    It feels weird referring to someone the same age as him as “Sir,” but that is one of the rules. Always refer to every member of the household, including the help, as “sir” or “ma’am.” This is one of the tactics used by the company to remind the sweeps that they are the lowest of the low. Clients mostly refer to them as “boy” or “the sweep,” if they refer to them at all. Only the nicest families refer to them by their name, like the Smiths, like Spencer.
