    Rex met Ahsoka Tano in eighth grade, on a Tuesday that smelled like cafeteria pizza and disinfectant wipes.

    She was sitting alone on the bleachers during gym, knees pulled to her chest, scribbling in the margins of a beat-up notebook while the rest of the class played dodgeball.
    Rex had been sent to sit out too—took a ball to the face, nose bleeding, pride wounded. He remembered thinking she looked too small to be carrying so much quiet.

    “You’re bleeding,” she’d said without looking up.

    “Yeah,” Rex replied. “You’re not playing.”

    She finally glanced at him then. Big eyes. Sharp grin. “I don’t do dodgeball. I do survival.”

    He laughed. That was it. That was how she became family.
