ACT 1: H λ L F – L I F E 1

SCENE 1: Anomalous Materials Labs: Airlock

The scene begins with Gordon Freeman, a scientist wearing a lab coat with brown hair, glasses and a goatee, in an airlock. There’s a window with a security guard wearing a bullet proof vest with the Black Mesa logo on it, as well as a blue shirt and tie and helmet, taking control of the door controls. The guard looks up at Gordon.

Guard: Aw, man. You cut the ponytail. (Under breath) Sellout...

Gordon: Yeah, yeah, just let me through, will you? I’m running late.

Guard: Alright.

The guard presses some buttons on a panel unseen from the audience. The door hisses and whirrs open.

Guard: By the way, they were having some problems down in the test chamber. I think they sorted that out, but I’d make haste. They told me to tell you to make sure you got down there as soon as you got into your hazard suit.

Gordon: That old hump of metal? It’s so heavy though!

Guard: Well, unless you want to die of radiation poisoning, I’d recommend wearing it. Now, scram. You’re late enough as is.

Gordon: Alright...

SCENE 2: Anomalous Materials Labs: Changing rooms.

Gordon walks in as a scientist presses a panel that opens the small pod on the left of the stage. That the hazard suit is in. The scientist turns around.

Scientist: Ah! Hello Dr. Freeman! You’re just in time.

Gordon: You got the suit ready for me?

Scientist: Yup! Brand new H.E.V suit.

Gordon looks at the suit in the pod, confused. The suit has no helmet.

Gordon: So...is the rest of the suit somewhere else?

Scientist: Hm? Oh, no. This is it.

Gordon: Not including the...

Scientist: Including what?

Gordon: Where’s the helmet?

Scientist: Oh! It doesn’t have one.

Gordon: You’re telling me the suit we designed to survive in otherwise unsurvivable situations protects every part of the body apart from the one that came up with the idea in the first place?

Scientist: Don’t worry, Gordon. It’s completely safe.

Gordon: No... That’s, like, 90% safe at most.

Scientist: You’re acting like you’ve never seen one before.

Gordon: Black Mesa has rivers of radioactive acid. Everywhere. Later, I’ll be working with something called an Anti-Mass spectrometer. Both things have one thing in common, and it's neither of which I want to get anywhere near my head.

Scientist: Gordon-

Gordon: It’s called the...Hazardous... EnViroment- who came up with that?

Scientist: I voted against it.

Gordon: If I rode a motorcycle wearing only that suit, I’d be breaking the law in 20 states, and you want me to wear that into a room where we shoot poorly aimed lasers at a rock to try to tear open the fabric of reality.

Scientist: Gordon, please. We’re the top research facility in the country; we know how to use safety equipment.

Gordon huffs

Gordon: Fine.

Gordon walks towards the pod and puts the boots on, then the knee and shin pads, then the chest plate, then the gloves.

H.E.V. Suit Voice: Welcome to the H.E.V, Mark 4. Protective system. For use in Hazardous environment conditions.

Scientist: There we are! Now you're properly suited for the experiment.

Gordon: If I die from brain cancer today, it’s your fault.

Gordon walks off the stage and exits the stage left.

SCENE 3: Anomalous Materials Labs: Test Chamber observation room.

Lights are only on the left side of the stage. Gordon enters stage left and is greeted by 3 scientists, one of whom is Dr. Issac Kleiner, an old bald man with glasses and a lab coat.

Kleiner: Ah! Gordon! There you are! We’ve just sent the sample down to the test chamber.

Scientist 2: We’ve boosted the Anti-Mass spectrometer to 105%.

Gordon: My, God! Is that why systems are failing? Because it’s all being used here?

Scientist 3: (bored) Bit of a gamble, sure, but we need the extra resolution.

Kleiner: The administrator is extremely concerned we get a conclusive analysis on today’s sample. I gather they went through some length to get it.

Scientist 3: (bored) They’re waiting for you, Gordon. In the test chamber.

