Mama” Luz said honestly
“I know Mija but I know you’re going to be ok” a comforting lie, still I hope she’s right
The back door slammed shut, it seems Vee is back with Dr. Eda or whoever she is.
With some creaking of the stairs, another stranger I’m supposed to be familiar with joined us.
If she didn’t have amnesia Luz knew she’d never forget someone like this, a pale complexion and greying hair made Eda look almost ghostly, heterochromic eyes, a hooked hand, red dress, a bandana covering part of her hair and a cocky smile completing the look, an absolute weirdo and rocking it.
Eda was a complete stranger yet something in the back of Luz’s mind begged her to remember.
“How ya feeling kiddo, heard ya blanked hard” Eda said casually, mom was right she isn’t a doctor, at least not like any doctor Luz had been to. Luz didn’t like doctors much
Mom spoke up “she says she can’t remember, well anything in the past five years” said with concern in her voice
“Hmm” Eda pursed her lips “and this started last night?”
“Yes” Luz said hoping Eda had an idea what was wrong with her
“Hmmmmm, do you mind if I take a look around you and Vee’s room?” Eda asked
“Uh yeah sure” I replied, not sure what she’s hoping to find
“I’ll show you around” Vee offered
“Thanks slithers” Eda answered, slithers? Why does Vee get a cool nickname?
Eda and Vee left to look for clues in my.. our room, all of this is so weird.
As the murmur of the two familiar strangers talked in the other room Luz looked back to her mother. “You’re gonna be ok Mija, if Eda can’t figure it out then she knows a whole slew of people who’d be eager to help.”
“But what if they can’t!” Luz all but shouted panic gripping her once more
Her mom took a few moments but eventually she said “then you’ll get to meet everyone all over again.”
Luz deflated whatever anger and fear was there left her “that.. sounds hard, I don’t think anyone would still wanna be friends with me.”
“Of course your friends will still be there for you!” Her mom said “you’re a wonderful person and you’ve got some pretty good friends.”
Friends, the thought is as strange as having a new sister out of nowhere.
“Ok!” Eda said having rejoined us “I think I figured it out, and it’s kinda my fault a little bit.”
Camila narrowed her eyes “and how’s that?”
“The potion homework I assigned her, I wasn’t really thinking about ventilation wards so she musta caught a whiff of the memory potion I had her brewing, she should be fine in less than a week.” Potions? Wards? Is she pretending to be a witch? Heh no wonder I like her
Eda then looked Luz in the eyes
“don’t sweat it kiddo, you aren’t the first witch this has happened to and you won’t be the last, trust me” she ruffled Luz’s hair “Have fun with this, trust your mom and your sister and take it easy, I’ll let everyone know what’s up.” Eda’s dressing it up for me but I’m assuming she’s actually just my high school chemistry teacher.
“Uh yeah sure, uh thanks Ms Eda”
“Oh Titan don’t call me that, makes me feel older, just call me Eda, you know what I’ll send Boots by to keep an eye on you.” She smiled wryly
“Thanks for coming so quick Eda.” Camila said finally smiling brightly with some good news
“Course, you’re family! Anyhoot I gotta go, got Important Teacher Stuff to do” Eda said heading back down stairs
“Mom can we” Vee started then stopped to look at Luz “Luz do you want some breakfast?”
“Yea actually, I’m starving.” Luz said
“Okay Mija let’s get some food.”
Maybe today won’t be so bad

Down Stairs

Luz stared at the pictures on the walls, since when did mom do cosplay?
Hanging on the living room wall were dozens of small picture of herself, her mom, Vee, Eda and several other people she’d never met, most of them cosplay photos of some sort, fake ears and clothes clearly not bought at the department store.
“What are you looking at?” Vee asked coming to stand next to Luz
“Since when did mom do cosplay?” Luz asked pointing to one picture from Galaticon 2023
“Yeah I know, mom’s been showing her nerdy side more and more, I’ve only come with you guys to a couple of conventions but I had fun, even got to meet some of mom’s friends from back in the day.”
Luz was flabbergasted “Mom’s a nerd?! Like a real actual nerd!”
“Yup a real actual nerd.”
“shes secretly been a nerd the whole time” Luz mutters to herself
“Where do you think you got it from?”
“Uh well… my dad”
“Him too, actually if you think these are crazy I have some pictures of the two of them that’ll blow your mind” Vee said excitedly
“Breakfast is ready!” Called mom
Making their way to the dining room Luz and Vee took their seats like nothing was different.
Luz noticed something as a half dozen pancakes were served “Mami, why’d you set the table for four?”
“Eda mentioned she’d be sending Amity by” mom looked at Luz expectantly but merely shook her head at Luz’s blank look, Vee smiled as well some secret between them about this amity person.
