A New and Worse Devil

Summary:

"Do you remember the last time you saw the Harbinger?"
Browning shook his head. "No. I just remember being moved from the Tower to the House of Reckoning, and then Jega took me to his stronghold. I haven't seen her since."

- Halo: Edge of Dawn, Chapter 25, page 201.

(Based on Whumpuary 2026 Creation Day 12.)

Notes:

Based on Whumpuary 2026 Creation Day 12: Interrogation | Numb | Wrist Grabbing

Title based on Lucas' "Sangheili devil" nickname for Jega.

Warning: the plot contains mild spoilers for last December's Halo novel Edge of Dawn. If you haven't read that, then what's in this fic isn't too spoilery, but still, your choice to read now or after you've read Edge of Dawn.

Also, Lucas might be a bit more lucid in this than what the books / audio logs implied for this time period, I hope that's not bothersome. Even after I realized, I decided trying to replicate the writing of Lucas' dream-like POVs would be too difficult. This may also accidentally contradict knowledge Lucas has or does not have by the time Chief rescues him, but I'm not worrying about that. I'm just prioritizing letting a story flow out based on what I think makes sense.

Also there's no Halopedia pages for the new locations introduced in this book, so I'm writing the setting mostly off memory and some skimming of the book.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Oddly, Lucas Browning was beginning to grow worried for the Harbinger's sake. Someone who wasn't Chak Lok or one of his direct subordinates was escorting him from the House of Reckoning, but not back to the Tower - both places Lucas had "lived in" for... how long was it now? Weeks? Months? Even though there was a clear daily schedule, the time passed was still eluding him. That was probably a side effect of the fatigue the whole situation brought him - although some blame could be put at the Harbinger's feet, as the strange things she was doing to him seemed to affect his perception of time at times.

Her... For some reason, she latched onto him as a sort of pet to mentally toy with. Probably because he was the human used to free her from imprisonment - and therefore, the first and only human she laid eyes on. He'd call it horrible luck, but he felt like it wasn't. Lucas got himself captured while trying to save others. Unlike most of the captives, he wasn't a soldier that could be tossed into the gladiator ring nor a high-ranking official with knowledge to beat out of.

At least, not until the Harbinger started whispering into his ear, placing secrets so deep into his brain that he wasn't conscious of all of them. Even though the Banished and the Harbinger had formed an alliance - with the former seeking the latter out in the first place - it appeared they weren't sharing much between each other, with Chak 'Lok jealously trying to learn what the Harbinger only shared with Lucas.

Something's happened, Lucas decided. Either my time is up and I'm being taken to the slaughter, or plans changed. Did the alliance with the Harbinger break down, and now they're taking it out on me? Are either of them about to do something big?

When the unfamiliar journey ended, Lucas found himself in a place he'd never been taken before. First of all, they traversed through a cavern behind a waterfall until they hit a constructed maze. All the halls and rooms were enclosed with no windows - not immediately a red flag, but the water dripping from the ceiling gave the impression it was for the reason of being submerged.

After being dragged by the Kig-Yar guards that'd taken over from his previous escort, Lucas was pushed to land at the feet of a cyborg Sangheili he'd never seen before. In time, he would know this red-and-black blademaster as Jega 'Rdonmai; but for the time being, the Sangheili wasn't interested in introducing himself. He got straight to business by clutching Lucas' bound wrists and lifting him off the ground. Lucas' face was inches away from the four mechanical-mandibled jaws that smelled just as foul as the biological original.

"Where is she?" he snarled, his voice highly raspy and not as deep as the average Sangheili's. Lucas only briefly wondered how much of that was the effect of the cybernetics, as he soon decided the origin of a monstrous feature meant nothing to him.

Jega's grip tightened on his wrists, even though the blademaster had yet to give Lucas room to respond. "Did she tell you her plan? Why has she disappeared?"

The Harbinger is missing? And Lucas wanted to throw up at how his stomach churned with concern. Her being gone should be a blessing to him after all she'd done. Yet part of what she'd done was forcibly implant care and obedience. Lucas had no idea what she was planning and what was going on, but he imagined that even if she did tell him, she would've also implanted the order not to aid the Banished against her.

But best not to point that out to this guy. He looked pissed - he would not take that well.