Kleiner: Right! Come on, I’ll walk you down!

Kleiner walks to the right side of the room, and henceforth, the middle of the stage, In front of a door. He types in a code and the door opens. Gordon follows as Kleiner goes through the door. Lights shift from the left side to the right side.

Kleiner: Eli has been busy making some last-minute preparations for the new experiment. Although he’s been acting-

Dr. Eli Vance, a black man with dark, brown hair also wearing a lab coat walks in from stage right.

Eli: Izzy!

Kleiner: Ah! Eli! There you are! Look who just arrived!

Eli: Gordon! I’m glad you’re here. These last-minute changes...there’s just something-

A large computer with beeping lights behind them, visible to the audience. sparks and short-circuits.

Eli: (Running to the computer along with Gordon and Kleiner) Ah! It’s about to go critical!

Eli fiddles with some of the buttons on the computer.

Kleiner: What the hell is going on with our equipment?

Eli: (Panicked) It was never meant to do this in the first place!

Kleiner turns to look at Gordon.

Kleiner: You run along now, Gordon. I'm sure you know the way.

Kleiner turns away from Gordon. Gordon walks off the stage right.

SCENE 4: Anomalous Materials Labs: Anti-Mass Spectrometer/Test Chamber.

Gordon walks on stage left into an airlock, in a similar environment to the last scene; the lights are only set on one side of the stage. There are 2 scientists in the airlock with him.

Scientist 1: I’m afraid we’ll be deviating a bit from standard analysis procedures today, Gordon.

Scientist 2: Yes, but with good reason. This is a rare opportunity for us.

Gordon: Why? We do tests like this literally every other week.

Scientist 2: This is the purest sample we’ve seen yet.

Scientist 1: And, potentially, the most unstable!

Scientist 2: Now, Now, if you follow standard insertion procedures, everything will be fine.

Scientist 1: How can you say that!? Although the possibility of a Resonance Cascade scenario is extremely unlikely, I just don’t feel comfo-

Scientist 2: Gordon doesn’t need to hear all this; he’s a highly trained professional. We’ve assured the administrator that nothing will go wrong.

Scientist 1: Ah...yes, you’re right. Gordon, we have complete confidence in you.

Scientist 2: Well, go ahead. Let's let him in now.

Both scientists walk in front of two retinal scanners, visible to the audience. The lights in the next room, a large, orange, barrel-shaped room with what looks like big, metal claws in the middle. (Look up anti-mass spectrometer for reference). The lights in the airlock haven’t turned off yet.

Gordon: Wait, what was that about a Resonance Cascade?

Scientist 1: Don’t worry about that, Gordon. The Probability Department has stated that the chance of one is astronomically small. Still, I’d be careful.

Scientist 2: Once this experiment is finished, we can get you out of that HEV suit and back to real work.

Scientist 1: Paperwork...lots and lots of paperwork.

Gordon: Alright, if you say so.

Gordon walks into the test chamber and the lights in the airlock turn off.

Gordon: 105%...wasn’t this thing designed to only handle 80?

Microphone feedback plays over the speakers. The scientists from the observation room apart from Kleiner speak.

Scientist 2: (Over Speakers) Testing...Testing

Scientist 2 clears his throat.

Scientist 2: Everything seems to be in order...

Scientist 3: (Over Speakers, Bored) Alright, Gordon. You should know the procedures by now. The specimen will be delivered in a few moments. If you could be so good as to start the rotors, we can bring the Anti-Mass Spectrometer to 80% and hold it there until the carrier arrives.

Gordon: Yeah, yeah, standard procedure.

Gordon goes over to a keypad on the wall and types in a code. The lights switch to an orange wash. A wiring noise plays as the rotors begin to spin.

Scientist 3: (Over Intercom, Bored) Very good...we’ll take it from here.

Scientist 2: (Over Intercom) Power to stage one emitters in 3...2...1...

Lights fade into a yellow wash.

