“Danny, that was awesome!” Sam said, excitedly as she watched the boy drop down in front of her.
A flash of light came over him as he let go of his transformation, returning back to his human form. He looked up to see his best friend smiling brightly at him as she held out her arms, clearly inviting him into a hug.
Normally, Danny would be more than happy to accept her invitation. Instead, he turned away from her as fresh tears stung the corners of his eyes. The mere sight of her made his chest ache and his heart thump loudly in his ears.
Sam brought her arms down, her smile fading as she furrowed her eyebrows in concern. “Danny?” She walked up to him and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. Her concern for him deepened as she could feel him trembling beneath her touch. “What’s wrong?”
He closed his eyes as a few tears slid down his cheeks. “I…I don’t know…” He said, his voice cracking. He sniffled, taking in a shaky breath as he finally turned around to look at her. “All I know is that…my heart hurts.”
Her violet eyes widened in realization. “Oh…oh, Danny,” she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a hug. “I’m so sorry.”
Danny hugged her back, wrapping his arms around her midriff. He rested his head on her shoulder, letting his body relax against her. “It’s not your fault, Sam,” he said, his voice quiet. “There’s no need to be sorry.”
Sam squeezed him a bit harder as she rubbed calming circles on his back. “I still hurt you,” she said, pressing her face against his. “And for that, I’m sorry.”
He pulled back to look at her, but kept his arms wrapped around her. “No, if anyone should be sorry, it’s me,” he looked away as his cheeks turned a deeper shade of red. “God, this is so embarrassing.”
She brought one of her hands up to cup his face. “What is?” She asked, rubbing her thumb against his soft, wet cheek.
He sniffled loudly, trying to keep the snot from leaving his nose. “I hate crying in front of people,” he said, a watery smile on his face. “But especially you and Tucker.”
“Hey, don’t worry about that,” Sam moved her hand up, using her thumb to wipe the tears from his eye. “Isn’t that what best friends are for? To be a shoulder to cry on?”
Danny laughed at little, letting himself lean into her touch. “Hmm, I guess so. It’s still humiliating though,” he said, laughing a little. “Thanks, Sam.”
She leaned forward a little and kissed him gently on the nose. “Don’t mention it,” her eyes shifted to avoid his gaze as she felt the heat rising to her own cheeks. “And, hey, just so you know…”
“Yeah?” He asked, looking at her curiously as his heart pounded in anticipation.
She swallowed hard as his bright, blue eyes stared back at her. How can Danny still look so cute even when his face is all puffy? She thought to herself before clearing her throat. “There’s someone else that I’d much rather kiss than Dash.”
Danny’s eyes widened, his lips pursed together as he looked at her in surprise. “Oh yeah? Who?” He asked, the heat already prickling his skin.
Sam shut her eyes tightly. The heat from her blush spread throughout her entire body, setting her skin ablaze as her heart pounded in her ears. With a deep breath, she leaned forward and softly pressed her lips against his.
The kiss lasted only a second, maybe two, before they both jumped back. Bewildered blue eyes stared back at her as he brought his fingers to his lips.
“Um, wow, I…did NOT mean to do that,” she said, sheepishly, looking away as her cheeks still burned bright red. “Sorry.”
To her surprise, Danny reached for her hand. His skin felt soft against hers as he began playing with her fingers. “No, don’t be, that was awesome,” he said, a bright smile now adorning his face. “Can we…um…do it again?” He nervously rubbed the back of his neck.
She smiled back at him. “I wouldn’t mind that,” she said, twirling a lock of her hair.
The two leaned in once again, their lips closing in on each other…and then-
“Hey, guys- AH!”
They both jumped back, their bodies turning towards the sudden voice that had entered the room.
Tucker looked back and forth between his friends, eyebrows raised in suspicion. “Do I need to go back out there and sing again? Because clearly Ember’s spell hasn’t fully worn off yet,” he asked, picking up a microphone.
“NO!” Danny and Sam yelled out in unison.
“Aww, well, okay,” Tucker crossed his arms, pouting. “But if I see you two being weird on the way home, don’t be surprised if I start belting Hilary Duff.”
“Please don’t,” Sam said, making a gagging noise. Danny laughed, much to Tucker’s dismay.
Sam and Danny made sure to walk a few feet behind Tucker as the trio began walking back home. It wasn’t so that they could hold hands without him noticing, nope, not at all.
They’d let him keep thinking it was due to ghostly influence for as long as they could.
