“Ah man, you definitely needed a major tune-up…”
Tails sighed as he wiped black grease from his brow, peering up at the bottom of the Tornado biplane from below. “Looks like it’ll be another all-nighter, huh?”
Lying on his wheeled creeper, the two-tailed fox used his feet to change positions underneath the plane, moving back and forth as he occasionally emerged from underneath to retrieve specialized tools. His orange fur was covered in grease and sweat, a problem that was out of mind for the determined kitsune as he continued performing what he considered vital maintenance.
His project began in the early afternoon, and while he thought it’d only take a couple hours, he overshot this estimate by a mile. Of course, this would normally be no big deal for the young fox, a genius mechanic who enjoyed the ongoing passion project of regularly maintaining his small fleet of biplanes, however…
“Tails!”
“Yeowww!” Tails exclaimed as he shot up in surprise, bonking his head underneath the plane in the process.
“Oh, Tails, are you alright?”
“Y-yes, Cosmo…” The fox slowly pulled himself out from underneath the plane as he massaged the large red bruise forming on his forehead.
“I didn’t mean to startle you,” Cosmo continued as she approached the young fox, gently holding Tails’ head still as she assessed the damage. “It looks like it’ll be tender for a while. May I treat it?”
“I’m fine,” Tails replied with a chuckle, placing a single gloved hand behind his head, a small blush appearing across his muzzle. “We’ve certainly had worse, right?”
“I guess you’re right,” Cosmo replied with a smile, her eyes closed as she sighed in relief. Cosmo had long known that Tails was a workaholic, but since they returned from their battle with the Metarex, and subsequently moved in with each other, the orange fox had a caring girlfriend to look out for him, especially when he overworked himself in the garage. Indeed, there have been numerous occasions where Cosmo found Tails asleep underneath the Tornado, having to carry him out of the garage, bathe him while he was half-asleep to remove the grease, and get him into bed so he’d get a proper night’s rest.
Cosmo giggled under her breath at the thought, reflecting on how much she enjoyed being with, and caring for, his furry lil’ boyfriend, even if he couldn’t sprout flowers from his pointy ears.
“Hey, what’s so funny, Cosmo?” Tails asked, his head tilted in confusion as he peered over at the young Seedrian.
“Oh, just thinking about you is all,” she replied with a giggle, her hands clasped behind her back and looking away sheepishly, earning a blush from the orange kitsune.
Suddenly, however, Cosmo gasped.
“What’s wrong?” Tails asked.
“I was going to remind you about the double date!”
“The double…da…” Tails froze as he remembered the plan with Sonic and Amy to meet for dinner: a nice pasta restaurant in Spagonia with a week’s long reservation waitlist.
The orange fox peered down at his matted, greasy fur before peering at his watch. “It’s 4:30 PM…Cosmo, how much time do we have?”
“The reservation is at 5,” she replied worriedly. “What are we going to do?”
The fox tossed Cosmo the key to the Tornado 2 biplane, parked on the other side of the garage next to the Tornado 1 under repair. The Seedrian fumbled the key in her hands, letting it slip through her fingers as they fell to the ground. “Once you’re ready, start it up and go through the proper pre-flight checks. I’ll be out of the shower ASAP.”
“Aye aye, captain!” Cosmo exclaimed, giving her furry boyfriend a salute. Of course, the two chuckled as they got to their tasks.
Tails immediately jumped in the shower. Fighting through the cold of the water, he rapidly treated the matted and greasy areas of his fur along his chest, arms, legs, and, most laboriously, his twin tails.
Cosmo, meanwhile, washed her face and fluffed the flowers along either side of her head, trying her best to see into the mirror fogged up from Tails’ shower.
Just as she was finishing, the orange fox shut off the water and reached for his towel through the shower curtains.
“I’m going to start the plane now!” Cosmo called as she stepped out of the restroom.
“Thanks, sweetie,” Tails replied as he began drying himself.
