Work Text:
Sam had asked Grian to go to a party with him, at first he was skeptical because this doesn't seem like something Sam would do -- you know, inviting him to a party. Grian felt a sinking feeling in his stomach when he was asked by Sam if he wanted to go. The avian did not exactly know why his gut was telling him to do anything but go to the party with Sam, but this is rare! Sam including him, and having time alone with Sam? Without Taurtis? This seemed like a dream come true to the teen that had just begun having unwarranted thoughts about his close friend. If it was such a dream come true then why did it make the pit in his stomach grow? These were questions for a later date, Grian's concern at this moment could be dealt with after he answered this dire question.
"So, what's it gonna be Gree-on?"
There it is again, the mis-pronunciation of Grian's name, the name Sam has known since they were both very young -- the name that is constantly mis-pronounced. Grian had slowly become accustomed to the way his name rolled off of Sam's tongue, of course it was obnoxious, but over time it became almost addictive, watching Sam's expression every time he uttered the name, Grian.
"Gree-on!!!" Sam shouted.
Grian was pulled out of thought at the sudden change in volume, his eyes shot back up to make contact with Sam's dark brown eyes.
"Oh- Uh, yes! Of course! I would love to go, Sam!"
Sam flashed a graceful smile at Grian.
Sam hadn't walked away at this point yet, as soon as the smile had reached Grian's eyes, he had felt as if he was about to collapse. How was he feeling these types of feelings towards a man who almost ruined his life so many times? The same man who forced a rifle into his arms, the same man who stabbed his best friend, the same man who forced him to pretend to be someone he wasn't. oh. There it was, the realization, the reason he felt so uneasy going anywhere with Sam alone, of course, was all of the trouble he caused him; But who was he to admit that he had horrible anxious attachments? Grian knew it had to do with his parents in some way but now isn't the time to dwell on the bad. He's in the present, with Sam smiling at him with such content in his eyes, almost as if he knew what that damned smile did to him.
Sam eventually went back to having a neutral expression splayed across his face, he began shouting, looking in a completely different direction from Grian, actually looking in the direction of Taurtis's room.
"Hey Taurtis! Are you comin' to the party tonight?"
Taurtis didn't respond, he must have not heard Sam, I mean, Sam wasn't extraordinarily loud while attempting to converse across the house, so Sam walked over to his room to ask the question again.
Oh, so this wasn't just going to be Grian and Sam, Grian cannot believe how absolutely embarrassed he feels toward himself for even believing that he had the chance to go with Sam alone to an event, this was just great. Grian loves Taurtis, but he's not positive that he has the same feelings for him that he has for Sam. These feelings are extremely confusing, he's never felt them toward anyone before. Grian had only realized his bi-curiosity after the handful events that happened. He noticed because of Sam. Ugh! Why does he have to be thinking about this stupid rabbit boy as if he actually cares about him. He will never feel the same way, it just makes him feel ashamed of his feelings for this man, especially considering the fact that he is obviously very straight... Taurtis won't even let him and Sam be alone long enough to be able to talk through their feelings. Why can't Sam just like him, why can't Taurtis leave them alone, why can't everyone just-
Sam cuts off his thoughts, coming back to the room with Taurtis by his side.
"Oh, hey Taurtis." Grian exchanges a faulty grin to try and express just a little bit of compassion toward the boy.
"So what's the plan, Sam?" Grian questioned. Hoping that for some unexplained reason Taurtis who was literally right there wouldn't be going with them to the party.
Sam perked up and began to explain,
"So, we are gonna head out in about an hour to the party! You, Taurtis, and I are all going to go! Unfortunately, none of us have dates."
Grian began fidgeting at the thought of a date. At least Sam didn't have a real date because that would make him feel so much worse than he does already, he should just be grateful that he's getting to go anywhere at all. So why is he so anxious about the single mention of a date?
Sam noticed, he grabbed Grian's hands and looked him in the eyes.
"But it's okay! We don't need a date to have fun!! Right Taurtis?"
Taurtis was distracted, staring off into the distance before he heard his name.
"Oh, yea! totally, if anything we are all just bros on a date basically, right?"
Grian's thoughts began to run a million miles an hour, 'Bros on a date' that's what this is to him? This is a party, obviously there is no date happening between Taurtis and Sam. Grian feels like he's going to scream at just the idea of that. The thought of being completely forgotten by Sam just for him to hang out with his other bro.
