Flins loved Varka in silence. But Varka did not feel anything beyond what was ordinary toward him. He was kind to Flins—kind to everyone, in fact—and warmly welcomed by many.
Flins was not the most important person in his life. He knew it was ugly of him to want more, but the heart had a stubborn will of its own, and that stubbornness caused him pain.
The only way to preserve his dignity and self-respect was to bury those feelings and act normal, even when his heart ached—dull and persistent, or sharp and stabbing—every time he looked at him.
Or at least, that was what Flins believed.