Returning to the garage once more, Cosmo approached the Tornado 2, climbing up into the cockpit before taking a deep breath to help gather her bearings. She was still a novice pilot, having only received a few basic lessons from Tails, but she did remember the safety checks Tails taught her previously. Indeed, Cosmo inspected the dash, surveyed the area of the garage immediately surrounding her, and, after starting the plane, adjusted all mirrors to her proper specifications.
Finally, the green Seedrian clicked a button on Tails’ dash which opened the large garage door connecting the facility with the runway leading toward the cliffside. Cosmo’s eyes glistened as she took in the early evening sky, the sun just starting to set and a light breeze blowing pollen this way and that.
“Ah, everything looks good,” Tails noted as he emerged from the door separating their shared living space with his adjoining garage.
“Here,” Cosmo said as she began to pull herself back to the passenger seat, “I kept your seat warm.”
“I think we still have time yet to slip in a little flying lesson,” Tails replied, ducking into the passenger seat before Cosmo could do so, forcing her to stay in the chair usually occupied by the orange fox.
“Gosh, I don’t know, are you sure?” Cosmo asked, a sweat drop appearing across her forehead. “I’ve never had a time limit, nor have I ever landed anywhere else other than this runway.”
“You’ll be fine,” Tails replied with a wink. His calming demeanor was enough to provide Cosmo with the confidence she needed to start the flight.
“Okay, then I’ll do it.” With a newfound sense of determination, and furrowing her brow, the Seedrian carefully drove the plane down the runway until it had fully left the garage, at which point she slowly pulled back the yoke, allowing them to take flight over the ocean waters below.
“Nice n’ steady,” Tails directed as he carefully studied the turbulence, or lack thereof; despite having only had a small handful of flight lessons, she flew indistinguishably from a professional. “I’m impressed with how quickly you caught on to this, Cosmo!”
“Well, I do have some experience flying spaceships,” Cosmo replied with a giggle, “although those are mostly automated, so I’m not sure that actually counts.”
“It’s more experience than most,” Tails replied as he pulled himself out of his seat ever so slightly, his muzzle approaching the red flowers atop Cosmo’s head and giving them a good whiff.
“Eeeeek!” Cosmo gasped, her face turning flush red as the plane shook, sending Tails over the front seat, his head careening into Cosmo’s feet and his rear facing upward while his namesakes covered the Seedrian’s face.
“Tails, are you okay!?” Cosmo gasped.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he replied as he pulled himself up, sitting in Cosmo’s lap to re-stabilize the plane, causing the Seedrian to blush even more. “You failed the test, though,” he added as he peered back at Cosmo, his eyes closed and a smile across his muzzle.
“What test?” Cosmo asked, her head tilted in confusion.
“One of the most important things to remember about flying,” Tails replied, one hand on the yoke and the other raising a single finger upward, “is to never let anything distract you, including your boyfriend admiring the relaxing scent of your flowers.”
“Wait, I…” Cosmo’s face was still red. “You think my scent is…relaxing?”
“Well, I…ummm…” Now it was Tails’ turn to blush, a single droplet of sweat forming along his forehead. “Let’s…just say I got rid of all my air fresheners since you moved in with me.”
“Oh, that’s…economical…” Both Cosmo and Tails were beyond embarrassed, their faces showing a blight display of crimson as the plane, somehow, kept the two level with little turbulence.
“…I think I’ll head back now,” Tails said as he began to pull himself out of his seat.
“No,” Cosmo replied, gently wrapping her arms around Tails’ waist and forcing the fox to sit down. “I…like this. I want to stay like this.”
“Are you sure?” Tails replied, peering back in concern, a gentle blush still across his muzzle.
“Yes,” Cosmo replied with a nod before gently grabbing his tails and wrapping them around her neck, massaging her face with them. “As long as we’re admitting things here…you called my scent relaxing, but your fluffy tails are, well…comfy.”
