Ch 0.1 Heartbeat Signal
Shō always knew where to find Ritsu.
Not in the student council room, not in the library, but on the quiet, ginkgo tree-lined path behind the school. It was especially peaceful after classes, with only the whisper of the wind through the leaves.
Today was no exception. Ritsu was leaning against the trunk of a ginkgo tree, brow slightly furrowed as he stared intently at the screen of a handheld game. The golden light of the setting sun filtered through the branches, dancing in his dark blue hair and highlighting the serious line of his profile.
Shō sauntered over, hands in his pockets, his shoes scuffing softly on the pavement.
"Slacking off again, Honor Student?" His voice carried its usual, teasing lilt.
Ritsu didn't look up, his frown only deepening. "I'm not 'slacking off.' I'm trying to clear this new level." His fingers moved deftly over the controls, the screen's glow reflected in his eyes. "And you're the one who said the 'energy flow' here was good for resting."
Shō grinned. He liked that Ritsu remembered every offhand comment he made. He stopped beside Ritsu, close enough to feel the other boy's cool, contained aura, like the shade of a tree on a summer day.
"Need a hand?" Shō asked, a note of eagerness in his voice. "I could just use a little telekinesis to blast that boss for you."
"Cheating is prohibited," Ritsu finally glanced up, giving him a look of fond exasperation. "And that would defeat the purpose of the game."
"Purpose?" Shō sighed dramatically, but leaned in even closer, his chin nearly resting on Ritsu's shoulder to watch him play. "Your 'purpose' is to wind yourself up like a spring about to snap."
His proximity brought a wave of familiar warmth—like sun-warmed grass and clean soap, mixed with the unique, ember-like heat of his own psychic energy. Ritsu's body stiffened almost imperceptibly, and the character on screen was promptly struck by a monster, letting out a pathetic cry as 'Game Over' flashed across the display.
Ritsu: "..."
Shō: "See? Told you you needed help."
Ritsu resignedly put the game away, deciding to surrender. "Not that kind of help."
A gentle breeze swept through, sending golden ginkgo leaves spiraling down. One landed perfectly in Ritsu's hair. Shō's hand moved almost without thought, faster than his brain.
His fingertips lightly brushed through Ritsu's soft hair as he plucked the leaf away.
The action made them both freeze. The air seemed to solidify around them. It was too close. Close enough for Ritsu to see the rare, focused light in Shō's teal eyes, close enough for Shō to feel the sudden hitch in Ritsu's breath.
Ritsu didn't pull away. He just looked up at Shō, at the tiny leaf held in his fingers, and at the faint blush dusting Shō's ears.
"Leaf," Shō's voice was softer now, all the earlier teasing gone, replaced by a careful tenderness. He didn't let go of the leaf, nor did he pull his hand back.
"...Thanks," Ritsu's voice was quiet, as if afraid to break the spell. A warmth began to spread across his own cheeks, uncontrollably.
Seeing the faint pink on Ritsu's face, something in Shō's chest softened impossibly. He didn't speak again. Instead, still holding the leaf, he used its stem to very, very gently brush the tip of Ritsu's nose.
The tickling sensation made Ritsu blink, and then—a small, quiet smile, like ripples from a pebble dropped in a still lake, bloomed at the corners of his lips. It was a smile stripped of all its usual calm and composure, pure and almost childlike.
This, Shō thought. All his clumsy provocations, his deliberate closeness—maybe it was all just to earn this priceless, fleeting moment.
Ritsu lifted his hand. He didn't reach for the leaf, but instead gently closed his fingers around Shō's wrist, the one still hovering near his face. Ritsu's fingers were cool against Shō's warm skin, a contrast that made both their hearts stutter.
"Stop messing around," Ritsu said, but there was no reproach in his tone, only an unconscious, intimate fondness.
The ginkgo leaf fluttered silently to the ground. Neither of them looked down.
For a long moment, they just stayed like that, frozen in the amber of the late afternoon. Ritsu's grip on Shō's wrist wasn't tight, but it was certain, an anchor point in the quiet whirlwind of whatever was happening between them. Shō could feel the steady, rapid pulse under his thumb where it still rested against Ritsu's jawline. It was a frantic, human rhythm, so different from the thrum of psychic energy he was used to sensing, and somehow infinitely more captivating.
"Your heart's going crazy, Ritsu," Shō murmured, his voice low, meant for no one else. The use of his given name, without the usual teasing "Four-Eyes," felt like a secret.
Ritsu's breath hitched. "Yours isn't exactly calm," he retorted, his own voice barely a whisper. He could feel the vibrant, heated buzz of Shō's aura so close to him, and beneath that, a hummingbird-fast rhythm echoing his own.
Shō's smirk was soft, almost private. "Guess you have that effect on me." He finally allowed his hand to relax, his fingers gently slipping from Ritsu's hair, but he didn't pull his wrist away from Ritsu's hold. Instead, he turned his hand so their palms could slide together, their fingers tentatively, clumsily, interlacing.
The simple act of holding hands felt more intimate than any psychic clash they'd ever had. It was a conscious choice, a silent admission.
A stronger gust of wind swept through the path, rustling the ginkgo trees and sending a fresh shower of golden leaves dancing around them. Ritsu instinctively ducked his head slightly, and Shō laughed, a warm, genuine sound that seemed to chase away the lingering chill of the breeze.
"Come on," Shō said, giving his hand a slight tug. "It's getting cold. Let's go get some ramen. My treat."
Ritsu finally looked down at their joined hands, then back up at Shō's face, at the open, expectant look in his eyes. The "honor student" part of his brain whispered about unfinished homework and a responsible curfew. The part of him that was just Ritsu, the part that was steadily growing louder whenever Shō was around, drowned it out effortlessly.
"Okay," he agreed, a small, real smile finally breaking through fully. "But no extra chili oil in mine this time. You always do that."
"Where's your sense of adventure?" Shō teased, but he was already leading him down the path, their hands swinging gently between them.
As they walked, their shadows merged into one long, intertwined shape on the pavement behind them. And in the air, the clear, structured blue of Ritsu's aura and the wild, warm orange of Shō's didn't just coexist; they wove together, creating a new, unique color in the twilight, a silent promise of more quiet afternoons to come.
