LETS TALK ABOUT ILYA ROZANOV
Okay, I’m not going to beat around the bush here: I was involved with current twitter target and star player of the Ottawa Centaurs (vomit) Ilya Rozanov for about 4 years.
I’m a big hockey fan (grew up with brothers who played and in the Midwest) and happen to live in Denver (boo avs). I also was a big fan of clubbing back in my day.
So one day in 2011 I’m at a club downtown and who walks in but Ilya Fucking Rozanov. I follow hockey so I knew he was in town playing the Avalanche but I definitely could not have predicted seeing him at a club. Especially because he was under 21 and this was very clearly a 21+ club but I guess if you have enough money the rules bend in your favor. Anyways, Rozanov and a few teammates come in and he starts perusing and looking around at the girls scattered throughout the club and I well - he’s hot okay? So I gave him a sultry look and he came over to where I was standing near the bar.
I’m not here to share the epic details of this situationship because they’re not highly relevant but I’ll tell you guys this: Rozanov and I continued to regularly hook up anytime he was in Denver until the end of the 2014-2015 season. It was completely limited to when he was in Denver, we never texted outside of that and neither of us had any romantic feelings. I didn’t have great luck with guys in my circles/dating websites (in the Stone Age that’s what we used) and wanted to have non-committal sex. Ilya Rozanov was a man I would NEVER want to be committed to, was happy to hook up, and was available frequently enough.
I broke it off with Rozanov before the 2015-2016 season started because over the summer I met a guy (we’re married now!) and no longer needed the services of a very attentive Russian hockey player. Rozanov was incredibly chill about it, wishing me the best of luck. And that was that.
So what am I getting at here? And why am I posting this here on this sub?
When the fanmail video came out I was completely taken aback - like most of the world. I felt for him and Hollander, and would’ve felt for any players who were outed like that regardless of if I had a years long hookup with one of them. And then I looked through the comments on here, twitter, instagram, whatever. And I was just shocked to see people weaponize Roz’s past as a “ladies man” against him.
They were commenting like “he’s using Hollander” or “bet he’s cheating on Hollander with bitches” or “bet he walks Hollander like a dog” or “Ilya Rozanov is a womanizer and a pig.”
And those weren’t even the worst I saw.
So I came on here to tell you that Ilya Rozanov was possibly the sweetest man I could’ve had a casual hookup relationship with.
He was incredibly attentive, patient, and happy to stop if anything was wrong.
That guy always asked me exactly what I wanted. He never once demeaned me (or anyone for that matter). Never used derogatory language. Never made me feel used. ALWAYS waited for clear consent.
And yeah sure, I didn’t know him well - or at all. I can’t possibly vouch for him as a person but I can confidently say I just don’t get a vibe that he’s anything but a good person.
Plus, looking at the way he and Hollander were kissing in that video - I feel confident in saying that he cares about that man. A lot.
I think we should normalize slut phases. And not shame Ilya Rozanov for being a manwhore. Especially since he was nothing but a caring and gentle partner to me. With no reason to be necessarily. I mean I wouldn’t have gone back to him had he been a piece of shit but you know what I’m trying to say here.
I’m posting to this subreddit because some of the people here are frankly evil toward those men who you don’t know personally? Who literally have never played anything less than stellar hockey against one another?
Believe me, don’t believe me, think I’m using this to be famous, I don’t really care.
I know my truth.
Also - if y’all need to hate a player SO bad then hate Dallas Kent. He’s a proven piece of shit. The law is innocent until proven guilty and boy was he.

Oh my god! So good to see someone who isn’t a fucking idiot.
For the record - I am NOT a hockey fan. But I’ve lived in Boston since birth and ran the same clubbing circuit as men of the Boston Bears for years. Most notably Ilya Rozanov.
