Summary
Holding the Syndicate responsible for his parents’ death, Phainon’s lifelong goal is to kill their leader… and also the person who was his adoptive father, Nanook. Chrysos makes inroads on their quarry, the day Phainon will take out his nemesis growing ever closer.
But someone gets there first.
“The only one who can kill you is me,” Phainon tells the still body in front of him, sitting in the circle he drew. Nine flickering candles anchor the corners, holding vigil. Taking a knife from his bag, he bows his head and presses his lips to Nanook’s forehead, whispering an apology. It’s easy to do when he knows the dead won’t hear, when he knows that he’s more likely to bleed out tonight than succeed. He sets blade to flesh.
“Even in death,” his voice chokes up, “I won’t let your spirit know peace.”
