Work Text:
Laslow flipped a page in the catalogue and sighed, “nothing in here looks any good…”
The catalogue was filled with all sorts of flashy, extravagant dresses and accessories. It was all rather pricey too. He wasn’t opposed to spending an arm and a leg on her, especially for her birthday, but nothing in this catalogue was really speaking to him in that sense.
He sighed again and flipped another page. Perhaps, he should do something a bit more simple this year. She doesn’t need anything extravagant, despite how she acts a lot of the time.
“Papa, what are you doing?”
Laslow felt a tiny tug at his pants as he looked down to see his 4-year-old daughter. She took a bite of her cookie and looked up at him with wide and curious eyes.
He smiled, “oh hey, Soleil! Papa is just trying to think of what to get Mama for her birthday. Do you wanna help?”
The small girl nodded her head.
“All right,” he picked her up and put her on his lap, “does anything in this book look good to you?”
Soleil took another bite of her cookie and took a quick look at the catalog. She flipped the page, then another, and then another. Eventually, she shook her head.
She took one last bite of her cookie and said, “ibts all hagh.”
“Don’t speak with your mouthful, sweetie.”
Soleil quickly swallowed, “it’s all bad,” She finally said.
“Yeah, that’s what I thought too,” He slumped back in his chair, “I’m fresh out of ideas though.”
Perhaps, he was just overthinking this.
Soleil hopped off of his lap and brushed the cookie crumbs off of her dress.
“And where are you going?”
“Cookie!” She said before bolting off towards the kitchen.
“Hey wait! I think you’ve had enough of those today!” He quickly ran after her.

Selena yawned as she stepped through the portal and into the deeprealm. She looked up at the full moon in the deep indigo sky.
Not two seconds ago, the sky was a bright azure blue that surrounded the golden sun. She was almost never gonna get used to the difference in time between the deeprealms and the outside.
Selena carried a few shopping bags filled with what one would expect like clothes, accessories, and a couple other frivolous nick nacks. It was her birthday, after all. Why shouldn’t she splurge just for today.
She took a peak inside one of the bags, “oh I can’t wait for Soleil to try some of these on!” She smiled.
Selena made her way to the small house at the end of the path. She took a moment to unlock the door and walked inside.
“I’m home!” She shouted into the house as she took off her shoes.
“MAMA!!” Her daughter sprinted down the hall toward her.
“Soleil!” Selena caught her daughter in her arms and smiled.
She never got tired of seeing her daughter’s adorable face, which she got from her by the way.
“How’s my little sunshine?” She asked, “did you miss Mama?”
Soleil nodded, “look, mama! Cookie!” She said holding out a chocolate chip cookie in between them.
“Oh wow that looks delicious! Is it for me?”
Soleil nodded again, “Happy birthday Mama!”
Selena saw her daughter smile that bright and warm smile. She felt warm.
“Gods, you’re so cute!” She hugged her daughter once again, “now come on,” she stood up while holding Soleil, “show me where papa is.”
“He’s that way!” Soleil pointed down the hall.
“Okay!” Selena ran down the hall.

“Geez, what a mess…” Selena wiped off a bunch of frosting from Soleil’s face with a napkin.
“I’m surprised any of it went in her mouth,” Laslow said with a rather concerned look.
Selena glared back at him.
“Did I say something wrong?”
Selena didn’t answer, “stupid moronlow” she said with a sigh.
“Papa is stupid!” Soleil laughed.
“That’s right!” Selena patted her daughter’s head. “Papa is stupid!”
“Stupid handsome you mean?” He said with a studly grin.
“No, I mean just stupid!” Selena said as she sat back down in her chair.
“Back to the ice queen already…” Laslow sighed and sat back down.
“Damn straight!” Selena took a bite of her cake, “all you got me was a dumb fruit cake! Talk about bare minimum!”
“Sorry Selena, I just couldn’t find anything good in the catalogs I was looking through,” he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, “even Soleil said nothing in them looked good!”
Soleil nodded, “yub ball bab!” She said with a mouth full of cake.
“Sweetie, what did I tell you about talking with your mouth full.” Selena said rather sternly.
Soleil swallowed, “sorry, mama…”
“That’s better,” she smiled before patting her on the head again.
“Well, if you said it was all bad then I guess I can forgive papa but just this once!”
“Really?” Laslow said.
“YAY!” Soleil cheered.
“Just don’t get the wrong idea…” Selena said as she went to hug Soleil again, “it’s only because she’s so darn cute! And not because I’m just happy to spend time with you two, got it!”
“Got it,” Laslow smiled, “happy birthday, Severa.”
“Happy birthday, mama!”