Now, for years I never interacted with Rozanov. Just saw him drinking, making out with girls, leaving with girls whatever. Who cares? That’s like the whole thing about clubbing in a city in your early 20s. And Rozanov never seemed like an issue to me. He drank a lot but I never saw him as aggressive. Especially not towards any women. They all looked perfectly coherent when he left with them or danced with them. He was always shockingly polite with his touches even when he was doing downright filthy shit.
One night in idk maybe 2013(?) - my friend and I
(Who we can call V for the sake of this story) were dancing and drinking as per usual. For context, we were maybe 22 at the time and I am half-black (although I pass well for white) and V is very clearly Latina.
So let’s just say we’re used to the racism that Boston has echoing throughout the city. It’s still an unpleasant sensation though, lmao.
This guy comes up to us - big, white, maybe 30, CLEARLY drunk and starts chatting my friend’s ear off.
V is very much not interested and tries to leave when he grabs her by the wrist. I kind of just stand there like wtf and he says something like “want to bring your slutty friend here too” and obviously V and I were like no thanks dude, go home.
He was very much unhappy with that. So he started calling V and I some very disgusting words and saying some nasty shit to us (mostly shit about V being Latina, you don’t need me to spell his comments out to you).
And as V is trying to get her wrist out of his grasp and I’ve moved my hand towards my pepper spray someone literally GRABS this dude and pulls him backward, making his grip slip and letting V pull herself free. We turn to thank the guy and realize it’s fucking Ilya Rozanov.
He punches the guy in the face and lets him crumple to the nasty ass ground. Then he SPITS on him and says (I vividly remember this) “you think you will get women by being gross asshole? you are fucking idiot. grow up.”
The guy gets himself up and scurries away and me and my friend are just standing there shocked bc we weren’t expecting Ilya Rozanov to be the one helping us out. Telling a bigot to not be a bigot and all that. He was renowned for being a ladies man in Boston and no one had ever outwardly said he was a piece of shit but yk assumptions.
He then turns to V and I and goes “I am sorry men are like that. Is disgusting to say such words. You ladies are both beautiful, I hope you have a good night.”
And with that the literal god of Boston hockey nods and walks away from us.
When he left Boston people were mad and I just remember trying to defend the guy. It’s a low bar but hey - he still didn’t have to do that for us.
So #letmenbemanwhores but also #onlyiftheyrespecttheirpartners it’s like the old adage you get more bees with honey (?)

I hooked up with Ilya Rozanov in like lateish 2016? He was incredibly polite. He seemed a little out of it but it’s fine bc he did a great job.
Quick. Protected. Consensual. Hot. What more could you ask for? Just bc a man (or woman) has a high body count doesn't mean they’re a horrible human.

Went clubbing with some girlfriends YEARS ago (maybe 2014?) and one of my friends seemed to be warming up to this guy on the floor. She was fucking plastered. She grabbed him and they were talking and she pointed at us - definitely gone. I almost stepped in to grab her and take her home but before I could the man (with a thick ass Russian accent) plopped her back with us.
He was like “you’re her friends, yes?”
We of course said yes.
Then he was like “she wanted to sleep with me, I don’t think this is good idea. she seems like she’s about to fall asleep on the floor. should probably go home.”
I was kinda shocked this guy didn’t just go and fuck her and one of my other friends definitely was too and was like, “why’d you bring her back?”
And he said and I KID YOU NOT, “is not fun unless I know she is actually agreeing.”
Then he sauntered away. And we took her home.
The next morning she was FUCKED up. Only knew it was Rozanov bc of twitter.
Thanks Ilya Rozanov, you’re a decent guy.

AK: Well it’s been quite a crazy past few weeks in hockey.
JS: Understatement of the fuckin’ year, Aud.
[both hosts laugh lightly]
AK: Just last week we covered Troy Barrett’s coming out and now here we are, talking about Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander.
JS: So, if you live under a rock and don’t know, Captain Shane Hollander of Montreal and Captain Ilya Rozanov of Ottawa but formerly of Boston were spotted in a Fanmail video sent out by Hayden Pike - who is a teammate of Hollander’s - kissing passionately.
