Day 16: Feelings Realization

Summary:

A routine sparring match spirals out of control when Sonic and Shadow lose focus—literally. As concern grows and answers remain elusive, a quiet moment in the forest reveals the truth they were both avoiding: their distraction isn’t weakness, but feelings finally catching up to them.

Work Text:

It was a normal sparring match, like any other they had for the past few years, but somehow, it felt completely different. They were exchanging kicks and punches while circling around, eventually creating a tornado with their speed, instead of stopping it so it wouldn’t pull in more air and become a threat for the village, they kept circling, until the tornado grew so huge that not even their speed could stop it, and it swallowed them both, now spinning through the air while the tornado slowly approached the village.

Luckily, Tails, Rouge and Silver were around. Tails kept the villagers away from what was slowly approaching them, while Rouge tried to look inside the tornado, since there were blue and red highlights every now and then. Silver used his powers to stop the tornado completely, that was the moment when Shadow and Sonic fell to the ground, the blue hedgehog fell face-first onto the ground while the other fell on his butt.

-What happened? Why didn't you stop before the tornado started forming? —Rouge was scolding Shadow

-Sonic! How many times did I tell you!? —The fox screamed at his older brother

-I don't know, alright? —Shadow got up, getting dirt off his knees

-I'm sorry buddy! I really am! —Sonic tried to stand up but was brought back to his knees by an angry Tails

-Sonic Ogilvie The Hedgehog —He said, Silver was trembling behind a pillar, Rouge couldn't have turned any faster, and Shadow stood sill not wanting to even look at Tails

-ᶠᵘᶜᵏ —He whispered, before the fox grabbed him with his tails and stomped his feet away from there

-Remind me to never make Tails angry —Silver said, floating near Rouge

-Could ask you the same dear —She replied, realizing Shadow was walking away— Hold on right there! I'm still not done with you!

-What do you want no- —He was dragged closer to her, Silver stood next to Rouge curiously

-What happened? Did neither of you notice the tornado forming around YOURSELVES? —She tapped his forehead with her finger

-I don't know, alright? I didn't notice anything until the wind pulled us inside the tornado —He tried standing up, but the bat stopped him from doing so— What the heck, Rouge!

-That's exactly why I'm worried —She said softly— Neither of you noticed it until it was too late, what if it happens again? I don't want you to get hurt, nor Sonic —She had a worried expression, Silver started to understand her point

-She's right, Shadow —He caught both their attention— There's something making it difficult for both of you to concentrate, if it keeps happening, something serious might happen

Shadow understood both their worries, and said while complaining that he would try to see what has him losing focus. Meanwhile, Tails opened the door to their house and yeeted the hedgehog inside, Amy and Knuckles were also inside, both angry as well.

-You could've gotten hurt! —The fox closed the door— What's going on? Why aren't you concentrating enough?

-What? —Sonic asked, rubbing his head while standing up— Concentrating? I'm fine bud, really

-Then why did you let a tornado form right under your nose with your and Shadow's speed? —Knuckles spoke coldly, from the couch

-Sonic, is there something going on? You know you can count on us anytime, right? —Amy asked, standing next to Tails, who was still mad

-Listen, just try to find out why you're not focusing enough, ok? —The fox spoke, walking to the kitchen— Don't let this happen again

-Yeah, I know —He opened the door— I'll go for a run, maybe I'll understand what's going on

-Don't create a tornado —Knuckles said sarcastically, waving at him

-Yeah, yeah, bye Tails, Ames, Knux! —He went outside and ran to the mountain again

-Do you think he'll figure it out? —Amy asked the fox

-I hope he does —He drank a glass of water— If not, something could happen to him during battle

Sonic ran through the city until he reached the mountain's path, running to the top of it and watching the city from there, admiring it. Until he saw a red streak with his left eye, turning around. Shadow was also running around the mountain, he laughed and decided to follow him.

Sonic caught up to him and said he didn't want to fight, after what they had caused. So they decided to walk through the forest while trying to figure out why they weren't concentrating.

-You didn't notice it either, did you? —The blue hedgehog asked, the other clicked his tongue

-No, I didn't —He replied, surprising the other— I was trying to figure out why before you interrupted

-I was doing the same, and then I saw you! —He smiled, somehow it didn't annoy the alien as much as he thought it would

-Got any idea? —He asked, making the other think

-Humm... Not really —He yawned and stopped walking— Why don't we take a nap? Kind of like a break

-Really? Didn't you JUST started trying to figure out what happened?

-Yeah, so? I thought enough, I wanna nap

Sonic sat near a big tree, crossing his arms behind his head and closing his eyes, Shadow noticed that it was weird for him to not climb the tree first, so he sat down next to him and stared at his hand for a while. He started trying to connect the dots.

He was sparring with Sonic, but it felt different. They both started to accelerate, and were going faster and faster until the tornado started forming around them. They were both so lost in running that they didn't notice what surrounded them until the air pulled them inside it. And that's when Shadow realized, and he couldn't have blushed harder, looking at Sonic, who was sleeping soundly, even snoring every now and then. He stood up and started running around the forest, trying to let it out of his head, but he couldn't.

Sonic woke up a little later, Shadow was walking in circles and mumbling, he didn't hear anything, they were too far. Sonic tried connecting the dots as well, naming on by one the same things Shadow had thought minutes before, and he also noticed the pattern and realized what was going on. He couldn't help but gasp, loud and clear, while turning into a living tomato.

Shadow noticed he was already awake and jumped before looking back at him, they both stared at each other, knowing that the other already knew what was happening, they stared at each other for a while, closed their eyes, and screamed at the same time. Their scream echoed through the mountains and reached Rouge's house, she smiled and laughed, they sure took their time to notice it.