"I- I don't know what... you're talking about," Lucas forced through his clenching teeth, caused by the combination of pain and fear. That only got worse as his response triggered twin blades to activate from within the arm not holding him up, while that one clutched so hard that Lucas could feel his bloodstream hitting a brick wall within the veins.

"She told a cowardly weakling everything and shared with us nothing," Jega hissed into his ear. "I intend to correct that."

Then Lucas' side hit the ground hard as Jega slammed him down and kept pressing, as if he could get Lucas to go through the floor. He heard a whisper from a few feet away, projected just loud enough for him to hear.

"But first, I will grant you one mercy: You will have a day to get familiarized with your new cell." Jega chuckled, then hinted at the cause with: "I hope you find it an improvement over that useless Warden's Tower."

And just for a beat, Lucas found himself concerned on Chak 'Lok's behalf as well - because at least that asshole had displayed some manners when beating the shit out of a prisoner.

Here I thought I was already in the palms of lunatics...

That would be the last lucid, composed thought Lucas Browning would have for sometime.

Notes:

The surprise reveal that Jega has his own Rdonmai keep on Zeta Halo was nice, especially little tidbits we got like how he made extra sure to bulk up the cybersecurity. Joy was still able to break through, but still, I like the potential implications of this detail and Joy's reaction of calling him paranoid. I may just be reading too much into it and hallucinating more character than Halo intended, but it reads to me that he's smarter than most of the Banished leadership in regards to stuff outside of the traditional battlefield, as well as better than them when it comes to tech. Also, the paranoia is probably justified - he doesn't seem to be very popular with his peers, and they likely have been waiting for an opportunity to try and strike at him without consequence.

Then again, based on dialogue Banished characters have in response to each other's demises, I think a lot of the Banished just hate each other and are waiting for each other to either die or be weak enough to kill off. What a weird faction, lol. I know they're antagonists and mercs & pirates and all, but still, it feels kinda weird / sucky that they hype Atriox's philosophy so much, and then the Banished as a whole kinda falls short of it. Tho ig that's kinda realistic?? It also relates to a hot take I have: the Banished and the Swords of Sanghelios bothcompletely wrong? For one, just like how the Banished are loyal to Atriox yet will do things he wouldn't approve of (offing useful humans just because they hate humans or pursuing “petty revenge” as two major examples), there's been quite a few Swords characters that like Thel but dislike / outright are racist to humans still. Olabisi is ride-or-die for Thel and 'Talot was also very loyal, but they both also represent conflicting and hard to reconcile visions of the Sangheili's future (Olabisi being progressive feminism, 'Talot being isolated traditionalism / nationalism), and literally could not get shit done when Thel was not physically around to mediate between them. This is the state of the Swords while Thel is still alive. Imagine what's gonna happen moments after he drops dead.

Sorry I randomly rambled about something that had nothing to do with Lucas or Jega or anything that happened in this fic, lol. The above really should be a Tumblr post; maybe I'll still copy-paste it later.

further discussion of spoilers, assumes you have read the book to understand:

But poor fucking Lucas Browning, man. I said in Zita's DMs that he's clearly Kelly Gay's favorite character to torture and torment: "it's not just the amount of pain he goes through[.] it's the amount of hope that's sometimes thrown his way, only to be ripped away”. Though I guess it's always possible he's not just her favorite to torture and torment, but 343/Halo Studios' as a whole, since there is overlap between the audio logs and her books. They really gave him - and all of us - hope during this book, only to rip it and douse the wound in lemon juice after with the reveal that Lucas' old crew just barely missed getting to see him alive one last time, and vice versa. As I also said in Zita's DMs: "also officially new worst thing the Forerunners did: teleport Chief into an unskippable cutscene long enough to let Browning die". Makes me curious AF what the Lifeworker Huragok was thinking, lowkey wish we got a POV from them. Maybe in the future?

There's also apparently light Halo Tumblr discourse going on about what makes Jega 'Rdonmai appealing / simped more than Chak 'Lok and this fic probably did not help lol. I'll try to use future slots in my 365 day challenge to maybe write propaganda for the both of them... maybe sometimes simultaneously?

Update as I get ready to post: had to skim some more of Edge of Dawn to grab the quotes from summary, and it's made me decide I'm not 100% happy with this; I'm still gonna post, but I might try writing another Lucas-Jega torture ficlet in the future to really show why Lucas calls him "the Sangheili devil".
