Winds never steer you wrong

Summary:

A power swap AU with Jay and Morro I wrote a while ago that I've decided to turn into an actual fic, it's gonna be very Jay and Cole centered I think.

Notes:

This is going to be multiple chapters and will likely be slow coming out, My writing style is NOT fast whatsoever.

Please make me known of any typos, I'm 83% sure I'm some form of dyslexic.

Chapter 1: Ghost story

Chapter Text

"It was then, I thought I had found the One. Perhaps he would wear green."

"Whoa, Whoa, Whoa! Back up." Jay cut off his Sensei's story telling. "You're saying that Morro, the Master of Lightning, was gonna be The Green Ninja!?"

Lightning suddenly struck in the air behind them, lighting up the night sky yet not hitting anything as if to just put the ninja on edge, a warning.

What had been a cool, clear summer night a few hours ago had now turned into a thunderstorm that was in no way natural. The night sky was nearly pitch black with storm clouds and the lightning was calculated and precise, no doubt the work of The Nunchucks of Lightning. Jay whipped his head around as the thunder clapped, expecting another fight, expecting this new villain they knew next to nothing about to swoop down on his elemental dragon, made of nothing but lightning and fury, and grab someone else just like he had grabbed his brother.

But… there was nothing. No more lightning, no more thunder, not even any wind or the soft sprinkle of rain just beginning.

Nothing.

"Uh.. did that just happen?" Cole muttered to no one in particular. He seemed almost scared as he looked at the sky where streaks of lightning had split through the rolling storm clouds only seconds ago. "Maybe I don't like ghost stories."

"What happened next, Sensei?" Zane pushed their teacher to continue despite the Earth Ninja's apparent uneasiness.

"Morro had found the very scroll that I told you four about." Wu started again "After learning of the possibility that he could be The Green Ninja, a darkness awoke inside him. He became overly aggressive in every aspect of his training and I feared that I had made a terrible mistake by leaving that scroll in such an easy to find spot. But it wasn't for me to decide if he were to be the chosen one, it was destiny."

Jay let out a soft, almost nonexistent hum, biting the inside of his cheek as he thought about when Wu first started training him, how his teacher was convinced at the time that he'd be The Green Ninja despite him not even wanting it that much and how he had silently thanked Destiny herself when The Golden Weapons didn't respond to him.

He would of missed the winds too much.

Wu had paused for a moment, either thinking about something or waiting for more questions, before continuing. "When The Golden Weapons did not respond to him like he had hoped… He gave me this," Their teacher pointed to the scar on his face. "left The Monastery in search of my father's final resting spot, and never returned."

None of the ninja, in all their years of being trained under Sensei Wu, had ever dared to ask the question of how their beloved teacher had gotten that gruesome scar on his face, But now that Jay knew the story behind it, he could see that it was almost identical to the fresh, newly bandaged wound on Kai's forearm.

Jay could barely look at the Master of Fire. His now injured teammate had slipped away as him and the others were boarding the Destiny's Bounty, they watched from the deck of the ship as Kai stayed behind to fight that psycho lightning wielder on his own, trying to free Lloyd from his possession.

He went after him. Being the only one who still had his powers and that fact it was one of his teammates in trouble, Jay had no choice but to summon his wind dragon and go back.

He was just seconds short of getting to him in time.

Kai was lucky that the effects of elemental lightning weren't as damaging as natural lightning, Or he might not have made it out of that fight with the entirety of his arm still intact. The entire time the ninja were trying to get away from Morro, or so Jay had been told by Cole, Kai was actively fighting anyone who tried to patch him up and kept trying to go back for Lloyd, Not knowing there wasn't a Lloyd to go back to.

Because, during the fight, when The Master of Wind locked eyes with the world's beloved Green Ninja? pure hatred and rage was all that glared back at him.

And in that moment he knew, his little brother was gone.

Jay was snapped out of his thoughts by a raindrop landing on his face. He blinked in surprise, looked up at the still stormy sky, and sighed as more raindrops slowly begun their decent from the clouds above. "Just another day in Ninjago, huh?"

"Right then." Nya stood and looked around at the ninja "Story time's over, we need to find a place to sleep that'll shelter us from the rain and the Bounty's isn't gonna cut it after that disaster of a landing. Zane?"

The Ice Ninja nodded and stood up as well, balancing on the log that he and Cole had been sitting on so he could better scan the area.

Within a few moments the Nindroid had found a cave not to far away and with the help Jay and Cole, they had gotten all the spare camping gear out of the Destiny's Bounty and into this nearby cave just before the light drizzle of rain had turned into a downpour and the Lightning started back up.

It was a little further away this time but still present. calculated strikes of sheet lighting, timed just right to make the most light possible. No matter how much Jay tried to ignore it, he could feel the changes in the wind and he knew exactly what it meant.

Morro was circling back around to find them.
