Chapter Text
Atop the highest mound in all of the land
Sat a little spot of yellow and a streamlined spot of blue
Who were looking out at the sunset.
Because it was his birthday — Tails’ 20th birthday.
They were sitting in complete, companionable silence
Content in each other’s company
Or at least Tails was.
Because Sonic was not.
The blue friend was agitated
By something important, and so was not living in the moment
Or maybe living in the moment too much
Because of what Dr. Robotnik had said.
Tails saw this, so he murmured to Sonic,
”Are you still thinking about Eggman’s crazy theory?
”Don’t worry about it; it’s not true.”
Because he wanted to comfort him.
But even as the fox spoke
Sonic’s entire body began to move on a different measure of time
Blinking tears away at 100 miles a minute
Because he was finally breaking the last limit.
And Tails sort of had a sudden feeling of panic then
Like something was slipping away from him
At a speed he could not comprehend
Because Sonic was getting faster
“Sonic! Slow down!”
But he only became faster as the sun continued to set
And the mood became terrifying
Because Tails did not know what to do
The fox could no longer think
Of the sunset or lovely things like his newfound adulthood
Only of the twisted display unfolding before his very eyes
Because it was surreal
Sonic’s face kept flashing into his vision
With expressions of fear, horror, resignation and love
And then out again before he could blink
Because Sonic was trying to say something to him at 300 miles a minute
A growing pile began at Tails’ feet
It was made of things the two had shared
And Tails understood then
Because their memories together were all ones of love, and Sonic was giving them to Tails to keep
This was a goodbye at 600 miles a minute
And before Tails could say anything about it
He heard in his ear a high-pitched ‘I love you, bro.’
Because he was too slow.
Tails could not even process what had happened
When in the next moment a long bang resounded
And Sonic was gone
And Tails was alone
In the midst of the night
The sun had set.
