Chapter Text
The grass is soft beneath Yahaba's feet as he scouts the park, eyes narrowed dramatically. "For fuck's sake, Shigeru. Just pick a place." His boyfriend's voice is gruff, laced with fondness that only Yahaba knows him enough to recognize. He smiles, his eyes meeting Kyoutani's amber ones. "I just want it to be perfect." He grins when Kyoutani flushes, dipping his head. He'll never be able to get over how adorable his boyfriend is, prone to blushing at the slightest provocation. He cuts his boyfriend some slack, continuing his avid search for the perfect picnic spot.
"Here!" He announces triumphantly, looking around for his boyfriend. He finds him, halfway across the grass area, settled in a crouch as he pets one of the many dogs in the park. The dog seems to love him, as most animals do, and Shigeru can't resist the urge to take a photo. The zoom-in on his camera doesn't do this scene justice, but it's good enough. More than good enough, Yahaba decides, when he looks back on the picture. The wrinkle in his nose that Yahaba loves to smooth down with his fingers, and the gentle swoop of the eyeliner that Yahaba loves him with and without. He has been spotted, though, and Kentarou looks severely suspicious when he finally reaches the spot that Shigeru has deemed good enough for their picnic date.
"What's got you lookin' so happy?" He grumbles, sitting down with crossed legs on the blanket Shigeru has spread out.
"What, I'm not allowed to look happy on a date with the man I love?" Yahaba scoffs. "You underestimate my adoration for you, my dear."
Kyoutani's face twists, but the red that settles on his cheeks gives him away. Shigeru's smile is satisfied as he settles beside his boyfriend, reach a hand over to comb his fingers through the other man's short hair. Kentarou, the big, soft puppy that he is, leans into the touch with a soft, barely audible exhale that makes a grin split across Yahaba's face. "You're so cute, y'know." Something about today, the romance of it, makes Yahaba more desperate than usual to shovel affection onto Kyoutani, simply bury him in it until he's gasping for air. "We'd better eat this food before the sun goes down," Yahaba murmurs into Kyoutani's temple, where he's currently pressing soft, chaste kisses.
"Why?"
"Because you were too stubborn to get a jacket, and I don't want you to whine about being cold when the sun sets."
"I don't fuckin' whine." Kentarou grumbles, crossing his arms as he watches Yahaba unpack the display of food. "And I run hot. I don't need a jacket."
"We'll see if you're still saying that in an hour when the sun goes down." Shigeru laughs at his boyfriend's petulant face, pressing a kiss to his nose. Kyoutani catches him by the collar when he leans back, pressing their mouths together in a soft, all-encompassing kiss. Yahaba indulges his wants, reaching up to cup Kentarou's face gently. When they break apart, Kyoutani looks anywhere but at him, and Shigeru lets him because he knows it's out of desperation to his blush. He plates some of his own food up, and when Kyoutani is composed, he does the same.
"Thank you, too." Kentarou murmurs in between bites. "I forgot to say that."
"Ever the gentleman, Ken." Yahaba smiles. "And don't thank me, thank Osamu-san. He's the one who put this all together. I just bought it."
"I can never understand how you two know each other." Kentarou shakes his head. "You know too many fucking people." Yahaba laughs. "Well, it's my likability that got the food for this date."
Kyoutani smiles, the soft curve of teeth beautiful in the light of the lantern that Yahaba had set out. "You are pretty likeable, I guess." Yahaba scoffs. "You guess?" Kyoutani shrugs, purposely ignoring the question, but Shigeru refuses to be deterred. "Well, if you guess you like me, then I guess I like you too." He bumps his shoulder into Kentarou's. The bleached blonde shrugs, tips of his ears turning pink. "Thanks. I guess you could say I love you, too." Kentarou has a knack for making Shigeru smile like nobody else, and Yahaba doesn't think he even knows it. "Yeah?" He murmurs, and Kentarou's reluctant nod warms his heart. He's heard it a million times, and said it a million times, just as the other man has, but it still gets him every time. His heart thuds at the sight of Kyoutani being just as affected by it as he is, even now.
They talk for what seems like both forever and only an instant, until darkness fully falls and their talk dwindles. They just sit, happy to be with each other. After a few minutes, the silence of the night wears off, and Yahaba is ready to go. It's getting chilly, even with his coat on, but just as he is about to stand, Kentarou manages to stop his heart another time. His rough and tough, always ready to brawl boyfriend shuffles across the blanket, tucking himself into Yahaba's side with a soft grunt. Shigeru wraps his arm around Kyoutani, rubbing a hand up and down the other man's bicep.
"Cold?" Yahaba grins teasingly, but Kyoutani just grunts, ever stubborn. Shigeru doesn't push him anymore, stretching out on his back on the blanket that is not quite big enough for two men of their size to lay down, but lay down he does. Kentarou falls with him, crushing him for a brief moment before Shigeru adjusts them. The nighttime chill seeps away relatively quickly after that, because, despite Kentarou feeling freezing, he is outwardly a human heater.
Yahaba dozes a bit, he admits, but so does Kyoutani. Laying here, with the man he loves, makes him more content than he's been in a while, and he just relaxes. Just lets himself soak it in.
Because, really, what's better than this?