Sam noticed the distress across Grian's face and stepped in,
"Hey, I mean we're all friends! If it bothers you that much for us to be on a pretend date then you can just tell us, Gree-on!"
Oh God, Sam has just the vaguely wrong idea.
"No!! Sam, I'm fine with it, I really don't mind, I think it would be so awesome."
Wow. nice save, Grian, now you're stuck on this fictional date with your two best friends. One of which has been extremely in the way for the past few weeks…
"Oh in that case, I suppose we should get ready. We have it all figured out now don't we, Gree-on?" He sneaks a wink at the avian as he exits and enters the bathroom to begin getting ready.
Grian and Taurtis just stare at each other, a look of complete, 'what the hell did he just do.' Taurtis breaks eye contact by backing away with a small giggle.
What could this possibly entail?
He just stood there for a moment processing the previous events. Why were they acting so weird? Could there ever be an explanation for this odd behavior?
Grian just went to his room to get ready, as he was getting ready he couldn't help but get his thoughts stuck on the way Sam had smiled at him, and the way Sam was talking about a date. Albeit, a fake date, including Taurtis. The most he could do was just get dressed and try and think about anything else other than Sam. This was so stupid why couldn't he have fallen for someone like Taurtis, scratch that, why couldn't he have just never found out he wasn't straight at all? It's so difficult to navigate homoromantic feelings like these. Ugh!
Grian looked down at his phone after a moment of laying in bed to get some extra thinking time in. Oh, it's already been over half an hour? He supposes the others are already by the door waiting for him by this point. He exits his room and takes a glance around. No one is out yet, He supposes he should just gather his friends himself.
He fetches each of the boys, both fully ready for the party, and takes them outside.
"Hey Gree-on! You're being quite frantic, what's the deal bud?"
Oh my God...Why does Sam keep pushing his buttons, first it was all this date stuff and now it's a stupid pet name. How was he supposed to manage all of this without making it painfully obvious how flustered he's getting. Apparently he's not hiding it well enough because Sam just stands there offering the smuggest grin of all time in his direction. Did he know what he was doing to him? Taurtis just stood there, did he not notice the shame that Grian is currently enduring? He's just standing there, looking at his phone?
"Well I just wanna get to the party in time." Grian lied through his teeth, in actuality he was being so frantic simply just because of how anxious he is because of this stupid rabbit.
"Whatever you say, sweetheart."
WHAT. Grian couldn't believe his ears, at this point he was definitely just messing with him, right? Right?
Before Grian could even finish forming a cohesive thought regarding that remark, Sam just started laughing really hard. Like, really hard. Oh, so it was just a joke, he should have known. At this point he should just dig himself an even deeper hole than this because there's no going back at this point. Is there?
Taurtis just kept looking at his phone, what could possibly be that important. I mean, at least he wasn't paying close attention to Sam's antics because this is embarrassing enough as is, but the idea of a third party joining in to judge him would just be another inconvenience to him.
Sam started walking, everyone following close behind him, it seemed as if Sam was the only one of the three who even knew the way. whose party even is this? Sam didn't say, so does it really even matter?
As if Taurtis could read his mind, he spoke up,
"Hey so whose party are we going to?"
"Uhm, I honestly have no idea! I just found out about it from some rando at school, I just thought it'd be kind of fun to go."
Oh, so the three of them were going to a party full of possible strangers. Oh god, how could Sam genuinely be this stupid. Grian hated so bad that he was so fond of this dumb rabbit, now they're all going to a party full of completely random people.
As they were walking, they made faint conversation, barely mentioning anything about the strange way in which Sam has been acting.
After about a 10 minute walk, they made it to a house that looked very nice. The owners were definitely very well-off, Grian can’t help but wonder what the inside looks like.
As they entered the home, it appeared Taurtis immediately recognized some peers and ran off, leaving Grian and Sam alone.
Sam giggled a little bit, just one more thing that Grian can’t help but adore.
“Somebody seems to be having a good time already”
Sam said while gesturing at Taurtis, who was already giggling with his other friends.
Grian nodded in agreement, he obviously doesn’t know what to say, so he just silently agrees. Being alone with Sam can be so nerve racking sometimes. It’s not that Grian’s scared of him, it’s more of him just being so absolutely embarrassed by his attraction that it humbles him into silence.