“Comfy…” Tails’ face returned to peak blush as he positioned himself in his seat, trying hard not to put too much pressure against his girlfriend’s belly in the process. “I’m…glad you like them.”
Finally, just as Tails’ heartrate returned to normal, the Seedrian leaned forward slightly to give the unsuspecting fox a careful kiss on the side of his muzzle before leaning back once more, returning to her cuddle session with his namesakes.
Hearing and feeling the gentle breathing from Cosmo against his back, her silky-smooth face against his furry tails, calmed his heart. Sighing to himself, the orange fox counted his blessings, thankful to have found someone caring, gentle, beautiful, and loving to share in the joys of life.
The young kitsune was nearly lost in daydream when he noticed the familiar sight of Spagonia across the horizon. The seemingly ancient city, with its gorgeous architecture and lively population of humans of various backgrounds, coupled with its numerous attractions, restaurants, and the university for which Professor Pickle, his academic companion, lectures and studies, has a special place in his heart.
Gurgle…
The fox clasped his belly, thinking that the city would now have a special place in his stomach too as he began to lower his altitude, soon landing at the airport right outside the heart of the city.
“Here already?” Cosmo complained as Tails pulled himself from his seat, taking his comfortable namesakes with him.
“Hey, you can have them all night tonight,” Tails replied with a smirk, fluttering his tails as if to tease his Seedrian girlfriend.
“That’s true,” Cosmo replied with a smile of her own as he watched Tails jump from the Tornado 2, cushioning his fall by spinning his rotary namesakes. The Seedrian followed suit, except she slowed her descent by allowing air to fill her dress.
As they left the airport, Tails checked the time on his watch. “We’ve got two minutes until the reservation’s up.”
“How far is it?” Cosmo asked.
“Just a few blocks,” Tails replied with a nod as he extended his hand out to the young Seedrian. Cosmo gladly took it, and the couple jogged until they reached the door.
“After you, m’lady,” Tails said with a grin as he held the door open, gesturing his arm slowly toward the entrance.
“Ahh, such a gentleman,” she replied with a giggle before stepping inside.
The restaurant was lined with tables throughout covered in nice, white cloth, narrow glass cups, fancy napkins, lit candles, and flowers. Most of the tables were full, a majority of which were occupied by humans and the rest an assortment of Mobians. Despite the occupancy level, though, the restaurant wasn’t noisy at all.
A waiter confirmed their reservation and led the two to a booth near a fancy fireplace in the corner of the restaurant. Tails and Cosmo sat down on the same side, requesting water before picking up their menus. While reviewing the beverage options, though, the fox felt a vibration in his namesakes.
“Oh, it’s Amy,” Tails noted as he pulled his phone from his namesakes. Putting it to his ear, he asked, “Hey Amy, what’s up? We’ve got the table all ready to go.”
“Sorry for the inconvenience,” Amy replied, out of breath, “but we won’t be able to make it.”
“Are you…okay?” Tails asked, tilting his head in concern with a raised brow.
“Fine…fending off some…Eggman robots…”
“What?!” Tails exclaimed. “Cosmo and I’ll be there in a…”
“No need,” Amy replied into her earpiece as she slammed a Badnik with her Piko Piko Hammer. “Sonic and I have things under control. Besides, he promised me a private date after this.”
“Did I?” Sonic asked, his voice heard in the background of the call, before destroying a row of Buzz Bombers with a combo homing attack.
“So, anyway, have fun you two! It’s just Eggman’s standard issue robots, and I don’t want to go to a nice restaurant all sweaty anyway after this.” Amy spun her hammer in a circular motion, taking down an entire group of Egg Pawns.
“Oh, o-okay,” Tails replied. “We’ll see you later.” He disconnected the call and turned to Cosmo. “I guess they’re not coming after all.”
“That’s too bad,” Cosmo replied before taking the orange fox’s hand, “but at least that means more alone time for the two of us.”
“You already have me to yourself almost all the time anyway,” Tails replied with a smirk. “How’s this any different?”