“Ok mama, can we start eating even without Amity?” Luz asked
“Of course Mija”
The digging in had only just commenced when they heard a knock okay the door
“Luz could you get the door?” Her mom asked clearly trying not to smile
“Ok mami” of course ask the amnesiac girl to do it Luz thought bitterly
No wait it’s probably just Amity and she wants me to meet them, what’s so special about this Amity person?
Luz came to the back door ready to open it, on the other side she saw the most beautiful person in the world
“Luz!” Amity said wrapping her arms around Luz “Eda said you accidentally got amnesia, it’s gonna be ok, I’m here now” she whispered, lilac locks brushing against Luz’s cheek, Amity releases her embrace “you’re warm, are you sure you should be out of bed?”
“Buh” say something “uh” anything “mu, mom made pancakes” that?? Why not I love you
She smiled brightly “Camila made pancakes! This trip was definitely worth it!” Amity slid past Luz heading to the dining room, but Luz just stood there, she’s pretty, purple hair cascading down framing those golden eyes.
Since when did I hang out with the cool kids?
Am I cool now?
“Hi Camila, thanks for having me over” Amity said, I’m assuming this is Amity
“Of course dear, your always welcome here Amity” mom says, I guess that answers that
“Hi Amity!” Vee greets brightly
Luz returns to the table following behind Amity
“Hey Vee how you been? I heard you finally met Masha’s parents.” Vee blushed, Oooooh it sounds like Vee is dating someone, juicy gossip! I’m all in!
“What! Who told you” Vee demands
Amity tilts her head towards, Me?!
“Luz!” Vee was blushing now
“Hey I don’t even remember what I had to eat last night let alone any gossiping I’ve been doing, I don’t even get why it’s embarrassing”
“It just..” Vee sputters “I don’t know it just is” she pouts “you have a girlfriend you know what I mean”
“Wait! I have a Girlfriend!” Luz shouts, she’s gotta be kidding right? “You’re joking right?” Sisters mess with each other like this don’t they?
“Nope” Amity says “I can confirm you do in fact have a girlfriend” Amity has that smile now too, that ‘I have a fun secret smile’ what is everyone hiding?
Mom was giggling “Mija I’m glad Eda says you’re eventually going to get your memories back but this is pretty funny.”
“Who am I dating? It’s not Clara is it, I hope it’s not, she’s the worst.”
“Ugh Luz don’t even compare me to her” Amity says with distain
Luz turns to look at her eyes wide “you?”
Amity smiles “sorry Batata but it’s too much fun watching you clueless” Batata? Sweet potato? That’s an adorable nickname! And she’s so amazingly gorgeous, How?!
One thought pierced Luz’s brain “Pretty” wait did I say that aloud?
Amity’s face bloomed a bright pink as she squeezed in on herself a half smile on pursed lips
Vee cackled “even without your memories you can still make Amity blush!”
Luz’s face was feeling warm too.
I was worried for a while there, that I’d learn all the terrible ways I messed up, but I have a new sister and friends and… a girlfriend, Luz was definitely blushing, I guess life’s not so bad
“How’d we meet?”
Amity curled up even more “I tried to have you dissected.
“wha.. What! Dissected?” Luz once again shouted
“Please Mija, lower your volume” Mom reminded
“How did we get from that to dating?”
Amity unwound herself a bit “Well Good Witch Azura helped”
“You’re a fan too?” A peer! A companion in the loving Azura club!
“Yup, we even dressed as Hecate and Azura one year for Halloween” Amity said recalling fond memories
“…you are literally the coolest person I’ve ever met Amity”
“I know” she preened
“Oh Titan you two are as insufferably cute together as always” Vee joked
Amity smiled “didn’t Luz and I catch you wrapped around Masha that one time?”
Vee looked away “that’s beside the point”
“Ok girls” mom said “everyone should probably finish their breakfast before it gets soggy”
That finally got the good natured teasing to stop and the clinks of forks to resume.

After Breakfast

“Now Luz tomorrow is Monday but since you literally don’t remember what you were taught last week I’ll call in sick for you, try to rest Mija and let me know when you start to remember things again.”
“Thank you Mami” it felt nice hugging her
“Hey Luz” Amity called “wanna watch the Hecate Trials? Since you’ve forgotten it”
“Wait the Hecate spin-off is real!” Luz said in shock
“Yeah, come on before Vee takes up the whole couch.” Amity motioned
“Yes my awesome girlfriend lets watch a movie together, is that weird?” Luz cringed
“Luz, sweet potato, I have literally heard you say those exact words before, you’re good.
Oh it looks like Vee beat us to the good spot.”
There lounging on the couch was a ginormous snake creature, With Arms! Snacking on.. potato chips.