[Audrey wolf whistles]
AK: I swear to god I would sell my kidneys to be kissed even half as good as that kiss looked.
JS: Anyways, the men got benched quietly by the NHL and Commissioner Roger Crowell -
[booing sound effects]
Before both returned to their respective teams and released a statement confirming their and I quote “years long” relationship publicly.
AK: Now listeners, we don’t want to bore you with our takes on the situation. It’s already been beaten to death these past couple days. So instead we want to talk about the internet's responses. Specifically to Ilya Rozanov liking men.
JS: Just to preface, we will not be referring to Shane Hollander or Ilya Rozanov with any labels as they have not publicly announced their sexualities. We also want to state right here that any bigotry will be swiftly removed and reported. Don’t be assholes. These are real humans.
AK: Exactly right. So, Ilya Rozanov has been known since his career began over a decade ago as a bit of a ladies man. He seemed unapologetic in seeking out women often. We don’t actually know when this behavior stopped and we won’t speculate on that. But we do know a prevailing theory of why Rozanov left Boston in 2018 for Ottawa was that he had found someone. And was just secretive about it.
JS: So people quieted down about Rozanov and his escapades. They faded softly into the wind. No one made a big deal of anything. Until now.
[Audrey laughs]
AK: Yes the lovely people on twitter.com have much to say about Rozanov and Hollander knowing Rozanov’s sexual past.
[ a beat of silence occurs]
AK (continuing): And it’s fucking stupid, sorry! I don’t know why people on the internet are so concerned with Roz’s past and so protective of Hollander.
JS: You’re so right. They’re both grown ass men. I guarantee Shane Hollander is well aware of Rozanov’s sexcapades. Why are people babying him? He’s a fucking GOAT. I mean so is Roz. But Shane Hollander is one of the greatest playmakers to have ever touched the ice of a hockey game. He’s not an idiot.
AK: Exactly! People are acting like he’s a child and an angel baby like guys he’s almost 30 years old. Just because he was more private about his romantic life in the past doesn’t mean Roz is DOING anything to him. What a weird fucking assumption. If you look at the video like I know we all have, my boy Hollzy is perfectly into it. I don’t know why people are acting like Rozanov is some master manipulator. Have you guys seen anything bad about the man online?
JS: Actually, a post on Reddit blew up this morning from a woman who is claiming to have had a 4 year casual hookup relationship with Roz. And she made it very clear he was good to her. I swear people are such prudes. Then they turn around and tweet about how they want to be a watermelon crushed between Hollander’s thighs. It’s so backwards!
AK: And everyone online speculating about their sexual relationship is fucking weird too! These are real people. Who just got outed in a field where only 2 other men have actively and publicly come out as players. Mind you one of those happened less than five years ago and the other less than 5 WEEKS ago. Plus the whole bullshit rivalry stuff. I would’ve been terrified to come out if I were them. For the rivalry alone. Sitting on your phone publicly tweeting that you think one of them takes it up the ass is WEIRD. Put that shit on AO3 if you must, but not where you’re practically asking them to see you commenting on the intimate details of their relationship like they’re on a reality television show.
JS: Celebrities don’t own you shit. Especially these guys. They’re athletes they don’t get paid for you to peek into their lives they get paid to play a fucking death game on knives with sticks.
AK: And all the bullshit about how they can’t trust them to play against one another? Did y’all miss when they said years? Last I checked Hollzy brought a chip home to Montreal just last season. Last I checked Roz has managed to make the Centaurs into a playoff level team. No they aren’t alone responsible for these things but let’s be fucking real. No one on the ice is better than Rozanov and Hollander. Who cares if they fuck behind the scenes? It’s obviously not changing their competency on the ice.
JS: It’s weird like - do you guys think siblings like the Rowe brothers throw shit for each other? No! And if you just look at the stats guys, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov play their best when they’re against one another. So maybe we should thank them for their relationship! Because it’s bright us some damn legendary hockey.