“How often do we go out on a proper date?” Cosmo asked, massaging Tails’ gloved palm.
“Well…good point.” Tails chuckled as he placed one hand behind his head. “I guess we can enjoy some quality romantic time together.”
The waiter returned and asked for their order.
“Oh, ummm…” Tails frantically opened his menu. “I think we may need a little more ti—”
“We’ll take the family spaghetti and meatballs to share, please,” Cosmo interrupted. “And red wine for each of us.”
“Why spaghetti?” Tails asked as the waiter left.
“Oh, no reason…” Cosmo turned away with a blush.
“And are you sure you want meatballs?” Tails asked. “You’re not really a big meat eater.”
“I will be okay,” Cosmo replied. “Besides, I wanted to try something new. Seedrians may prefer a vegetarian diet, but that does not mean we need to avoid meat entirely.”
“I suppose,” Tails replied with a nod. “I brought some digestive relief medicine just in case.” The fox pulled out the transparent bottle of multi-colored tablets from his namesakes.
“You know, I’ve been meaning to ask…” Cosmo pointed toward Tails’ rear. “How do you…you know…store stuff in your tails?”
“Oh, that’s easy,” Tails replied, a smile across his muzzle as he reached back behind to pull out various items: his trusty screwdriver, a bag of wrapped mints, multiple wrenches, several data sticks, a pair of prescription glasses, bandages, antibiotic ointment, regular use lotion, a bag of chips…
“I didn’t ask you to pull everything out,” Cosmo replied, furrowing her brow. “At this rate, we’ll run out of table space.”
“I hear ya,” he replied as he turned away from the green Seedrian and fluttering his namesakes to draw Cosmo’s attention back from the table. “I have a system.” Reaching for his screwdriver, he tucked it deep within the fur near the tip of his leftmost namesake. He then placed the remainder of his items throughout the rest of his furry tails seemingly at random, although the fox had a method to what any casual observer would cite as “madness”.
Cosmo simply stared, a blush across her face as he watched her boyfriend reload his inventory.
“Is something wrong?” Tails asked, peering back at his girlfriend, his body still turned away from her.
“No, it’s nothing,” Cosmo replied, shaking her head rapidly for a few seconds to regain her composure. “I’m just…curious how all these things don’t simply fall out of your tails.”
“Oh, my fur is both fluffy and firm,” Tails replied with a nod as he ran his fingers along the tip of his leftmost namesake. “They can keep practically anything inside, preventing me from needing to use a backpack!”
“Okay, well, how come when we snuggle, I only feel warm, fluffy goodness?” Cosmo asked.
“My stuff is so deep that you’d really need to poke around to make contact, so we’re totally safe, even when snuggling!”
“This is all coming at me so suddenly,” Cosmo replied. “And here I thought I knew everything there was to know about you, Miles Prower, but I guess I learn something new every day.”
“Now it’s your turn,” Tails replied, his smirk returning to his muzzle as he finished putting his belongings back in his namesakes.
“What do you mean?” Cosmo asked, tilting her head in curiosity.
“Tell me something about yourself that I don’t already know,” Tails replied. “I mean…I feel I know a lot about you already: your life prior to crash landing on our planet, your likes and dislikes, your etymology…” The orange fox gestured. “I think it’s only fair that you share something new with me.”
“Oh, I suppose I can,” Cosmo replied before raising a single finger to her chin in thought. “Well…you want to know how I always keep our house smelling fresh?” The young Seedrian closed her eyes and slightly clenched her teeth, and within a few moments, the flowers on either side of her head twitched before releasing a small puff of red fumes. Cosmo opened her eyes, unclenched her jaw, and took a deep breath before returning her focus to the orange fox.
Tails’ nose twitched as the fumes approached. He took a sniff, and moments later, a sense of calmness washed over him. “Cosmo…that’s…beautiful.” A single tear started forming in his eye.
