Work Text:

Basil had no idea what was going on.

Sunny was standing over him in his hospital gown, smiling. He had just told everyone their secret! Well, Basil knew what was going on for that part.

But the part that confused Basil? Was that Sunny was staying with him. Sunny is SMILING at Basil! Like Basil is something worth smiling at!

“D-Do they know..?” Stupid Basil, of course they knew. You saw it happen, they probably didn’t know you were awake at the time though.

Sunny nodded, still smiling at Basil like a fool.

Basil tried to smile back, but it was hard when the proof of Basil’s harm was on Sunny’s face.

Sunny probably noticed Basil was staring at his right eye. Or, what was his right eye.

“It’s okay… You don’t need to feel guilty… I forgive you… It was a small price to pay for your life.” Sunny spoke as Basil froze up. His voice was scratchy and sounded sore. Though, that wasn’t the reason Basil froze up.

The reason Basil froze up was…

Sunny, the same Sunny who he had covered up a murder with. The same Sunny who he had taken an eye out of, was forgiving him!

It made no sense!

Sunny should hate him! Basil hates himself for even hurting Sunny! Yet, Sunny doesn’t. Why? It doesn’t add up! Sunny should be ripping him apart for what he’s done to poor innocent Sunny. Yet, Sunny forgives him?

“… you shouldn’t…” Basil couldn’t help the words come out. He knows Sunny wouldn’t change his mind, but it seems wrong to not try.

Sunny should be clawing at Basil with rage. Not forgiving him with mercy that seems befitting for an angel sent from above. Basil has always seen Sunny as something above perfect, but to this extent? Forgiving someone as sinful as Basil? It seems wrong, like Basil is tainting something beautiful and pure.

Sunny looks at him with something that seems like sadness, before shaking his head.

“I could never hate you…”

For some reason, that made Basil so, so mad.

“THEN WHY’D YOU LEAVE ME?!” Basil didn’t want to yell, but it was hard not to. Basil was so alone for all those years. He just wanted to be told that everything was going to be okay.

Sunny slightly flinched at the raise in Basil’s voice, before looking at the floor.

“I’m.. sorry… It wasn’t my intention to leave you all alone…” Sunny spoke softer than Basil has heard in years. It almost made Basil feel bad for yelling. Almost.

Basil believes Sunny when he says he didn’t mean to leave Basil to handle it all by himself, but it doesn’t change the fact he did. Basil just wishes.. wishes Sunny had stayed.

“I know…” Basil slumps into the hospital bed they provided him with.

Sunny looks as if he’s contemplating something, before walking over to Basil’s bed. Without Basil being able to properly deduct what Sunny was about to do, Sunny climbs into Basil’s hospital bed.

Huh..? HUH?!

Basil feels his face heat up as Sunny gets comfortable with him.

Basil knows they used to share beds a lot as children, but right now? This bed was barely big enough to fit the two of them. The only reason they’re not falling off is because of Sunny being so malnourished! Which is slightly concerning to Basil.

Sunny just stares at the ceiling for a good second, before facing Basil. Basil is sure he looks more like a tomato than a human being at this point.

Sunny really hoped doing this would’ve made Basil relax. It always seemed to work when they were younger. However they are older, and Basil has changed. So it makes sense. Though, why Basil is getting so red is getting concerning to Sunny.

The tension between them is getting more and more awkward, so Basil tries to start up some kind of conversation between them to get rid of it.

“So.. what did you do in your house, Sunny..?” Sunny slightly shrinks with that question. Damnit Basil! Always ruining things by making people feel uncomfortable! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

“I.. dreamed…”

….

“Dreamed..? Really?” Basil was confused, he was sure Sunny was doing at least something else! Though, it does make sense at how malnourished Sunny seems to be. Dreaming all day certainly would do that to your body.

Sunny nodded at Basil’s question.

“W-What did you dream about…?” Basil knows it’s rude to intrude on personal information that people seem uncomfortable talking about, but Basil deserved to know. Or, he believes he does.

Sunny began scratching at his wrists. Obviously not enjoying the conversation, but he sighs and begins to speak.

“I.. dreamed about you… Well.. more like everyone…” Basil seemed slightly shocked by this, but waited for Sunny to continue.

“We usually went on adventures together… Against enemies and villains…” Basil was confused by all of this, but it seemed pretty simple. Kind of like those video games Kel and Sunny used to play on Sunny’s gameboy.

“Did.. I join you on your adventures..?” Basil asked as his voice cracked slightly. Damn puberty. Sunny shook his head at this.

“No.. you’d usually go missing…” Basil felt saddened by this answer. But it felt befitting for someone like him.

“We’d go looking for you in Headspace..” Sunny looks down at his hands, who are red from him scratching at them.

“You’d go looking for me in.. Headspace..?” Basil tilts his head, wondering what and where that is. Sunny nods his head at Basil repeating his words.

“Yeah.. it’s what I called my dream… There were a bunch of places.. like Otherworld.. Vast Forests.. and Orange Oasis…” Sunny spoke with spaces between his words, like he was struggling to even speak about this.

Basil slowly nodded his head at this information.

While Basil didn’t understand a lot of the words Sunny was currently saying, he does at least know the basic information about Sunny’s dreams.

Basil goes missing, and the others go to find him. That’s the basic concept.

Though, he doesn’t understand why Sunny seems so uncomfortable talking about it. Is there something he’s hiding?

“Anything.. else..?” Basil looks at Sunny who seems as if he’s thinking about telling Basil something. Something important.

Though, Sunny shakes his head. Basil frowns, but nods at Sunny’s decision.

They just sit there for a good minute, before Sunny lays down. Basil takes the initiative and does the same as Sunny.

Basil thinks about what’s going to happen once they get out.

“You’re going to leave once we get out…” Basil speaks quietly, as if saying it is forbidden.

Sunny nods sadly, “I am…”

Basil’s frown stretches on his face. He doesn’t want Sunny to move. Not when he just got Sunny back.

Sunny looks at Basil, and grabs Basil’s hand. Basil slightly freezes for a moment, but grips onto Sunny’s hand afterward.

“Do you think we’ll still be together after you move away…?” Basil stares away from Sunny's eyes. He’s scared Sunny will say no.

Sunny seems to think hard for a moment, before nodding. “Of course.. We’ll always be together.”

Basil looks at Sunny who looks up at him with determination in his eyes. Basil smiles with hope for the first time in a while.

“Yeah.. we’ll always be together…” Basil feels tears spiking up in his eyes, but he wipes them away before going in to hug Sunny.

Sunny is a little startled at Basil’s actions, but he leans into the affection after a second.

They stay like that for a good minute or two. Before Basil pulls away against his own wishes.

“Let’s make some new memories, okay?” Basil tried so hard, but he can’t help but let some tears out.

Sunny smiles at Basil, before nodding, “Yeah, we will. I promise, and I mean it this time.”

Basil trusts him. He knows Sunny won’t abandon him this time.

Basil is scared for what’s about to come, but as long as Sunny is by his side, he knows they’ll be fine. No matter what happens.