Sam seems to take notice of his discomfort and suggests moving over to a seated area, like a sofa, or maybe an empty floor. Grian agrees, not really having anything else to say in response.
They make their way upstairs, hoping that it’s less crowded. Once they arrive they come to the discovery that the upstairs portion of this house was indeed also crowded. Sam is very obviously agitated and opens his mouth to begin speaking.
“Ugh, you know what? Let’s just check if the rooms are vacant.”
Grian nods his head in agreement and they start toward one of the doors. Sam twists the door knob and enters the room. There’s nothing exactly out of the ordinary regarding the room itself, it has a king sized bed with white bed sheets, and some paintings on the walls.
Sam walks Grian over to the bed and sits him down, once they’re both sat on the bed, Sam gives him such a pure look. The avian feels like he could explode any minute, just having to manage containing his affection for this boy was so much.
“I’ve been wanting to talk to you about something for a while, I honestly don’t know how to bring it up but I, uh-”
Sam cut himself off and they both sat in silence for a few seconds. Grian was already breaking into a sweat. Is this “something” he’s talking about the reason he’s been acting so weird? Grian darted his eyes away, so did Sam. They both just stayed like that for maybe an extra 5 seconds before Grian spoke up, avoiding eye contact.
“You what…?”
Grian bit his cheek. Hard enough to draw blood.
“Well, I maybe sort of, KIND OF, read your diary.”
There it was. Silence. The reason Sam has been acting strange, was it this? The only sound filling the room was the beating hearts of the two boys, ready to beat out of their chests.
Grian put his head down, staying silent, gripping his jeans, the color of his knuckles fading, as he held his grip tight enough to break a bone. Sam started again,
“I know you have feelings for me. I mean, I know I shouldn’t have looked through your things, but you were out of the house and I got bored.”
Sam paused for a moment trying to collect his thoughts and figure out what he was going to say next.
“I- I, I don’t exactly disregard your feelings for me at all, I know everything you said about me in that diary, and I- kind of, also really like you? I know it doesn’t make sense but I don’t want you telling Taurtis or Dom, or anyone. Please”
Sam goes on rambling like this for a little bit before Grian finally chimes in.
“Sam, you don’t have to explain yourself, I think I understand.”
Sam and Grian just stare at each other for a few passing moments while their thoughts run rampant.
Sam was so cocky before, calling him sweetheart and being all weird. What made him so shy all of a sudden? Grian thought to himself before he felt a warm hand on his shoulder.
Sam shuffled closer to him, not breaking eye contact.
Grian doesn’t back away, rather than backing away, he leans into the touch.
Sam leans in and closes the gap between them, leaving Grian shocked, but not hesitating to reply with vigor. Grian pushes Sam back onto the bed and moves his lips in sync with his companion. Sam’s pinned down, holding Grian by the hair.
Grian flinches at the sensation of his hair being tugged by Sam but he gets used to it, this is his only opportunity to get intimate with his crush so he may as well take advantage and not complain. If anything, the sensation adds to the electric tingle running through his body. He can’t get enough.
Their lips move in tandem with each other, with no hesitation, a complete new onslaught of emotion added to this mess of display of affection. They passionately hold one another with no plans to let go. Grian’s hands cup Sam’s face as he pulls away, Sam chases the sensation and Grian pauses to catch his breath.
Grian can’t help but revel in the absolute mess he’s made of this boy.
Sam jumps up and tackles Grian, embracing him in the biggest hug he’s ever received.
Grian stares at the ceiling while holding Sam, he feels so at peace with his decisions and everything that’s happened between him and Sam tonight. He huffs out a deep breath.
“I think I really really love you, Sam.”
“You think I didn’t know that?”
Sam laughs as he digs his face in the crook Grian’s neck, giving him a few extra kisses.
"You did all that on purpose didn't you?" Grian remarked.
"What could you possibly mean?"
"Everything! You've been acting so smug for so long, is it because you knew?"
"Maybe..."
Grian rolled his eyes, Sam was too busy giving him neck kisses to even notice, but he wrapped his arms around the avian tighter.
It feels like they could stay like that forever. But this is someone else's party, and Taurtis is bound to be looking for them soon, but for now they just want to stay like this for as long as possible.