“Are you okay, Tails?” She asked, placing a hand on his palm once more.
“Yes, just…I think that scent is thee definition of bliss.”
“Oh, Tails, you’re embarrassing me,” Cosmo replied as she placed a palm over her face as if to hide her clearly obvious blush.
“I feel almost guilty for hogging this,” Tails replied as he took another whiff. “Maybe we should make some car air fresheners with your scent.”
“Tails, don’t be ridiculous!” Cosmo exclaimed. “How would you feel if I took your scent and sold it as an air freshener?”
“…would anyone even enjoy my scent?” Tails asked.
“I enjoy your scent…” Cosmo said under her breath.
“What was that?” Tails asked. “I didn’t quite catch that.”
“Oh, nothing,” Cosmo replied with a palm toward the fox, her eyes closed as she chuckled nervously, a single sweat droplet forming along her forehead as the blush across her face intensified.
As if to save her from the embarrassment, the waiter arrived with a large plate of spaghetti, red sauce covering the long noodles and topped with a large helping of meatballs. The waiter then placed both tall, slender glasses of wine on the table.
As the couple thanked the waiter, the two stared at their food.
“Oh wow…this is a lot,” Tails observed with a blank expression.
“Indeed, we’ll have plenty of leftovers,” Cosmo opined.
“Well, I guess we should get started,” Tails said as he took a plate and dished a portion, handing it to Cosmo before making a plate for himself.
Cosmo picked up her knife and fork and eyed the single meatball covering her noodles. Inserting her fork with one hand, she cut a small portion of the meatball with her knife before puncturing it with her fork. Tails watched as Cosmo took a bite, thoughtfully chewing while determining whether she enjoyed the beef.
“Well, how is it?” Tails asked.
“It’s delicious,” Cosmo replied with a smile before reaching for her napkin, wiping the excess sauce from her lips. “You should try some.” The young Seedrian reached for her glass of wine, taking a small sip as Tails took his turn to try the spaghetti.
“Wow, this is really good,” Tails said with a smile. “Great choice, Cosmo!” She simply giggled in response as she watched her boyfriend pick up his knife.
“Wait,” Cosmo said, placing a palm on his hand. “I’ve got an idea.” She pointed to the particularly long noodle covering the rest of the plate of spaghetti. “You should, ummmm…” She started to blush profusely.
“What’s the matter?” Tails asked. “Am I eating this wrong?”
“Oh, definitely not,” Cosmo shook her head. “I was just hoping that we could…you know…” She raised two hands and tapped her index fingers together.
“…we could what?” Tails’ brow furrowed as he tried to translate his girlfriend’s request.
“You remember that one movie, right? The one with the two dogs in love…and they’re eating a plate of spaghetti…”
“Yes,” Tails replied with a nod. “Pretty retro if you ask me.”
“It’s a classic,” Cosmo acknowledged. “And you remember how they…ate, right?”
“You mean by shoving their faces into their plates?”
“Well yes, but also no…” Cosmo thought for a few moments, placing a hand on her chin as she struggled to explain her request to her furry boyfriend. She then peered over at Tails and took another sip of wine. “Okay, just…try not to laugh.” The Seedrian scooted closer to Tails and picked up his fork, using it to raise the particularly long noodle. “Now, I want you to repeat after me from the other side of the noodle.” Blushing even more profusely than before, Cosmo raised the fork up and inserted one end of the noodle in her mouth before she started to slowly slurp, doing her best not to make any disgusting noise.
“Oh!” Tails’ face instantly turned red. “That’s what you want to do. Okay…” The fox peered around, as if he were about to conduct a heist, before stealing Cosmo’s fork to raise his end of the spaghetti noodle toward his muzzle. Putting it in his mouth, he slowly slurped as well, the distance between the two slowly shrinking until their lips collided. Their eyes were closed, and without further instruction from Cosmo, the two exchanged a kiss for several seconds before opening their eyes once more, biting down slightly to sever the pasta that connected the two mere moments earlier.