“Wha uh what?” Luz asked dumbly
The creature turned to look at me and Vee’s voice came out “uh Luz what’s up… we forgot to tell you didn’t we?”
Amity looked between me and Vee??, she seemed to figure something out “oh by the way Luz, your sister is a basilisk.”
“You..” Luz looked frantic “are amazing, I can’t believe my sister’s a monster!”
“Rude” Vee said
“Oh sorry, I guess that was pretty mean”
Vee nodded
“Sorry, so does mom know?”
“Know what?” Camila Noceda asked walking into the room
“Uh that Vee is, you know” Luz gestures vaguely at her sister
Her mom narrowed her eyes… “Oh! I knew there was something I forgot to tell you, yes I know Vee is a basilisk.”
“Cool cool ok sure” I have a giant snake for a sister that’s actually really cool… but how
“I’ve still gotta call the school, do you two think you can handle explaining things to Luz?” Mom asked
“Sure mom” Vee the really cool basilisk answered
“Can do Camila” Amity my also really cool but otherwise human girlfriend said
“So, how’d, we meet?” Luz asked as she sat down opposite of Vee “was it a dark and stormy night when I found you, escaped and looking for a loving home” Luz set the dramatic stage
“No it was day time”
“Oh”
“And it was mom who found me”
“Ok but was I excited when I met you?”
Vee frowned “not really”
“What why”
Vee’s frown persisted “well you had been missing for a while and you were pretty surprised to see someone who looked exactly like you living your life.”
What? Wait I was missing?
The gears turned in Luz’s head “you’re a shapeshifter, that’s so cool, you’re so cool, how is my life so cool now!?… Wait no, Vee identity theft is bad!”
“Hey! You have explicitly told me that identity theft is fine if it’s for a good cause.” Vee said
“What I did?”
“Yeah” Vee said like it was the most obvious thing in the world
“Oh!” Amity said suddenly having a revelation “I didn’t even realize you used to be Way less ok with crime”
“Ooh” Vee replied like that sentence made sense
“Crime?” Luz said “Like true crime podcasts or..” Vee shook her head “oh don’t tell me I started shoplifting?”
Amity grimaced a little “Eh more like Treason.”
Treason! Did I actually help break Vee out of a government facility or something!?
“Theft” Amity continued “assault, aiding and abetting, trespassing, destruction of property, criminal mischief, operating a business without a license, vandalism, petty theft, destruction of historical property, stepping on grass, kidnapping, impersonation and smuggling.” Amity finished taking a deep breath
Luz’s mind was spinning, she’s a criminal, she’s done a.. a lot of crime!!! How?!?
“You just knew all that off the top of your head huh?” Vee said
Amity blushed “I may.. have a copy of Luz’s official criminal record”
“Wow” Vee said
“Hey don’t judge me, Luz and I read through it once for fun” Amity defended
“Okay” Vee responded, clearly still amused
“Am.. am I on the lam?!” Luz said distraught
“Oh no, we overthrew the government so all those old charges were dropped.” Amity said
“The US government!?”
“Ah uh no not the US government, we overthrew the Demon Realm government” Amity said
Oh so it’s just a game, she had me going there for a minute… is Vee a demon?
Luz looks to Vee “is the Demon Realm a real place?”
Instead Amity answered “Yup, it’s where we fell in love and where me and nearly all my friends and family are from.”
Amity my ‘Human’ girlfriend, who is apparently from the demon realm? Human
Amity seemed to see though to what Luz was thinking, she combed a hand through her long lilac hair revealing a pointed ear.
Luz slid out of her chair to the floor covering a blush “what is my life?”
“Amazing?” Vee offered
“Yes thank you Vee, my life is amazing, I sure wish I could remember it!” Luz lay flat on the floor, before rocketing upright “Eda’s a Demon Right!”
“Witch actually” Amity corrected “you’re her apprentice.”
Luz’s eyes got wide “I’m learning Magic?!”
“Your technique could use some more work but I’d say you’ve definitely learned and continue to learn magic… speaking of where is Stringbean?” Amity asked
“Stringbean!” Vee called
“Who’s Stringbe- oh my!” A flying purple snake came rocketing towards Luz flying into her hands “you are so cute, who are you, are you my familiar?” Luz cooed caressing the levitating snake
“That’s Stringbean, your Palisman” Amity explained
“You are the Cutest little snake ever” Luz continued, not really listening
“Yeah should’ve expected this” Vee said
“Huh” Luz said “oh right, Magic! How’s that work?” She asked still petting the purple palisman
“I’m not going to explain a whole education’s worth of magic but I could show you some spells” Amity offered
Luz practically had stars in her eyes “Yesssss”
“Ok this is the first spell you ever learned and the first spell I saw you cast” Amity said, she gives a twist of the wrist and with it a small purple circle forms, a moment later a small golden orb of light appears hovering in the air
“What does it do?”