[Audrey hums in agreement]
AK: I hope to god these men are allowed to just play their damn game. And that people remember this is their lives. And careers. And it doesn’t matter who fucks who behind the scenes as long as it’s consensual. So if y’all make a big stink of their upcoming playoff series - if Rozanov and Hollander happen to falter. I blame society. Not them. Because obviously they’ve been doing just fine playing without everyone breathing down their necks. And don’t forget #letmenbemanwhores.
[Johnny sighs lightly]
JS: Now, for some lighter news and discussion - let’s talk about San Francisco defender Patrick Silver’s new additions to his family.
AK: Pet. Fucking. Sugar Gliders. I’ve never been more envious of someone in my entire life…

Shane wants to murder his entire fucking team.
Except Hayden. And maybe J.J.
Ever since his return post outing, they have been playing like shit. Silence permeates through the locker room and on the ice. They purposely don’t pass to him during drills. They glare at him anytime he touches his phone like it’s a fucking bomb.
Shane just wants to play hockey. He wants to play hockey and kiss his fiancé and not have people trying to mash those two things together. Yes, his fiancé is his career long rival on the ice. Yes his fiancé is also a bit of an asshole. Yes no one knows they’re engaged either (at least they have one thing they get to announce).
What Shane doesn’t understand is why his team - who care so much about winning - are fucking dropping the ball. It seems counterintuitive but hey, when has Shane ever been great at people?
This is what he’s stewing over in the New Jersey Visiting locker room about an hour before he needs to be on the ice. The men around him - most of them being men he’s known since his rookie year - sit stony and refuse to interact with Shane outside intense glaring and dropping insults in French like Shane isn’t fluent.
God, he just wants to play hockey.
This of course is when his phone begins to buzz. Ilya is calling him. Because why not. It’s not like he has a game in an hour. But, he supposes, Ilya must be calling for a reason. He himself is a hockey player and understands the mindset and importance of the pregame routine. It seems his teammates don’t, though. Which is probably why he answers the call.
Although, he does show with an attempt at nonchalance answering with casualty as he makes his way out into the hallway, feeling far too many sets of eyes on his retreating figure.
“Hey,” Shane starts, helplessly feeling the tension drop from his shoulders before Ilya even says a word. Fucking whipped. “Is everything okay?”
“You know what is trending on twitter right now?” Ilya says excitedly without any pleasantries. Shane would be annoyed if not for the tone in his fiancé’s voice.
“No. You know I don’t touch any social media unless I’m chained down. And neither should you!”
“Boring. So boring. Yawn. I am sleepy. Have good game Hollander.” Shane could hear the rustle Anya’s collar and the footsteps of Ilya softly in the background - meaning he was walking Anya and definitely not about to sleep.
“Don’t be a dick,” Shane grumbled, “what’s trending on twitter? Should I be scared? It’s not like there’s anything else that could possibly be revealed about us now. Except for your intolerable habit of leaving dirty clothes on the floor.”
Ilya scoffs. “I pick up! You know I do. Just not right in the moment.” He sighs and Shane can almost see him pinching at the bridge of his nose, but not in irritation, in fondness. “On twitter, #letmenbemanwhores is trending.”
“Okay?”
“No more than okay, Shane. You must know why is trending.”
“Hit me,” Shane says leaning back into the wall grounding himself in its coolness.
“On Reddit today, a girl posts. She says I am sexy man who does not deserve hate.”
Shane lightly rolls his eyes. He seriously cannot figure out where Ilya is going with this, “not to feed your ego but I think a lot of people are spreading that message.”
“Shane. Girl is not random girl. I know her. Her name is Siobhan. She was the girl I met with in Denver for a few years. Very smart. Hated the Avs. But was a fan of Detroit.” He pauses. “Maybe not so smart.”
Ah. Shane can’t help but let the slight wave of jealously roll up his body, lodging uncomfortably in his throat. He swallows.