Scientist 2: (Over Intercom) I’m seeing predictable phase arrays

3 Beats.

...Stage 2 emitters activating...now.

Scientist 3: (Over Intercom, Bored) Gordon, we cannot predict how long the system can operate at this level. Nor how long the reading will take; please work as quickly as you can.

Scientist 2: (Over Intercom) Overhead capacitors to one-oh-five percent.

Scientist 3: (Over Intercom, Bored) I’ve just been informed that the sample is ready, Gordon. It should be arriving at any moment now. Look to the delivery system for your specimen.

A hatch in the wall marked with hazard tape, parallel to the Anti-Mass Spectrometer in the middle of the room, opens, and a yellow rock on a cart comes out.

Gordon: Still not sure about the increased power.

Gordon goes behind the cart and pushes it into the beams. Immediately, sparks come out of the rock and alarms flair.

Gordon: AH! WHAT THE-

Scientist 2: (Over Intercom, panicked) AH! Gordon! Get away from the beam! Shut it down!

Scientist 3: (Over Intercom, panicked) Shutting down...NO!

Lights change into a green wash.

Scientist 2: (Over Intercom, panicked) Someone, get him out of there!

Scientist 3: (Over Intercom, panicked) Attempting shut down...it’s not- It's not shutting down! It’s not!

Scientist 2: (Over Intercom, panicked) AH!

Both scientists scream before a beam of electricity shoots through the observation room window, killing both scientists!

Gordon: WHAT IS GOING ON!? HOLY-

Another beam of electricity shoots out of the machine and hits Gordon.

Gordon: AAA-

Gordon’s scream is cut off as the stage lights turn off.

SCENE 5: Anomalous Materials Labs: Unforeseen Consequences.

Gordon wakes up on the floor, alarms blaring still, lights dim, the Anti-Mass spectrometer in ruins in front of him.

Gordon: Oh...my head...what the heck was that?

He pushes himself up. The doors to the airlock malfunctioned and are now open at a jagged angle. Gordon walks through the airlock doors. The two scientists that greeted Gordon in the airlock are now lying dead on the ground.

Gordon: (Looking at Scientist 1’s body) What was that about a Resonance Cascade?

Gordon goes over to the airlock door on the left-hand side of the stage, the one he used to get in.

Gordon: How am I gonna...

He looks over at the retinal scanner next to the door. He taps it.

Retinal Scanner Speaker: (Glitchy and fuzzy) A-A-ACCE-SSS- AUTHORISED PERSONNEL.

The scanner sparks, and the door whirrs open, stopping halfway.

Gordon: We really messed up...

Gordon crouches through the door.

SCENE 6: Anomalous Materials Labs: Observation room after cascade.

Gordon rides the elevator up and comes up to the room with the computer to see Dr. Kleiner on the floor and Eli consoling him.

Kleiner: Why didn’t they listen...

Eli: We tried to warn them...

Kleiner: I never thought I’d see a Resonance Cascade, let alone create one.

Gordon: Dr. Kleiner! Eli!

Kleiner looks up at Gordon.

Kleiner: My god! He’s alive!

Eli: Gordon! Oh, thank God for that hazard suit. I'm surprised it worked without a helmet.

Gordon: Me too...

Eli: Listen...all the phones are out. I can’t reach anyone in the facility! Get to the surface as soon as you can and let someone know we’re stranded down here! You’ll need me to activate the retinal scanner. I’m sure the rest of the science team will gladly help you.

Eli walks with Gordon to the door to the observation room.

Eli: And for God’s sake, keep that suit on until you’re in the clear!

Eli leans his eyes down to the retinal scanner next to the observation room door. It beeps and the door opens.

Eli: I’d come with you if I could, but I need to get Issac somewhere safe so I can look for my family.

Gordon: Got it.

Gordon goes through the observation room.

Eli: Be careful, Gordon!

Eli rushes back to Dr. Kleiner.

Gordon exits stage left.

SCENE 7: Anomalous Materials Labs: The Crowbar.