“It’s a light spell”
“A ball of light?.. I guess that’s cool” Luz said slightly disappointed
“It seemed pretty cool to me at the time, I didn’t even know humans could use magic before I met you, although I hadn’t met any other humans before you.” Amity explained
“I can’t wait to see it.. er remember it.” Luz blushed
“We can go to the Demon Realm later if you want?” Amity said
“Yes!!!” Luz said quickly “wait why can’t we go right now?”
“We were gonna watch something” Vee gestured to the TV
“Oh! Right Azura!” As Luz went to grab the TV remote she noticed the ball of light again “can you..uh unsummon that?”
“I’ll handle it” Vee said opening her mouth wide
“Wha” Luz started to ask
Vee inhales deeply, the mote of light disintegrating to be absorbed by Luz’s new sister.
“Huh…” Luz said
“Tasty” Vee said with a grin “did you do something special with that light spell?” Vee asked
Amity blushed “maybe.. But! We’ll never know since you ate it.”
“You were thinking about Luz weren’t you?”
Amity’s face glowed bright pink answering for her
“You can show me later” Luz consoled “Because it’s Azura time!!”
The girls hung out chatting and watching new old television well into the evening, and Luz wasn’t feeling so lost and confused anymore.
“And so dad tried to salvage it” Vee was already giggling at Luz’s story having already heard it “but the pizza crust was completely solid, it was practically eating charcoal”
“Wait it was burnt that bad and you still ate it?” Amity asked incredulously
“Yeah I wasn’t gonna let it go to waste, especially since dad went to so much effort to use lactose free cheese, that and I really wanted pizza.”
“Wow, I knew you had an iron stomach Luz but eating charcoal” Amity said in disbelief
“Yeah, I’m lucky I didn’t get too sick during those first few days of Eda trying to feed me.” Luz said
“Wait Luz! You’re starting to remember!” Vee said excitedly
“Oh! Yeah! I am” Luz scrunched up her face in concentration “nope” she looked at amity “still don’t remember our first kiss.”
“That’s what you were trying to remember?” Amity asked
Luz blushed scratching the back of her head “yeah.. I still can’t believe you’re my cool witch girlfriend”
“Hmm., Let me remind you” Amity pulled Luz in, Luz blushing in return but not stopping, lips met and sparks flew
“Wowza” Luz said, the word leaving her mouth before she could think of something better “I can’t believe I just said wowza” Luz said distraught
“Better than crikey” Vee said teasingly
“Wait what do you mean?” Luz asked
Vee just cackled in response
Luz was oblivious to Amity smiling at her, it’s nice to know that Luz is still Luz amity thought.
“What’s going on?” Camila asked coming to investigate the ruckus
“I’m starting to remember!” Luz triumphantly stated

A Week Later

“Ok and where did you take me on our third date in the Human Realm?” Amity asked
Luz and Amity sat on the couch in the Owl House
“Easy I took you to the Gravesfield spring flower festival, I’m telling you I remember everything, well every you can reasonably expect me to remember.” Luz answered
“Ok Luz”
“Are you just being nostalgic on me Blight?”
“Maybe”
“There is something I remember from last week that I wanted to bring up” Luz said
Amity furrowed her brow
“You never showed me that special light spell”
Amity blushed but only slightly, Amity Blight had been building up a resistance to the power of Luz over many years at this point but her strength only went so far.
“Ah yes that” Amity said looking away “uh, I guess I could show you, But only if you really want to see it.”
Luz’s smile was unwavering
Amity sighed “ok here you go” with a small spell circle Amity summoned a small ball of light, indistinguishable from any other cast by witch or glyph
“So what’s different about it?” Luz’s smile asked pondering the orb, looking at it from all directions.
Amity didn’t answer, looking away, blush still plastered on her face
Luz observed the orb top to bottom before deciding to poke it
Popping like a soap bubble, the light disintegrated not into motes but small cartoon hearts
“I know it’s cheesy” Amity started
“Aw Amity! This is so cool, and you came up with it?” Luz said with pure admiration
“Uh yeah, I’ve been trying out illusions magic and creating my own spells and.. I know it’s not much.” Amity trailed off
“You’ve gotta teach me that spell!” Luz said excitedly
“Have I ever told you I love you Luz” Amity asked staring lovingly at Luz
“Only 4’639 times” Luz replied
“Wait you actually counted?”
“Nope I made it up!” Luz grinned
Amity burst out laughing “of course you did Luz.” Amity pulled her into a kiss, it certainly was a memorable one.