It’s not that he’s ashamed of Ilya. Or even really jealous. Ilya’s vice had always been sex. That wasn’t a secret nor was it something Ilya would apologize for. And Shane didn’t want him to. It was perfectly okay that he had sex with other people before they were exclusively. So did he. Well, to a much much lesser extent but still.
But whenever a woman was mentioned, Shane found himself jealous that they got to see a different Ilya than he did. Even if just a momentary glance. He yearned to see Ilya naturally in a club setting, to know what the freedom of being a girl with Ilya Rozanov felt like. Knowing it wasn’t a scandal. Knowing it wasn’t trouble.
“Okay,” he responded willing himself to stay calm.
Suddenly Ilya’s voice was impossibly close and gentle. “Shane, do not be jealous. Was long time ago. Siobhan and I broke it off because she got a boyfriend. We never spoke outside of planning to have sex or having sex. She was nice though, reminded me of Sveta. I wished to be her friend sometimes but that wasn’t the way it was meant to be.”
Shane took a shaky breath.
Ilya continued, “plus Siobhan didn’t talk much about our sex. She defended my honor. Called me kind. And said she’s married to the man she was with when we stopped seeing one another. Was nice.”
“I’m glad, Ilya. How did you know it was her? Was it obvious?”
“No. She is not in it for fame. I can tell. She actually used… what is word for secret identity of someone?” He snaps his fingers on the other side of the line.
“Anonymous?” Shane offered.
“Yes!” Ilya exclaimed. “Was anonymous account. She just mentioned true details that only I would know.”
“Okay, so how did that Reddit post become a viral twitter hashtag?” Shane glance at the clock, noting he only had a few minutes until he had to be back in the locker room, performing captain duties like his entire team didn’t hate his guts.
“Is funny. She posts on Reddit, it goes viral. She ends post with #letmenbemanwhores, about me. Then people start making other posts. Sharing stories. About me. Not even just sleeping with me. And all using same hashtag. Now is trending on twitter.”
Oh. That was actually really sweet. Ilya had been hit hard by the outing - as had Shane but not quite in the same way. People took their personas as hockey players and made them… personal. It was frankly really offensive. People were trying to protect Shane from Ilya as if Shane was passive in their relationship and not an instigator. As if Shane was coerced. It was kind of sickening. And he knew Ilya saw it all. Saw people weaponizing his sexual past against him. Saw the blatant biphobia. Saw that people thought of him as nothing more than an obnoxious asshole. Which was Ilya’s persona for a reason, sure. But it was still gross.
Shane smiles into the phone, “Ilya. That’s honestly amazing. I’m glad people are standing up for you. You deserve it. Even if it means people will know that you’re really a big softie who loves children and dogs and cuddles.”
Ilya laughs. “No. I don’t want people to know all about me. Is not their business. They have enough. But is nice to know not everyone thinks I am a villain in this story. When if anyone is villain it is you.”
Shane sputters, laughing. “How am I the villain?”
“You are the one who corrupted me. Is simple.
“No, no that’s just wrong. You accosted me in the showers.”
Ilya gives a dramatic gasp, “lies! you stared at me naked. I reacted like any 19 year old boy would. Is nature.”
“Okay bullshit. I don’t have time to argue with you about this though, I have to go hype up my team. Or try, I guess.”
“You are being you. Being best player. You are good. They are sad and dramatic. Is bad that Hayden is playing second best on team. Maybe let them know. Maybe that will fix their problems.”
Shane looks at the clock, shit he really does have to go.
“Stop being a dick about Hayden. He’s the only normal one right now.”
Ilya grunts. “Is in my genetics. Be sexy. Kiss Shane Hollander. Hate Hayden Pike.”
Shane gives a real laugh at that. “I have to go now, I’m sorry. I love you and will talk to you after the game.”
“Yes. Go show them why they have 3 Stanley cups. Do not forget you are Shane fucking Hollander, моя любовь.”