Gordon enters stage left and tries to open a locked door. The door has glass panels.

Gordon: Damn...

Gordon looks down and sees a toolbox with a crowbar lying next to it.

Gordon: This’ll have to work.

Gordon picks up the crowbar.

H.E.V. Suit Voice: Unidentified Maintenance Weapon Acquired.

Gordon smashes through the glass with the crowbar and climbs through the door. On the other side of the door, there is none other than the Scientist from the locker room, being chased by a headcrab.

Scientist: Freeman!

Gordon: Oh, hey. Greg, was it?

Gordon smashes the headcrab with the Crowbar.

Scientist: ...No?

Gordon: Let me ask you something.

Gordon picks up the headcrab corpse by its arm.

Gordon: What is this?

Scientist: I really don’t know.

Gordon: If you had to name it, what would it be?

Scientist: It... It looks like a crab.

Gordon: Crab...ok, I see the resemblance. What else?

Scientist: A... (sigh) a headcrab.

Gordon: Huh, what was that?

Scientist: A Headcrab!

Gordon: Headcrab. Why do you think it’s called that.

Scientist: Because it attacks your hea-

Gordon: Because it attacks your FREAKING head!

Gordon chucks the headcrab corpse at the scientist. The scientist recoils.

Gordon: And do you know what might stop it from attacking your head?

Scientist: A helmet.

Gordon: A helmet! That’s right!

Scientist: In fairness, we didn’t know this would happen!

Gordon: What happened to “Preparing for the worst”?

Beat

Gordon: That’s what I thought.

Gordon walks off stage right

SCENE 9: Anomalous Materials Labs: 9mm Pistol.

Gordon walks on stage right, crowbar in hand. Same setup as before: Wall with a door in the middle of the room. There is a guard slumped up against the wall, lying in his own pool of blood.

Gordon: Holy-... what the hell happened here?

The guard shakily points behind Gordon at a scientist's corpse with a headcrab latched onto its face.

Guard: There’s your answer...listen, Mr. Freeman, sir. I’m...never gonna make it. These...things. They put up a good fight...

The guard pushes his 9mm Pistol towards Gordon.

Guard: Take it...put her to good use...

Gordon picks up the pistol.

H.E.V.: 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun, acquired.

Gordon: Thanks...

Gordon walks past the guard through the door. On the other side, there are what looks to be a scientist with a bloody chest and a headcrab latched onto their face; a zombie. The zombie was groaning. The Zombie stumbled towards Gordon.

Gordon: Sir?

The Zombie lashes out at Gordon.

Gordon: AH!

Gordon points the pistol at the zombie and fires 3 shots at its head. The gun nozzle sparks and flashes, and a bang sound is heard each time. The zombie bleeds green blood and falls over, dead.

Gordon: What the heck are these things...

Gordon walks off the stage left.

SCENE 10: Office Complex: Beginning

Gordon walks on stage left, gun strapped to his hip and Crowbar in hand. A red door in front of him has two scientists behind it. Gordon approaches his side of the door. One scientist warily approaches their side of the door.

Scientist 1: (Nervous) Hello...?

A ceiling tile behind them collapses, and a headcrab falls controlled by a puppeteer not seen by on-stage characters. Both scientists turn around in fear. The headcrab latches onto the scientist's head. Puppeteers leave stage

Gordon: OH GOD!

Scientist 1: (Muffled, strangled screaming)

Scientist 2 runs to the corner of the room.

Gordon: Right, stand back!

Gordon lifts his crowbar and smashes the door open just as the scientist crumples to the floor.

Gordon: Sir?

The scientist shakily stands up, blood dripping from inside where the headcrab has latched onto his head, groaning like a Zombie.

Gordon: AH!

Gordon beats the Zombified scientist down with the crowbar. The zombie falls over again, actually dead this time.

Scientist 2: Gordon?

Gordon looks up at the scientist.

Scientist 2: Oh, Gordon! If I had known it was you, I would have let you in.

