Chapter Text
Bonnie went down her checklist. Green and pink streamers and balloons up. Music at an audible but not too loud volume. Snacks out but not uncovered yet to preserve their crispiness.
“It was so nice of you to host Bonnie,” Simon says, bringing in the utensils.
“I mean Huntress practically begged,” Bonnie says, “I guess she was worried about guest touching her dead elks or something.”
“Is she still being a weirdo to you Simon?” Marcy asks with a smirk.
“That’s not nice Marcy,” Bonnie says.
Marcy is of course referring to Huntress ceaseless mission to befriend Simon.
After a series of strange courting practices that no one is quite certain are accredited to Huntress being a green wizard or Huntress being well, Huntress she has managed to befriend a few members of the wizard academy faculty. Turns out some people actually love the idea of being gifted a still beating dove heart.
Simon had already considered Huntress a good acquaintance but that hadn’t stopped her from popping in a dropping off “tokens of her admiration.” Fortunately none of them could be described as “beating” or “freshly dead.” At least not anymore.
“I can’t believe it’s already Leona’s birthday. It feels like just yesterday they found her. I feel old. Do I look old?” Simon asks the room, “Who would’ve thought Huntress would turn out to be quite the MILD.” He seems proud of himself for keeping up the kids.
“Simon what,” Marcy asks only slightly horrified.
“Pep taught it to me: Mother, Instructor, Leader, Dame. That’s what all the kids call her. I can not believe ‘dame’ is making a comeback. And I thought I was old fashion.” He laughs to himself. He thinks he’s really hip.
Pep was staying with Marcy and Bonnie for the weekend for the party.
Bonnie yells upstairs to him, “Peps stop giving Simon fake acronyms.” Which is quickly followed by Marcy yelling up, “Peps please keep giving Simon fake acronyms.”
“He is right though,” Bonnie says.
“Okay thank glob I thought I was the only one, that mom bob is WORKING for her,” Marcy admits.
“No not that-well yes that too-but no sometimes I can’t believe they’re actually parents,” Bonnie says.
She honestly shouldn’t be all that surprised. Finn’s always been dedicated to help anyone in need. Huntress was a bit more unexpected. But she guesses no one likes the idea of kid being left alone in the woods.
“I wasn’t too surprised but I also met a version of Finn with five kids,” says Simon way too causally.
Marcy and Bonnie drop what they’re doing, “FIVE?!” They say in unison.
“Well I think one of them might have been his brother, he’s actually living in Fionna’s world now,” Simon adds as if he didn’t just drop a bomb.
“Do you think our Finn is going to have five kids?” Marcy asks.
“Maybe someday if they found another kid sure but-well Leona’s come a long way but she still gets overwhelmed,” Bonnie says.
“I’m still nervous this might be too much for her,” Marcy worries.
“We kept the party small and she’s met everyone’s who’s been invited,” Bonnie assures, “plus I have a games set up for her outside if she wants to get away from all the noise.”
“Speaking of did you fireproof the deck?” Simon asks.
“What do you think I am some kind of amateur?” Bonnie says almost insulted.
Leona loves her Aunt Phoebe but Aunt Marcy loves when all of her furniture remains unscorched. Maybe it’s rude to exile her to the porch but everyone agrees a flaming couch might overwhelm the birthday girl. Bonnie promised they’d do the cake and sing on the porch.
“And what do we do if the birthday party planner extraordinaire gets overwhelmed,” Marcy asks adding a little bit of sing songy flair to ‘extraordinaire’ and gives her girlfriend a squeeze.
“I’m not going to get overwhelmed,” Bonnie says perfectly aware of the military like planning she’s put into a little girls birthday party, “I think this has been good for me.”
“I just don’t want to see your pretty little face get all stressed out.”
“There’s a big difference between running a kingdom and throwing a five year old’s birthday party.”
Marcy raises an eyebrow.
“Honestly Mar. I really mean it.”
“Well then I’m happy for you.”
“There were times where I didn’t know if we’d get to celebrate stuff like. I’m just happy to be a part of it,” Bonnie says.
Marcy gives her a soft smile.
Her and Finn had lived through a lot. It was a globdamn miracle they made it through. Zombies, invasions, battles, and a poison that almost destroyed them both. She dreamed of days like this. Of watching sunsets with Marcy, of reading with Needy, of birthday parties and barbecues.
Technically speaking Bonnie was the youngest person in the room right now. But you see a lot in 800 years.
It didn’t really matter that Finn was only a small fraction of the years. Time didn’t define the friendship. It wasn’t a bond made up of looking after each other, of consoling, of comforting, of making it through difficult conversations and times to get to the much happier ones again and again.
And just on cue there’s a knock on the door.
“I’LL GET IT,” Bonnie exclaims (lovingly) pushing Marcy out of the way.
“Hey Bonnie hope we’re not to late to help set up,” Finn says scanning the room.
“Been set up since 6AM,” she says quickly. Bonnie only has one thing on her mind and she gets right to the point, “where is the cutest girl the world? I need to see her right now.”
The cutest girl in the world was currently hiding behind her mom cape. She pretends not to see her.
“I guess we forgot to bring her,” Huntress says playing along.
Bonnie spins around, “Alright then. I guess we’ll just pack it all up. Marcy rip down the streamers.”
“Should I throw out the cake?” Simon joins the fun.
“I guess so…such a shame. It’s got blueberries between all the layers. She would’ve love that,” Marcy says faking a sigh.
“Noooooo!” A voice comes from Huntress’s cloak. And all of a sudden: a birthday girl appears. “Not the cake!”
“There you are!” Marcy says faking surprise, “how did you get here! Is your mom already teaching you magic?”
“You didn’t throw out the cake?” She says worried.
“Don’t worry it’s safe in the fridge. But I think before that I was thinking you’d want a sandwich? What do you think Bonnie?” Marcy asks.
“Oh think someone wants. No. Needs an auntie sandwich,” Bonnie confidently agrees.
An auntie sandwich consist of Bonnie and Marcy smooshing Leona in a hug so tight her father worries she can breathe between them.
“I fear one day you two will simply never give her back,” Huntress says.
“Oh you hear that Bonnie?” Says Marcy releasing Leona, “that’s not a bad idea.”
“Simon!” Huntress sees her target. “I got you think rock, it’s slightly magic and very old,” she unceremoniously hands him a small jade rock, “you like that right?”
“Thank you very much Huntress. I’ll put this next to the other ones you gave me,” Simon says.
“Don’t put them too close to each other or they might cause a small explosion,” Huntress says nonchalantly.
“If you’ll excuse me I have to go rearrange some things in my room,” Simon says quickly making his way upstairs.
“Bonnie thank you again for hosting,” he says going in for a hug, “I don’t know where I’d be without you.”
“Probably dead,” Bonnie says without a lick of sarcasm and hugging her best friend back.
