Chapter 1: "Your Smile is Enough to Ease All My Ache"

Chapter Text

‘Ring! Ring!’

Eyes sticky with sleep’s webs, a hand extending from within a long sleeved stretched. It searched tiredly, reaching to the obnoxious sound’s source. The phone’s alarm silenced, leaving behind a stretchy silence. Groaning, the boy rubbed his eyes, wanting to suffocate himself in the comfort of his blanket. However, it felt all too weird, as he became aware of its presence around him. He, discomforted, complimented getting up, but dropped the idea as his tired body went limp. Why did he set an alarm anyway? After all, why should he get up?
He squeezed his already shut closed eyes further, attempting to recall. He saw no reason to torture himself in getting up when he could perfectly stay still. Although… then, was someone supposed to wake him, and he preferred to awake before? He DID prefer to not be startled by someone. As if the universe wanted to assure him (how odd), a soft yet cheery voice broke through.

“Dazai-kun, good morning. You needn’t forget, it’s your first day at school. I’m sure you’ll fit right in! After all, you’re only a month late, instead of transferring in the middle of the year. I’m sure you’ll find lots of friends, eh? Come on, get ready. Yumeno and Elise are getting ready as well, I’m sure they can give you some tips.”

Dazai grumbled mumbly, his already quiet voice swallowed by the blanket. The man stood there until the boy pushed the blanket off of him and sat up.
“Fine! I’m getting uuup.” Dazai dragged, rubbing his palms onto his eyes and cheeks.
The man chuckled.
A flying pillow hit him right in the face, and still laughing, he let it drop and left the room.
“Go away, Mori-sensei!”

Dazai stumbled to his feet, hurrying to close the door the doctor left open. He rumbled under his breath, not really saying a formative word. Rubbing his head, he sighed and went to grab his clothes. He wrapped his wrists and neck with bandages, before putting on the school uniform. He spinned around himself, trying to get a look without a mirror. Defeated, he exited his room and headed to the bathroom. The brunette approached the sink, staring into his reflection on the mirror. His eyes had slightly purple eyebags, and looked quite dark. His hair was messy, and he opted to brush it when he found a blue hair brush left on the sink. He detangled it a bit, leaving it to be quite quickly. It still looked messy, but in an I-don’t–really-care way. He sighed and let it be, opting to wash his face instead. He flinched at the cold splash of water, and shoved a tooth brush into his mouth. He spat the toothpaste and stared forward. Decidedly, he executed the reason he came to the bathroom in the first place. He stepped aside to the body mirror near, and twirled around himself. He gave off a weird vibe, but without looking closely, that was all he seemed like. Weird. Not someone to worry about much. He then stepped out of the bathroom and headed to the kitchen, where a cheery laughter sound was heard. He came across a rather lighthearted view; Elise and Yameno smiling big, bouncing on their feet and chasing each other as Mori was making breakfast. Three lunch boxes were placed on the table, probably fetched by the doctor.

As Dazai approached, the two children stopped in their tracks. Passing a look between them in their ‘maniac little siblings’ telepathy, it was only a slight moment before they took off running toward HIM instead of after each other. Without thinking, he turned around and ran around the table, the two trouble makers after him. The old man merely chuckled, placing a plate full of warm pancakes on the kitchen table. Dazai shot him an unimpressed look, and the man’s eyes sparkled as a wide smile spread on his face before forcing himself serious, seeing the boy’s glare.
He cleared his throat, before declaring “My, my. As lively as you are, maybe it’s best not to exhaust Dazai-kun here in a chase. And, I’m sure you are hungry, aren’t you? Those pancakes aren’t going to eat themselves. And, Dazai-kun,” here the doctor turned his attention back to Dazai. “make sure to eat as well, even a little. Alright?”
The brunette nodded, and all sat down to eat.

Dazai sat awkwardly in the car, occupied only by the doctor and himself. They had already dropped Elise and Q off at elementary school (their last year there as well!).

“Excited for the new school year?” the man asked, trying to get the teen to talk. Still, knowing it was a trap full way, Dazai decided to humor the doctor and reply with “More like dread creeping out” half jokingly. Mori, of course, took it seriously, humming along in thought.
“Well, I’m sure you’ll do well. You’re getting a tutor, given you’ve missed a month worth of material, and your grades before. You’re meeting him today after school at the school library for you to get to know each other first. And if you need anything, don’t hesitate to give me a call, alright?” The boy nodded, and before long was dropped off at school as well. Sighing, he entered the school grounds, and headed to the building. He opened his phone to check his schedule (the school had an app for this), and attempted to find his first class - his homeclass. Apparently, the school held a homeclass every day for a span of thirteen minutes at the start of the day, in order to inform the students regarding important stuff. The mission to find his class was proven to be easy, as he quickly dropped to an empty seat near a window. The classes were numbered as well, and the order didn’t take much understanding. He stretched his limbs before knocking his head on the desk, sliding his arms underneath to give it a rest place.