Gordon: What are you still doing down here? Everyone is heading to the surface.

Scientist 2: I think they’re crazy not to stay put.

Gordon gives him an incredulous look.

Scientist 2: Black Mesa is government-funded. They’re bound to notice and send someone to rescue us. I’m not gonna miss the rescue team. I'm staying here.

Gordon groans and facepalms.

Gordon: Ok, stay here then.

Gordon turns around and walks back through the door he came in from and turns left to walk off the back of the stage.

SCENE 11: Office Complex: Shotgun.

Gordon smashes through some boxes on the left side of the stage and comes through a door in the middle of the stage and comes out in a tunnel. There is an open chest, colored green with a SPAS-12 shotgun and a box of 12-gauge shells next to it.

Gordon: I’ve struck gold!

Gordon runs over to the chest and picks up the shotgun

H.E.V.: 12-gauge SPAS-12 tactical shotgun, acquired.

A guard walks in from stage right.

Guard: Hey!

Gordon looks up at the guard.

Guard: One of those little buggers latched onto my buddy. We gotta get that thing off him before-

Footsteps come from where he walked on from. The guard looks in that direction. The guard looks back at Gordon, unaware that the footsteps were a zombie guard. The Zombie stumbles onto the stage

Guard: Well, good news! Help just arrived!

The zombie attacks the guard from behind.

Guard: Ah! What the-

The guard turns around to see the Zombie and steps back. He begins firing at the Zombie from his 9mm pistol. Gordon steps in and fires 2 shots from his shotgun. The zombie falls over dead. The guard is panting.

Guard: (Exasperated) Thanks...I owe you one.

Gordon: Don’t mention it. You wanna come with me? I’m heading to the surface.

Guard: Yeah, we might stand a better chance if we team up.

Gordon: Then let's get the hell out of here.

Guard: Roger that, let's run like hell.

Gordon and the guard walk through the door in the middle of the stage and exit stage left.

SCENE 12: Office Complex: Locked from the other side.

Gordon and the guard enter stage right. Gordon, with his pistol holstered on his belt, shotgun strapped around his back and crowbar in hand.

Gordon: (To the guard) Hey, I never asked. What’s your name?

Guard: Oh, it’s Barney. Barney Calhoun.

Gordon: Gordon. Gordon Freeman.

Barney: So, you’re the guy everyone was talkin’ about before the experiment. Nice to meet you.

Gordon: Yeah, I-

Gordon and the guard reach the door in the middle of the stage. Locked from the other side.

Gordon: Shoot, I can’t get this open.

Barney: That door is locked from the other side, Gordon. It ain’t gonna budge.

Gordon: Which genius decided to put a door that can only be opened on one side IN AN OFFICE COMPLEX!? (Under breath) I bet it was Greg...

Barney: Who’s Greg?

Gordon: A sorry excuse for a scientist who said that H.E.V. suits don’t need helmets.

Barney: Aren’t there, like, rivers of radioactive acid here?

Gordon: That’s what I said! Look, we’re getting off topic. We need to find a way around. Look for an airduct, or something.

Gordon and Barney begin looking around the room, and after 5 beats, Barney finds a vent cover on the same wall as the door is on.

Barney: Hey! I found one!

Gordon: Oh, yes!

Gordon runs over to Barney.

Gordon: Give me a boost.

Barney crouches down, and Gordon climbs onto his back. Gordon smashes the vent cover with the crowbar and climbs through. He can be seen by the audience coming out on the other side.

Gordon: What good is a vent if it doesn’t lead to fresh air or a ventilation unit? Does this even serve a purpose? Damn you, Greg!

Gordon drops down from the vent and pushes the door open.

Gordon: C’mon. Fatal flaws with the infrastructure of this place aside, we need to keep moving.

Barney walks through the door, just as 2 headcrabs drop down, again controlled by puppeteers. This will be how the headcrabs will move from now on unless stated otherwise.

Barney: Oh! Jesus!