“Oh wow,” Cosmo peered down at her plate, her face blushing profusely once more.
“How was it, my love?” Tails asked as he took Cosmo’s palm with his gloved hand.
“That was…what was the word you used? Bliss?”
“That’s an accurate way to describe it, but…” Tails peered back down at his plate. “…if we do that for each noodle, our food will get cold really fast.”
“I wouldn’t mind,” Cosmo replied with a smirk, “but I guess we should probably just eat like normal people.”
“We’ll have leftovers,” Tails replied, “and a microwave to reheat our spaghetti as many times as we need.” He took a sip of wine, hardly touched compared to Cosmo’s glass.
“With your appetite,” Cosmo grinned, “I’m actually not so sure.”
“Hey, what does that mean?” Tails gasped.
“Well, let’s just say there is a reason why you’re a bit chubby.” Cosmo proceeded to massage Tails’ belly with her palm, causing him to blush once more. “Your belly’s cute, though. I don’t mind if we don’t have leftovers if that means I have this to myself.” She pushed her plate forward and scooted toward her furry boyfriend once more, resting her head against his shoulder.
“Are you full?” Tails asked.
“Yeah, the carbs and meat really filled me up quick,” Cosmo replied, placing a palm on her belly. “Next time we should do a vegetarian romantic meal, but it would be difficult to replicate spaghetti.”
“We could get chickpea-based noodles and imitation meat,” Tails replied with a nod. “Then we could do all the romantic noodle slurping you’d like!”
“You make it sound gross,” Cosmo replied with a fake pout, pushing her lower lip out for added effect.
“Nah, you could never do anything gross,” Tails replied with a nod once more as he took another bite.
Cosmo, resting her eyes, was comforted by the warmth and softness of Tails’ fur, and coupled with the drowsiness from drinking wine, the Seedrian was quite sleepy.
And with impeccable timing, the waiter returned with a single to-go box and the bill, which Tails paid swiftly thereafter. He then carefully repositioned Cosmo so she would be resting upright, no longer leaning on him as he scrapped the leftovers into the box. Finally, checking to make sure all their things were gathered, he gently nudged Cosmo in his attempt to wake her. After a few soft attempts, a whisper left her lips.
“Carry me, Tails…”
The fox blushed once more. “I…beg your pardon?”
But Cosmo was sound asleep, her face flush and the scent of alcohol on her breath.
Tails peered around at the other patrons before observing the Seedrian once more. The fox took a deep breath and gently lifted Cosmo from the booth, cradling the young girl like a baby as he slowly walked out of the establishment. Of course, with his keen sense of hearing, he could hear the commentary from some of the snooty customers, but he didn’t care; the needs of his girlfriend took precedence over his ego.
When Tails stepped out of the restaurant, the fox set Cosmo down against the wall before lowering himself rear-first toward the Seedrian, reaching back to gently grab her arms so she could ride piggyback, a more comfortable position for the poor fox, and certainly more manageable as he made his way back to the landing strip. Once there, he cradled Cosmo once more and flew up to the passenger seat of the Tornado 2, gently placing her within before entering the cockpit himself, starting the engine and taking off, guided by the light of the stars and the moon.
Upon arriving home, Tails made a gentle landing on his personal tarmac, coming to an easy stop in his garage. Picking Cosmo up once more, Tails jumped down to the ground below, using his rotary namesakes to help blunt the fall, before slowly stepping into his house and making his way to their shared bedroom. He placed Cosmo on her side of the bed, covering her with the comforter, before slipping into the other side.
The young fox crawled his way toward his girlfriend, who had since positioned herself to her side, allowing him to easily wrap himself around her.
“Goodnight…Cosmo…my beautiful…flower.”
Tails gave her one final kiss on her forehead before snuggling her tight, closing his eyes, and falling asleep, a warm smile across his muzzle as the two slept peacefully through the rest of the night.