Something next to him shuffled, as a short-haired ginger flopped down to the seat beside him. The stranger grinned at him confusedly, but Dazai paid him no mind. The ginger, in return, took the hint and ignored him, turning around to talk to a blond, assumingly his best friend. Dazai ignored the sound, zoning out. Soon, the bell rang and the class was filled with tired students. Dazai brought his gaze up,straightening a little in his seat as the teacher entered. He began calling names, checking attendance. Once he called out “Osamu Dazai’, curious eyes turned the brunette’s way as he lazily replied with a dry ‘“here” and a raised hand. He lowered his hand, opting to stare ahead quietly. After the attendance call was finished (Full attendance and quiet class? Was this teacher a god or something?), the redhead teacher spoke up. “As you must have already realized, there is a new student joining our class. Please, I ask of you to greet and treat him kindly. You’re free to pass the time, however, Dazai,” here he specified his gaze to the brunette, “please come to talk to me.”

The class broke to shushed, enthusiastic talks regarding whatever topics must have been going on with the student’s daily life. They all scuttered to groups, leaving Dazai to go up to the redheaded teacher all by himself.
“You wanted to talk to me, sir?” the brunette asked, giving the older man an impossible to read look. The man returned his gaze, his own face even more stoic.
“Yes.” The redhead leveled him with a look, and Dazai felt his breath tightening. “I wanted to let you know you could come talk to me if you need help with anything. As your home teacher, I’m responsible for you.” They stayed silent together for a few moments, before the teacher discharged him. He lifted up his hand a little, flopping at Dazai with a “See you at Literature”. The brunette was heading to his seat when the bell rang, the class emptying like a flood flowing between open doors. He grabbed his bag and left.

The school ended, and a bandaged brunette stood across the doors to the school library. He was tired, rubbing his right eye lazily.

Dazai reached out a hand, but froze before it touched the handle. His hand floated on top, silent in dread. He was tired, and wanted nothing more than… Well, nothing. His hand dropped to his side, and he stared into the void. After a while, angry steps echoed as someone was approaching from inside the library (which he was supposed to enter), followed by crazed mumbles.

Dazai swiftly turned around and ran, abandoning his tutor before the poor guy could even reach the door and see him.
His steps barely echoed as his feet hit the floor. He took the bus, not calling Mori to pick him up. Elise and Q were probably already back at the house, and Mori was probably working. As he waited at the bus stop, his phone buzzed. He opened his texts, seeing as said doctor sent him a message.
‘Your tutor texted me to inform you’re not there. I assume you’re not feeling so well, so I’ve told him to lay off. Please, try seeing him tomorrow. He was so stressed… On another note, how are you?’
Dazai sighed and replied with ‘Not so great, ig. My day was pretty good, though.
I’m going back to the house.’
‘Alright. Remember to eat something, yeah?’
‘K’

The teen popped the phone back into his pocket, waiting. As the bus arrived, he went in and took a seat by the window. He rested his head against the window as the bus drove, feeling his head getting little bumps. He didn’t mind, since the motion and atmosphere were pretty peaceful. As he reached the house, he fumbled for his keys and unlocked the door, relocking it after him. A lively pair approached him, their blond and brunette hairs coming to view.
“Dazai! You’re home!”
“Q here has been torturing me!”
“Wa-! I just showed you my dolls!”
“And called me one!”
The girl in a red dress and kid in the blue jacket bickered, and Dazai chimed in. Despite being exhausted, he took on the rule of an older brother. “Hey, hey, both of you. You’re pretty chaotic, huh?” He blinked as two wide smiles grinned at him in return. Sighing, he swiped off his shoes and made his way to the kitchen. He heated up some leftover mashed potatoes and stared, before reluctantly taking a bite. Not long after, he shoved another spoon to his mouth, then another. He did so slowly, while smiling faintly at the children doing their homework.
Despite not really wanting to, he brought along his work. He stared, realizing he wasn’t quite getting it. Well, of course. He missed out on a lot of studying. He put it away and resulted in helping the little ones when they got stuck (he knew enough to help, he was well enough when he was studying this a few years ago). They tackled problems slowly, and soon enough, all homework was done.

After that, the tired teen made himself comfortable on the living room’s sofa. The kids brought Monopoly, placing it down on the table near Daza’s resting place. They unpacked it, with Dazai joining in and picking up the pieces, smoothly sliding them onto the start block. The kids stared in awe, eyes wide and sparkly. “Cool!” the blonde declared. “Now, we can fight, but no killing!” Q chimed in, ending Elise’s sentence with “Mori says no one’s allowed to die in the living room!” cheerfully. The older brunette coughed, choking with surprise and laughter. Although… such claims did suit the doctor nicely. They started the game, and soon it became so heated even foggyzai got passionate. After a while, Dazai and Elise were declared as winners both, since they were in a tie. The older teen helped return everything into place, then proceeded to check on the kids and keep a watching eye of them as they got ready to go to bed. Unknowingly to him, they did the same, returning the favor. Eventually, each child retreated to their own bed, long ago silent when Mori returned.

The man smiled fondly, getting ready to go to sleep himself.

[Bonus scene - UNKNOWN POV]

The teen tapped his foot anxiously and repeatedly, boring a hole into the wall with his gaze. Fed up, he was ready to go when his intuition spiked up. He approached the door, rushing forward when he heard a scuttering sound. However, when he opened the door, no one was to be found. Sighing, he fished out his phone from his pocket, typing in something quickly. After he got an answer, he packed his things and went home. As he reached home, he flopped down in his chair. He grunted, burying his face in his hands. The force of habit striking him, he shook himself up and went down to the kitchen. After a good, fulfilling meal, he opened his phone as the sound of a notification was heard.