Barney shoots one headcrab twice, killing it while Gordon smashes the other with his crowbar.

Barney: Freaking headhumpers!

Gordon: I guess that’s pretty accurate about what they do.

Gordon and Barney both run off the stage left.

SCENE 13: Office Complex: Secure Access Transmission.

Gordon and Barney walk on stage left. The right side of the stage features a staircase that leads off the back of the stage. Unseen to the audience, behind the stairs is another one going back down that leads backstage. Also on the right side of the stage is a Scientist fiddling with a radio. Gordon and Barney fight off some Zombies before going through the door in the middle of the stage.

Gordon: Sir!

Scientist: Freeman!

Gordon and Barney head through the door to greet the scientist.

Barney: You alright, sir?

Scientist: Yeah, I’m fine. I just overheard a secure access transmission. Soldiers have arrived, and they're coming to rescue us!

Gordon gasps and smiles. Barney, on the other hand, looks worried.

Barney: That’s if we live long enough to greet them.

Gordon: This is great! Now we don’t need to go all the way to the surface for rescue!

Barney: Don’t count on it! I doubt the cavalry will find us all the way down here! We still need to head to the surface!

Scientist: But...the elevators are out of order!

Barney: We can still climb.

Barney walks up the staircase. Gordon looks at the scientist, gives a nervous shrug and runs after Barney.

Scientist: Wait!

Both Gordon and Barney stop and look back at the scientist.

Scientist: Just in case I don't meet the rescue team, could I come with?

Gordon and Barney look at each other before looking back at the scientist.

Gordon: Sure, why not? What's your name?

The Scientist breathes a sigh of relief.

Scientist: Laszlo.

The scientist runs after Gordon and Barney, who resume walking up the stairs, then down backstage. The staircase is removed from the stage by the backstage crew.

SCENE 14: We've got hostiles: Open the silo doors.

Gordon, Barney and Laszlo exit an elevator on stage left to see a scientist in the other room banging on the big red silo doors. After 3 beats, the scientist looks towards the security camera.

Scientist: (Panicked) For God's sake! If anyone's there, open the silo doors! They're coming for us! It's our only way out!

Upon a beat of no response, the scientist runs off stage right while shouting:

Scientist: (Panicked) Oh my god! We're doomed!

Immediately after he finishes talking and runs off stage, an explosion can be heard and prop human guts are thrown from where he ran off.

Barney: Holy shit!

Gordon: Yeah, uhm...watch out for claymores...

Laszlo: I'm gonna be sick...

Gordon: Get it over with, we need to get a move.

Laszlo goes over to a trash can and vomits into it.

Barney: Oh...Jesus...

Gordon: Come on!

Barney and Gordon go through the door in the middle of the stage, cautiously stepping over the guts and blood before walking off stage right. Laszlo follows behind.

SCENE 15: Osprey

Corporal Adrian Shephard sits in an Osprey in the middle of the stage. The audience sees in from the back of the Osprey. He has a gas mask on his face, and is wearing a helmet, Kevlar, and camouflage clothes. He is surrounded by his fellow marines, with the commander standing up. There is another Osprey that can be seen next to the one we're looking into. Unintelligible radio chatter can be heard. After 10 seconds of radio chatter, it stops. The marine in front of him speaks up

Marine 1: Hey, where are we, anyway?

The marine next to him speaks up.

Marine 2: Well, the pilot thought we were headed to your mother's house. Heh. So far, this all looks pretty familiar. Marine 1 sighs

Marine 1: Real funny, Jack.

Marine 2: (Smugly) Any time, anywhere!

4 beats.

Marine 1: Hey, you smell that?

Marine 2: Smell what?

Marine 1: Smells like...like another babysittin' job to me, man.

Marine 2: (laughing) No shit, man.

A marine sitting next to Adrian speaks up

Marine 3: Babysitting job, my ass! This has training mission written all over it! Why else would they have kept our orders from us for so long, eh?