They hang up simultaneously. Shane walks back into the locker room, takes a deep breath, and accepts his reality.
But he’s still going to win this fucking game.

Montreal wins 4-3. Shane scores 3 of those goals and assists the 4th on a frankly gorgeous play that allows Hayden to slam the puck into the goal. The rest of the team played like shit. This was now typical for his team. It made Shane want to vomit and scream. Maybe not at the same time though.
Sitting on the bus heading back to the hotel gives Shane an opportunity to go on twitter (he did really hate it and had his notifications off) to see what the #letmenbemanwhores ordeal was really about.
He clicks on a thread by @hollzysangels that provided the entire timeline of the rise of the hashtag, starting from Siobhan’s Reddit post.
And he is… kind of in awe.
Each story, each tweet, each comment, they all spoke of Ilya in a way that was so kind and respectful. Much like the Ilya Shane knows.
He sees women posting how Ilya had spilled drinks over men being weird towards them, even going so far as to fight a few of these men. He greedily reads all of the accounts, heart warmed by the commonality of Ilya hearing a slur or a bigoted statement at a bar or club and reacting immediately. Something he had been doing since at least 2009 according to Reddit poster tiredmillenial, who had watched him deck a man in a dinky Canadian bar after the Juniors when the man in question had said something racist and Ilya, after asking a companion to explain what the word meant, went apeshit.
It was kind of embarrassing, honestly. Because Shane was sitting on a bus full of people who loathed him, loathed Ilya, as he read story after story of Ilya being a good person without anyone requesting he do so. Paying for people’s drinks, helping girls back to their friends, holding doors open, paying for Ubers and cabs, even holding a girl's hair back as she vomited into a trash can behind a bar.
This was his Ilya. His fiancé. His kind, patient, ever attentive Ilya. And other people saw it too. Even if just for a second. He helped others. Made them safe. Made them smile.
Of course, in pure Ilya Rozanov fashion this charming behavior had to be attached to something utterly chaotic; in this case each tweet, each comment, no matter how simple and sweet, was accompanied by #letmenbemanwhores. Which out of context did really paint a completely different picture.
So Shane does the only reasonable thing he can think of on the quiet bus, he starts screenshotting his favorites with intense fervor. He saves all of the screenshots in a little folder in his images called “why him”. And then he decides to do something that might send his mother and Farrah into cardiac arrest.
He opens instagram, and takes some of his favorite moments and stories from what he read and uploads them with a caption of his own.

People have always had things to say about me and Ilya Rozanov. Individually and together. Most of the time it’s easy to ignore, forgive, and accept.
But I do not accept people slandering Ilya without any evidence. I do not accept people infantilizing me as if I didn’t know exactly what I was getting myself into when I chose to be with Ilya. The speculation has gotten out of hand. And I will not stand by and watch people defame the best person I’ve ever met in the entire world.
Someone’s consensual sexual activities do not define who they are. And if they did - someone having many partners if not a crime.
I love Ilya Rozanov. He is gentle and caring. His persona on ice is just that. A persona. He is witty and sure, he’s sometimes an asshole. But no one is more loyal than he is.
And I am lucky to have this man in my life. And I love every facet of him. And I will never be ashamed of him.

Shane promptly deletes instagram and twitter and silences his phone to all notifications except Ilya, his parents, and Rose.
His heart pounds as the adrenaline of being so vulnerable and outspoken hits him. He notices the buses energy slowly start to shift - seemingly as his teammates read his post. He doesn’t care what they think anymore.
He just wants to go home and sleep and surround himself with those he loves.
He closes his eyes and takes deep breaths.
Shane feels his phone buzz in his hand once, twice, continuously. Eventually, he gives in, opening his eyes and reading his missed notifications:
Mom:
Amazing game - for you and Hayden.
That final goal for the hat trick was nothing short of stunning!
Oh, honey.
That was beautiful.
I love you and I’m proud of you.
He won’t tell you this but he’s currently crying into your father’s arms right now.
