ESPN: Shane Hollander stuns fans by speaking Russian during press conference

The internet exploded on Thursday night, when during a press conference ahead of this weekend's charity match, Montreal Captain Shane Hollander answered a question in Russian. While the Metro's Captain has long conducted post match interviews in English and French, ice hockey fans across both sides of the Atlantic were caught off guard with Hollander's apparent command over Russian.
Reporter Pavel Krikunov, a new addition to CBC Sports, asked Boston Captain Ilya Rozonov on his team’s chances of making it to the playoffs, and if charity matches like these offer teams an opportunity to experiment with positioning and strategic plays in a risk free environment. Rozonov, who is rarely interviewed in his native Russian, gave an in-depth analysis in contrast to his usual brusque English interviews. But what really sent tongues wagging was when Hollander also responded in Russian, surprising fans, and maybe even himself. Hollander agreed with Rozonov’s answer (the two have been on-ice rivals for years) and expressed his enthusiasm for this weekend’s game.
Fans online started speculating on when Shane Hollander learned Russian, or if it was really all an elaborate prank conducted by the league’s best players. However there has been no official comment yet from the Shane Hollander camp, or the Montreal Metros.

(Video clip 1:16 min) Off camera a reporter asks a question in Russian, English subtitles scroll across the bottom of the video in a black text box. Ilya Rozonov grins at the question before launching into his answer in Russian. Next to him, Shane Hollander looks down at the press table and nods along. Another reporter starts to ask a question before Hollander answers the previous reporter with a sentence in Russian. Hollander looks around the room before turning to Rozonov, who says something not picked up by the microphones.