Marine 1: Yeah...what's that all about? Hauling our asses into this hunk of junk and not telling us what we're goin' in for!

Commander: Do you have a problem, Private!?

Marine 1 stiffens up and looks up at the commander.

Commander: I will give you your orders once we reach the LZ! You got that, soldier?!

Marine 1: Sir, yes, sir!

Marine 2: I don't really care what we're goin' in for as long as I get to kill me somethin'

Radio Chatter 1: Anyone got a good view of the LZ yet?

Radio Chatter 2: Negative.

Marine 1: Man, if this is another search and rescue operation, I'm gonna be pissed.

Marine 3: Yeah, I'm gonna be pretty pissed if I have to "search and rescue" your sorry ass!

Audio chatter resumes for one beat, then stops. A giant manta ray-looking alien flies over the Osprey next to the one we're looking into.

Commander: Okay, listen up, people! We have an extremely hostile situation on our hands-

The manta ray shoots a laser down at the other Osprey and makes it explode.

Adrian: Holy shit!

Marine 2: Goose-3 down! Goose-3 down!

Radio chatter: What the hell is going on down there!?

Another manta ray flies over the Osprey we're looking into.

Commander: Alright, listen up! Your mission is to-

The manta ray shoots a laser at the wing of the Osprey. The Osprey's wing explodes.

Commander: SHIT!

The commander falls out.

Commander: GOD DAMNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT

The other wing explodes.

Adrian: WHAT THE FUCK-

The other marines get out of their seat in panic just as the main Osprey body explodes. Lights shut off over the stage.

Scene 16: "We've got Hostiles": First contact.

Gordon, Barney and Laszlo walk in stage left. Gordon wields his crowbar. A scientist is standing on the right side of the stage, pacing. Gordon, Barney and Laszlo walk to the door in the middle of the stage. Gordon looks through the glass of the door just as a marine with an automatic machine gun walks on stage right. The gun has a weapon strap. The scientist looks up at the marine.

Scientist: Rescued, at last! Thank god you're here!

The marine points his gun at the scientist.

Scientist: Wait, NO-

The marine shoots the scientist, and the scientist falls over, dead. The marine looks down at the scientist's body, then looks up at Gordon through the glass of the door. The marine lifts his gun and begins shooting at Gordon.

Gordon: Shit!

Gordon, Barney and Laszlo get behind the cover of the wall. The marine kicks the door down and turns to shoot at them. Gordon, panicked, drops his crowbar, unholsters the shotgun and fires his shotgun 3 times into the marine's head. The marine falls backward, dead. Gordon holsters the shotgun.

Gordon: Holy...holy shit...they're...what?

Laszlo: I- I don't understand! Aren't they here to save us?

Barney: It appears not...

Barney leans over the marine's body and picks up his automatic weapon. He turns to Gordon and holds out the weapon.

Barney: Here. Take it.

Gordon takes the gun from Barney

H.E.V.: 9-millimetre fully automatic assault rifle acquired.

Gordon holsters the weapon onto his back.

Barney: You leave us here.

Gordon: What? I can't just leave you here!

Laszlo: I second that!

Barney: You've got the Hazard suit. If anyone's capable of taking these guys on, it's you. We'll round up some weapons and find our own way out.

Gordon: But- !

Barney: Gordon, please. Do not worry. Besides, we're slowing you down.

Gordon: You sure?

Barney: Oh yeah.

Hesitantly, Gordon picks up the crowbar and steps through the door in the middle of the stage.

Barney: Oh, and Gordon?

Gordon turns around to look at Barney.

Barney: If I see ya on the surface, I'll buy ya a beer.

Gordon chuckles.

Gordon: I'll hold you to it.

Gordon salutes Barney and runs off of stage right.

Scene 17: Welcome to Black Mesa: Shephard's reawakening.

The middle door is absent in this scene. Adrian Shephard lies on the right side of the stage. On the left side, a scientist is preforming CPR on another marine, counting in time with him chest compressions.

Scientist: 1...2...3...

The scientist puts his ear next to the marine's chest. After a beat, he lifts his head back up and resumes CPR.

Scientist: 1...2...3...

The scientist puts his ear next to the marine's chest. After a beat, he lifts his head back up and resumes CPR. Adrian sits up and rubs his head. All of his equipment is still on him; his camo vest, gasmask, helmet and NVG goggles.

Scientist: 1...2...3...

The scientist puts his ear next to the marine's chest. After a beat, he stands up and looks up at Shephard.

Scientist: Oh. You're up. Corporal Shephard, is it?

Adrian:...Yeah...how did you know?

Scientist: I read the tag on you're uniform.

Adrian: The what?

Adrian looks down at his chest to see a name tag on his breast.

Adrian: Oh, god...damnit

Adrian rips the tag off as the scientist speaks.

Scientist: I'm glad to see my life saving efforts weren't in vain.

The scientist looks down at the marine he tried doing CPR on.

Scientist: I'm afraid I can't say the same for him.

Adrian: What happened...my head is fuzzy. I can't remember anything.

Scientist: I'm afraid you've been through a terrible accident. Most of you're friends didn't survive. The ones that did, they're being treated. We thought you soldiers were here to help, but it appears that we're all now in the same...situation.

Adrian: My head still hurts.

Scientist: There's a radio over by the crash sight. Maybe you can go down and call in for help.

Adrian: Do you have any ibuprofen?

Scientist: No. I don't.

Adrian: Seriously? What kind of doctor doesn't have medicine?!

Scientist: I'm not a doctor. That's just my title.

Adrian: You have a doctorate.

Scientist: Yes, but-

Adrian walks closer to the scientist as he speaks.

Adrian: You were doing CPR on that guy before.

Scientist: W- Well, um-

Adrian gets all up in his face.

Adrian: This really isn't looking good for you, dude.

Scientist: L- Look, I left your PCV down where the other soldiers are getting treated. If you go get it, I- I'll get you some Ibuprofen.

Adrian: Hm. Alright.

Adrian walks off stage right muttering:

Adrian: What doctor doesn't have pain killers.

The scientist looks at his wearily as he walks off.

Scene 18: Welcome To Black Mesa: PCV

The middle door is gone for this scene. In the middle of the stage lies 3 stretchers, each with marines lying on them, the one furthest to the left has a headcrab latched to his face, being treated by a scientist. On the right side of the stage, there's a table with a Vest resembling Kevlar with loads of dials, lights and the letters P.C.V written in big text on the front in green. On the left side of the stage, a scientist pokes at a headcrab in a cage with a metal rod. Adrian walks on stage left. he looks down at the scientist poking the headcrab.

Adrian: (Confused) Uhh...sir?

The scientist flinches and looks up at Adrian. His expression shifts from fear to relief.

Scientist 1: Oh, Shephard. It's you.

Adrian: What is that thing?

Scientist 1: I'm not sure. But it sure is fascinating.

The scientist goes back to poking the headcrab.

Scientist 1: Have you ever seen anything like it? These...crabs...can completely take over their hosts nervous system!

The scientist looks back up at Adrian with a giddy expression.

Scientist 1: Can you imagine what the next stage of mutation looks like?

Adrian looks up at the marine with the headcrab latched to his face.

Adrian: (Wearily) I'd...rather not.

The scientist looks disappointed and goes back to poking the headcrab while Adrian moves behind the stretchers to the PCV. He picks it up in both hands and puts it on by putting his head through the bottom.

P.C.V Automated Voice: (Deep, Low) Welcome to the Powered Combat Vest. For use in Hazardous Environmental Combat.#

Adrian: Good God, how do I turn that voice off? Right, now the Ibuprofen.

Adrian walks off stage left.

Scientist 1 looks up at the other Scientist

Scientist 1: Should we tell him we used all the painkillers?

Scientist 2: Let's not...I wouldn't get the marine upset.
